England player ratings vs Andorra: Thomas Tuchel’s dreadfully dull Three Lions lack spark in drab World Cup qualifying win

An own goal and a Declan Rice header kept the Euro 2024 finalists on track for qualification, but the team lacked inspiration at Villa Park

England maintained their 100 percent record in their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Andorra on Saturday, but the uninspiring display did little to dissuade the doubters about Thomas Tuchel’s ability to get the best out of the team.

The Three Lions monopolised the ball and territory but Andorra proved extremely stubborn opponents as the visitors sat around their area and blocked the majority of England’s probing passes and efforts from inside the area, such as when Max Llovera slid in to block Eberechi Eze’s goal-bound strike.

It was fitting, then, that England took the lead via an own goal as Reece James slipped the ball to Noni Madueke, whose cross was glanced in by defender Christian Garcia.

That should have opened the floodgates, but Andorra continued to stifle England, who were also frustrated by their own wasteful finishing. In the second half, Marcus Rashford curled over the bar after Eze had a shot saved before the otherwise excellent debutant, Elliot Anderson, fired too close to goalkeeper Iker Alvarez .

England’s pressure finally made a difference and they scored again thanks to another inviting cross as a delicious delivery from James found Declan Rice to head home. But once again, Tuchel’s side failed to build on the momentum and had to settle for an unflattering result against a very low-level opponent, albeit a determined one.

  • Clement Virgo’s ‘Steal Away’ Explores Power, Identity and Ghosts of the Past

Clement Virgo’s ‘Steal Away’ Explores Power, Identity and Ghosts of the Past

Clement Virgo’s erotic, eerie thriller Steal Away tells the story of two young women — one Black, one white — who form a bond while trying to unravel the secret history of a stately manor house. Virgo, after films like Rude (1995) and Brother (2022), returns to the familiar terrain of examining the impact of racism and inequality.

In an echo of The Book of Negroes, Virgo’s 2015 historical TV miniseries, which dealt with the transatlantic slave trade, Steal Away centers on Cécile, a young woman played by Mallori Johnson, who arrives as a young African refugee to the privileged home of Fanny (Angourie Rice), a young and sheltered woman whose world barely extends beyond life with her beautiful and benevolent mother, Florence, played by Lauren Lee Smith.

Virgo has Steal Away begin as a feminist drama that eventually breaks conventions by morphing into something of a horror film, with even a pinch of the supernatural.

“It’s partly coming-of-age, but it’s also partly psychological thriller and I hopefully play a little bit with horror elements, and ultimately with an allegory about the past and somewhat about the present and what we may see in the future,” the director explains.

Virgo and script co-writer Tamara Faith Berger never lay out Cécile’s backstory, even if their movie is inspired by Karolyn Smardz Frost’s historical nonfiction book Steal Away Home, in which fugitive slave Cecelia Reynolds escapes to Canada via the Underground Railroad, only to eventually return to Kentucky as a freed woman and renew her complex relationship with her former mistress.

“I wanted to really just use that [book] as a jumping off point and make it about these two young women without trying to be overt with the politics. I wanted to speak about the history, without being obvious,” Virgo explains.

Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s Persona and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, where the lead female characters have dual roles, Virgo in Steal Away plunges Cécile and Fanny into a sexual tug-of-war for Rufus, the gardener’s son, played by Idrissa Sanogo Bamba. And that foregrounds the erotically charged theme of female empowerment as Cécile falls in love with Rufus, only to ignite Fanny’s jealousy and her own sexual awakening.

Virgo adds that he didn’t give leads Rice and Johnson much direction and exposition on set, but, as is his style, he instead set his actors loose to discover their own emotions and emotional truth about their characters. “As a director, I try not to be prescriptive in terms of how I approach the work and how I relate to the actors,” he says.

Steal Away, as with Virgo’s first five feature films, will get a premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. It’s something he says he will never take for granted. “Look, it’s always a miracle when I make a film and it’s always special when I show it in my hometown,” says the filmmaker, who was born in Jamaica and grew up in Toronto. “I made my first short film in 1991 in my early 20s, and TIFF showed that film. And they’ve showed all my feature films. It never gets old.”

Watch Chaka Khan join Dua Lipa for ‘Ain’t Nobody’ in Chicago

Dua Lipa brought out Chaka Khan for a duet of ‘Ain’t Nobody’ at her show in Chicago last night – watch below.

The North American leg of her huge Radical Optimism World Tour kicked off in Toronto on Monday (September1), and on Friday, she rolled into Chicago’s United Center for the first of two nights.

During the show, she introduced Chicago music legend Chaka Khan onto the stage and they launched into a version of the Grammy-winning 1983 single ‘Ain’t Nobody’, which Khan originally recorded with the funk band Rufus.

    Watch fan-captured footage here:

Lipa has been playing songs by local artists throughout the Radical Optimism tour, often with high-profile guests, which most recently included Jamiroquai in London’s Wembley Stadium for ‘Virtual Insanity’. She also played with Crowded House’s Neil Finn in Auckland, and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker in Sydney.

Her two Wembley shows in June later became the subject of a mini-documentary titled Dua Lipa – The Beat Before (Wembley Stadium), which chronicled behind-the-scenes footage and fan vox-pops from the gigs.

In other Dua Lipa-related news, she officially confirmed her engagement to actor Callum Turner in June after months of fan speculation.

Speaking to British Vogue for a new cover story, she said: “Yeah, we’re engaged. It’s very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don’t know, be best friends forever—it’s a really special feeling.”

She was also granted Kosovan citizenship in August, being hailed by the country’s president as “one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country’s history”.

Lipa was also one of the celebrities to hit out at British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s response to their open letter that called for the end of “UK complicity” in Gaza.

“Prime Minister, you’ve built your career as a human rights lawyer, defending the powerless and challenging injustice,” the response read. “In years to come, when you are asked whether you have done enough, what will you say?”

  • Lithuania win Baltic derby to snatch Quarter-Finals spot

Lithuania win Baltic derby to snatch Quarter-Finals spot

    The official EuroBasket app

RIGA (Latvia) – The Baltic Derby was everything we expected it to be. Lithuania and Latvia fought until the final buzzer backed by 11,000 fans in the stands, in a truly unique atmosphere, with both teams hearing the cheers from the sell out crowd.

In the end, Lithuania won the game 88-79, booking a trip to the Quarter-Finals where they’ll meet either Greece or Israel.

That Round of 16 matchup will be played on Sunday, while this Quarter-Finals pairing takes the court again on Tuesday.

    Turning Point

Trailing 56-48 midway through the third quarter, Latvia had multiple chances to get back within two possessions, but failed to convert them, turning the ball over or missing the shots.

While there was still plenty of basketball ahead of us, Jonas Valanciunas’ and-one bucket to beat the shot clock buzzer when he only had 1.7 seconds to get it off pushed the gap back to double digits.

That took all of the wind out of the Latvian sails, Lithuania climbing to a +12 advantage after three quarters, cruising towards the win over the final 10 minutes.

The closest Latvia got in reasonable time was to -7 with 3:30 left to play, but Azuolas Tubelis and Arnas Velicka prevented any kind of comeback by the hosts with back-to-back buckets.

    TCL Player of the Game

With Rokas Jokubaitis out, coach Rimas Kurtinaitis needed something special to reach the Quarter-Finals. He got it.

Arnas Velicka stepped up once again, finishing the game with 21 points, 12 assists and 5 rebounds, with the crucial number in his stat line being +15. That was the margin between the two teams with him on the floor.

He is only the third Lithuanian player with 10+ assists in a knockout game at the EuroBasket, after Sarunas Jasikevicius (11 in the Quarter-Finals in 2003) and Mantas Kalnietis (11 in the Quarter-Finals in 2015).

Velicka is also the sixth Lithuanian player with 10+ points, 5+ rebounds and 5+ assists in a knockout game at the EuroBasket over the last 30 years, and this was his career-high in scoring in a EuroBasket game.

Need more? We got more: the 25-year-old is joined Mateusz Ponitka (2022, vs. Slovenia) and Luka Doncic (2025, vs. Belgium) as the third player combining for 20+ points, 10+ assists and 5+ assists in a EuroBasket game over the last 30 years.

    Stats Don’t Lie

29-0. That’s Lithuania’s record in EuroBasket history when leading by 10+ points at halftime.

They were up 47-37 at the break, paving the way towards their 29th straight win when leading by double digits after 20 minutes of action.

    Bottom Line

Lithuania made it back to the Quarter-Finals, after missing out both in 2022 and 2017. This are guaranteed to finish among the top eight teams for the 12th time in EuroBasket history, an incredible number considering this is their 16th participation.

Without their starting point guard, they played big, not just under the rim, but all over the court, including moments in which power forwards Azuolas Tubelis and Tadas Sedekerskis guarded Arturs Zagars, the Latvian point guard.

That allowed them to switch the 1-5 pick-and-roll with Kristaps Porzingis and prevent Latvia from creating any kind of advantage in those situations.

With fans of both teams sitting together, it is impossible to guess how many Lithuanian fans were in the stands, but they made their presence felt, shouting their souls out to help the guys in white eliminate the hosts.

Meanwhile, the Latvian fans were still proud of their team’s performance in this event. A standing ovation long after the final buzzer occurred in the arena, but their run ends here.

Kristaps Porzingis had 34 points and 19 rebounds in a losing effort.

    They Said

“We executed our game plan pretty well. We did some switching defensively on Porzingis, so everyone got a piece of him on defense, it wasn’t just me or him (points at Deividas Sirvydis), it’s everyone. I’m just happy.” – Azuolas Tubelis, Lithuania

“He showed himself what a basketball player he could be at the highest level, against all these players.” – Tubelis, praising Arnas Velicka

“To be honest, I don’t care. It’s my first EuroBasket, I’m just happy to be here and I’m going to do everything to be successful as a team.” – Tubelis, answering which opponent he prefers in the Quarter-Finals

“Crowd was unbelievable! It was a full house, it’s always a derby, can’t ask for more.” – Jonas Valanciunas, Lithuania

“It doesn’t matter who plays, who put up more shots, who scored more points, as long as we win. It’s a team sport, it’s not individual.” – Valanciunas talking coming off the bench and playing just 10 minutes

“This win is for him.” – Arnas Velicka, Lithuania, dedicating the win to injured Rokas Jokubaitis

Upset Nvidia says America’s GAIN AI Act tries to solve a ‘Chinese problem’ that does not exist; says: We never …

Nvidia reportedly is very upset with the new AI Act — AI GAIN Act — introduced recently. Nvidia has voiced strong concerns that the proposed AI GAIN Act would stifle global competition and negatively impact the American economy. The company said that the bill could have effects similar to the AI Diffusion Rule, which limited the computing power available to different countries.Short for the Guaranteeing Access and Innovation for National Artificial Intelligence Act, the new legislation is part of the National Defense Authorization Act. It would require U.S. chipmakers to prioritize domestic orders for advanced processors before fulfilling international requests.According to a report in Reuters, a spokesperson for Nvidia said that the company never gives priority to foreign customers over American ones. “In trying to solve a problem that does not exist, the proposed bill would restrict competition worldwide in any industry that uses mainstream computing chips,” the spokesperson said. The company added that the US has always been and will continue to be its largest market. Both the AI GAIN Act and the AI Diffusion Rule are efforts by the U.S. government to prioritize domestic needs and ensure American firms have access to high-end chips. This comes amid concerns that China could use advanced AI capabilities to enhance its military.

What AI GAIN Act means for chip companies

If passed, the legislation would impose new trade restrictions, requiring exporters to obtain licenses for shipments of chips that exceed a specific performance threshold. The bill states that it should be U.S. policy to “deny licenses for the export of the most powerful AI chips, including such chips with total processing power of 4,800 or above.” It also aims to restrict the export of advanced chips to foreign entities when U.S. companies are waiting for the same chips. These rules are similar to some of the conditions under former President Joe Biden’s AI Diffusion Rule, which assigned specific levels of computing power to U.S. allies and other nations. The bill outlines specific technical thresholds to classify a chip as ‘advanced,’ taking a page from the Biden administration’s 2023 book when it comes to benchmarks, but making them stronger when it comes to memory bandwidth.Last month, President Donald Trump reportedly made a deal with Nvidia, allowing the company to resume exports of previously banned AI chips to China in exchange for a portion of its sales.

Offshore Crypto Exchange’s Won’t Use FBOT Framework To Do Business in US

The recent Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advisory on offshore exchanges serving US residents under the Foreign Board of Trade (FBOT) framework won’t bring offshore crypto exchanges back to the US, according to Eli Cohen, general counsel at real-world asset (RWA) tokenization company Centrifuge.

Cohen told Cointelegraph that settlement, clearing, and other regulatory requirements designed for the traditional financial system, required to serve US clients under the FBOT framework, are not tailored for crypto exchanges and will be difficult or impossible to fulfill.

The CFTC’s guidance also stipulated that only Licensed Futures Commission (FCM) exchanges, which are broker-dealers for futures contracts, and other highly regulated entities, are qualified to apply under the FBOT framework, Cohen said. He added:

“The main problem is that only regulated exchanges outside the United States can apply for the FBOT. So, you need to have an existing regulatory framework in your home country.”

Many exchanges choose to set up businesses in Seychelles or other unregulated jurisdictions to avoid such a framework in the first place, Cohen added.

The best way to provide clarity for crypto exchanges is to pass a crypto market structure bill in Congress, codifying crypto regulations into law, and creating lasting change that does not shift from administration to administration, Cohen said.

CFTC’s “crypto sprint” promises clarity on regulations and an overhaul of the financial system

The CFTC’s “crypto sprint” is an initiative to overhaul crypto regulations to fulfill US president Donald Trump’s agenda of making the US the global leader in crypto.

Several policy recommendations were proposed in the Trump administration’s crypto report, which was published in July, including giving the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the CFTC joint oversight over crypto.
