  • ‘Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Snowfall’ actor was 60

‘Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Snowfall’ actor was 60

Alon Aboutboul, an Israeli actor best known for his roles in The Dark Knight and Rambo film franchises, has died. He was 60.

Aboutboul died on July 29, after collapsing at the Dor HaBonim Beach Nature Reserve, also known as HaBonim Beach, south of Haifa, Israel, the actor’s representative Mark Teitelbaum confirmed to USA TODAY. His cause of death was not disclosed.

“Alon was a brilliant actor, a true artist, an Israeli icon, but more importantly, he was a loving father of his four children, and a dear friend of mine and many others,” Teitelbaum said in a statement. “He possessed both a moral and spiritual clarity that is rare to find. As you might imagine, his family is in shock. He will be deeply missed. May his memory be a blessing.”

Born in Kiryat Ata, Israel, in May 1965, to a Jewish family from Egypt and Algeria, Aboutboul showed an early love for the performing arts. He cut his teeth as an aspiring thespian at the Thelma Yellin High School of Arts in Givatayim.

Aboutboul made his silver-screen debut at 15 with a role in the 1980 Hebrew-language film “Morning Star.” The actor found his breakthrough in American cinema when he landed the supporting role of Nissem in “Rambo III,” the second sequel in the action-hero franchise starring Sylvester Stallone.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Aboutboul landed a series of leading roles in Israeli films, such as “Planet Blue” (1995), “Nina’s Tragedies” (2003), “Melanoma My Love” (2006) and “Wild Dogs” (2007).

In the early 2010s, Aboutboul joined the DC universe with a role in 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” playing Dr. Leonid Pavel in the finale of Christopher Nolan’s Batman series starring Christian Bale.

Miki Zohar, Israel’s Minister of Culture and Sports, paid tribute to Aboutboul’s entertainment legacy in a July 29 X post, sharing that he was “deeply saddened” by the actor’s death: “He portrayed a wide range of characters, bringing depth and emotion to them, leaving a profound mark on Israeli culture.”

“Last night, I watched an interview with him where he spoke about filming a movie he recently participated in, and the passion for his craft that radiated from him was evident even after so many years in the industry,” Zohar wrote.

Aboutboul is survived by his wife, director Shir Bilya, and their four children.

One of Aboutboul’s other notable roles included Avi Drexler on the FX psychological drama “Snowfall.”

Aboutboul’s co-star Amin Joseph, who played Jerome Saint, paid tribute to the late actor in a July 29 Instagram post, which featured a series of throwback photos of Aboutboul.

“Rest in peace to the plug. Rest in power, Alon Aboutboul,” Joseph wrote. “Your work as Abi Drexler on Snowfall left a lasting impression — sharp, layered, unforgettable. You brought truth to every frame. Grateful we shared the screen.”

Prince William stopped face off between Kate, Meghan Markle

Prince William ensured there was no friction between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle during one of their joint public appearances.

The Prince of Wales, who was joined by his brother, Princes Harry, and their respective wives at the 100 year tribute to the Royal Air Force, helps the ladies stay away from chaos.

As Kate and Meghan stood in the Westminster Abbey before meeting the Dean of Westminster, William stepped in between the two.

Body language expert Judi James told The Mail : “Superficially, and with the benefit of hindsight, now that we know about the tricky relationship between Meghan and Kate, this looks very much like a devoted and protective husband strategically and very pointedly stepping between his wife and her nemesis in the form of a human shield.

Prince William stopped face off between Kate, Meghan Markle

“William’s body language shows he is clearly aware that Harry and Meghan have honed into position behind him and he immediately ducks his head to move to stand next to his wife, even sucking his lips inward in what is often a signal of regret.”

Judi said: “There is a spatial gap between William and Meghan that doesn’t really show at this angle. When the royals greet their hosts at services like this, there is something of a royal queue with gaps that can turn into a log jam if a royal keeps chatting, as Kate often can.

“Meghan was new to the royal Firm and William’s body language to this point had shown him being friendly and welcoming. This movement and change of position could be the kind of adjustment you make to the position of a group at a party when someone new comes to join in,” he noted.

  • Leaker shares clearest look yet at all the iPhone 17 dummy units

Leaker shares clearest look yet at all the iPhone 17 dummy units

For the past few weeks, there have been leaks left and right about the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup, particularly when it comes to color options for the Pro models.

Now, leaker Sonny Dickson has shared what may be our clearest look yet at the full lineup.

Bit by bit, the iPhone 17 color options have been coming into focus. From camera ring leaks to Macworld’s recent reporting on Pantone shades, we were starting to build a pretty clear picture of what to expect.

Now, leaker Sonny Dickson is out with an image that reportedly shows the full iPhone 17 lineup, including most, if not all, of the expected color variants:

The photo shows four previously rumored Pro colors: black, white, navy blue, and orange. But for the first time, we’re getting a sense of what those shades might actually look like on the devices.

Interestingly, both the navy blue and orange options look noticeably more saturated than the typically muted tones Apple uses for its Pro models (and very reminiscent of Tim Cook’s Auburn University team colors).

That could be welcome news for users who’ve been hoping for bolder colors in the Pro line, assuming the tones in the image are accurate.

As for the iPhone 17 Air, the image shows four colors: black, white, light blue, and what looks like a light gold finish. The regular iPhone 17 models are shown in black, white, an even lighter blue, and light pink.

Sonny Dickson’s track record with leaks is solid, so for better or worse, it might be time to start thinking about which color you’ll go for come September.

  • Sarah Jessica Parker in possible conflict of interest over Booker longlisted author | Booker prize

Sarah Jessica Parker in possible conflict of interest over Booker longlisted author | Booker prize

An apparent conflict of interest has emerged over the Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker’s judging of this year’s Booker prize.

A production company run by the actor is reportedly in the process of developing a book written by Claire Adam, whose second novel, Love Forms, appears on this year’s longlist, announced on Tuesday.

Adam’s debut novel, Golden Child, was published in the US in 2019 by SJP for Hogarth, the Penguin imprint for which Parker served as editorial director. It is being developed as a film by Parker’s company Pretty Matches Productions and MA Productions.

“It is not uncommon for judges to have a connection to authors whose work has been submitted, so all judges have to declare any conflicts of interest at the outset,” said Gaby Wood, chief executive of the Booker Prize Foundation.

“As Sarah Jessica Parker published Claire Adam’s first novel, Golden Child, under her US imprint SJP for Hogarth, she declared the potential conflict to ensure transparency and only gave her view on the book after the other judges had shared theirs. No book can go through if it is supported by one judge alone, and Love Forms has earned its place on the Booker prize 2025 longlist through the active support of other judges on the panel.”

In an interview with the the Irish Times published in June, Adam said that the film option “was bought by a small production company in LA (MA Productions), and we’re all so thrilled that SJP’s Pretty Matches Productions is on board as well. Film stuff moves slowly, there are a zillion obstacles, and her supporting the project is fantastic.”

Pretty Matches Productions, founded in 2005, is also behind the Sex and the City sequel And Just Like That … and the HBO series Divorce, which Parker executive produced and starred in.

In an interview with the Times in June, Adam said that Parker “reads loads and so it was really fun to hang out with her. She’s so lovely and sincere. She read the book cover to cover and got up at 5am to travel to meet me.” Golden Child is published in the UK by Faber, and in 2019 won the Desmond Elliott prize.

In June 2023, Parker launched SJP Lit, in partnership with the independent publisher Zando, which has published titles including These Days by Lucy Caldwell and The Story of the Forest by Linda Grant. Parker also shares book recommendations on her Instagram account.

Parker was announced as a judge of this year’s Booker prize in December, with Wood saying at the time that she had “enjoyed sharing book recommendations with Sarah Jessica, who has passionately supported contemporary fiction for many years”.

The 2025 judging panel is chaired by Roddy Doyle, and Parker’s co-judges are Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀, Kiley Reid and Chris Power.

Adam was named as one of 13 longlisted authors, which include the former winner Kiran Desai, Tash Aw and David Szalay. The shortlist will be revealed on 23 September, with the winner announced on 10 November.

Samoa’s football federation (SFA) says they have taken measures to ensure players and officials participating in the upcoming Oceania Football Conferderation (OFC) 2025 Under-16 Women’s Championship is not affected by the recent dengue fever outbreak in the the country.

A statement from SFA said officials have worked with hotels that will house teams to assess their preparedness for safeguarding guests.

“In light of the recent dengue fever outbreak in Samoa, we proactively visited each hotel where our team will be staying over the weekend to assess their preparedness for safeguarding guests against this health concern,” it stated on Monday.

“We were pleased to discover that the hotels have implemented several comprehensive measures.

“They have already conducted thorough spraying to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds, each room is equipped with repellent, ensuring guests have easy access to protection while they relax.

“Hand sanitisers will be readily available throughout the premises, promoting good hygiene practices and the hotels are committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment, offering peace of mind to everyone staying with them.

“These proactive steps reflect a strong commitment to guest safety and well-being during our visit.”

The OFC Under-16 tournament kicks off in Apia on Friday, with eight teams competing. They include Fiji, American Samoa, Samoa, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Solomon Islands and Tonga.

The OFC is expected to update teams on Wednesday about the risks and status.

Local media Taumua Online reported on Tuesday that schools have closed this week as close to 16,000 dengue fever cases have been recorded so far.

The online website said a fumigation operation resumed this week covering all Samoa schools along with other high-risk areas as part of a nationwide dengue response.

This is in addition to a national clean-up campaign last Saturday, mobilising villages and communities to clean their surroundings and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds as part of the nationwide dengue response.

Deputy Director of the Pediatric Ward at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole (TTM) hospital Ulugia Dr Tito Kamu confirmed cases continue to rise and the most vulnerable age group is from 1 to 15 years old, the outlet reported.

He said that the hospital is managing and they have to pull-in public health doctors and call-in senior doctors on call to assist.

UK gets first female Astronomer Royal in 350 years

Prof Michele Docherty showed courage and talent to become Astronomer Royal

Astronomer Prof Michele Dougherty did not study science in secondary school – but was instead inspired to learn more about space after using her father’s telescope.

Now she is the first woman to be appointed the UK’s Astronomer Royal in the post’s 350-year history, and is part of the team sending probes to Jupiter’s icy moons.

She told BBC News she hoped her appointment on Wednesday as the official adviser to King Charles III on astronomical matters would inspire more women and girls to study science.

The new Astronomer Royal added that she also wanted to use her new role to “open people’s eyes” to the wonders of space.

“I want to engage with the public, excite them about what we do in astronomy, but also make it clear how important what we do is to the UK economy,” Prof Dougherty said.

Prof Docherty is involved in one of the most exciting space missions to date: a European Space Agency probe to the icy moons of Jupiter to assess whether they have the potential to support life.

“It would be surprising if there wasn’t life in our solar system,” she said laughing, with the unbridled enthusiasm she is known for.

Her journey to Jupiter began when she was ten at the age of ten and saw the planet through a telescope she, her sister and her father built.

“That was when I got my first view of Jupiter and four large moons, never thinking I’d end up sending instruments on a spacecraft there,” she said.

“I’m having to pinch myself at the thought of it and I’m having to pinch myself at the fact that I’m now Astronomer Royal!”

Prof Dougherty’s achievement is all the more remarkable as she did not study science at secondary school in South Africa where she grew up.

“I had a choice between schools. One of them taught science, but none of my friends were going to it,” she said. “So as a young 13 year-old, I thought, I want to go with my friends.”

But the young Prof Dougherty was so good at maths that she was admitted to a science course at university.

“The first couple of years were hard. It was like learning a new language,” she said.

But she soon caught up and came to the UK to become one of the country’s leading space scientists, showing tremendous courage as well as talent.

“I said yes to things I didn’t know how to do, and I learned as I went,” she told me.

The role of Astronomer Royal dates back to the creation of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675. John Flamsteed from Derby was the first person to fill the role. The job back then was mostly to advise the king on using the stars to improve navigation at sea.

The observatory’s senior curator, Dr Louise Devoy, explained that the job evolved over the years, to become one of the most important scientific voices in the country.

“By the 1800s the Astronomer Royal started to be called upon to act as a government advisor, so that may be to advise on the railways or bridges or telegraphy, a whole range of topics beyond astronomy,” she said.

“If we fast forward to the 20th Century, it is more about developing international collaborations, which is why you have British astronomers working in telescopes in Chile, the Canary Islands and even the James Webb Space Telescope.”

Over three and a half centuries,15 men have held the post of the most senior astronomer for all of the UK. But at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, Prof Catherine Heyman has held an equivalent post as Astronomer Royal for Scotland since 2021.

She was delighted to hear of Prof Dougherty’s appointment.

“For the last 350 years the title of Astronomer Royal has been held by a white male astronomer, and that kind of reflected what the astronomical community has looked like for the last few centuries. But things are changing,” she said.

“Science is becoming more diverse, which it needs to be if we want to answer these big questions, and I’m absolutely delighted now that the two Astronomers Royal across the UK are female, reflecting the fact that science is for everyone.”

Prof Dougherty herself does not want to make a big deal of the fact that she is the first woman to hold the UK-wide post, but she hopes it will inspire others to follow in her footsteps.

“I think it is important. I think when young children in particular see someone that looks like them doing a job they think they would never get an opportunity to do, it changes their mindset a little,” she told BBC News.

Prof Dougherty experienced this when she was head of the physics department at Imperial College between 2018 and 2024. During that time, the percentage of first year female undergraduates who came to Imperial increased from about 19% to 25%.

“Not a huge change,” she said, “but there was a positive change. And I think it’s because students saw that I was in a role that they might aspire to in the future”.

Mayi Re’ director talks second instalment

Fan-favourite director Meesum Naqvi made an appearance in an episode of YouTube series, Gup Shup with FUCHSIA Magazine, where he answered fan questions such as whether Mayi Ri will have a second season and how Parwarish’s script was developed.

“When we created Mayi Ri, beautiful things like Aina and Samar happened,” Naqvi said. “They gathered an insane fan following.” After Mayi Ri, the production house wanted Naqvi to cast Aina Asif and Samar Jafri together again.

Mayi Ri delved into the life of a 15-year-old schoolgirl who is compelled to marry her underage cousin. The show unravelled the devastating consequences of child marriages, which can shatter innocent childhoods forever. On the other hand, Parwarish touches upon the challenges of parenthood and turns the spotlight on the younger generation’s ache for control and independence.

Both shows have captivated viewers with their layered scripts and focus on meaningful societal issues.

Naqvi shared that he did not want to make Mayi Ri 2. “What would even be the plot of it, that the couple does a halala and is back together?” he asked. “That would not have made sense.”

“I made the show against child marriage, and I cannot have negated that just because people wanted the two back together. There will be no Mayi Ri 2 because I have told a complete story,” clarified the director.

Naqvi still wanted to make something with the two of them together, and Parwarish was created.

The director was not fully on board with Parwarish at the start. “Two years after Mayi Ri, I didn’t have any ongoing projects. Someone in the production house asked, ‘Why not Parwarish?’ The script wasn’t complete at the time so I was a bit hesitant. The people at the production encouraged me to give it a go. Eventually, I gave it a read and loved it!”

Regarding the two main leads, Aina had a bit of scheduling issues but made it work. For Samar’s background, the director shared, “We were always sure that Samar would play the character of Wali. The character was designed keeping him in mind, from his music background to his personality traits.”

Calling upon repetitive storytelling, the director revealed, “We initially considered turning Nooray Zeeshan into one of the heroines and creating a proper love triangle. I didn’t do it because I did not want to show cousin marriages on screen. We had seen enough of this in Mayi Ri.”

Hot blob beneath Appalachians formed when Greenland split from North America — and it’s heading to New York

A giant blob of abnormally hot rock beneath the Appalachian Mountains formed when Greenland separated from North America around 80 million years ago, new research suggests.

Scientists previously thought that this hot zone, known as the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, was left over after North America broke away from Africa 180 million years ago, but this theory does not stand up to new scrutiny, according to the study, published Wednesday (July 30) in the journal Geology.
