Sensory neurons inside the tooth send pain signals to the brain, as is well-established. A new study reveals greater functionality; here, these neurons are multitaskers that also trigger a jaw-opening reflex that almost instantaneously prevents damage and further injury to teeth.

The reflex that pops open the lower jaw was a widely known craniofacial reflex, but until this study was published the cellular origins of this phenomenon were not known.

With the study, University of Michigan researchers in sensory neuroscience, dentistry and mechanical engineering found the origin using special live imaging, behaviour-tracking tools and mice molars to uncover the neurons’ additional role of monitoring the inner tooth and outer enamel.

The discovery and understanding of this additional role shows how important healthy, active nerves are for preserving teeth.

“We suspected there was a more fundamental role for tooth nerves,” says Joshua Emrick, senior author of the study and assistant professor at the U-M School of Dentistry in a research note. “When we consider regenerating a tooth pulp, we need to bring back the nerves.”

The science team looked at how nerve cells reacted to stimulation of the molar teeth of mice in real time. These experiments have revealed a newly defined, protective role for intradental High-Threshhold Mechanoreceptors (HTMR), which are highly specialized sensory neurons that respond to tooth damage. These HTMRs detect dangerous threats and send the message rapidly to the brain for instantaneous action.

“Our study challenges the prior assumption that nerves inside the tooth primarily function to elicit pain and force us straight to the dentist for help,” Emrick adds. “If you’ve ever accidentally bitten down on your fork, you’ve probably experienced a startling jolt, but also stopped short of fracturing your teeth. You may thank these intradental HTMRs for that.”

The reflex is really about self-preservation

Continuing with the importance of the finding, Emrick continues: “We think protection of the teeth through this jaw-opening reflex is highly conserved among mammals that haven’t developed the ability to replace teeth—like humans or in the molar teeth of mice…Our work reports an ability to use these neurons to also elicit pain which will open up possibilities for developing new methods for relieving toothache at the dentist’s office.”

To break it down further, the study, shows that when enamel or dentin is damaged, the neurons fire a response. Follow-up experiments determined what happened after the HTMRs were activated. As previously known, the research group identified that they trigger acute pain, yet surprisingly they also witnessed a rapid jaw-opening reflex within 5 to 15 milliseconds of the activation.

HTMRs may also protect other oral and body structures from damage, since sensory neurons are essential in protecting and maintaining our tissues throughout life.

The findings appear in the journal Cell Reports, titled “Intradental mechano-nociceptors serve as sentinels that prevent tooth damage.”

  • Deadmau5 in Fortnite? Full Collab and Prices

Deadmau5 in Fortnite? Full Collab and Prices

Music is a core part of Fortnite culture. After busting it down at virtual concerts and one-pumping enemies as Sabrina Carpenter, electronic music fans can experience a new era with a Fortnite x Deadmau5 collab coming soon. Let’s recap everything to know about the drop, including its release date, contents, cost and more.

On July 31 2025, musician and DJ Joel “Deadmau5” Zimmerman made a cryptic X.com post captioned “Seeya soon Fortnite.” The reveal included an image of Deadmau5′ iconic mouse-helmet outfit on a club dance floor, with various Fortnite characters busting a move nearby. Fortnite soon officially confirmed this collaboration by reposting it, leading to widespread hype among fans.

According to Deadmau5′ original post, the Fortnite x Deadmau5 collab will go live on Tuesday, August 5 2025.

Exact release time and date may vary depending on server region and the player’s location. In addition, it’s unclear how long the Fortnite x Deadmau5 drop will stay in the shop. The partnership arrives shortly before Fortnite Season 4 launches on Thursday, August 7.

Fortnite has not officially revealed the items in the Deadmau5 collab, but several leaks have emerged purporting to show its contents. According to Fortnite aficionado and Epic Games partner @ShiinaBR and fellow leaker @Loolo_WRLD, the drop allegedly includes:

If the leaked information is correct, players can purchase items from the Fortnite x Deadmau5 drop individually or as a full bundle. Costs will vary depending on that decision. Generally, buying a full bundle costs more than a single item, but has better overall value. Here’s a quick recap of the set’s prices:

The Fortnite x Deadmau5 collab items will be available exclusively through the in-game Item Shop. Players will need V-Bucks, the game’s premium currency, to purchase them. Currently, 1,000 V-Bucks cost 8.99 USD from the Epic Games shop.

Once players purchase them, the Deadmau5 items will immediately appear in their cosmetics locker, ready to equip and use.

Every Fortnite skin bundle drop usually sparks a brief player count spike, since users rush to the game so they can test and try on each cosmetic. This sends small ripple effects into competitive queue, resulting in quicker queue times and more active lobbies.

All that being said, Fortnite’s skins usually do not provide any in-game competitive advantages. Players still have to rely on their tried-and-true trickshots and speed-building strategies to succeed.

Mariah Carey Shines in Prada Platforms & Zanotti Boots in Brighton

Mariah Carey brought full-stage sparkle to Brighton Pride on Saturday night, grounding each of her three outfit changes in a different high-shine shoe. From sculptural platforms to metallic knee-highs, the lineup hit familiar notes — glamour, nostalgia, precision — all styled for impact.

She opened in black satin Prada platforms with an open toe and thick block heel, trimmed in silver crystal studs. A matching ankle strap ran over sheer glitter tights, peeking out beneath a classic black dress cut at the mid-calf and lined with rhinestones at the neckline. It was a clean look by Carey standards, but no less maximal in intent.

Her next look took a harder turn into disco-pop: silver knee-high boots by Giuseppe Zanotti with a lightly slouched shaft and pointed toe. They were paired with a zip-front multicolor dress covered in micro-crystals, keeping the shine uniform from shoulder to heel.

Later in the set, Carey swapped silver for gold — same boots, same fit — this time styled with a metallic mini dress and stacked diamond cuffs. The boots, also from Zanotti’s Hattie line, are known for their glove-like fit and reflective finish, a stage-ready silhouette that doesn’t need embellishment to read dramatic.

Other performers have leaned into the same strategy this summer. Jennifer Lopez wore rhinestone and pearl-covered thigh-highs in Spain during her “Up All Night” tour, while Paris Hilton closed out Pride Month last June in silver Stuart Weitzman stilettos. Carey’s pairs — cleaner in construction but no less theatrical — offered a more classic version of the trend.

  • Israeli forces kill at least 27 at food site while minister’s al-Aqsa visit causes outrage | Israel-Gaza war

Israeli forces kill at least 27 at food site while minister’s al-Aqsa visit causes outrage | Israel-Gaza war

At least 27 people were killed by Israeli forces while trying to get food and six others died from starvation or malnutrition in Gaza on Sunday, Palestinian officials said, amid a regional outcry over an Israeli minister’s visit to Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site.

Witnesses said Israeli forces fired on hungry crowds who were attempting to get food aid from a distribution site run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in the south of the territory, with some describing the fire as indiscriminate.

“I couldn’t stop and help because of the bullets,” Yousef Abed told the Associated Press after seeing at least three people bleeding on the ground as Israeli forces opened fire.

Sunday’s killings were the latest in a string of deadly shootings targeting hungry people. At least 1,400 people have been killed while seeking aid since 27 May, most of whom were killed near GHF sites, while others were killed along the routes of aid convoys, the UN said on Friday. The GHF says it only uses pepper spray or fires warning shots to control crowds.

In total, 119 people were killed in Gaza by Israeli shootings and strikes over the last 24 hours, including those seeking aid, the Gaza health ministry said.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said the Israeli military targeted its headquarters in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on Sunday, killing one staffer and wounding three more. Video taken by an employee showed the headquarters in flames after the strike, which had destroyed much of the building.

A separate Israeli strike hit a school in Khan Younis that displaced people had been using as shelter, killing at least two people.

Gaza’s population is growing increasingly desperate as the territory sinks further into famine, which experts say is a product of Israel’s continued blockade of aid. Israel has vehemently denied there is a starvation crisis in Gaza and announced expanded aid measures last week, but humanitarians say Israel is still severely restricting the entry of aid.

Chart of deaths while seeking aid

Six people have died of starvation or malnutrition in the past 24 hours, health officials said, bringing the total number who have died from hunger to 175, 93 of whom were children. The pace of starvation deaths surged in July with more people dying from hunger than in the previous 20 months combined.

Humanitarians say a far greater amount of aid needs to enter Gaza to help stabilise the starvation emergency.

“We need the sustainable entry of humanitarian aid to flood Gaza with aid for a relatively long period of time. Patients and hospitals need more food than usual to contribute to their recovery,” said Hisham Mhanna, a spokesperson for the ICRC in Gaza.

He said the emergency compounded Gaza’s existing crises, which include a devastated healthcare system and the spread of disease. Faced with starvation and lack of humanitarian supplies, aid groups are struggling to help the population of Gaza.

In total, at least 60,839 people have been killed in Gaza during Israel’s current military operations, launched after the Hamas-led attack in Israel on 7 October 2023 which killed about 1,200 people.

While Israeli strikes continued in Gaza, Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, led prayers at al-Aqsa mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, provoking outrage among regional powers. Ben-Gvir was among a group of about 1,250 people who prayed at the compound on Sunday under the protection of the Israeli military.

The compound, which Jews call the Temple Mount, is a highly revered site – the holiest in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam. The site is under Jordanian custodianship; under a decades-old agreement, Jews are allowed to visit but not pray there.

    Al-Aqsa compound map

Jordan condemned the visit, which it described as “an unacceptable provocation”. Its foreign ministry said it “affirmed the kingdom’s absolute rejection and strong condemnation of the continued unacceptable incursions by the extremist minister Ben-Gvir”.

Ben-Gvir’s visit was in honour of Tisha B’Av, when Jews mourn the destruction of two Jewish temples, and was the first time that an Israeli minister had publicly prayed at the site.

The compound has been the scene of clashes in the past, with Israeli police raiding the mosque in 2023 after Palestinians occupied it in response to reports that Jews were planning a religious ceremony there.

Ben-Gvir called for the annexation of Gaza and for Palestinians to leave the territory while at al-Aqsa on Sunday. He said in a post on X: “A message must be sent: to ensure that we conquer all of the Gaza Strip, declare sovereignty …. This is the only way that we will return the hostages and win the war.”

Benjamin Netanyahu put out a statement after the visit saying the policy governing the compound “has not changed and will not change”.

The controversy came as the Israeli public was reeling from the release of two videos over the weekend showing emaciated hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza, which triggered protests on Saturday.

Netanyahu on Sunday requested the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide food and medical aid to the hostages in Gaza.

Hamas responded that it was ready to provide Red Cross aid to the hostages if Israel halted “all forms of air traffic” during the delivery of packages.

The occupied West Bank was also gripped by demonstrations on Sunday, with thousands protesting against the war in Gaza and the detention of Palestinians in Israeli prisons. Protesters carried photos of Palestinians killed or detained by Israel, as well as photos of starving children in Gaza.

More than 10,800 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisoners. Rights groups have documented widespread torture of Palestinians by Israeli prison guards and soldiers, including sexual abuse, food deprivation and physical abuse.

Reconstructions reveal faces of Neolithic sisters buried 6,000 years ago

More than 6,000 years ago, in the Krumlov Forest of South Moravia in the Czech Republic, two sisters endured a hard life in an ancient mining settlement. Now, thanks to advanced forensic methods and archaeological research, their incredibly lifelike faces have been uncovered in new 3D reconstructions. These reconstructions give us not just a glimpse into their physical appearance but also into a society that may have exploited its most vulnerable members.

The remains were first discovered over 15 years ago during excavations at a Neolithic chert (flint) mine—specifically, Pit 4, one of hundreds discovered in the area, which is known for prehistoric mining activity from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age. The remains included two adult females buried one atop the other, with the older woman hugging a newborn baby on her chest. Next to them was a partially complete skeleton of a small dog. The females were likely sisters and were interred in the shaft in which they had labored, according to a paper published in Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences.

Dr. Martin Oliva, an archaeologist with the Moravian Museum and a co-author of the study, told Live Science that the location of the women’s graves within the mine suggests that the women likely labored there. The mine may have also had spiritual meaning, serving as a sacred site related to ancestral or sacrificial rituals, the researchers suggest.

Detailed analysis, involving radiocarbon dating, genetic analysis, isotopic analysis, and bone study, paints a grim picture of physical suffering and exploitation. Both women, estimated to have been around 30 to 40 years old, were around 1.48 and 1.46 meters (approximately 4.8 feet) tall and bore signs of heavy labor. The bones exhibited worn vertebrae, early arthritis, herniated discs, and partially healed fractures—specifically, one on the older sister’s forearm—indicating that they continued to work despite severe trauma.

Interestingly, isotopic analysis of nitrogen and carbon levels indicated that although the sisters had grown up malnourished and ill, in adulthood, they had consumed a high-meat diet. This was unusual for European Neolithic populations, which may have been due to better access to wild game in the densely forested region or a nutritional strategy to fuel their hard labor.

DNA testing confirmed the sibling relationship and even determined some physical features. The younger sister likely had dark hair and green or hazel eyes, while the older may have had blue eyes and blonde hair. These features were utilized for the lifelike facial reconstructions—on display today at the Moravian Museum in Brno—created using plaster, silicone, prosthetic eyes, and implanted hair. The skulls were in a good state and allowed for detailed facial modeling.

The reconstructions also depict clothing derived from Neolithic-era archaeological textile finds, made entirely of plant fibers like flax and nettles. The older woman wears a simple blouse and plant-fiber wrap, and a hairnet. The younger one wears a linen blouse with braided fabric strips woven through her hair.

But questions remain. The infant that was buried was genetically not related to either woman, and the positioning of the dog’s remains adds another question mark to the burial. Scientists have not ruled out that the women and infant could have been victims of ritual sacrifice or symbolic appeasement to the earth, as mining shafts could have had spiritual significance to Neolithic peoples.

In the broader social context, the authors point to a possible reorganization of work in the Neolithic period. The article contends that as soon as hierarchical societies began to emerge, “the hardest labour may no longer have been done by the strongest, but by those who could most easily be forced to do it.” This is a hint that even in early agricultural societies, labor might have been distributed in unequal forms, possibly on the basis of gender, age, or social status.

  • ‘Clash of the Tens!’ The first Live Show ends a week of mayhem – BBNaija

‘Clash of the Tens!’ The first Live Show ends a week of mayhem – BBNaija

    “How far?”

That’s how Ebuka Obi-Uchendu kicked off Big Brother Naija Season 10’s very first Live Show, and honestly, it couldn’t be more fitting. After a week of kitchen chaos (including Koyin’s first teary meltdown), back-to-back breakdowns (Mensan’s now-iconic crash-out turned joy session?), power tussles (Jason Jae vs. Rooboy scream-fest), and a pool party that served more steam than splash, this season is already clocking a certified 10/10 on the mayhem scale.

Coming in live from Lagos, Nigeria, the show opened with big energy and even bigger shade. Ebuka, draped in a burgundy velvet agbada vest, embroidered with gold emblems and dripping in coral beads, gave the 29 housemates their flowers for delivering a blockbuster first week. No zero, no minus! After all, it hasn’t even been a full week since these housemates swore on big vibes and ‘max vawulense’ during last weekend’s double launch spectacle.

But true to his table-shaking form, he didn’t stop at hype. “Denari, happy birthday man,” he smiled warmly, before turning to Mide with a teasing jab: “She looked bored at the pool party.”

That’s vintage Ebuka: mix the roses with a few thorns and watch tension bloom. Denari smiled from ear-to ear as the host added flair to an already festive day, following a round of housemate-led birthday cheer. Unfortunately, the goodwill didn’t buy him immunity. The nominations held steady. And for Mide, and the 10/10 house at large, the spicy swipe about disappearing acts might give her something to ponder on in the coming week.

The Live Show looked at the week that set the tone for a 10/10 experience, and this is what arose from the scorching blaze:

    Heavy is the crown

One week in, and the race for dominance has already begun. The housemates wasted no time diving into the first Head of House challenge, where Jason Jae snapped up the interim crown. As Ebuka quipped, “So quick, they named him twice.” But with BBNaija, nothing stays settled for long.

Jason was forced to defend his title just a day later during the Head of House Challenger. He held on, with a little sweat, a lot of nerves, and traces of competitive energy. Not everyone’s keen on that seat of power, though. When Ebuka asked Kuture why he seemed hesitant to pursue HoH, the answer went viral: “It is easier to control animals than humans.” Yikes.

Tracy chimed in with a more measured take: “It’s a lot of responsibility”, and she’s not wrong. In this house, leadership paints a target on your back. Even Rooboy wasn’t having it earlier in the week. Following his explosive confrontation with Jason Jae, he told Big Brother in the Diary Room that the reigning Head of House needed to step up and run a secure government.  “A leader should lead,” he said, making it clear Jason Jae was on his own, before the two reconciled.

    From Wagers to woes

And the first Wager Task Presentation? A full-blown flop. After a chaotic week of kitchen bans (it took Kaybobo days to live down his plate embargo), side-eyes, and emotional whirlwinds, the housemates failed to deliver anything resembling teamwork. Ebuka didn’t miss a beat: Did their 10/10 drama minus one – focus on working together? Ouch.

The season’s first run of Diary Room sessions, meanwhile, offered everything we expected and more. We got some nerves, name drops, and wild theories. Ebuka rolled the tape and then returned with an even spicier question: Is there a fake housemate in the house? Imisi, clearly stunned by this bomb, stuttered her way around and eventually guessed that, if there were ever an industry plant in the house, it would be Doris. Sounds like a fresh wave of paranoia is officially on the air.

    ‘Clash of the Tens’

Then came the look back at the first pool party, where bodies, beats, and beefs set a heated tone above the blue waters.

And, while some housemates went full throttle during the first week, others quietly vanished into the background. Bright Morgan brushed it off with, “I’m always on standby,” while Joanna insisted it was just a vibe thing, not intimidation, that would cause some housemates to slip under the radar.

But on this show, absence is an act. Ebuka took the hint and threw in a classic twist. One by one, he called all housemates to stand – lights pulsing, music building, the room on edge. Nominations? Fake. Evictions? Not yet. But the tension? All too real.

The show closed with Ebuka’s final reminder: “This week was fun, but next week, the real game begins”. That is, the next nominations will be real, and so will the evictions. And, he continued, votes are the only way to keep one’s favourite housemate in the house.

If this first week was a taste of what’s coming, Season 10 might just go down as BBNaija’s most iconic chapter yet. There is one crown, one mysterious red telephone, and one house where the bag refuses to sit still. The game is on!
