TUMI’s ‘Icons Tested’ campaign with Lando Norris, Nelly Korda explores what it means to be iconic

Hong Kong  – International travel, lifestyle, and accessories brand TUMI has introduced “Icons Tested,” a campaign that explores what it means to be iconic.

The campaign is presented through the perspectives of McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris and professional golfer Nelly Korda.

It draws the parallels between the discipline, precision, and rigorous testing required in their sports and the standards applied to TUMI’s designs.

Marking the brand’s 50th anniversary year, the campaign highlights two of TUMI’s most recognised silhouettes: the Navigation Backpack from Alpha Bravo and the Celina Backpack from the Voyageur collection.

Both designs are engineered for performance and refined through testing to merge functionality with modern sophistication.

Victor Sanz, global creative director of TUMI, “Being iconic doesn’t come from a single moment, but from showing up again and again, and evolving through the process. At TUMI, that’s not just a goal—it’s our standard.”

Directed by Kiku Ohe with portraits photographed by Simon Lipman, the dual films follow Norris and Korda through moments of focus, repetition, and preparation.

Their routines are mirrored by the meticulous process behind every TUMI product, where design, testing, and refinement are held to the same high standards.

Sanz also described the campaign as a reflection of the brand’s philosophy of continual improvement.

“Every TUMI piece is designed to be tested, trusted, and to grow with those who carry them. Not just built for performance or aesthetics, but to meet our customers where they are and move with them wherever they go,” he added.

Breast cancer surgeon warns ‘breast cancer doesn’t always come with lump’: Nipple discharge, swelling can be signs

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide and the most common cancer diagnosed in American women, per the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Per the report, it is a leading cause of cancer death in less developed countries and the second leading cause of cancer death in American women. Meanwhile, as per the ICMR- National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) data, the estimated number of incidence of cancer cases in India for 2025 is 15,69,793.

Therefore, educating oneself about this type of cancer, especially for women, is essential. In an Instagram post shared on July 11, Dr Lauren Ramsey, breast cancer surgeon, MD, shared some key facts that every woman should know:

    4 facts about breast cancer

Captioned, “Advice I would give you as a breast cancer surgeon if I wasn’t afraid of hurting your feelings,” the breast cancer surgeon highlighted these 4 important details:

    1. The breast cancer surgeon pointed out that only about 5-10 percent of breast cancers are linked to inherited mutations like BRCA. However, you should still get regular screenings even if you don’t have a family history.

    2. The surgeon highlighted that breast cancer doesn’t always come with a lump. In fact, skin changes, nipple discharge, swelling, or subtle pain can be signs too. “Know what’s normal for you,” she advised.

    3. “Dense breast tissue makes breast cancer harder to detect,” the breast cancer surgeon warned. “It’s common and normal, but it may require additional imaging. Ask if your breast density is noted on your mammogram,” she added.

According to Radiologyinfo.org, mammography is specialised medical imaging that uses a low-dose X-ray system to see inside the breasts. It aids in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

    4. Lastly, she highlighted that the lifestyle changes people talk about really do make a difference. She suggested limiting alcohol and processed foods and increasing daily movement is a great place to start.

Lifestyle changes to lower breast cancer risk

Per PubMed Central, diet, physical activity, smoking, alcohol use, and vitamin and mineral use are key factors influencing the risk of breast cancer among women. Since breast cancer has a high rate of mortality and morbidity among women, it is logical to try to find ways to decrease the risk of developing breast cancer using easy, effective, and economical lifestyle changes.

Retail sales boosted by sunny weather and football in July

Sunny weather and the women’s Euro football tournament helped to lift retail sales in July, according to the latest official figures.

Retail sales volumes rose by 0.6% in July, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which was higher than analysts’ forecasts.

The release of the figures had been delayed by two weeks over concerns about the quality of the data.

The ONS has come under fire recently over the reliability of some of its statistics.

While sales volumes in July rose, sales in the three months to July were down 0.6% when compared with the previous three months.

“Supermarkets, sports shops and household goods stores had a strong start to the year, but spending there has fallen since March,” said the ONS’s director general of economic statistics, James Benford.

However, he added this was partially offset by strong sales online and at clothing and footwear stores.

Mr Benford apologised for errors in past data, and said the ONS had “improvement plans” in place.

US Department of Defense to be renamed ‘Department of War’: Report | Donald Trump News

President Donald Trump recently said ‘defence is too defensive’ as the US wants ‘to be offensive too’.

United States President Donald Trump is due to rename the Department of Defense as the Department of War in a bid to rebrand the government agency with a more forceful image.

The name change is expected to be implemented in an executive order on Friday, according to The Associated Press news agency, quoting White House officials familiar with the rebranding effort.

The “Department of War” will become the secondary name for the Department of Defense until legislative action can make the name change permanent, according to an unreleased fact sheet.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote “DEPARTMENT OF WAR” in a post on social media above a news story on the reported change.

    Hegseth made no other comment.

President Trump had said a name change would remind people of past US military victories in World War I and World War II, when the US was an emerging superpower.

“Everybody likes that we had an unbelievable history of victory when it was Department of War,” he told reporters late last month.

“Then we changed it to Department of Defense,” he said.

“Defense is too defensive. And we want to be defensive, but we want to be offensive too, if we have to be,” he said.

The Department of Defence was previously known as the “Department of War” from 1789 until a reorganisation of the US military at the end of World War II, which concluded in 1945.

It was then renamed the National Military Establishment following a merger with other departments in 1947, and the name was later amended to the Department of Defense.

Those name changes were made through an act of Congress.

The defence department is frequently referred to as just the “Pentagon”, after the unique shape of its headquarters near Washington, DC, or it is referred to by its initials, “DOD”.

US media reported that it is still unclear how Trump will make the name change permanent, but Defense Secretary Hegseth will be instructed to pursue legal and legislative means, according to reports.

Hegseth made remarks similar to Trump’s regarding the department’s name in an interview on the US channel Fox News, stating that his agency wants a “warrior ethos”.

“We want warriors, folks that understand how to exact lethality on the enemy,” he said.

“We don’t want endless contingencies and just playing defence. We think words and names and titles matter. So, we’re working with the White House and the president on it. Stand by,” he said.

  • Gaza girl’s desperate pleas in ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ shake Venice

Gaza girl’s desperate pleas in ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ shake Venice

The anguished final pleas of a 5-year-old Palestinian girl trapped in a car under Israeli fire are retold in “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” a searing new film that received a rapturous premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday.

“Hind’s story carries the weight of an entire people,” one of the actors, Saja Kilani, told reporters in a statement she read out on behalf of the whole cast and crew ahead of the screening.

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star’s Google News channel.

The true-life drama focuses on telephone operators from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society who tried for hours to reassure the trapped Hind Rajab as she begged to be rescued from the car, where her aunt, uncle and three cousins already lay dead.

“I’m so scared, please come,” the little girl says, with the original recordings of her increasingly desperate calls to the dispatchers used to powerful effect throughout the film.

“The real question is, how have we let a child beg for life? No one can live in peace while even one child is forced to plead for survival. … Let Hind Rajab’s voice echo around the world,” Kilani said.

After a three-hour wait, the Red Crescent finally got the green light from Israel to dispatch an ambulance to save Hind. But contact with the girl and the rescuers themselves was cut just after the ambulance arrived at the scene.

Days later, the girl’s body was found along with those of her relatives in the car. The remains of the two dead ambulance workers were also recovered from their bombed-out vehicle.

The Israel Defence Forces initially said its troops had not been within firing range of the car. However, independent investigations challenged this assertion and a subsequent UN report said the IDF had destroyed Rajab’s car and killed the two medics who were trying to save her.

Asked about the killings this week, the IDF said the incident, which happened on January 29, 2024, was still under review and declined further comment.

    Standing Ovation

The film received a thunderous, 24-minute standing ovation at its premiere, by far the longest of this festival to date, making it the clear crowd favourite to win the prestigious Golden Lion award, which will be awarded on September 6.

“Free, free Palestine,” people in the audience chanted.

The movie has also attracted some top Hollywood names as executive producers, giving it added industry heft, including actors Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, who were both in Venice on Wednesday to support the production, as well as Brad Pitt.

Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania, who also wrote the screenplay, said Hind’s voice transcended a single tragedy.

“When I heard the first time the voice of Hind, there was something more than her voice. It was the very voice of Gaza asking for help. … It was anger and helplessness that gave birth to this movie,” she told reporters.

The IDF invaded the Gaza Strip after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. More than 63,000 people living in Gaza have died in the fighting, Gaza health authorities say.

“The narrative around the world is that those dying in Gaza are collateral damage. I think this is so dehumanizing, and that’s why cinema and art are important, to give those people a voice and a face. We are saying enough, enough of this genocide,” Ben Hania said.

The world’s biggest academic association of genocide scholars announced this week that it had passed a resolution saying the legal criteria had been met to establish that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, something Israel denies.

The actors playing the Red Crescent dispatchers said they only heard Rajab’s recordings when they were on the set, making the filming an extremely emotional process.

“There were two times where I couldn’t keep filming. I had a panic attack,” Palestinian actor Motaz Malhees said.

‘A void that is impossible to fill’: tributes paid to fashion designer Giorgio Armani | Fashion

Pioneering fashion designer Giorgio Armani has been remembered as a “true friend”, “an immense talent” and “a visionary” following his death at the age of 91.

Designers, celebrities, politicians and artists were among those paying tribute after the Armani Group announced his death on Thursday.

“The world lost a giant today. He made history and will be remembered forever,” wrote Donatella Versace on Instagram.

Long-serving Vogue editor Anna Wintour reflected on Armani’s wide influence: “For him fashion wasn’t one thing: it was also film, music, sport, art, design, and architecture, and he left his mark in all these worlds.”

Fashion designer Valentino Garavani described Armani as “a friend, never a rival … I can only bow to his immense talent.”

Ralph Lauren called him “a designer who never strayed from his vision … a man who loved his family and friends, and his homeland in such a special way.”

Prada group’s Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli said Armani was “a Maestro recognised for his elegance and creativity, and an undisputed protagonist of Italian and international fashion.”

Julia Roberts, whose steel grey oversized Armani suit teamed with a white shirt and tie became one of the most memorable Golden Globes looks of all time, wrote on social media Armani was “A true friend. A legend,” adding a broken heart emoji.

In a series of posts on X, Russell Crowe recounted how losing his bags on the way to the Cannes film festival in 1997 led to him discovering the designer. “I adored him. He was so kind. So many significant moments in my life, awards, wedding, Wimbledon … all in Armani. What a life he had, from his beginnings to his glory.”

Victoria Beckham said on Instagram: “The fashion world has lost a true legend in Giorgio Armani – a visionary designer whose legacy will live on forever. I feel honoured to have called him a friend.”

Martin Scorsese, who directed the 1990 documentary Made in Milan offering a behind-the-scenes look at fashion designer, said Armani “was a real artist, and a great one – people use the term ‘timeless’ quite often, but in his case it happens to be true”.

Michelle Pfeiffer said she was “heartbroken” to hear of the designer’s passing.

Formula One driver Charles Leclerc, who starred in an Armani campaign, said it had been “a great honour to have had the chance to meet and work with such an amazing person”.

Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, praised Armani as “an icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy.”

Known as the “king of the blazer”, Armani pioneered soft power dressing and revolutionised red-carpet fashion. He dressed stars from Diane Keaton and Jodie Foster to Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, and his designs became synonymous with elegance on the stages of the Academy Awards and Golden Globes.

Cindy Crawford, Diane Kruger, Morgan Freeman and Samuel L Jackson were among others paying tribute.
