  • A Transition From H2O To C2H2 Dominated Spectra With Decreasing Stellar Luminosity

A Transition From H2O To C2H2 Dominated Spectra With Decreasing Stellar Luminosity

The average T Tauri (top) and VLMS (bottom) sample JWST spectra. The detected molecular species are highlighted. The C2H2 and H2O regions (yellow and blue, respectively) show the regions over which the fluxes are integrated. Most of the unlabeled lines in the T Tauri average are various H2O transitions. — astro-ph.EP

The chemical composition of the inner regions of disks around young stars will determine the properties of planets forming there.

Many disk physical processes drive the chemical evolution, some of which depend on/correlate with the stellar properties. We aim to explore the connection between stellar properties and inner disk chemistry, using mid-infrared spectroscopy.

We use JWST-MIRI observations of a large, diverse sample of sources to explore trends between C2H2 and H2O. Additionally, we calculate the average spectrum for the T Tauri (M>0.2 M) and very low-mass star (VLMS, M≤0.2 M) samples and use slab models to determine the properties. We find a significant anti-correlation between the flux ratio of C2H2/H2O and the stellar luminosity. Disks around VLMS have significantly higher FC2H2/FH2O flux ratios than their higher-mass counterparts.

We also explore trends with the strength of the 10 μm silicate feature, stellar accretion rate, and disk dust mass, all of which show correlations with the flux ratio, which may be related to processes driving the carbon-enrichment in disks around VLMS, but also have degeneracies with system properties.

Slab model fits to the average spectra show that the VLMS H2O emission is quite similar in temperature and column density to a warm (∼600 K) H2O component in the T Tauri spectrum, indicating that the high C/O gas phase ratio in these disks is not due to oxygen depletion alone. Instead, the presence of many hydrocarbons, including some with high column densities, points to carbon enhancement in the disks around VLMS.

The observed differences in the inner disk chemistry as a function of host properties are likely to be accounted for by differences in the disk temperatures, stellar radiation field, and the evolution of dust grains.

Charlize Theron to celebrate birthday as she turns 50

Charlize Theron is considered one of the top stars in Hollywood as she celebrates her 50th birthday.

Her career spanning three decades is marked by daring choices, unwavering commitment, and a passion for activism, which is a testament to her hard work from a small town to the halls of greatness.

At 50, the South Africa-born actress recently shared, “Time doesn’t scare me anymore.” Her remarks came at the recent film’s The Old Guard 2 premiere in Los Angeles. “It’s a gift. I feel like I’m living it fully.”

Besides work, Charlize, who has never married but has two adopted kids, reportedly has established rules for the younger men who want to date her.

Sources told Radar Online, “Charlize runs the show. She’s not interested in settling down or finding a partner. She’s done the whole serious relationship thing. Right now, it’s all about enjoying herself — and that means younger guys who know she’s the one calling the shots.”

The list of alleged demands the actress has, which insiders revealed, is, “He’s got to be seriously good-looking — flawless skin, fit, energetic — but also sharp, stylish and interesting.”

“Charlize knows exactly what she wants, and she’s not settling for less,” the tipster tattled. “She has a list of demands and every box needs ticked before she goes to bed with someone.”

The report followed a recent Call Her Daddy podcast, where the Oscar winner revealed her latest experience of having a good time with a younger man.

  • Ashes 2025-26: Glenn McGrath predicts 5-0 win for Australia

Ashes 2025-26: Glenn McGrath predicts 5-0 win for Australia

Australia won 4-0 when England last toured the country in 2021-22 and Cummins’ side have only lost two of their past 15 Tests on home soil, winning 11 and drawing two.

McGrath conceded there are “issues” with Australia’s batting, particularly their unsettled top three. Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green and Marnus Labuschagne are out of form, and opener Sam Konstas is yet to nail down his spot as the retired David Warner’s replacement.

But with England’s bowling attack also needing “to strengthen a little bit”, McGrath says the key battle will be between the tourists’ top seven and Australia’s bowlers, pinpointing Joe Root and Harry Brook as two players to watch.

“This series will be a big one for Root,” said McGrath. “He’s never really done that well in Australia, he’s not even got a 100 over there, so he’ll be keen to get out there. He’s in fine form.”

Joe Root has scored 892 Test runs in Australia, including nine fifties, but is yet to score a century.

He averages 35.68 down under, compared to his career average of 51.29, with a highest score of 89.

“Brook’s the one that I’ve enjoyed watching,” added McGrath. “He just goes out there, plays his game, and takes it on. The Australians will need to get on him pretty early.

“Ben Duckett is such an aggressive opener. Zak Crawley would be keen to score a few more runs than he has previously.

“It’s the top order or top and middle order of England against the Australian fast bowlers and Lyon. That’s going to be a big match-up.”

England have won 25 of their 41 Tests under head coach Brendon McCullum but are yet to win a five-match Test series, most recently drawing 2-2 with India.

McGrath, 55, was full of admiration for England’s style under McCullum but challenged them to be more mentally “switched on”.

“I love seeing sportspeople go out there and play without fear, ” he said.

“That’s what Baz is looking to bring into this England team – play without fear.

“I’d like to see a bit more accountability and the mental side of the game, just them switched on a bit more. It’s exciting.”

  • Sonos prices will rise this year thanks to tariffs

Sonos prices will rise this year thanks to tariffs

President Donald Trump’s tariff policies are putting Sonos in a bind.

Simply put, the tariffs will result in higher prices on Sonos products in the U.S., as confirmed by company CEO Tom Conrad in a Bloomberg report. Conrad didn’t go into granular detail about which products will see price hikes and by how much, but it’s clear that this is going to happen, one way or another, unless Trump reverses course on his tariff policies.

“We continue to work closely with our contract manufacturers and our Channel Partners to share tariff costs, though it has become clear that we’ll need to raise prices on certain products later this year,” Conrad said.

    Mashable Light Speed

Sonos does most of its manufacturing in Vietnam and Malaysia, both of which will be subject to higher tariffs soon. Trump’s tariffs have wreaked havoc on the practice of pricing tech products since he announced them back in April. Examples include Nintendo and Microsoft in the gaming space, both of whom have raised prices on consoles and accessories that are several years old and, under normal conditions, would potentially get price drops instead.

Anyway, if you want a Sonos product, maybe now is the time to get it.

Type 2 Diabetes: Study reveals eating French fries can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes by a shocking percentage |

If French fries have been your go-to order at restaurants and a favoured side dish with meals, then it might be time to cut them out of your life. According to a new study published in The BMJ on August 6, 2025, the potato-based dish can elevate the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 20%.But, if you swap these out for whole-grain foods, these odds could decrease by 19%, according to the same study. The study focused on data involving more than 205,000 people enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study, the Nurses’ Health Study II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. The participants filled out detailed dietary questionnaires for a long period for three decades, which included questions about how many times a week they ate French fries, whether they baked, boiled or mashed potatoes and how many times they ate whole grains in a week.Their health was also tracked to gain results, and over the period, a shocking 22,299 participants developed Type 2 diabetes.“The public health message here is simple and powerful: Small changes in our daily diet can have an important impact on the risk of type 2 diabetes. Limiting potatoes — especially limiting French fries — and choosing healthy, whole grain sources of carbohydrate could help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes across the population,” said Dr Walter Willett, study co-author and professor of epidemiology and nutrition at Harvard University.

Who is to blame: French fries or potatoes?

However, is it the fries or the vegetable itself? “We’re shifting the conversation from, ‘Are potatoes good or bad?’ to a more nuanced — and useful — question: How are they prepared, and what might we eat instead?” said Seyed Mohammad Mousavi, a postdoctoral research fellow in Harvard’s Department of Nutrition and lead author of the study. It does matter how the potatoes are cooked. While just three servings a week of French fries elevated the diabetes risk by 20%, eating the vegetable as baked, boiled or mashed had absolutely no influence on the risk of the disease.

Replacing the French fries order with whole grains, such as whole grain pastas or bread, reduced the risk of the disease by up to 19%. Even substituting whole grains with refined ones can add to the lowered diabetes risk. These findings were substantiated by 2 separate analyses where data from numerous previous studies involving more than 500,000 people led to similar results when it came to the battle of French fries versus whole grains.“For policymakers, our findings highlight the need to move beyond broad food categories and pay closer attention to how foods are prepared and what they’re replacing,” Willett said in a Harvard news release. “Not all carbs — or even all potatoes — are created equal, and that distinction is crucial when it comes to shaping effective dietary guidelines.”

  • James Patterson to write book about Luigi Mangione | Books

James Patterson to write book about Luigi Mangione | Books

Bestselling crime writer James Patterson and investigative journalist Vicky Ward are writing a book on the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, while actor Dave Franco said this week that he would be “open” to playing accused murderer Luigi Mangione in a biopic if one were to be made.

Mangione is currently awaiting trial for the murder of Thompson, who was shot and killed in Manhattan on 4 December last year.

“This is a story about the American Dream Gone Wrong,” said Patterson in a statement on the book, which does not yet have a title or release date. “It’s also a story of one young man’s descent from Ivy League graduate to notorious accused killer to so-called political martyr.”

Mangione, 27, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of murder, using a weapon with a silencer, and two counts of stalking. The US attorney general, Pam Bondi, said earlier this year that she had directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty.

“Like millions around the world, Vicky and I were riveted by coverage of the five-day manhunt from Midtown Manhattan to Altoona, Pennsylvania,” Patterson said. Mangione was eventually arrested in a McDonald’s.

“This story touches all of us,” said Ward. “It goes to the heart of the social, cultural and political issues dividing the US right now. Nothing is more of a reviled black box than the health insurance industry, and it’s time to open it up, through a crime that has caught the attention of the country.”

The book will be published by Little, Brown in the US, which also published The Idaho Four, Patterson and Ward’s recent book on the murder of four students.

The news comes in the same week that Franco said he would be open to playing Mangione in a biopic when asked on the talkshow Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen on Tuesday. “No one has approached me about it yet, I’ll say that … More people in my life reached out about this exact thing than anything else that has ever happened. Let’s just say I am open if it’s the right people, and let’s leave it at that.”

After the shooting, Mangione gained an avalanche of support on social media. The online fandom has sparked criticism for glorifying an alleged murderer. “The suspect, who police now believe to be Mangione, was a fit young man and I think it’d be mistaken to overlook the degree that likely propelled the story,” Jared Holt, a senior research analyst at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, told the Guardian in December.

“The other feature of Mangione is one that plays an outsized role in every single point of American life: his race,” wrote Ben Makuch in the Guardian at the time. “If he were Black or Latino, this story would likely have played out very differently.”
