  • Nova Launcher is shutting down, and Android fans are heartbroken

Nova Launcher is shutting down, and Android fans are heartbroken

    Damien Wilde / Android Authority

    TL;DR

    • Nova Launcher, one of Android’s best customization tools, is shutting down for good.
    • Founder Kevin Barry made the announcement over the weekend, confirming that he’s leaving the company that owns Nova and that the launcher won’t be released as an open-source project.
    • Android fans are heartbroken about Nova’s shutdown, calling it a “legendary” app that contributed to the success of Android as a platform.

A beloved Android customization tool is coming to an end. Nova Launcher, long known for being one of the best third-party launchers you can get for your Android phones, is officially shutting down, and users who have relied on it for over a decade are mourning the loss.

Nova’s founder and original developer, Kevin Barry, made the announcement over the weekend. On September 6, Barry posted a message confirming that he had left Branch, the analytics firm that acquired Nova Launcher in 2022, and would no longer be involved with the project.

What will you do now that Nova Launcher is shutting down?

“I’ve been the only one working on Nova for the past year,” Barry wrote in his farewell message titled “So Long. ”

“I needed to let you know that I have left Branch and am no longer involved with Nova Launcher,” he said.

Barry went on to explain that he had been preparing to release Nova as open source, cleaning up the codebase and coordinating with legal teams. Branch’s leadership had publicly promised that if he ever left, the code would be handed to the community. However, Barry said he was ultimately asked to stop work on the open-source effort.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

Nova Launcher has been one of the best third-party replacement home screen launchers for Android since its debut. It allows users to deeply tweak their home screens, gestures, and app drawer in ways that go well beyond what stock launchers have to offer.

However, the app’s journey has been uncertain since Branch acquired it in 2022. The deal gave Nova access to deep user analytics that powered new experimental features. But by 2024, Branch had laid off over a hundred developers, leaving Barry as the sole maintainer of the launcher. The app’s last stable update arrived in May 2024. With Barry now out, Nova Launcher doesn’t seem to have much of a future.

Understandably, Nova’s loyal fans are extremely upset about its demise. Reddit threads are filled with appreciation posts and tributes from users calling Nova “legendary” for shaping their Android experience.

“Very sad. Nova is legendary. It has contributed to the success of Android as a platform and has been the go-to on my devices for years. It’s still working great for me on multiple devices, so no immediate need to change, but I suppose it’s time to start exploring alternatives,” said one user.

“Nova has been with me every day since my first smartphone, even on my brand new S25 bought last month. It was such a fruitful purchase. Thank you for all those years of dedication,” said another user.

“From my Nexus 5 to my S23U, I’ve been a Nova user. Thank you for all your work,” yet another user chimed in.

Barry also responded to some of the comments, saying, “Reddit comments have always been hard for me, and today is a hard day. I intended to just turn off the internet after my announcement but didn’t have the self control. I appreciate the comments like yours.”

For now, Nova Launcher still works and is downloadable. However, without active development or an open-source release, it will eventually become redundant. Here are some Nova Launcher alternatives if you’re looking to switch.

S&P Global expects dated Brent crude to hit $55 per barrel by year-end

Dated Brent crude prices are likely to fall to around $55 per barrel by year-end, an S&P Global executive said at the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference on Monday.

Brent crude futures were up about 0.5% on Monday at $65.84 per barrel after OPEC+ agreed over the weekend to raise output from October at a slower pace than in previous months, on expectations of weaker global demand.

“We still see prices coming down closer to the $55 a barrel dated Brent, with OPEC continuing to unwind production into the market,” said Dave Ernsberger, co-president, S&P Global Commodity Insights.

“If there’s a massive surplus, if Russian oil continues to flow into the market, if stock-building stops and some of this stuff goes into commercial inventory, contangos blow out, we can see a lower price than that,” he said.

Contango occurs when prompt prices are lower than those in future months, indicating comfortable supplies.

Dated Brent is used to price more than 60% of globally traded crude and underpins oil futures.

  • All IT work to involve AI by 2030, says Gartner • The Register

All IT work to involve AI by 2030, says Gartner • The Register

All work in IT departments will be done with the help of AI by 2030, according to analyst firm Gartner, which thinks massive job losses won’t result.

Speaking during the keynote address of the firm’s Symposium event in Australia today, VP analyst Alicia Mullery said 81 percent of work is currently done by humans acting alone without AI assistance. Five years from now Gartner believes 75 percent of IT work will be human activity augmented by AI, with the remainder performed by bots alone.

Distinguished VP analyst Daryl Plummer said this shift will mean IT departments gain labor capacity and will need to show they deserve to keep it. “You never want to look like you have too many people,” he advised, before suggesting technology leaders consult with peers elsewhere in a business to identify value-adding opportunities IT departments can execute.

Plummer said Gartner doesn’t foresee an “AI jobs bloodbath” in IT or other industries for at least five years, adding that just one percent of job losses today are attributable to AI. He and Mullery did predict a reduction in entry-level jobs, as AI lets senior staff tackle work they would once have assigned to juniors.

The two analysts also forecast that businesses will struggle to implement AI effectively, because the costs of running AI workloads balloon. ERP, Plummer said, has straightforward up-front costs: You pay to license and implement it, then to train people so they can use it.

AI needs that same initial investment but few organizations can keep up with AI vendors’ pace of innovation. Adopting AI therefore creates a requirement for near-constant exploration of use cases and subsequent retraining.

Plummer said orgs that adopt AI should expect to uncover 10 unanticipated ancillary costs, among them the need to acquire new datasets, and the costs of managing multiple models.

The need to use one AI model to check the output of others – a necessary step to verify accuracy – is another cost to consider.

AI’s hidden costs mean Gartner believes 65 percent of CIOs aren’t breaking even on AI investments.

Plummer and Mullery nonetheless suggested IT execs pursue AI, and recommended the big four hyperscalers – AWS, Microsoft, Google and Alibaba – as key suppliers because they are the equivalent of geopolitical superpowers in terms of their ability to marshal resources and talent. They labeled OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, DeepSeek and XAI “wildcard vendors” and said all are “not enterprise ready.”

Plummer told The Register OpenAI just hasn’t done the work to create licenses that cautious enterprise buyers need. He said the company has done too little to integrate its offerings with common enterprise software like Microsoft 365, even though that suite’s Copilot AI components rely on OpenAI technology.

The pair also advised IT execs to quickly move past AI-powered chatbots, and instead adopt interactive agents capable of doing things like autonomously conducting negotiations with suppliers. ®

  • Leslie Mann in Maude Apatow’s Directorial Bow

Leslie Mann in Maude Apatow’s Directorial Bow

Maude Apatow’s directorial debut Poetic License is an intergenerational coming-of-age film about an aimless middle-aged wife and mother who comes into the lives of two college students with problems of their own. When her husband (Method Man) accepts a position as an economics professor at a prestigious university, Liz (Leslie Mann) decides to audit a poetry class to fill her time while their daughter Dora (Nico Parker) starts her last year of high school. In a new town full of people she doesn’t know, Liz is floundering while both her husband and daughter quickly adjust and make new friends. When Sam (Andrew Barth Feldman) and Ari (Cooper Hoffman) meet her in poetry class, Liz becomes a romantic fixation for both of them. But Liz is oblivious to their feelings and the growing rivalry between the two for her attention and affection — she’s too busy obsessing over Dora and the looming realization that her daughter doesn’t need her as much anymore.

As a former couples therapist, Liz immediately clocks the codependent relationship between Ari and Sam, spending time with them mainly because she’s intrigued by their dynamic. Ari is a rich kid who lives alone in a lavish apartment with no ambition beyond getting Sam to move in with him. But Sam would rather live in the dorms and be an RA, while working on his degree in economics. Sam also has a girlfriend (Maisy Stella) whose presence is a constant source of annoyance for Ari.

    Poetic License

    The Bottom Line

Warm and well-acted but disappointingly generic.

Venue: Toronto International Film Festival (Special Presentations)
Cast: Leslie Mann, Cooper Hoffman, Andrew Barth Feldman, Nico Parker, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Martha Kelly, Maisy Stella, Will Price
    Director: Maude Apatow
    Writer: Raffi Donatich

    1 hour 57 minutes

But both boys agree on Liz, asking for her advice and approval at every turn. She gives her time to them freely, simultaneously revisiting her youth while also acting as a parental figure. And despite her lack of confidence, Liz gives Sam and Ari some solid advice throughout their time together.

Mann, Hoffman and Feldman are clearly having a good time, and their comedic chemistry carries the film. But for the most part, Poetic License feels just as aimless as Liz, wandering from scene to scene without much of a vision. Each scene seems to end too quickly, not giving the characters and their dialogue enough space to breathe. Even in the emotional moments, the audience is never given time to sit with the meaning behind what’s being said. The scenes in the poetry class feel perfunctory, suggesting no real interest in writing, form or meter. The professor (Martha Kelly) never actually teaches her students anything, instead rambling about her ongoing divorce and conflicts with her soon to be ex-wife. Kelly is funny in the role, but she never feels like a poetry professor and there’s a sense that if the film had centered on just a regular creative writing class everything would have played out in the exact same way.

Nothing feels specific about Poetic License and all the details seem randomly chosen. “Poetry” and “economics” are portrayed like topics drawn out of a hat, with no real reasoning behind their inclusion in the narrative. We don’t know why Sam or Liz’s husband are into economics in the first place or what it means for both these characters to share an area of study. We also don’t know why Ari is taking the poetry class at all, or even what his major is.

The film’s script, written by Raffi Donatich, works best as an exploration of the troubled bonds between Ari, Sam, Liz and Dora. But everything around them comes off as superficial, with interchangeable details that only serve to set the scene. This gives the movie a generic quality, most obvious in the scenes involving Liz’s husband. Method Man seems lost in Poetic License, woefully miscast as a no-nonsense academic with no real personality to speak of. His role in Liz’s life functions as a built-in barrier to ensure that the film’s love triangle has no real romantic stakes. Parker fares a bit better as Liz’s level-headed daughter, even though her personality is just as ill-defined as her father’s.

As a first-time director, Apatow shows some promise, especially in the tender scenes between Mann and Parker. Apatow shoots Mann with the eye of an adoring daughter, in awe of her mother’s seemingly effortless humor and warmth. The camera also loves Hoffman, who quietly steals the movie whenever he’s onscreen, giving dimension to a character who could so easily come off obnoxious.

Despite its shortcomings, Poetic License is a film with a big heart populated by talented actors genuinely having fun with their characters. It’s a shame, then, that the story begins to fade from memory as soon as the credits roll.

Brain damage alert: Even one milkshake can damage the brain in a matter of hours

What you eat has a crucial impact on your health. What if we tell you that your occasional indulgence could be killing your brain? Yes, you heard that right. And if you are a fitness enthusiast who religiously takes cheat days every week, you may want to think twice. Something as little as ‘a’ milkshake can harm your brain. A new study has found that a single high-fat meal, such as a milkshake, could impair blood flow to the brain and potentially increase the risk of stroke and dementia. The findings of the study are published in The Journal of Nutritional Physiology.

Study explores ways to help patients with serious brain injury

How high-fat meals impair brain function

    milkshake

Dietary fat is an important part of our diet. It plays a crucial role in providing energy. They function as structural building blocks of the body, carry fat-soluble vitamins, are involved in vital physiological processes in the body, and are indispensable for a number of important biological functions, including growth and development. We consume two types of fat – saturated and unsaturated (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated). They are different in their chemical composition and also have different effects on the body. The new study found that consuming a high-fat diet, such as milkshakes or greasy food, has an immediate effect on the body. They can impact the ability of blood vessels to constrict. Eating a meal that is high in saturated fat can not only affect the heart but also the brain.

    The study

To understand what happens to the brain during this time and how well its blood supply is protected, the researchers studied two groups of men. 20 of them were aged between 18 and 35, while the rest 21 were aged between 60 and 80. Their blood vessels linked to the heart and brain were examined. The participants were fed a high-saturated fat meal, and then after four hours, they were re-examined. The researchers picked milkshake as the high-fat meal. They called it ‘the brain bomb’, as it consisted mostly of heavy whipping cream. The drink had 1,362 calories and 130g of fat, which mimicked the fat load of a fast-food takeaway.

    brain

The results showed that a high-fat meal impairs the ability of the blood vessels linked to heart health to open in both young and old participants. These impairments reduced the brain’s ability to buffer changes in blood. These effects were more pronounced (by about 10%) in the older adults, which means older brains may be more vulnerable to the effects of the meal.“Our study highlights the importance of consuming a diet that is low in saturated fat to protect not only our heart health, but also our brain health. This is particularly important for older adults whose brains appear to be more vulnerable to the effects of such a meal and are already at increased risk of stroke and neurodegenerative diseases,” the researchers said.

Pressure Points: The Hidden Dangers of High BP

The researchers said that though an occasional high-fat meal is ‘unlikely to cause harm’, it can still have a ‘measurable impact’. “Even one fatty meal has an immediate effect on the body,” they said.

  • Separately the Ukrainian president said he was counting on a strong US response to the largest ever Russian barrage on Ukraine.
