  • Germany in commanding form: all youth team gold medals head to the nation in Le Mans (FRA)

The FEI Dressage European Championship for Children, Juniors and Ponies in Le Mans (FRA) was dominated by Germany, who took team gold in all three age categories. In addition, German athletes secured individual gold in both the Children and Junior divisions. The only exception to their clean sweep came in the Pony Freestyle, where Denmark’s Victoria Bang Zindorff danced her way to gold with a charismatic performance.

    Children: German precision shines bright

Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands filled the podium in the Children’s Championship. While the Preliminary test served merely as an opening qualifier with no bearing on the medals, it did set the tone for what was to come. Dutch rider Bo Leijten and her chestnut mare Gentle van Wittenstein topped this initial test, with Lynn Sophie Soddemann (GER) on Fürst Schwarzenberg MT and Laura Kohoutek (GER) on Shakeela FRH close behind.

Germany stamped their authority on the Team Competition, winning gold with an astonishing margin of over 18 percentage points. Laura Kohoutek posted the top score, Lilly Kasselmann and Vodka Soda placed third, Marielen Theresa Osterhoff and Davina were fourth, and Lynn Sophie Soddemann’s sixth place served as the drop score.

Chef d’Equipe Cornelia Albrecht (GER) praised the squad’s consistency and harmony. “The Children girls delivered incredibly consistent performances and were very evenly matched. They have already shown at a young age that they are able to develop horses well,” she explained. “Their horses were presented in the classical German style, which we are very proud of. Laura has a very young mare, and she showed her with great harmony and lightness. Lilly is our youngest rider, and rode her big horse Vodka Soda with impressive routine and effective aids. Marielen’s elegant horse has good movement and she shows a lot of feeling. Lynn was part of the team last year and once again delivered a harmonious test.”

Belgium surprised with silver, though the result aligns with the growing momentum of Belgian Dressage at senior level. Elise van Os and Reliv van het Amaryllishof led the charge with a strong performance that landed them second individually in the team test. The Netherlands, defending champions from last year’s Children Championship, settled for bronze this time. Dutch team trainer Loes Corsel noted that nerves, inexperience and a bit of bad luck played a role in a less fluent showing this year.

The Individual Final saw 13-year-old Laura Kohoutek (GER) and her only seven-year-old mare Shakeela FRH claim gold with a huge score of 83.219%. Initially selected as a reserve, Kohoutek was called up last minute following a withdrawal.

“I’m so proud of how she managed these days,” she said of her mare. “She’s only seven, so I can hardly believe we actually won here.”

Silver went to Bo Leijten (NED) and Gentle van Wittenstein V, who posted 80.920%. “I’m very happy,” said Leijten. “My main plan was just to enjoy the test, regardless of the result. But winning a European medal is a dream come true. I’m very proud of my horse, she gave a super feeling.”

Lilly Kasselmann (GER) took bronze with Vodka Soda after scoring 80.394%. “At first I was a little bit nervous, but that faded away when my horse felt so good in the warm-up and during the test,” she said. All three medallists in the Individual Competition broke the 80% barrier, showing just how good their riding was.

Ponies: Denmark breaks the German streak in the Freestyle

In one of the tightest team competitions of the Championship in Le Mans, Germany edged out the Netherlands for gold by just over two percentage points. All three top German combinations, Maya Wächter, Leni-Sophie Gosmann and Madlin Tillman, scored well above 73% and finished inside the top five. The Dutch squad delivered consistent performances as well, with Isabella Karajkovic, Fabiënne Raijmakers and sisters Esmae Niessen and Feline Niessen and placing from fifth to eighth. Denmark’s Victoria Bang Zindorff placed second in the team test, helping secure team bronze for her country.

In the Individual Test, it was Germany’s Maya Wächter who led from start to finish, scoring 74.784% with her pony Nasdaq FH. Participating in her first and final Pony Europeans, because she turns 16 years old this year, Wächter made the most of her opportunity.

“He gives me a lot of confidence and I can really ride him. He fights for you during the test,” she said of Nasdaq. “I’m so happy to have achieved this in my last year on ponies.”

Silver went to teammate Leni-Sophie Gosmann and Diamantini EA WE on 73.162%, narrowly ahead of Denmark’s Victoria Bang Zindorff and Del Classico who posted 73.135% to earn bronze.

The Freestyle brought a reshuffling of the podium and a break in Germany’s gold-medal streak. Riding to fresh and fun Harry Styles-themed music, Victoria Bang Zindorff claimed Freestyle gold for Denmark with a score of 77.560%. The chestnut stallion Del Classico delivered fluent transitions and a very original floorplan with a high degree of difficulty.

Germany still featured strongly: Maya Wächter earned silver with 76.605% and Gosmann claimed her second bronze of the Championship with 76.475%. Just under one point separated the entire podium, underscoring the level of competition.

Juniors: golden sweep for Germany, Dutch athletes also shine

Germany was untouchable in the Junior division, taking gold in all three categories with a team that blended depth, experience and feel. Maria Teresa Pohl, Ava Osing, Julie Sofie Schmitz-Heinen and Viktoria von Braunmühl all delivered scores above 70% in the team test.

Chef d’Equipe Cornelia Albrecht praised their calmness and riding quality. “These results show that we had a very complete and strong team,” she said. “All the girls delivered exactly what we had hoped for. They rode with confidence and control.”

Pohl earned the highest mark in the team test, 73.394%, with the chestnut stallion Diaton FRH. “He has excellent paces,” noted Albrecht. “Ava Osing also rides a chestnut stallion, Vitalos FRH. They have only been a partnership for a short time, which makes her performance even more impressive. Julie showed lovely riding and Viktoria, the newcomer to the team, benefited from the experience of DSP First Class, who has been to several European Championships with another rider.”

The Netherlands earned team silver, a result that Dutch trainer Monique Peutz welcomed. “This is what we hoped for beforehand. All four riders performed at their peak in the team test.” Dominique van Dalsen delivered the highest Dutch score with Just Johnson, finishing third with 71.970%, closely followed by Sofie van Rooij and Juan Tango B. Jessica Nesselaar placed eighth, and Britt Kikkert-van der Linde came fifteenth. Great Britain took team bronze, with Isla Sully and Vagabond de Massa finishing sixth as their top pair.

The Individual and Freestyle Finals both went to Julie Sofie Schmitz-Heinen (GER), who took home three gold medals. With her horse Attractive, she scored 72.941% in the Individual Test and 77.530% in the Freestyle. It was her Junior Championship debut, having previously competed at the Pony European Championships.

“She really showed how to ride beautifully. Julie is a rider with incredible feeling, and she presented her horse in a soft and correct frame. We are thrilled that the judges appreciated her subtle and sympathetic riding style. This is the kind of riding we want to promote.”

    Cornelia Albrecht

    (GER)

The Netherlands celebrated two more medals via Dominique van Dalsen, who won Individual bronze with 72.471% and Freestyle silver with 77.325%. Peutz was full of praise for her Freestyle: “Dominique rode a performance that gave us goosebumps. Everything clicked. She showed overall a lovely picture and her music timing was spot on.”

Margins were once again narrow at the top. In the Individual Final, silver went to Maria Theresa Pohl (GER) and Diaton FRH, while bronze in the Freestyle was awarded to Viktoria von Braunmühl (GER) and DSP First Class.

  • ISPOR Champions Research Transparency With Launch of Open Science Badges

ISPOR Champions Research Transparency With Launch of Open Science Badges

Lawrenceville, NJ, USA—August 4, 2025—ISPOR—The Professional Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) today introduced an initiative to recognize transparency in research for papers published in Value in Health, its preeminent HEOR journal. By awarding and displaying Open Science Badges on select published articles, the program recognizes and rewards researchers who demonstrate transparency by preregistering their studies, openly sharing data, or making research materials publicly available.

The Open Science Badges—consisting of Preregistered, Open Data, and Open Materials badges—serve as visual indicators that published research meets high standards for transparency and reproducibility. These badges signal to readers that study preregistrations, associated data, and research materials are accessible in persistent, public repositories.

“We are delighted to launch the Open Science Badges for Value in Health,” said Editors-in-Chief Nancy J. Devlin, PhD, and C. Daniel Mullins, PhD. “These provide an additional means by which we can support and promote the work of authors who are committed to open science,” they said.

“Open science practices are fundamental to building trust in real-world research,” added ISPOR CEO & Executive Director Rob Abbott. “By launching this badging initiative, ISPOR is taking a leadership role in promoting transparency and ensuring that healthcare decision makers who rely on our research have access to the highest quality, most trustworthy evidence possible.”

     Badge Requirements:

    • Preregistered badge: Authors must demonstrate that their research design, study materials, research questions, outcome variables, and predictor variables were documented in a public, date-time stamped registration system prior to data examination.
    • Open Data badge: Authors must make data available for reproducing reported results.
    • Open Materials badge: Researchers must provide sufficient information for independent researchers to reproduce their methodology.

Starting immediately, authors submitting to Value in Health can apply for badges during the manuscript submission process. The journal will implement a disclosure-based review system where authors provide statements affirming, they meet badge criteria. The editorial team will conduct evaluations to confirm that author-provided links lead to publicly accessible preregistrations, data, or materials.

The program builds on ISPOR’s existing commitment to transparency through its collaborative Real-World Evidence Registry, developed in partnership with the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology, the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, and the National Pharmaceutical Council. The registry encourages authors to preregister their study protocols before beginning work, facilitating transparency, and elevating trust in study results.

“Transparency in research isn’t just about meeting academic standards—it’s about ensuring that the evidence we publish can be trusted, validated, and built upon by the global health economics community,” said Abbott. “These badges represent a meaningful step forward in our commitment to research excellence and our mission of improving healthcare decisions.”

The ISPOR badges program aligns with the Center for Open Science’s widely adopted standards, joining more than 100 journals worldwide that offer Open Science Badges to recognize transparent research practices. ISPOR’s implementation includes specific considerations for real-world evidence studies and pharmacoeconomic research.

PTI leader calls for Imran Khan’s release, as protests take over NY’s Times Square

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and supporters of Imran Khan on Sunday (Aug 3) staged a protest in New York’s Times Square, calling for Khan’s release. Addressing protests, Former deputy speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Khan Suri said that millions of Pakistanis are leaving the country as no one wants to live in an open prison. Pakistani-Americans also took part in rallies in the streets of Chicago. Meanwhile, nationwide demonstrations in Pakistan are also scheduled to be held on August 5.

“Millions of Pakistanis are fleeing the country. No one wants to live in an open prison,” said Suri.

“730 days in a tiny death cell. Over 200 politically motivated cases. His wife, Bushra Imran Khan, is also being held under inhumane conditions. Children and families of party officials are being targeted. Addressing the protesters at Times Square, @QasimKhanSuri spoke about the actions taken against Imran Khan, his wife, and his political supporters,” PTI USA posted on X.

“This is all being done by a few government servants, who have unleashed a level of barbarism our country has never witnessed,” Suri said.

“We stand here at the crossroads of the world in Times Square to condemn state terrorism. We condemn fascism. The message from all overseas Pakistanis is that we stand with Imran Khan!” Chief Coordinator PTI NY Amjad Nawaz said in his speech.

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser on Sunday (Aug 3) announced that all preparations for the nationwide protest on August 5 have been completed. Imran Khan, who was ousted from the office of the Prime Minister in April 2022, is facing multiple charges, including corruption and terrorism, for his involvement in the May 9, 2023, riots. He is currently imprisoned. The PTI has called for nationwide protests, calling for his release, and his political supporters.

Speaking at a press conference in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI leader Shahram Khan Tarakai, Qaiser, said that the protest will be peaceful and in accordance with the law.

“This movement is about justice, not confrontation. We want a fair trial of our leader’s [Imran Khan] cases based on merit,” he said, as quoted by Geo News. He also noted that August 5 is a significant date, marking the day Khan was arrested.

The protests come amid growing security concerns in Pakistan. The country has seen a rise in terror activities, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021.

Researchers have discovered a protein which is critical for steering melanoma cancer cells as they spread throughout the body. The malignant cells become dependent on this protein to migrate, pointing to new strategies for impeding metastasis.

The protein eIF2A is generally thought to spring into action when a cell is under stress, helping ribosomes launch protein synthesis. But according to a study published today in the journal Science Advances, eIF2A has a completely different role in melanoma, helping cancerous cells control movement.

“Malignant cells that metastasize need to make their way through tissues in order to invade proximal or distant organs. Targeting eIF2A could be a new strategy to impede melanoma breaking free and seeding tumours elsewhere,” says Dr. Fátima Gebauer, corresponding author of the study and researcher at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona.

Despite accounting for only a fraction of skin cancer cases, melanoma kills almost 60,000 people worldwide each year. The five-year survival rate for localised melanoma is around 99%, while it is significantly lower for metastatic melanoma, around 35% for distant spread. Understanding how malignant cells metastasise is crucial to improve healthcare outcomes.

Working with a pair of matched human skin cell lines differing only in their metastatic potential, the team dialled down the effects of eIF2A. In cancer cells, three-dimensional tumour spheres stopped growing and migration across a scratch in the culture dish slowed dramatically. Yet protein manufacturing was barely affected, overturning the idea that eIF2A’s launches protein synthesis.

To hunt for an alternative role, the researchers pulled eIF2A out of the cell using a molecular fishing line and catalogued which protein partners it was attached to. Many turned out to be components of the centrosome, a molecular structure which arranges microtubules and orients cells during movement. When eIF2A was absent, the centrosome often pointed the wrong way as cells tried to advance.

Further experiments revealed eIF2A works to preserve parts of the centrosome so it points the cell in the right direction during movement. The protein’s tail is critical for the cell’s migration power. Trimming the tail affected the cell’s ability to move and could be a potential drug-friendly target.

“The tail behaves like scaffolding cement, holding key parts of the melanoma’s cellular compass in place so that malignant cells can navigate their way out of the primary tumour,” says Dr. Jennifer Jungfleisch, first author of the study.

The authors of the study note that eIF2A dependence only emerges after malignant transformation, suggesting a therapeutic window that might spare healthy tissues. However, more work needs to be done to see how disrupting the protein’s behaviour works in tissues and animal models.

“In this field, many potential therapeutic targets prove either redundant or essential to normal cells, but the discovery of a protein that quietly makes itself indispensable only when cells become metastatic could be a rare catch. Any potential vulnerability counts,” concludes Dr. Gebauer.

Taiwan shares end down after bad job data, market showing in U.S.

Taipei, Aug. 4 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed lower Monday as selling was triggered by losses on the U.S. markets at the end of last week on poor job data for July, but the market did recoup some of the early losses, dealers said.

The Taiex, the Taiwan Stock Exchange’s weighted index, edged down 55.44 points, or 0.24 percent, at the day’s high of 23,378.94 after hitting a low of 23,151.65. Turnover totaled NT$330.74 billion (US$11.06 billion).

“The U.S. markets continued to dictate the local market as the Taiex came under heavier pressure initially in a knee-jerk reaction to the U.S. losses,” Moore Securities Investment Consulting analyst Adam Lin said.

He was referring to a 1.23 percent fall in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and a 2.24 percent decline in the tech-heavy Nasdaq index on Friday after weaker-than-expected July nonfarm payrolls data and the huge downward revision of May and June jobs data.

“The selling on the Taiex was not intolerable at all as many investors were willing to pick up bargains, thinking the worst from the tariff issues was over and that the Taiex would not plunge as it did in April,” Lin said.

April was when the Donald Trump administration first announced its sweeping tariffs, including a 32 percent across-the-board tariff against goods made in Taiwan, that sent the Taiex plunging nearly 20 percent in a week to a closing low of 17,391.76.

Despite a 2.65 percent fall in American depositary receipts on Friday, contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the most heavily weighted stock here, fell only 0.44 percent to close at NT$1,135.00, off a low of NT$1,125.00.

TSMC’s recovery from the day’s low helped the broader market recoup about 80 points.

Among other semiconductor stocks, smartphone IC designer MediaTek Inc. lost 1.48 percent to end at NT$1,330.00, and IC packaging and testing services provider ASE Technology Holding Co. shed 3.28 percent to close at NT$147.50.

However, United Microelectronics Corp., a smaller contract chipmaker, ended up 0.37 percent at NT$41.20.

Also supported by late-session buying, iPhone assembler and AI server maker Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. lost 0.83 percent to close at NT$180.00, and Quanta Computer Inc., another AI server supplier, ended down 1.40 percent at NT$281.00.

“Underperforming the broader market, petrochemical stocks took a beating on falling crude prices after OPEC+ agreed to further increase production in September,” Lin said.

With the petrochemical index down 5.48 percent, Formosa Plastics Corp. shed 7.00 percent to close at NT$37.85 and Formosa Petrochemical Corp. slid 6.97 percent to end at NT$39.40.

In addition, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp. lost 5.57 percent to close at NT$26.30, and Nan Ya Plastics Corp. ended down 5.40 percent at NT$37.65.

Bucking the Taiex’s downturn, the financial index rose 1.60 percent.

“I suspect government-led funds stood behind the buying to bolster investors’ confidence,” Lin said.

In the sector, Cathay Financial Holding Co. rose 2.12 percent to close at NT$62.50, and Fubon Financial Holding Co. gained 1.69 percent to end at NT$84.00.

“I expect the Taiex’s consolidation will continue as many investors are waiting for a possible tariff on semiconductors,” Lin said.

Despite the fall in the index, foreign institutional investors bought a net NT$11.20 billion in shares on the market Monday.

    Truckload of Galaxy Z Fold 7 devices stolen after Samsung’s record-breaking pre-orders

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 are getting popular, and we’ve recently found out the Fold has broken pre-order records in the U.S. Apparently, these two phones are hot enough to warrant somebody to steal… a lot of them.

According to Yonhap News TV, a truck carrying 12,000 Galaxy phones was recently stolen near London Heathrow Airport. It is said that the shipment included 5,000 Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 phones, 5,000 Galaxy Watch 8 models, and also other phones like models from the Galaxy S25 lineup and Galaxy A16.

Reportedly, the shipment may have been stolen after it was moved to a warehouse after it had arrived at the airport.

The news outlet says that the cargo was worth 13.3 billion won (which is around ~$9.6 million). Luckily, the cargo was insured, so there’s no actual loss.

Reportedly, British police launched an investigation after the incident and found the container that was stolen. However, it remains unclear at the moment if any of the Galaxy phones and smartwatches were recovered.

This news comes after Samsung reported that the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip broke pre-order records for Galaxy foldables in India, the United States, and Samsung’s home country, Korea. Apparently, the thin design of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (it’s the thinnest foldable at the moment) and the updated cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 are very attractive to customers and thieves at the same time.

There’s probably no need to worry if you’ve already placed a pre-order. So far, Samsung hasn’t reported any delays or issues with customer shipments, and since the stolen cargo was insured, the company isn’t facing losses that could affect deliveries. Everything seems to be moving along as planned, so your new foldable should still arrive right on time.
