Markets have been rising on hopes that weak jobs data will lead to rate cuts. But they could be staring at an oncoming freight train if the U.S. nonfarm payrolls data due Friday sends recessionary signals.

The ADP private payrolls report on Thursday showed an increase of 54,000 jobs in August, lower than the 75,000 expected by economists polled by Dow Jones. The figure is also less than the revised 106,000 jobs added in July.

Jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 30 also increased to 237,000. That number came in above estimates and marked an 8,000 gain from the prior week, providing more evidence of labor market slowdown.

Currently, the market has shrugged off that data. All three major U.S. indexes ended in positive territory Thursday, with the S&P500 notching a record high.

But that's the thing about freight trains. You hear them them faintly in the distance, and all of a sudden, you're scrambling to jump out of the way as it barrels down on you.

Friday's nonfarm payrolls report is expected to show 75,000 additions last month, according to a Dow Jones poll.

Investors will then know if the train is simply pulling into a station, or their portfolios are about to get run over — and optimism in itself isn't always a great armor.

What you need to know today

S&P notches new record high. The S&P 500 closed at its 21st record high of the year after an afternoon boost pushed stocks solidly into the green as traders shook off weak private employment data earlier in the day. The Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average also recorded gains. Asia-Pacific markets traded higher Friday, led by Taiwan's Taiex with a gain of over 1%.

Trump formalizes Japan trade deal. U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday stateside which implements a 15% baseline tariffs on most Japanese goods, including autos. The deal had been reached in July after months of negotiations.

Chip tariffs incoming. Trump reiterated a warning that he will soon impose "fairly substantial" tariffs on semiconductor imports from companies that do not shift production to the U.S., but will spare firms like Apple that expand investments domestically.

Trump vs FTC. U.S. President Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fire Federal Trade Commission commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, who lower courts ordered reinstated after he terminated her. Trump in March removed Slaughter and another Democratic commissioner, Alvaro Bedoya, as part of a sprawling effort to exert his influence over federal agencies.

AI skills are in high demand — and employers are willing to pay a premium for them

Rather than replacing roles with AI, many companies are hiring workers who can leverage artificial intelligence, a new study published in July found.

In an analysis of over a billion job postings, labor insight platform Lightcast identified not only a surge in demand for AI skills, but also higher average pay for jobs that required them.

"Job postings are increasingly emphasizing AI skills and there are signals that employers are willing to pay premium salaries for them," Elena Magrini, head of global research at Lightcast, told CNBC.

  • Early signs of kidney problems that most people ignore

Early signs of kidney problems that most people ignore

Kidney ailments like Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), once seen largely as diseases of the elderly, are now rising at alarmingly rates among younger people. The surge is driven by increasing cases of diabetes and hypertension, compounded by sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and growing obesity.

This shift highlights the urgent need for increased awareness, early detection, and preventive measures to tackle the growing burden of kidney disease in India. Routine screening, lifestyle changes, and better health education—particularly among the youth—are critical to curbing the rise in kidney-related problems.

Are you at risk of kidney disease? Here are the key signs and symptoms to watch for:

Trouble sleeping: When kidneys don’t filter properly, toxins build up in the blood, making it harder to sleep. People with kidney disease are also more likely to experience sleep apnea.

Frequent urination: Damaged kidney filters can cause an increased urge to urinate, particularly at night. While this may also signal a urinary infection or, in men, an enlarged prostate, any noticeable change in frequency should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Low energy: When toxins build up in the blood, they can cause fatigue, weakness, and difficulty concentrating. Kidney disease can also lead to anaemia, which further contributes to tiredness.

Blood in urine: Healthy kidneys prevent blood cells from leaking into urine. When the filters are damaged, blood may appear, signalling possible kidney disease, stones, tumours, or infection. Any such sign should be checked by a doctor immediately.

Puffiness around eyes: Protein leaking into urine, instead of staying in the body, may cause swelling or puffiness around the eyes—a possible sign of kidney damage.

Swollen ankles and feet: When kidneys don’t function properly, sodium retention can cause swelling. This symptom may also be linked to heart disease, liver disease, or chronic vein problems in the legs.

Muscle cramping: Kidney dysfunction can disrupt electrolyte balance—like low calcium or high phosphorus—triggering muscle cramps.

    When to See a Doctor?

Consult a doctor if you notice any signs of kidney disease. Early detection is key to preventing progression to kidney failure. Those at higher risk may be advised to undergo regular urine and blood tests for timely monitoring.

Messi brace for Argentina downs Venezuela in emotional World Cup farewell | Football News

A sold out stadium of 85 thousand in Buenos Aires witness two farewell Lionel Messi goals in World Cup qualifier.

Lionel Messi made sure he had good memories of playing a home qualifier with Argentina’s national team for the last time in his illustrious career.

The former Barcelona forward scored twice on Thursday in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela in front of a raucous sellout crowd that had gathered at Estadio Monumental to bid him farewell.

“Being able to finish this way here is what I’ve always dreamed of,” Messi said.

“I’ve experienced a lot of things on this pitch, both good and not so good, but it’s always a joy to play in Argentina, in front of our fans.”

Messi is yet to give any clues about when he will retire from the top level of the sport, but the qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup will begin in 2027, when he is 40.

The Argentina captain scored in the 39th and 80th minutes, and Lautaro Martinez added a goal in the 76th.

Messi now has 36 goals in South American World Cup qualifiers and remains the all-time scoring leader.

His Inter Miami teammate, Luis Suarez, has 29 goals in continental qualifying, but he has retired from Uruguay’s national team. Bolivia’s Marcelo Moreno Martins is third with 22.

Looking ahead, Messi clarified he will only compete in next year’s World Cup if he feels physically fit.

“I’m excited, eager. It’s day by day, feeling the sensations. If I feel good, I enjoy it; if not, I’d rather not be there,” he said, adding that the nine months until the tournament kicks off “is a long time”.

Already qualified, the World Cup champions extended their tally to 38 points and will remain atop the South American qualifying standings regardless of what happens in the last round next Tuesday.

Venezuela, trying to qualify for its first World Cup, remains on 18 points and in seventh place. They’re still in contention to advance to an intercontinental playoff.

Singer Quratulain Balouch injured in brown bear attack during Skardu camping trip – Culture

Singer Quratulain Balouch, popularly known as QB, was injured in Skardu’s Deosai National Park after being attacked by a brown bear during a camping trip on Thursday night. She was rescued by nearby people and rushed to a hospital, where doctors say she is out of danger.

According to Gilgit-Baltistan wildlife officials, the rare brown bear attacked the singer’s camp near Bara Pani, a popular camping site in Deosai, where she was with her team for a shoot.

According to Baltistan police spokesperson Ghulam Muhammad, Balouch was with two friends when the bear attacked, injuring both of her arms with its claws and teeth. Her cameraman and another companion were unharmed in the incident.

Sources said the bear retreated after her screams alerted others in the area. Wildlife staff stationed near the campsite quickly intervened, administered first aid, and shifted her to RHQ Hospital Skardu, where doctors confirmed she is out of danger. Police have since launched an investigation into the incident.

The Himalayan brown bear, native to Deosai, often moves towards Bara Pani in search of food. Similar attacks have occurred in the past, according to Muhammad.

Authorities have urged tourists to exercise caution when camping in Deosai, advising visitors to pitch camps closer to hotels or designated safe zones at night.

Stretching between Skardu and Astore districts, Deosai National Park is one of Pakistan’s most striking landscapes. Each summer, the park attracts a large number of national and international tourists who camp there for days.

It is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, with its most iconic residents being the Himalayan marmot and the endangered Himalayan brown bear, with a population estimated at just 77. They primarily feed on fish in the Bandapani river.

OpenAI has rolled out a new feature on ChatGPT that will allow users to branch conversations in related areas without losing the original thread. The update will now be available to logged in users on web, OpenAI announced on X.

The feature has been oft requested by ChatGPT users previously.

A user on the OpenAI Developer Community forum explained how the feature would be beneficial for coding. “When tackling complex tasks in coding, users often encounter multiple steps. Instead of starting over each time, users should be able to create a branch for each step, allowing independent problem-solving for each stage. Once all steps are completed, users could merge the branches to integrate the solutions. This feature would make it much easier to manage and solve multi-step processes, improving productivity and efficiency,” a comment noted.

When users right click on a conversation, they should be able to see an option for “Branch in new chat” above another option for “Read aloud.”

OpenAI also expanded their ChatGPT Projects feature for free to all users so users can maintain a separate workspace for everything related to a long-running area being worked on.
