  • Blood test that identifies Alzheimer’s disease in minutes

Blood test that identifies Alzheimer’s disease in minutes

Memory complaints show up in clinics every day. Today, about 57 million people live with dementia worldwide, and Alzheimer’s disease causes most cases.

Doctors rely on interviews, brief cognitive checks, and brain scans when available. A clinically available blood test now offers another option that is simple, fast, and accurate.

    Flagging Alzheimer’s in blood

The research team was led by Sebastian Palmqvist at Lund University in Sweden. Their goal was clear: make an accurate test that a regular clinic can use to flag Alzheimer’s biology in people with memory concerns.

In a prospective study of 1,213 patients seen in both family practices and specialty memory clinics, a serum panel correctly identified Alzheimer’s pathology about 88 to 92 percent of the time.

That performance was on par with the accuracy seen when samples were analyzed in batches or as they arrived, which matches how clinics actually work.

The test looks for a specific biomarker in plasma called phosphorylated tau 217, often shortened to p-tau217. It also reads the ratio of amyloid beta 42 to amyloid beta 40, two forms of a protein linked to plaques in Alzheimer’s disease.

These measurements rise or fall in characteristic ways when Alzheimer’s pathology is present. By combining them, the test gives a single probability score that tracks the biology behind memory loss, not just the symptoms.

    Help for primary care doctors

“Primary care doctors’ accuracy in identifying Alzheimer’s disease was 61 per cent, while specialist physicians were correct 73 per cent of the time,” added Sebastian Palmqvist, Associate Professor of Neurology at Lund University and consultant at Skåne University Hospital.

The team compared the test’s performance with doctors’ best clinical judgment before any biomarker results were known and those numbers show why an easy lab test can help the first clinicians who see most patients.

Earlier and more accurate classification steers people to the right next step. It also reduces unnecessary referrals for expensive imaging when the blood test rules out Alzheimer’s biology.

    Inside the APS2 score

The lab algorithm, sometimes called APS2, blends the p-tau217 percentage with the amyloid ratio to estimate the chance of amyloid positivity in the brain. Ratios help account for unrelated medical factors that can nudge a single marker up or down.

Independent research has shown that percent p-tau217 in blood closely matches the clinical performance of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared cerebrospinal fluid tests for detecting Alzheimer’s pathology. Accuracy climbs even higher when labs use two cutoff values, one to rule in and one to rule out.

Clinicians will still need other information in some cases. A subgroup will land in an intermediate zone, which is a cue to order a PET scan or repeat testing rather than guess.

How this fits with current treatments

Treatments that target amyloid require proof of amyloid biology before they start. The FDA granted traditional approval for lecanemab, marketed as Leqembi, for early symptomatic Alzheimer’s treatment.

The agency also approved donanemab, now sold as Kisunla, for adults with early symptoms and confirmed amyloid pathology. As access to these drugs grows, fast triage in regular clinics becomes more important.

“The test is already available in the USA and is likely to become available in many other countries soon. Initially, it will mainly be used in specialist memory clinics, and it may take approximately one to two years to implement guidelines and training in primary care,” concluded Oskar Hansson, Professor of Neurology at Lund University and senior consultant at Skåne University Hospital.

A blood draw in a familiar clinic setting lowers the barrier for people who cannot travel far or wait long.

    Alzheimer’s, blood, and healthcare

A routine blood test is less invasive than a cerebrospinal fluid tap and easier to schedule than advanced imaging. Results can arrive quickly, which helps families move from uncertainty to a clear plan.

An accurate negative result can spare people from months of worry and unnecessary tests. A positive result, combined with a clinical assessment, helps providers arrange the right counseling, safety steps, and referrals.

This test does not replace a full evaluation. Memory changes can come from depression, sleep problems, medications, or other neurological diseases, so clinicians still need to take a careful history and examine the patient.

No test is perfect. A small fraction of results will fall between the lower and upper cutoffs, and that gray zone is best handled with follow up testing or specialty referral.

Local policies will shape how primary clinics use the assay alongside cognitive exams and imaging. Training and clear workflows will help teams decide when to test, how to interpret results, and when to refer.

Researchers will keep studying how comorbid conditions, age, and disease stage affect performance. Automated platforms and standardized reporting should make it easier for labs to deliver consistent results.

The study is published in JAMA.

‘Fuze’ Delivers Adrenaline Rush at Toronto Film Festival

Scottish director David Mackenzie’s new heist thriller, “Fuze,” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival with a prominent cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, and Sam Worthington.

The film is set in central London where the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb on a construction site leads to a large-scale evacuation, creating an opportunity for a criminal gang to plan a bank heist amidst the ensuing chaos. Mackenzie described the film as primarily “straightforward entertainment,” a sentiment echoed by Worthington, who plays one of the robbers and highlighted the movie’s continuous pacing and 91-minute length.

Taylor-Johnson, who previously worked with Mackenzie on “Outlaw King,” stars as bomb disposal expert Will Tranter, while James portrays the gang leader Karalis, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Chief Superintendent Zuzana Greenfield. Mbatha-Raw found her role liberating, having conducted thorough research and shadowed London police officers for preparation.

Taylor-Johnson and James were unable to attend the premiere but conveyed their experiences through a video message. The thriller was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience at Roy Thomson Hall. Following the premiere, Mackenzie suggested the possibility of a sequel. A definitive wider release date for “Fuze” has not yet been announced.

  • Super Junior’s Leeteuk Directly Addresses Dating Allegations With 18 Years Younger Woman

Super Junior’s Leeteuk Directly Addresses Dating Allegations With 18 Years Younger Woman

Photos of him and a woman were shared online.

Super Junior‘s Leeteuk recently spoke up about the recent dating allegations he was facing.

Previously, it was reported that Leeteuk had been spotted on a “date” with a woman, pro golfer Jang So Hee. An account that shared the post claimed that the pair were in a relationship, and previously shared other “evidence” to support the claims.

Popular K-Pop Idol Seemingly Spotted On Date With Rumored 18 Years Younger Girlfriend

Shortly after this, Leeteuk went on a live stream, where he shared that he was aware of the situation and addressed the rumors.

He started by saying he was shocked to see the photos, stating that he shared this with member Shindong. He explained that he and Shindong often go to events at the specific country club, and that there are often other celebrities present who form crews and end up hanging together often.

I saw the photos and was speechless myself because Shindong was sitting beside me at that time, and on his other side his friend was there, too.

    — Leeteuk

Leeteuk then said that he was confused over the photo, which he stated was framed as though he went there alone to meet Jang, who is one of his many golfer friends. He explained that golf is rarely played with just two people, and usually involves a group of at least four and that the location of the photo was a rest area before finishing the last 9 holes.

He also said he was planning on filing a complaint with the golf club, which is meant to be membership only.

I don’t know who snapped the photos and then maliciously made it look like I went out with someone alone. […] I don’t know if a staff member took the photos or who did but the photos looked like we were alone, secluded, and I didn’t have a mask on, just kind of covering my face from the sun. Those modified photos were uploaded. Honestly, I’m very mad. I’m going to file a complaint against the golf club. I will show the photos to the CEO and the manager there and discuss the matter.

    — Leeteuk

One of the pieces of evidence used was Jang wearing a cardigan owned by Leeteuk, which he also explained, saying that after the end of golf gatherings, he usually returns home to shower before rejoining the group. As a result, he may get asked to bring warmer clothing if someone gets cold, which is was happened in this case.

If [the restaurant/location] is close to my place or someone else’s, because I usually don’t shower at the golf club, I would say ‘I’ll head home and shower first.’ Maybe the weather suddenly got chilly, [someone would ask] ‘Please bring a cardigan or something. The pro player is cold.’

    — Leeteuk

Leeteuk then seems to say that he is aware of the person behind the rumors, after previously saying he has been dealing with this for months and that the person is always present when he goes live by himself or is with the members, is is confused about their motives.

I saw what was said and I was like ‘How can someone put two and two together and make up stories?’ I’ve been thinking, I’ve been enduring this for months. […] It’s been nothing but stress. [That person] keeps switching usernames, whenever I go live or do activities with the whole group. That person is always there…and I know who they are. […]It’s been that one person. One.  […]

I’ve thought several times — is this person really my fan? Or does this person want me to make a mistake? What do they want me to do by saying these things? They’re throwing threats here and there. Why? For what?

He also shared that because of this, he and Jang have gotten closer due to him constantly apologizing.

We got even closer because of [that]. Why? Because [she] gets cursed at every day and, of course, I can’t help but feel sorry. ‘Ah, that’s not the case, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’

    — Leeteuk

He finished speaking about the matter with the hopes of the person being stopped from doing this.

Sydney Sweeney Puts Divisive Twist on Sculptural LBD on the Red Carpet

    • Sydney Sweeney put a divisive, Millennial-loved twist on a sculptural black LBD as she stepped out on Saturday, September 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
    • The Christy star turned heads at the Road to the Golden Globes Party.
    • Just hours earlier, she put a NSFW twist on a plunging suit with a completely sheer, lingerie-inspired blazer.

Sydney Sweeney interrupted her corseted style streak at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, instead making a case for an oft-maligned Y2K trend during her latest appearance. While attending the Road to the Golden Globes Party on Saturday night, the Euphoria actress gave a sculptural LBD a divisive update.

Posing on the red carpet, Sweeney—who is promoting her upcoming Christy Martin biopic Christy—emphasized her curves with a bodycon black knee-length dress that was anything but boring. The sleeveless dress had a structural bodice with an unusual rounded neckline and a V-shaped detail at her waist, giving the LBD a flared peplum silhouette.

Sweeney paired the nostalgic, Millennial-loved trend with black leather pointy-toed stilettos and major bombshell beauty. Wearing her golden blonde hair styled in voluminous curls, the American Eagle star complemented her bronzed skin with a matte mauve lipstick and tight-lined black eyeliner. Several diamond cocktail rings added subtle sparkle to her otherwise understated look.

Sweeney has been on a bit of a lingerie-inspired style run, stepping out just hours earlier at a Variety Studio event wearing a NSFW gray tweed suit that took the office siren aesthetic to the next level. The Anyone But You actress showed off her jacket’s ultra-plunging neckline and completely sheer midsection, which got the boudoir treatment thanks to visible boning and sheer mesh material. Meanwhile, at Friday’s Christy premiere, Sweeney wowed in a blush pink corseted silk gown with a plunging sweetheart neckline, a structured bodice with boning running down past her hips, and an asymmetrical layered skirt embellished with a red sash that trailed behind her.

  • ‘I couldn’t do much more’ – Charles Leclerc rues ‘not easy day’ after taking P4 at Monza

‘I couldn’t do much more’ – Charles Leclerc rues ‘not easy day’ after taking P4 at Monza

Charles Leclerc admitted that he “couldn’t do much more” en route to a P4 finish at the Italian Grand Prix, with the Ferrari driver initially battling Oscar Piastri at the start before ultimately crossing the line in fourth.

As the race got underway at Monza, Leclerc made a strong launch off the line from fourth to scrap with Piastri, sparking cheers from the watching Tifosi as he moved up to third. However, the fans’ joy was short-lived as the McLaren then retook the position a few moments later.

From then on Leclerc looked to be struggling to match the pace of the cars ahead and, while he looked quicker again as the race wore on, the Monegasque remained in P4 at the finish line.

“It’s not been an easy day,” said Leclerc after the race. “In the first few laps I tried to fight with Piastri – unfortunately very quickly I overheated all my tyres, and I paid the price for the 10 laps after.

“Then I recovered and then the pace came back to me, but it was very difficult to manage that and to try and gain a position, especially when you don’t have the same pace as the guys in front, so I couldn’t do much more.”

Ferrari had started the weekend by claiming a 1-2 in Friday’s opening practice hour, while Leclerc remained in the top three throughout the other sessions before taking fourth in Saturday’s Qualifying.

In terms of where the pace displayed during the weekend at Monza leaves the team as they head into the next races on the calendar, Leclerc conceded: “I don’t think there was much more we could have done today and this weekend overall I think.

“Yesterday we did a good job with my lap in Q3. I think in the race we did our maximum that we could today, but the Red Bull and the McLaren were just too strong.”

  • Universal Head Donna Langley Regrets Sending ‘Fast & Furious’ to Space

Universal Head Donna Langley Regrets Sending ‘Fast & Furious’ to Space

Even Donna Langley admits that the “Fast and Furious” crew never should have ventured into zero gravity.

“I’m sorry that we sent them into space,” Langley said of the decision to include a widely panned scene involving a rocket car and the International Space Station in 2021’s “F9.”

“We can never get that genie back,” she added.

Langley offered her mea culpa at the Toronto Film Festival as part of a discussion with Cameron Bailey, the festival’s director. However, Langley, who has plays a key role in guiding the franchise as NBCUniversal Studio Group and Chief Content Officer, said part of the success of the long-running series has been its adaptability. She noted that between 2006’s “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and 2009’s “Fast & Furious,” the films decided to shake up their creative direction and make them less about racing culture.

“We knew that we had to figure out how to grow it,” Langley said. “We made a conscious decision to pivot to a sort of a globe-trotting heist scenario.”

Langley credited Vin Diesel with having a deep understanding of the core “Fast and Furious” audience, which came from his embrace of social media.

“Vin was an early adopter of talking to his fans directly,” Langley says. “As we saw that growing, and we saw where the conversation was going. We’ve always been very fan first on the ‘Fast’ franchise.”

In some cases, that’s led the “Fast & Furious” team to rethink major character deaths, including the fate of Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty Ortiz.

“[People would] sort of throw out little things about, ‘Oh God, don’t kill Letty,’” Langley said. “OK, we’ll bring her back. ‘She never died. Don’t worry. Nothing to see here.’ But that’s all led by fan engagement.”

The “Fast & Furious” series has been praised for its inclusive approach to casting. That’s something that Langley says came naturally.

“It’s organically inclusive… it was never a conversation,” Langley said. “It has its roots in downtown L.A. and in car culture, which is a domain largely of people of color, of the Hispanic community. It honors and celebrates it in a really beautiful way.”

Heaviest defeat in ODI history! England break India’s record as South Africa crumble for 72 | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: South Africa endured a nightmarish outing in Southampton on Sunday, slumping to the heaviest defeat in ODI history as England romped to a record 342-run victory. The tourists were bundled out for a paltry 72 in just 20.5 overs while chasing a daunting 415, a collapse that underlined the sheer dominance of Jofra Archer and the destructive brilliance of Jacob Bethell.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!The margin of defeat eclipsed the previous record of 317 runs set by India against Sri Lanka in 2023, making it the biggest win in ODI history when batting first. For South Africa, it was an embarrassment narrowly shy of their lowest ODI total of 69 against Australia back in 1993.England’s commanding position was built on their fifth-highest ODI score, 414/5. Bethell, the 21-year-old left-hander fast-tracked into all formats, played a sparkling knock of 110 off 82 balls — his maiden ODI century — decorated with 13 fours and three sixes. Joe Root added a fluent 100, while Jos Buttler (62 not out) and opener Jamie Smith (62) piled on the misery for South Africa’s bowlers.

    Biggest victory margins in ODIs

    • 342 runs – ENG vs SA, Southampton, 2025
    • 317 runs – IND vs SL, Thiruvananthapuram, 2023
    • 309 runs – AUS vs NED, Delhi, 2023
    • 304 runs – ZIM vs USA, Harare, 2023
    • 302 runs – IND vs SL, Mumbai WS, 2023

But it was Archer who stole the show with the ball. Charging in at over 90 mph, the fast bowler ripped through the top order with figures of 4-18 in nine overs. He removed four of South Africa’s top five, including skipper Aiden Markram in the opening over and the in-form Matthew Breetzke, to leave the Proteas reeling at 18/5. Brydon Carse and Adil Rashid combined to wipe out the tail, with Rashid collecting three wickets.Only Corbin Bosch provided token resistance with 20, while Temba Bavuma’s absence through injury meant the visitors were effectively a batsman short. The result was a welcome boost for England, who had already lost the three-match series after defeats at Headingley and Lord’s. More importantly, it marked a return to form for Archer, whose fitness remains central to England’s hopes in the upcoming Ashes series. For South Africa, the humiliation will sting deeply. Their shot at redemption comes quickly, with a T20I series against England beginning on Wednesday, but this crushing defeat will linger as one of the darkest days in their ODI history.

See Photos From Variety and Chanel’s Female Filmmakers Dinner at TIFF

Variety and Chanel rolled out the red carpet on Saturday night for their annual Women in Film Dinner during the Toronto Film Festival. Shailene Woodley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ethan Hawke, Jessie Buckley, Zachary Quinto and Edgar Ramirez were among the VIP attendees to converge at Soho House for the posh event hosted by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh.

Guests in town with TIFF film, including Bob Odenkirk (“Normal”), James McAvoy (“California Schemin’”) and Ben Foster (“Christy”) nibbled on salmon crudo, shogun maitake and branzino as they toasted this year’s recipients of Chanel’s Women Writers’ Network. The year-round program was created to kickstart the careers of women and non-binary alumni of the TIFF Writers’ Studio.

Setoodeh, along with TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey and Chanel Canada CEO Gregoire Collignon, addressed the revelers with speeches that underscored the strides being made by women behind the camera.

“We understand the importance of representation. Everyone who goes to the movies wants to see themselves reflected on the big screen,” Setoodeh said. “So this is really critical work by Chanel. In the six years that we’ve done this event, we have seen first-time screenwriters meet some of the industry’s biggest actors and directors. We’ve seen producers get to know upcoming talent, and we’ve seen connections at this dinner fuel year-round collaborations.”

For Bailey, whose festival is celebrating its 50th anniversary, men must play a role in inclusion efforts in order for them to succeed.

Added Bailey: “Yes, you’re three dudes up here talking about supporting women. But if men don’t support women in film, change does not happen. So we are here because we are committed to the goals of this program. … We are in a celebratory mood. There’s a lot to celebrate over the last five decades of what we do. And part of it is the change that we have made. The evolution we have made in terms of representation. … We are committed to ensure that women and non-binary creators are empowered to lead the future of cinema.”

Woodley, Mbatha-Raw and Buckley are all Chanel brand ambassadors, as were others in attendance like “Couture” director Alice Winocour and stars Anyier Anei and Ella Rumpf, as well as “Franz” actress Katharina Stark and London Rapper Little Simz.

Odenkirk — who was accompanied by his wife, manager Naomi Odenkirk — talked about how he plans to show his “Fargo”-esque dark comedy “Normal” to the law enforcement community. The film, which sees Odenkirk playing a small-town sheriff, will spark conversations about inclusivity. “I know a lot of cops, and I want them to see this movie. It’s important for them to see this type of representation onscreen.”
