The wonderkids who did not make it in the Premier League

Club: Tottenham Debut: 15 August 1992 Premier League appearances: 20 Goals: 3

Former winger Turner became the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer at 17 years and 166 days – striking a late winner for Tottenham against Everton on 5 September 1992, less than a month into the new competition’s first season. His record stood for nearly five years before being broken by Michael Owen at Liverpool.

Having been given his debut in 1992 – when Terry Venables, Doug Livermore and Ray Clemence were in charge of the team – Turner fell out of favour under Ossie Ardiles before a serious ankle injury sent him on a nomadic career with numerous loan spells in the Football League.

“Everytime someone young scores a goal, people mention it to me,” Turner, who is now head of development at Hednesford Town, tells BBC Sport. “It is quite nice to reminisce and to know exactly how people in this scenario are feeling.

“When I saw Rio Ngumoha score, his story reminded me of my own. He played well in pre-season and took his chance and I was similar, then being given an opportunity in the first team. He came off the bench and scored in the last minute like me.

“Young players need to be good enough and these guys are special talents. In my season at Spurs when I played, I was managed very well. I was told when I was going to be involved, my parents were kept updated and there was a plan.

“The evening before I made my debut, Mr Venables rang my dad and said make sure I don’t go out and go to sleep early because I was going to play on Saturday. He was a fantastic man and when I had problems he would invite me to his office and make me a cup of tea.

“We lost 6-2 at Liverpool towards the end of that season but I wasn’t involved in the game and he took me to the centre circle and said: ‘It’s good here, isn’t it?’ He told me to see him on Monday for a new long-term contract. By that morning, he was sacked.”

Netizens call out double standards of man lecturing Redditor about ‘informal’ replies: ‘WhatsApp ain’t formal’

A Redditor was left agitated after a man, who used the word “dude” himself, lectured him about his “informal” replies during a WhatsApp chat. Netizens quickly took note of his double standards and highlighted that WhatsApp is not a formal platform.

    Here’s what happened:

According to the viral post, a man randomly contacted the Redditor on LinkedIn about a job he didn’t apply for.

“After a short back-and-forth there, we moved to WhatsApp for convenience. We discussed the budget, the company, and all that. Then I shared my portfolio and resume (PDF),” the post, which was accompanied by a screenshot of the chat, read.

“…then out of nowhere, he decided to lecture me about how my replies should be more ‘formal’,” it added.

“Like, dude, I didn’t even apply for this job; you came to me. If “Okay, cool” is enough to turn you off, then honestly, I don’t care,” the Redditor said, highlighting the man’s “fragile ego”.

    What did the screenshot show?

In the screenshot, the man, likely a recruiter, was thrown off by the Redditor’s “okay, cool” response.

“Usually the reply should be ok thanks,” the man said, adding that if the Redditor is trying to look for a job, “it’s better to be formal”. However, the man, who used ‘dude’ to address the Redditor, added that he was talking generally and not about his company.

“People will judge you more on your communication than skills. It’s just an advice,” the person said.

    Here’s how netizens reacted:

Social media users were irked by the message exchange and said, “WhatsApp is not a place for formal communications.”

“Addressing someone as ‘dude’ is very formal, eh? What a clown,” a user quipped. Another added, “double standards”.

“The only mistake I see here is you reacting to that gyaan. I’ve responded to HR manager that has atleast 20 years of XP with ‘aha! Sounds cool’ & she didn’t give me a dumb response like this. Pretty sure this dude gets offended if someone doesn’t address him as sir & uses name,” said a user.

A netizen said, “WhatsApp is usually not a place for formal communications.”

“If you are chatting on WhatsApp, it ain’t a formal conversation,” added another.

“Most people in corporate India cannot string a grammatically proper sentence together,” a user highlighted.

“That thumbs up must’ve hurt his ego so hard. Good going!” a user quipped.

However, a few users saw reason, and said, “He was trying to be a brother to him, it’s understandable.. if he scolded him formally then the candidate would generate hate for him.”

“He called him ‘dude’ to let him know ‘this behaviour is ok with me, but it has a high possibility to land u in trouble with other people, like the ones who care about such things.. it seems like a good interaction,” the user added.

  • US tariff tensions hit Chinese export growth | Business

US tariff tensions hit Chinese export growth | Business

    Business live

    Today’s headlines

    The agenda

China’s export growth slowed to the lowest in six months in August, as Beijing shipped less to the US amid tariff tensions.

Exports from China rose by 4.4% year-on-year, according to official figures, less than economists had expected, and down from July’s better-than-expected 7.2% increase. Imports grew by 1.3%, down from a 4.1% rise in July.

Beijing’s shipments to the US fell by 33% while exports to southeast Asian nations rose by 22.5%. Policymakers want manufacturers to shift to other markets in light of Donald Trump’s erratic trade policy.

The US president delayed sweeping tariffs on China in mid-August, announcing another 90-day pause just hours before the last agreement between the the world’s two largest economies was due to expire.

Trump had threatened tariffs on China as high as 245%, with China threatening retaliatory tariffs of 125%. However, Chinese imports are subject to a a baseline tariff of 10% and a 20% extra levy in response to fentanyl smuggling allegations against China. Some products are taxed at higher rates.

China’s trade surplus rose to $102.3bn in August from $98.2bn in July, but below June’s $114.8bn. Analysts are waiting to see whether officials will rollout extra fiscal support measures in the fourth quarter to revive domestic demand.

Separately, Germany’s exports fell unexpectedly in July while industrial production rose.

Shipments from Europe’s biggest economy dropped by 0.6% from the previous month, against economists’ forecasts of a 0.1% gain. Imports were also down, by 0.1%. The country’s foreign trade surplus reduced to €14.7bn from €15.4bn in June, and compared with €17.7bn in July 2024.

On a brighter note, German industrial production rose by 1.3% in July.

Oil prices climbed, recouping some of last week’s losses, after the oil cartel Opec and allies such as Russia, known as Opec+, agreed over the weekend to raise output at a slower pace from October on expectations of weaker global demand. The possibility of more sanctions on Russia, a major oil exporter, also rose after Moscow’s overnight strike on Ukraine.

Brent crude rose by 1.5% to $66.45 a barrel.

On Sunday, eight members of OPEC+ agreed to lift production from October by 137,000 barrels per day, far below the monthly increases of 555,000 bpd in September and August, and 411,000 bpd in July and June.

  • Paul Graham: Why You Should Not Launch a Startup in High School

Paul Graham: Why You Should Not Launch a Startup in High School

Paul Graham, the cofounder of startup incubator Y Combinator, said on Saturday that students should think twice before launching their startups in high school.

“The thing to do now is to learn new things and increase your skill at the things you already know,” Graham wrote in a post on X.

“Startups are rarely the optimal way to do this. The point of a startup is to make something people want, not to learn,” he added.

Representatives for Graham at Y Combinator did not respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

Graham said it probably isn’t the best idea for a high schooler to start their entrepreneurship journey right away, even though they could learn from the experience.

“You will learn things in a startup, of course. But the way to learn the fastest is to work on whatever you’re most curious about, and you don’t have that luxury in a startup. In a startup, you have to work on whatever users want most,” he wrote in a follow-up post on X.

Most prominent startup founders began their ventures after graduating from high school. Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard during their junior and sophomore years, respectively.

Some, like SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, earned their bachelor’s degrees before starting their first companies.

Graham has posted career advice on X. In August, Graham said in a series of X posts that the best way to secure one’s job in the age of AI is to focus on honing one’s passions.

“What AI (in its current form) is good at is not so much certain jobs, but a certain way of working. It’s good at scutwork. So that’s the thing to avoid,” Graham wrote.

In his post, Graham said low-level programming jobs “are already disappearing.”

Top programmers, meanwhile, are still “being paid exceptional amounts,” he added.

“So if I had to boil down my advice to one sentence, it would be: Find a kind of work that you’re so interested in that you’ll learn to do it better than AI can,” Graham wrote.

NDMA warns of flood risk amid heavy rains in Sindh, Balochistan

ISLAMABAD, Sep 09 (APP):The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Tuesday warned of possible flooding in parts of Sindh and Balochistan due to expected widespread rainfall over the next 48 hours.

In its alert, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) cautioned residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

The NDMA warned that low-lying and urban areas could face inundation, while traffic disruptions are also anticipated.

According to the alert, thunderstorms accompanied by rain are expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Dadu, Jacobabad, and other districts across Sindh.

NDMA warns of flood risk amid heavy rains in Sindh, Balochistan

Intermittent downpours are expected in Sukkur, Rohri, Larkana, Shikarpur, Ghotki, and Kashmore, while flash flooding is feared in the Kirthar Range due to hill torrents.

In Balochistan, heavy rains are forecast over the next 24 hours in southern and eastern districts, raising concerns of possible flooding and related hazards.

Heavy rains are expected in Lasbela, Hub, Khuzdar, Awaran, Barkhan, Sui, Sibi, Dera Bugti, Naseerabad, Kohlu, Kalat, and Zhob. Showers are also likely in Kech, Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara, Surab, and southern Washuk.

The forecast warns that intense rainfall may cause flash floods in Wadh, Khuzdar, Bela, Ormara, and Hingol Valley, with risks to mud houses, agricultural lands, and link roads.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel and steer clear of weak structures and trees during the anticipated spell of heavy rainfall.

Citizens are urged to park vehicles in safe locations and refrain from crossing waterlogged roads and underpasses to prevent accidents and disruptions.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been cautioned to limit movement and take all necessary precautions to ensure personal safety.

  • Rick Davies, Supertramp frontman and co-founder, dies aged 81 | Music

Rick Davies, Supertramp frontman and co-founder, dies aged 81 | Music

Rick Davies, the co-founder, vocalist and songwriter for the British band Supertramp, has died aged 81.

The musician died at home on Long Island last week “after a long illness”, the band said in a statement released on Sunday.

Davies, who wrote and sang hits including Goodbye Stranger and Bloody Well Right, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer concentrated in bone marrow that affects white blood cells, in 2015. His diagnosis and need for “aggressive treatment” meant the band had to cancel a reunion tour around Europe later that year.

“The Supertramp Partnership is very sad to announce the death of the Supertramp founder Rick Davies after a long illness,” read the band’s statement on Sunday.

“We had the privilege of knowing him, and playing with him for over 50 years. We offer our sincere condolences to [Davies’ wife and the band’s manager] Sue Davies.”

On social media, the band remembered Davies’ “warmth, resilience, and devotion to his wife Sue” and credited him as “the voice and pianist behind Supertramp’s most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock music history.

“His soulful vocals and unmistakable touch on the Wurlitzer became the heartbeat of the band’s sound … Rick’s music and legacy continue to inspire many and bears testament to the fact that great songs never die, they live on.”

Born in Swindon in 1944, Davies was a musician from a young age, developing a love of music after listening to Gene Krupa’s Drummin’ Man, first training as a drummer and later as a keyboardist. In 1969 he placed an advertisement in Melody Maker for musicians to join the new band he was forming, to which musician Roger Hodgson replied. After a brief period performing as Daddy, the group renamed themselves Supertramp, with Davies and Hodgson both serving as frontmen.

Supertramp’s breakthrough came with Bloody Well Right, written by Davies, and they grew more and more successful, with hits including Give a Little Bit and The Logical Song, both written and sung by Hodgson with Davies on keys.

Their 1979 album Breakfast in America has sold more than 30m copies worldwide and won two Grammy awards. The album included hits The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home and the titular track.

Davies was the only original member still in the band, with Hodgson having left in 1983 to pursue a solo career amid a series of creative disputes.

Hodgson and Davies’ company Delicate Music continued to distribute the band’s publishing royalties until 2018. Other members of Supertramp sued Hodgson and Davies over royalties in 2021, but settled with Davies in 2023. Just last month, a US judge ordered Hodgson to give three members of the band songwriting royalties on three songs.

Davies continued to perform even after his cancer diagnosis, often under the name Ricky and the Rockets.

Davies is survived by his wife, Sue, who has been Supertramp’s manager since 1984.

  • Bethesda teases Terran Armada on Starfield anniversary

Bethesda teases Terran Armada on Starfield anniversary

On Starfield’s second anniversary, Bethesda dropped a cryptic teaser that’s reignited excitement — and intense speculation — among its fans. A celebratory video shared on social media quickly turned mysterious, with glitched visuals and altered music revealing a hidden message: “Terran Armada.”

The discovery, made by eagle-eyed fans who rearranged video frames, has sparked theories across the community. Many believe Terran Armada could be the long-awaited second DLC, potentially exploring Earth or factions connected to its downfall. Ideas range from generation ships returning to a ruined Earth to a new enemy faction of Terran survivors evoking Mad Max vibes.

In Starfield’s lore, Earth became a lifeless wasteland after its magnetosphere collapsed in 2203 — a side effect of the Grav Drive’s invention. The planet now lies abandoned, exposed to radiation and geological chaos. A return to this setting could offer a darker, more grounded narrative.

However, some speculate Terran Armada might not be DLC at all, but a smaller update meant to bridge the gap before the next major expansion.

Bethesda has remained tight-lipped, offering only vague hints. In a recent video, veteran developer Tim Lamb confirmed work is ongoing on a new DLC story and improvements to space gameplay, promising updates fans have “been asking for,” along with “new game systems” and creator-made content.

Still, the wait continues. After the lukewarm reception to 2024’s Shattered Space DLC and news that the PS5 port and next expansion might not arrive until 2026, fans are growing restless.

“We’re beyond starved at this point,” wrote one redditor. “Next trailer or update is gonna hit us like a nuke.”
