Browning looking to make most of Sprint Race learnings

Luke Browning says that he is hopeful of a stronger showing in the Feature Race after a solid run to the points in P8.

Starting 10th on the grid by virtue of earning pole position on Friday, the Hitech TGR driver says his race was all about staying out of trouble, as others fell by the wayside in various incidents around and ahead of him.

Speaking afterwards, the Briton says he was happy enough with the result, noting that it would be important to work overnight having gained a greater understanding of the car and tyres in Monza.

“It went ok. Being honest, there was a lot of carnage in front caused by other people, and I just made the most of that. So, we didn’t have the overall pace today, but I’m just gonna keep on working on what I can do.

“Honestly, I think I might have been the only one that was staying out of trouble. Everyone around me just seemed to crash and I was making the most of that. So, although we didn’t have the pace today, we’re gonna have it tomorrow. We’ve got a good direction and yeah, I’m looking forward to starting from pole tomorrow.”

Browning is hopeful of a strong result to cap off a strong weekend in which he and Hitech have looked competitive from start to finish.

Last season, he appeared to be on for a strong result as he contended for the Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship but contact on Sunday took him out of contention.

This time around, he is aiming to keep things clean and maximise his starting position on Sunday, with a clear view ahead of him on the grid and high hopes of overnight changes helping him tomorrow.

The Hitech driver added that a win is the obvious goal as he looks to put right what he feels was a missed opportunity last season.

“We’ve got very smart guys up there, and I’m sure it’ll be a combination of the way I’m driving it and the way we set up the car that just didn’t quite click today, so I’m sure we’ll get it right tomorrow.

“It’d be nice to get a win, and I think here, it would be special, especially considering it didn’t quite go our way last year here. So, I’ve got some redemption to go out and earn tomorrow.”

France hits back at US over Gaza accusations – POLITICO

Rubio said earlier this week that French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to recognize Palestinian statehood had blown any chance of successful ceasefire talks between Israel and the Hamas militant group, echoing similar accusations made last month. Hamas walked away from negotiations “the minute, the day that the French announced their thing,” according to Rubio.

The French Response account’s messages highlight the time stamps of social media posts by Macron and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to argue that “negotiations had already collapsed before France’s announcement.”

It also pointed to a declaration at a July United Nations conference, spearheaded by France and Saudi Arabia, which read that the “recognition and realization of the State of Palestine are an essential and indispensable component of the achievement of the two-state solution.”

And it listed a message by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announcing that the U.S. would pull out of ceasefire talks, saying Hamas wasn’t acting in good faith.

Barrot’s ministry is bolstering its capacity to detect disinformation through “monitoring hubs” on social networks and created the “automated response account” in order to “counter the spurious attacks targeted at us,” the minister said in remarks published by BFM TV.

Macron announced in July that France would recognize Palestinian statehood. The U.K., Canada, Australia and Belgium have since made similar announcements.

  • Bitcoin (BTC) Doesn’t Cheer Fed Cut Bets. What Next?

Bitcoin (BTC) Doesn’t Cheer Fed Cut Bets. What Next?

Bad news has just been bad news over the past 24 hours. Friday’s weak U.S. jobs report bolstered bets on deeper Fed cuts, but bitcoin hasn’t played along.

The leading cryptocurrency by market value remains heavy below $112,000, instead of rallying on the prospect of easier monetary policy as many had anticipated. The inability to find upside suggests potential for a deeper sell-off ahead.

    NFP shock

Job seekers had a tough time in August as the nonfarm payrolls revealed just 22,000 job additions, significantly less than the Dow Jones’ projection of 75,000. The report also revised lower the combined job creation over June and July by 21,000. Notably, the revised June figure showed a net loss of 13,000.

Nine sectors, including manufacturing, construction, wholesale trade, and professional services, registered job losses, while health services and leisure and hospitality were bright spots.

The Kobeissi Letter called the jobs report “absolutely insane.” The newsletter service described the downward revisions in prior months as a sign of a broken system and the labour market entering recession territory.

Following the jobs data, the probability of a Fed rate cut at the Sept. 17 meeting surged to 100%, and the odds of a 50-basis-point cut jumped to 12%. The likelihood of additional rate cuts in November and December also increased, sending Treasury yields lower.

The upcoming revisions to earlier jobs reports are expected to add fuel to the rate cut bets. “The BLS will announce annual benchmark revisions on Tuesday, and they are expected to point to even weaker job growth earlier. Some surveys suggest between 500k and 1 mln jobs could be revised away,” Bannockburn Global Forex’s Managing Director and Chief Market Strategist, Marc Chandler said in a market update.

BTC’s double top is intact; volatility in Treasury yields may rise

Bitcoin briefly rallied on hopes of a Fed rate cut and softer yields, reaching a high of over $113,300. But the bounce quickly faded, with prices slipping back under $111,982 — the double‑top neckline.

Failing to retake that level underscored the late August double top breakdown and validates the bearish setup, keeping downside risks in focus. Prices crossing below the Ichimoku cloud further validates the bearish outlook, as Brent Donnelly, president of Spectra Markets, noted in a market update.

    BTC’s daily chart. (TradingView/CoinDesk)

The first line of support is located around $101,700, which corresponds to the 200-day simple moving average (SMA). The latest double top breakdown in bitcoin closely mirrors the one from February this year, which led to a significant multi-week sell-off that pushed prices down to around $75,000.

The double top is a bearish reversal chart formation that occurs after an asset has experienced an uptrend. It forms when the price reaches a high point (the first peak), then pulls back to a support level called the neckline. The price then rises again but fails to surpass the first peak, creating a second peak at roughly the same level. The pattern is confirmed when the price breaks below the neckline, signaling that the previous uptrend has lost momentum and a downtrend may follow.

    Treasury yields may turn volatile

The bearish technical outlook, presented by the latest double top breakdown, is reinforced by the possibility of a pickup in volatility in Treasury yields, which often leads to financial tightening.

The volatility could pick up in the coming days, as the impending Fed rate cuts could initially send the 10-year yield lower in a positive development for BTC and risk assets. That said, the downside looks limited and could be quickly reversed, much like what happened in late 2024.

Last year, from September through December, the 10-year yield actually rose, even as the Fed began cutting rates, reversing earlier declines that had occurred in the lead-up to September. The 10-year yield bottomed out at 3.6% in mid-September 2024 and then rose to 4.80% by mid-January.

While the labour market today appears significantly weaker than last year, inflation is relatively higher, and fiscal spending continues unabated, both of which mean that the yield could surge following the September rate cut.

“Why the 10yr yield rose from September through December 2024 is open to interpretation, but there was an underpinning of macro resilience, sticky-ish inflation and lots of talk on fiscal largesse as a medium-term risk. This time around, granted, worries on the economy are more intense. But offsetting this are ongoing fiscal concerns, and quite a different inflation dynamic,” analysts at ING said in a note to clients.

August CPI data due next week

When the Fed cut rates last September, the U.S. consumer price index was well below 3%. Since then, it has edged back up to 3%. More importantly, the August CPI data, due next week, is likely to provide further evidence of inflation stickiness.

According to Wells Fargo, the core CPI is likely to have risen by 0.3%, keeping the year-over-year rate at 3.1%. Meanwhile, the headline CPI is forecast to have risen 0.3% month-over-month and 2.9% year-over-year.

  • Marvel’s Wolverine trailer expected at PlayStation State of Play, report suggests

Marvel’s Wolverine trailer expected at PlayStation State of Play, report suggests

Insomniac Games’ long-awaited Marvel’s Wolverine could finally receive its first full trailer later this month, according to a new report.

The title, first announced at the PlayStation Showcase in 2021, has had little in the way of official updates since its teaser reveal.

However, Insider Gaming now reports that Wolverine is “almost certainly” set to feature at Sony’s upcoming State of Play event, scheduled for late September 2025.

“If the game doesn’t appear at State of Play, then the trailer will undoubtedly be released in the next few months, with The Game Awards being the next likely candidate,” the outlet stated.

Development of the game faced disruption following a ransomware attack on Insomniac in December 2023, which resulted in employee information and leaked gameplay footage being shared online. The studio confirmed at the time that the project would continue despite the setback.

“We want everyone to enjoy the games we develop as intended and as our players deserve,” Insomniac said following the leak.

“Marvel’s Wolverine continues as planned. The game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development.”

Reports suggest the game will carry a “hard” M-rating, focusing on violent combat, fitting the character’s nature.

While it may not follow a fully open-world format like Insomniac’s Spider-Man series, it is expected to include expansive areas similar to other major PlayStation exclusives.

Marvel’s Wolverine will mark the first solo outing for the character in many years and is widely expected to launch as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.

Fans will be watching Sony’s showcase closely later this month to see whether Logan finally steps into the spotlight.

  • Wardley v Parker: Fabio Wardley to fight Joseph Parker at London’s O2 Arena in October

Wardley v Parker: Fabio Wardley to fight Joseph Parker at London’s O2 Arena in October

These two likeable heavyweights are in strong positions – highly ranked, and could easily sit back and wait for opportunities. But these are fighting men and it is not in their DNA to coast.

Parker is absolutely deserving of his world-title shot and remains the WBO mandatory challenger. The WBO has asked Usyk for medical evidence after footage surfaced of him dancing at a public event. No-one can accuse Usyk of avoiding challenges but you have to wonder if he is holding out for a more lucrative bout.

To put it all into context: Usyk currently holds all four recognised heavyweight titles. Parker is first in line with the WBO. Things are messy with the WBA – Wardley is the interim champion and Kubrat Pulev holds the regular belt.

In short, too many belts, too much confusion. The upside for Wardley is that if Parker is upgraded to full WBO champion, that might open the door for him to a world title shot sooner than expected.

Elsewhere, Agit Kabayel is the WBC’s number one challenger for the title as an interim champion, while over at the IBF there is not even a clear mandatory challenger with veteran Derek Chisora, incredibly, sitting at number two.

But despite all the politics, the division is buzzing. It might not quite be the 1990s glory days, or even the Deontay Wilder/Tyson Fury/Anthony Joshua boom, but we are seeing the next wave emerge.

Moses Itauma looks like he is leading that charge. He is officially ranked number one with the WBA and WBO, but because of boxing’s layer of ‘secondary champions’ he actually sits behind Usyk as full champion, plus the likes of Pulev and Wardley at the WBA, and Parker at the WBO.

After blowing away Dillian Whyte in August, talk quickly turned to Itauma fighting Usyk next. But his promoters Queensberry seem more inclined to give him a solid world-level test before throwing him in with the pound-for-pound king. Filip Hrgovic’s name has been floated as a possible opponent.

Vuelta a Espana: Marc Soler wins stage 14 as riders from the Israel-Premier Tech cycling team race in modified jerseys amid more pro-Palestinian protesters

Marc Soler won stage 14 of the Vuelta a Espana as riders from the Israel-Premier Tech team raced in modified jerseys amid more pro-Palestinian protests at the final Grand Tour of the season.

Spaniard Soler powered up to the summit finish at Farrapona in the north of the country alone after dropping his fellow breakaway riders.

Overall race leader Jonas Vingegaard was runner-up on Saturday, 39 seconds behind, as he edged out nearest rival Joao Almeida of Portugal – Soler’s UAE Team Emirates-XRG team-mate – on the second big mountain stage in two days.

Denmark’s Vingegaard boosted his lead in the general classification by a further two seconds.

Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock finished eighth and remains in third position overall, although he conceded a further 10 seconds to fourth-placed Jai Hindley, who also came fourth on the day.

Riders from Israel-Premier Tech participated wearing jerseys without their team name on for the “safety” of the race.

Earlier this week, stage 11 ended prematurely with no winner declared as police struggled to contain hundreds of flag-waving pro-Palestinian protesters in Bilbao.

“In the interest of prioritising the safety of our riders and the entire peloton, in light of the dangerous nature of some protests at the Vuelta, Israel-Premier Tech has issued riders with team monogram-branded kit for the remainder of the race,” the team said on Saturday before the stage.

“The team name remains Israel-Premier Tech but the monogram kit now aligns with the branding decisions we have previously adopted for our vehicles and casual clothing.”

There was some disruption during the neutralised start as riders slowed to a halt to travel down a narrow road lined with people waving Palestinian flags.

The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

At least 64,231 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.

The ministry also says 370 people have so far died during the war as a result of malnutrition and starvation, including three over the past 24 hours.

The Vuelta continues on Sunday in Galicia with the medium-mountain stage 15, a 168km route from A Veiga to Vegadeo.

Five drown as Rescue 1122 boat capsizes in Multan amid flood evacuation: officials – Pakistan

Five people drowned as a boat capsized in the Chenab River in the Jalalpur Pirwala area of Punjab’s Multan district on Saturday amid a flood evacuation, according to officials.

Multan Deputy Commissioner (DC) Wasim Hamid Sindhu and City Police Officer (CPO) Sadiq Ali Dogar later reached the site for an inspection and were briefed by officials present there.

“The causes of the boat accident are being carefully examined. Initially, five deaths, including children on board the boat, have been confirmed,” DC Sindhu was quoted as saying in a statement. A statement from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) also put the toll at five.

He ordered the rescue authorities to immediately intensify the search operation. “Rescue operations are being carried out to search for more people on board the boat,” Sindhu said.

Meanwhile, CPO Dogar said police teams were providing full support to Rescue 1122 and the initial reasons for the boat accident included the darkness and flooded routes.

The initial report from Rescue 1122 explained that the boat had hit a tree and capsized due to the strong water flow, along with the women and children on board not able to maintain their balance, while evacuating people from floodwaters in Jalalpur Pirwala.

It added that most of the women and children were aboard the boat and the depth of the water was 15 to 20 feet.

The report said personnel launched search and rescue operations and four bodies were retrieved, while the rest of the people were recovered. “Line searching and boat searching are being conducted at different places to search for one child,” it said.

A statement from the department said Rescue 1122 Secretary Dr Rizwan Naseer expressed grief over the deaths and ordered the divisional emergency officer to immediately share the incident report.

Multan Commissioner Aamir Karim Khan also expressed grief over the deaths and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.

Punjab PDMA Director General Irfan Kathia directed that the best medical assistance be provided to the injured.

“Evacuation of victims should be made safe in a flood situation. There should be no overloading in private boats or rescue boats,” he ordered.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took notice of the incident and extended her condolences to the families of the victims.

Rescue 1122 said that it had rescued more than 9,000 people in flood operations from Multan alone, while over 350,000 people and above 300,000 animals had been evacuated in advance.
