    Govt unveils sweeping rail reforms

    LAHORE:

The government on Sunday outlined major reforms for Pakistan Railways, including an imminent agreement on the Rohri–Karachi section, a Rs50 billion allocation to upgrade the Lahore–Rawalpindi track, reducing travel time to two hours and the digitisation of the railway system.

The development came as Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi addressed the “Meet the Press” event at the Lahore Press Club.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister announced “sweeping reforms” to modernise the sector, highlighting improvements such as outsourcing cleaning services at seven stations across Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore, enhancing food quality, and installing free Wi-Fi at Lahore Railway Station.

He highlighted key infrastructure upgrades, including a soon-to-be-finalised agreement for the Rohri–Karachi railway section and a Rs50 billion allocation by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to upgrade the Lahore-Rawalpindi track, reducing travel time to two hours.

Escalators and information desks have been introduced at stations, and a 105-kilometer railway track for coal transport is set to be completed by April 30, reducing electricity costs from Rs15 to Rs4.5 per unit. Additionally, a business train with Wi-Fi-equipped coaches and high-quality dining will be inaugurated on July 29 by PM Shehbaz Sharif.

The minister announced plans to digitise the railway system, link sixteen banks to the railways app, and install ATMs at 348 stations. To address inefficiencies, three railway companies have been shut down, and long-leave employees would be recalled.

“Pakistan Railways is the pride of Pakistan,” Abbasi declared, promising to make it profitable if the federal government covers pensions and salaries. He stressed that the railways issues stem not from labourers but from unnamed individuals who looted the system.

He emphasised the need for investment in railways to boost the national economy, warning that major reforms are imminent and bureaucratic inefficiencies will not be tolerated.

Addressing employment concerns, Abbasi revealed a compassionate approach to contract workers. “We could dismiss contract employees with a one-month salary, but instead, we are considering reassigning railway sanitation staff to their local areas,” he shared, signaling a commitment to employee welfare.

The “Suthra Punjab” initiative will be extended to Railway colonies, aiming to enhance living conditions for staff and their families. Abbasi also claimed unprecedented improvements in cleanliness across the railway system, stating, “The level of cleanliness we have now achieved in Railways has never been seen before.”

Cracking down on illegal activities, Abbasi issued a stern warning against ticketless travel and related offenses. “Smuggling and theft used to plague Railways. Now, anyone traveling without a ticket or aiding such activities will face imprisonment,” he cautioned.

To bolster security, Pakistan Railways has recruited 500 new personnel for the Railway Police and plans to acquire scanners and metal detectors using the department’s own budget.

Claressa Shields ‘seriously pursuing’ fight with Muhammad Ali’s daughter | Boxing News

Claressa Shields is ‘seriously pursuing’ a fight against Muhammad Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali, after successfully retaining her undisputed heavyweight championship.

The American star, who is a multi-weight world champion, defeated Lani Daniels by unanimous decision in front of 15,366 fans at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Shields could now switch her attention to a showdown with the 47-year-old Laila Ali, who hasn’t boxed since 2007, but held a world title in her unbeaten career.

Dmitriy Salita, who promotes Shields, told Sky Sports: “Claressa Shields continues to break barriers and elevate the sport of boxing with every move she makes.

“Following her historic win in Detroit, we’re focused on keeping her active and aligned with her mission – fighting the biggest and best.

    Image:
Laila Ali has not boxed since 2007

“A matchup with Laila Ali would be a monumental moment in sports history: the daughter of the GOAT vs the GWOAT, two generational icons whose stories transcend boxing. That’s a fight we’re seriously pursuing.”

Shields defeated Savannah Marshall, avenging her only boxing defeat while an amateur, to become an undisputed middleweight champion in front of a massive audience at The O2.

But Salita believes the two-time Olympic gold medallist can still reach new heights in her trailblazing career.

“At the same time, Claressa’s legacy is still being written,” he told Sky Sports. “She’s a symbol of inspiration and resilience, and we’re working on opportunities that push new boundaries – title defences, new weight classes, and global events that continue to grow the sport.

“What she’s done is already historic, but what’s ahead may be even greater.”

The company says the expansion will add to its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and enable local organizations—including startups and public institutions—to access AI infrastructure and sovereign cloud services.

Separately, Oracle will invest $2 billion in its Frankfurt cloud region over the same five-year period. The U.S. company stated that the investment in Germany is intended to support public and private sector organizations looking to adopt AI and cloud computing, including those in highly regulated industries.

Earlier this week, Oracle and OpenAI announced plans to expand Stargate — OpenAI’s large-scale AI infrastructure project — with an additional 4.5 GW of data center capacity in the U.S.

The expansion is expected to create over 100,000 jobs across construction, operations, manufacturing, and services, adding that this estimate includes direct full-time jobs needed to operate Stargate data centers, short-term construction roles, and indirect jobs like manufacturing and local service roles.

At its core, the Stargate scheme plans to build a network of AI data centers across the United States. The initiative aims to provide sufficient capacity to meet growing demand for AI across several sectors including scientific research, healthcare, automation, defense, and finance.

  • Joe Locke wraps Heartstopper finale filming: “Bye Charlie”

Joe Locke wraps Heartstopper finale filming: “Bye Charlie”

Heartstopper star Joe Locke has officially wrapped filming on the highly anticipated finale of the hit Netflix adaptation, signaling the end of an emotional journey for fans of the show.

Locke shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, writing “Bye Charlie X” alongside behind-the-scenes images with co-star Kit Connor, thanking fans and the creative team behind the series.

The final chapter of Heartstopper, based on the sixth volume of Alice Oseman’s beloved graphic novel series, was adapted as a film instead of a traditional season. Directed by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice) and written by Oseman herself, the finale has been in production for nearly two months.

Kit Connor also confirmed the wrap via social media, closing the book on Nick and Charlie’s story. In the final chapter, the couple faces the challenges of a long-distance relationship as Nick prepares to leave for university and Charlie gains new independence at school. Their emotional journey mirrors the personal growth of their circle of friends as they navigate love, change, and letting go.

Speaking to The Playlist, Locke explained that filming a feature-length finale was a practical decision. “We realized the only way to get it made this year is if we do a film… It makes it feel more cinematic and gives it the ending it deserves,” he said.

The Heartstopper finale film now moves into post-production, with fans eagerly awaiting its release and one last goodbye to Charlie and Nick’s coming-of-age story.

  • ‘We faced the Southport killer shoulder to shoulder’

‘We faced the Southport killer shoulder to shoulder’

PCSO Tim Parry, Sgt Greg Gillespie and PC Luke Holden were the first officers on the scene

Warning: This article contains distressing and upsetting details.

“The only thing any of us knew when we turned up was that there was a child on the floor on Hart Street who had been stabbed and the offender was in the building.”

Nothing could have prepared Sgt Greg Gillespie for the events of 29 July 2024, which claimed the lives of three young girls.

Called to reports of a stabbing at a dance studio in Southport, he arrived to an unfolding scene of horror.

“I remember people in the road waving me down,” he said.

“I just could see the look of fear and terror in the faces of the people there and then getting out of the car and hearing them screaming and shouting.”

Sgt Gillespie said he saw a little girl, whom he thought was dead.

She managed to survive, despite being stabbed more than 30 times.

“I don’t think there’s any amount of training or experience that can quite prepare you to deal with something like that or to process it,” he added.

PC Luke Holden, who arrived shortly after with PCSO Timothy Parry, said he remembered hearing his colleague’s words on his radio.

“The way he spoke, confirming the address and the scene he faced… I could just hear sort of terror in Greg’s voice,” he said.

Sgt Gillespie said he decided in a moment that they had to deal with whatever was happening in the building.

“We just knew the right thing was that we couldn’t wait for armed response back-up,” he said.

“We didn’t know where they were [but] it was that urgent.

“Everyone now knows the sequence of events that occurred that day – that wasn’t known to us at the time.”

He said all they knew was that a child had been stabbed and “the offender was in the building”.

PC Holden vividly remembers what happened next.

“Greg looked at me and said ‘are you ready?’”

He said he replied with a simple “yeah” and then the pair went “shoulder to shoulder” into the building.

    ‘Unfathomable’

Almost immediately, they were face-to-face with 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana who, unbeknown to the officers, had walked into the studio and attacked the children who had been enjoying a school holiday Taylor Swift-themed workshop.

“He was showing us the knife, holding it out in front of us, blood-stained,” Sgt Gillespie said.

“It was almost like he was saying, ‘I’ve got a knife, what are you going to do?’”

Sgt Gillespie said the youth’s attitude seemed to change, as if when he saw that the officers “weren’t scared of him, he didn’t want to know”.

“It would be quite hard to paint him as more of a coward than he already is, but I think that says a lot for me,” Sgt Gillespie added.

The attack on Hart Street sent shockwaves across the world

Alice Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, were killed in the attack, while eight other children and two adults were seriously wounded.

The 17-year-old responsible for those deaths and injuries was sentenced to life with a minimum of 52 years for the killings in January.

The horrors of the day have inevitably left an indelible mark on the town, but its residents have united together, determined not to let the atrocity define their home.

Sgt Gillespie said he had been heartened by that response.

“The community has come together mostly as a result of the actions of the parents of the victims who’ve been nothing short of inspirational,” he said.

“As a father, the thought of something like that happening to a child and then having to get up the next morning and try to proceed with your life is unfathomable.

“But the three sets of parents have not only done that… they’ve continued the legacy of their daughters’ names and they brought the community together.”

The community in Southport united together in the wake of the attack

All three officers were recognised at the Police Federation of England and Wales 2025 bravery awards for their actions on the day.

They said the attack had changed them.

“It affects you in ways that you don’t imagine,” PC Holden said.

“My hyper-vigilance increased 1,000% and I was wary of everyone in every situation.

“You start thinking worst case of every situation you deal with.”

PCSO Parry said it was “quite difficult” to return to normal life, adding that trying to do activities with his own child, and seeing others of a similar age to the victims, had been “hard for me for quite some time”.

“Obviously, it’s nothing compared to what the families involved had to go through and things, but it was a bit of a challenge.”

Sgt Gillespie said the events of 29 July last year had been “the toughest experience of my life, never mind my career”.

But, he added, compared with the families of the children killed and injured, “our pain and suffering is the tiniest drop in the largest ocean compared to theirs”.

  • Hulk Hogan’s Son Nick Pays Tribute to Late Father After His Death

Hulk Hogan’s Son Nick Pays Tribute to Late Father After His Death

Nick Hogan paid tribute to his dad, Hulk Hogan, who died last week at age 71, in an emotional post on Instagram.

Nick posted Saturday night that dad Hulk, who died Thursday of a reported cardiac arrest, was his “hero” and “best friend.”

“My dad was the most incredible person I’ve ever known and will always be my hero,” he wrote. “He was the most kind, loving and amazing father anybody could ask for. I feel so blessed to have had the greatest dad in the world. He was not only the best dad but also my mentor and my best friend. He always has been my best friend and I love him and miss him more than I could ever explain. I thanked him for everything he has ever done for me and told him how much I loved him and hugged him every chance I got. I spent a lot of time with him the past few years after moving back to Florida to be closer to him and I am so grateful for those memories. They are the best moments in my life.

“I would do anything to have him back but I know now that he will always be watching over me,” Nick continued. “I will always remember the lessons and advice he gave me and carry on in a way that I know would make him proud.”

In the post, which was accompanied by several photos of Nick with his dad, the younger Hogan thanked those who had reached out with messages of condolence and comfort.

“It truly means a lot,” he wrote. “I’m sorry to everyone I have not responded to yet. This has been overwhelming and extremely difficult. Hearing so many kind words and stories about my dad’s life, interactions and experiences with everyone has been incredible and comforting.”

He ended the message by addressing Hulk directly: “Thank you for being the best dad in the world and thank you for being my best friend. I love you so much Big Dog and I will miss you forever.”

Hogan’s death was confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by promoter Eric Bischoff, his partner in the recently launched Real America Freestyle amateur wrestling league, which landed a TV rights deal with Fox Nation this month. TMZ reported that medical personnel were sent to his home in Clearwater, Florida, with operators stating it involved a “cardiac arrest.”

The pro wrestler headlined WrestleMania eight times and won the World Wrestling Entertainment championship six times. He went on to appear in a slew of films and TV shows but also had his share of controversy, admitting to using steroids and later being ostracized by the WWE and removed from its Hall of Fame after he was heard making disparaging racial comments in a leaked sex video. In 2018, the WWE reinstated his Hall of Fame honor.

Many in Hollywood paid tribute to the late star last week, including Sylvester Stallone, who starred in Rocky III alongside Hogan: “I had the pleasure of meeting this brilliant personality and showman when he was 26 years old. He was absolutely wonderful and his amazing skill made Rocky three incredibly special. My heart breaks.”

  • Euro 2025: Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton bounce back from adversity to play starring roles

Euro 2025: Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton bounce back from adversity to play starring roles

Hampton, who has been playing her first major tournament as England’s first-choice goalkeeper, had big shoes to fill in Switzerland.

Earps – twice named as the best women’s goalkeeper in the world – had played significant roles in England’s victory at Euro 2022 and on the way to the 2023 World Cup final.

But Hampton, who looked likely to start at the Euros even before Earps’ retirement, has proved she deserves the number one shirt.

“At the start of the tournament did you think Hannah Hampton would be the star? Perhaps not. You wondered how she was going to do,” ex-Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha said.

“Look how well she has done on the biggest stage. To save those penalties – and these were really good saves. She backed herself 100%.

“An amazing moment to see her be that important to the team.”

Just months after England’s Euro triumph in 2022, Hampton was dropped from the squad.

Reports suggested it was because of her behaviour, and she had to wait until March 2023 for a recall, when Wiegman said Hampton had “sorted out personal issues”.

Speaking to BBC One following her shootout heroics in the 2025 final, Hampton said: “All I can really say is thank you to Sarina [Wiegman] for all the belief and faith that she’s had in me.

“She knew what I was capable of and she really put that in me to really go and showcase what I can do.”

Hampton, who helped Chelsea win a domestic treble this season, has shown exactly what she is capable of throughout the tournament.

After losing their opening game against France, Hampton was instrumental in helping England bounce back against the Netherlands – with a sublime defence-splitting pass starting the attack for England’s first goal and setting the tempo for a statement 4-0 performance.

Then, in their quarter-final against Sweden, she pulled off two brilliant saves in the shootout to help keep England’s title defence alive.

“The girls have run around for 120 minutes, so the least I can do is save a couple of pens here and there and help the team out in any way I can,” Hampton told BBC Radio 5 Live after the final.

She added on BBC One: “There’s still a lot more to come from me. For my first major tournament, to win it is not too bad.”
