It Looks Like a School Bathroom Smoke Detector. A Teen Hacker Showed It Could Be an Audio Bug

A couple of years ago, a curious, then-16-year-old hacker named Reynaldo Vasquez-Garcia was on his laptop at his Portland-area high school, seeing what computer systems he could connect to via the Wi-Fi—“using the school network as a lab,” as he puts it—when he spotted a handful of mysterious devices with the identifier “IPVideo Corporation.”

After a closer look and some googling, Garcia figured out that a company by that name was a subsidiary of Motorola, and the devices he’d found in his school seemed to be something called the Halo 3C, a “smart” smoke and vape detection gadget. “They look just like smoke detectors, but they have a whole bunch of features like sensors and stuff,” Garcia says.

As he read more, he was intrigued to learn that the Halo 3C goes beyond detecting smoke and vaping—including a distinct feature for discerning THC vaping in particular. It also has a microphone for listening out for “aggression,” gunshots, and keywords such as someone calling for help, a feature that to Vasquez-Garcia immediately raised concerns of more intrusive surveillance.

Now, after months of reverse engineering and security testing, Vasquez-Garcia and a fellow hacker he’s partnered with who goes by the pseudonym “Nyx,” have shown that it’s possible to hack one of those Halo 3C gadgets—which they’ve taken to calling by the nickname “snitch puck”—and take full control of it.

At the Defcon hacker conference today, they plan to show that by exploiting just a few relatively simple security vulnerabilities, any hacker on the same network could have hijacked a Halo 3C to turn it into a real-time audio eavesdropping bug, disabled its detection capabilities, created fake alerts for vaping or gunshots, or even played whatever sound or audio they chose out of the device’s speaker. Motorola said it has since developed a firmware update to address those security flaws that will automatically push to cloud-connected devices by Friday.

Many of the hackers’ tricks are on display in a video demo below, which the Vasquez-Garcia and Nyx made ahead of their Defcon presentation:

Battlefield 6 dev says bots are limited to Training Grounds in open beta, not regular multiplayer

DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 6’s open beta will only feature AI-controlled soldiers in specific Training Grounds playlists, following community concern about the use of bots in multiplayer matches.

The clarification comes after player backlash to earlier suggestions that Battlefield 6 might use bots to fill empty slots in online lobbies, a system that proved unpopular in Battlefield 2042.

In a social media statement, DICE said AI soldiers will be limited to the Training Grounds section of the open beta, which is currently hosting the Breakthrough Initiation playlist.

According to the developer, Breakthrough Initiation pairs players with 15 others while AI soldiers make up the remainder of the match.

DICE said the mode is intended to introduce newcomers to the core mechanics of Breakthrough and provide a more manageable experience than a full multiplayer lobby.

Players who prefer to avoid AI opponents can do so by selecting Breakthrough from the “Featured” playlist row, which does not include bots.

DICE added that Training Grounds playlists are only available to players below rank 15, after which they are removed from the front-end menu.

The studio’s statement emphasised that AI soldiers are not part of the game’s regular multiplayer modes during the beta period.

This approach, DICE suggested, may help ease new players into the large-scale combat that Battlefield is known for.

Battlefield 6’s open beta is currently in early access, drawing large player numbers and significant queue times.

For those seeking an investment that isn’t directly linked to inflation fluctuations, gold could be a suitable option. Historically, gold tends to appreciate over time. A gold IRA is one of the most popular ways to buy and hold gold, providing portfolio stability during turbulent markets. It’s also a practical solution for investors who prefer not to deal with the logistics of storing physical gold bullion.

    Historical gold price chart

Gold isn’t always a guaranteed winner. In robust economic periods, equities can outperform both in the short and long run. From 1971 through 2024, the stock market’s average annual return was 10.7%, while gold’s was 7.9% over the same span.

Still, during periods of economic instability, gold is considered a safer, risk-averse asset. Many investors view it more as a store of value than as an investment like stocks or bonds.

    What does “spot gold” mean?

The spot gold price refers to the immediate purchase or sale price of gold in an over-the-counter transaction. This metric helps investors gauge current demand and market trends. Put simply, a higher spot gold price signals stronger demand. Unlike futures contracts, the spot price is for instant delivery.

If the future price exceeds the spot price, this is known as contango, common in commodities with significant storage costs. If the futures price is below the spot price, the market is in backwardation.

Numerous factors can influence the spot price, causing it to fluctuate frequently. Prospective gold investors should be comfortable with this level of price volatility.

What is price spread in gold trading?

A price spread is the gap between the price at which an asset can be purchased and the price at which it can be sold.

In gold trading, these are called the ask price (the cost to buy) and the bid price (the amount you’d receive selling). The bid price is always less than the ask price.

A narrower spread indicates a more liquid market. When the spread is tight, it suggests rising demand for gold.

  • How to invest in gold

If your mind jumps to Scrooge McDuck diving into gold coins when you think of gold investment, that’s only partly accurate. While buying physical gold bars, coins, or jewelry is possible, gold is frequently traded via exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

James Taska, a fee-based financial advisor, notes, “There is a great debate as to whether paper gold is as useful as the physical. From a financial advisor’s viewpoint, it is much easier to rebalance a client’s allocation of gold if it is owned as an exchange-traded fund (ETF), and the spread when attempting to buy/sell gold can be quite variable and wide.”

    Common gold investment options include:

    • Gold bars: Known as bullion, these are sold by weight (gram or ounce), with purity, weight, and manufacturer details stamped on the bar. Gold rounds are another form you may find bullion in.
    • Gold coins: Collectibles like the American Gold Eagle often carry a premium over bars of equivalent weight due to their rarity and collectible status.
    • Gold jewelry: Jewelry’s price usually exceeds its gold content value due to design and craftsmanship.
    • Gold futures contracts: These allow investors to agree on a set price for gold at a future date, enabling speculation without physical delivery.
    • Gold funds: Mutual funds or ETFs holding gold assets. Like other ETFs, their value fluctuates with the underlying holdings.

Is it a good time to invest in gold?

Determining whether now is the optimal time to invest in gold is somewhat subjective. However, gold can help diversify portfolios and cushion against market swings.

Currently, gold remains a stable asset amid high market volatility. Prices have reached record levels, climbing over 25% since early 2025, driven by persistent inflation and economic uncertainty. Many experts recommend adding gold to diversify holdings.

Current precious metals prices as of 8:50 a.m. ET today

Silver, platinum, and palladium are also popular portfolio additions. Gold is generally less volatile than silver, which can swing widely even within a single day. Silver’s industrial uses make it more sensitive to economic shifts.

Platinum and palladium behave similarly to silver. While these rare metals can add diversification, they tend to fluctuate more than gold.

What It Is And How to See It : ScienceAlert

Earth’s skies are about to be graced by a full Moon, plump and shining in the sky, swimming across a lake of stars like a giant sturgeon.

Okay, maybe not, but the full Moon that will rise on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 August is called the full Sturgeon Moon, the old US Farmer’s Almanac name for the Moon for the late summer month of August.

This particular full Moon will arrive just in time to mess with the Perseid meteor shower, which is due to peak on August 13 – but at least when you look at it, you’ll know why we call it the Sturgeon Moon.

Related: One of 2025’s Best Meteor Showers Is Upon Us: Here’s How to Watch

Each of the months in the year has its own Farmer’s Almanac name. Each name can be just one of several, too, depending on cultural contexts and geographical locations. These can have to do with the geography of the region, agricultural calendars, and Native American customs.

The sturgeon is among the largest of the freshwater bony fish, with a lineage that can be traced back to the Jurassic. It has a cartilaginous skeleton, and its long body is armored by bony plates called scutes. They live a long time – their average lifespan is 50 to 60 years, and the largest of them can grow up to several meters in length.

It’s highly prized for its meat and caviar, and can be found – among other places throughout the Northern Hemisphere – in the Great Lakes of North America. Late summer is apparently prime sturgeon fishing season in the Great Lakes, which is why August’s Moon is named for it.

It’s worth noting that sturgeons are more critically endangered than any other group species, and maybe ought to be left alone.

Other names for August’s full Moon, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, include the Flying Up Moon, from the Cree, describing young birds leaving the nest; the Mountain Shadows Moon, from the Tlingit; and several other names to do with gathering the harvest before colder weather sets in.

The full Moon is always directly opposite the side of Earth from the Sun, so look for its rise on the eastern horizon at sunset. It’ll be at its fullest in the early hours of August 9, just before it sets behind the western horizon.

Thomas is first WNBA player with 3 straight triple-doubles in Mercury win over Fever

Alyssa Thomas had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to become the first WNBA player with three straight triple-doubles, and the Phoenix Mercury beat the Indiana Fever 95-60 for their third consecutive victory

PHOENIX — Alyssa Thomas had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to become the first WNBA player with three straight triple-doubles, and the Phoenix Mercury beat the Indiana Fever 95-60 on Thursday night for their third consecutive victory.

Thomas secured her 19th career triple-double with 3:47 left on a pass to the corner for DeWanna Bonner’s 3-pointer. Thomas has 41 points, 33 rebounds and 32 assists in her last three games.

Bonner finished with a season-high 23 points. Satou Sabally had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Kahleah Copper scored 11 for Phoenix (19-11).

Sophie Cunningham scored 18 points and shot 5 of 8 on 3-pointers for Indiana (17-14). Kelsey Mitchell added 12 points. Caitlin Clark (right groin) missed her ninth straight game.

Phoenix had its lead trimmed to 53-44 early in the third quarter after Cunningham made a 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions. But the Mercury answered with a 14-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Sami Whitcomb, for a 23-point lead with 2:39 left in the third.

Indiana went four-plus minutes without scoring in the third and finished the quarter with just 11 points.

The season series is tied 1-all, with the final regular-season meeting on Sept. 2 in Phoenix.

  • Structured Walking Program Boosts Stroke Recovery Outcomes

Structured Walking Program Boosts Stroke Recovery Outcomes

    TOPLINE:

The structured, progressive “Walk ‘n Watch” exercise protocol, delivered by physical therapists to patients in Canada with subacute stroke, was associated with greater improvement in walking endurance, speed, balance, mobility, and quality of life than usual care in a new phase 3 trial.

    METHODOLOGY:

    • This phase 3, pragmatic, stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized controlled trial included more than 300 participants with confirmed stroke within 12 weeks previously (mean age, 68 years; 61% men) across 12 inpatient stroke rehabilitation units in Canada between 2021 and 2024.
    • About 162 patients were assigned to the usual care group, and 144 were assigned to the Walk ‘n Watch group.
    • Three sites each were allocated to one of four sequences consisting of 4, 8, 12, or 16 months of usual care, followed by a 2-week transition period, and then up to 20 months dedicated to the Walk ‘n Watch intervention. Front-line physical therapists delivered the Walk ‘n Watch protocol with at least 30 minutes of walking-related activities per session, with the intensity progressively increased on the basis of heart rate and step count monitors.
    • The primary endpoint was walking endurance as measured with the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) 4 weeks after randomization.

    TAKEAWAY:

    • In the Walk ‘n Watch group, the mean distance increased from 163.6 m at baseline to 297.2 m at 4 weeks compared with 137.1 m to 223.6 m in the usual care group. The intervention also had a greater “clinically meaningful improvement” in the 6MWT vs the usual care (intention-to-treat mean difference, 43.6 m; per-protocol mean difference, 52.6; 95% CI, 16.3-89.4).
    • Men had a greater improvement on the 6MWT with Walk ‘n Watch vs usual care (mean difference, 64.1 m), whereas women showed an improvement of only 15.7 m).
    • Improvements in quality of life, balance, mobility, and gait speed were greater in the Walk ‘n Watch group than in the usual care group.
    • No serious adverse events (SAEs) occurred during Walk ‘n Watch sessions, although five and four SAEs requiring admission to acute care were reported in the Walk ‘n Watch and usual care groups, respectively, while participants were on the rehab ward. Of all 58 falls recorded during the study, only one occurred during a Walk ‘n Watch session.

    IN PRACTICE:

“The Walk ‘n Watch protocol resulted in a clinically meaningful improvement in walking endurance in patients with subacute stroke in a real-world setting. The protocol can be readily implemented into practice with minimal additional resources,” the investigators wrote.

    SOURCE:

The study was led by Sue Peters, PhD, School of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Health Sciences, Elborn College, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada. It was published online on July 16 in The Lancet Neurology.

    LIMITATIONS:

Data collection and recruitment were influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The intracluster correlation coefficient for 6MWT was greater than what was seen in the pilot study, possibly due to greater heterogeneity in the types of sites in this trial.

    DISCLOSURES:

The study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canada Brain Research Fund, Michael Smith Health Research BC, Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé, Canada Research Program, and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Several investigators reported having financial ties with various organizations, and one investigator reported serving as chair of the Rehabilitation Care Alliance of Ontario and co-chair of the March of Dimes After Stroke Advisory Committee. Full details are listed in the original article.
