  • Jordan’s king warns against Israeli “unilateral measures” in Gaza, West Bank-Xinhua

AMMAN, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid during a meeting with a visiting U.S. congressional delegation, the Royal Hashemite Court said in a statement.

During the meeting, the king reiterated Jordan’s rejection of Israeli plans to consolidate its “occupation” of Gaza and expand military control there, warning that such “unilateral measures” pose risks to regional stability.

He also dismissed Israeli statements on the so-called “Greater Israel” vision and condemned settlement expansion in the West Bank, which he said violates international law and undermines Palestinians’ right to establish an independent state.

The talks also touched on regional developments, with the king stressing the need to support Syria’s security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

  • Zoe Kravitz Has Heard It, New Vinyls Released

Zoe Kravitz Has Heard It, New Vinyls Released

Two things are for sure with every Taylor Swift album release: her friends are going to love it, and she’s going to give fans multiple vinyl variants to choose from. On Sunday, Zoë Kravitz gave Swift’s album her seal of approval, telling Extra she’s already obsessed with it.

During the interview, Kravitz revealed that she had “heard bits” of the album the singer announced last week. “It’s fantastic, of course,” Kravitz told the interviewer of the Max Martin and Shellback-produced album. “No skips.”

Then, on Monday, after placing a countdown on her website, Swift unveiled two new vinyl variants for the album, which feature imagery different than the one she shared last week as The Life of a Showgirl was announced.

The new cover art sees Swift in a sparkly, dark leotard and matching gloves, leaning her hand against the wall with the name of the album written in sparkly font. The records with that cover artwork are being dubbed “The Shiny Bug Edition,” with fans being able to choose between a “wintergreen and onyx marbled” vinyl color and a “violet shimmer marbled” vinyl (both of which are already sold out).

The records featuring that imagery are available exclusively on her website through Aug. 20, offered as a “limited run” and promised to be the “first and only pressing” of the variant.

Swift unveiled The Life of a Showgirl artwork last week during an interview with her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and his brother Jason on the New Heights podcast. The LP, which features Sabrina Carpenter on the title track, is set to release on Oct. 3.

“This album is about what was going on behind the scenes in my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant. It just comes from like the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life,” she said. “And so that effervescence has come through on this record. And like, as you said, bangers.”

Outside hitter Hilary Johnson scored 15 points (13 kills, one block, one ace) for the North Americans.

The Serbians met the Netherlands in what ended up being the tournament’s unofficial final on Sunday and saw Uzelac deliver 22 points (18 kills, two blocks, two aces) and Bošković add 16 (14 kills, two blocks) in their 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) victory. • Tenants in England spending ‘unaffordable’ 36% of income on rent, shows survey | Renting property

Tenants in England spending ‘unaffordable’ 36% of income on rent, shows survey | Renting property

Renting homes in England is becoming increasing unaffordable, according to official figures that show tenants pay an average of 36.3% of their income on rent, a figure that rises to 41.6% in London.

People earning a median salary spent 36.3% of their income on an average-priced rented home in England in 2024, up from 34.2% in 2023, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The figures for the financial year show that the price of renting a home in England is moving further beyond a 30% rent to income threshold that the ONS considers to be affordable. The new data has fuelled calls for rent regulation to end a growing affordability crisis for renters.

London was the least affordable region with rents of £1,957 per month, meaning tenants had to pay on average 41.6% of their income on housing.

The top 10 least affordable council areas were all in London, topped by Kensington and Chelsea where those on median incomes had to pay 74.3% of their gross earnings on rent. The next worst were: Westminster (55.8%), Wandsworth (54%), Camden (51.7%), Hammersmith and Fulham (51.3%), Haringey (48.3%), Lambeth (47.1%), Merton (46.8%), Islington (45.5%) and Richmond (45.3%).

All 32 council areas in London have been above the 30% affordability threshold for eight of the nine financial years ending 2016 to 2024, the ONS bulletin said.

Outside London, the least affordable areas based on the percentage of salary paid on rent were: Bristol (44.6%), Bath and North East Somerset (42.7%), Brighton (42.7%) and Trafford (41.3%), as well as Sevenoaks (42%) and Watford (41%), which have a high number of London commuters.

The figures showed that rents last year rose faster than incomes in England. Faster rising wages meant the ratios of rent to income briefly dipped in 2022-23, but since then the ratio has worsened and rents look set to continue to outstrip rises in incomes.

In some regions of England and in Wales and Northern Ireland, rents were found to be still affordable, according to the ONS metric. The most affordable region in England was the north-east, with average rents of £641 per month, or 19.8% of income.

In Wales, all but two of the 24 council areas had average rents that were below the 30% affordability threshold. Only in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan was it above this level.

In Northern Ireland, rents were relatively flat with the ratio ticking up to 25.3% from 25.1% from the previous year.

Tom Darling, the director at the Renters’ Reform Coalition, said: “These figures show that the biggest issue facing renters – the cost of their rent – isn’t going away any time soon.

“Though the government’s renters’ rights bill will introduce crucial improvements to security and standards, it won’t put a lid on the affordability crisis. While millions are forced to spend less on essentials like groceries to afford their rent, the government will have a hard time making the case at the next election that they’ve delivered for renters.”

Darling added: “The government should establish a national rental affordability commission to look at ways to bring rents down relative to incomes – including investigating different types of rent regulation.”

Sarah Coles, the head of personal finance for Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “Renters faced a horrible squeeze on their incomes, and there’s every sign it has got worse since. Landlords are continuing to sell up – concerned about higher costs from more regulation and more tax.

“It means more tenants chasing dwindling numbers of properties, so rents are continuing to rise. At the same time, although wages have risen impressively, they have been consistently outpaced by private rental increases.”

Joseph Elliott, the lead analyst at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, said: “High rents are locking people out of secure homes and driving poverty and homelessness.

“The government needs to tackle the root causes of the housing crisis – unaffordable rents, frozen housing support, and a chronic shortage of social housing.”

Ex-Pakistan pacer urges Babar, Rizwan to follow Kohli’s example after Asia Cup snub: ‘Consider retiring…’ – Firstpost

Batting stars Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were overlooked by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for next month’s Asia Cup in the UAE, with fellow seniors such as Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman getting included, and former pacer Tanveer Ahmed offered the duo a radical solution.

Pakistan batting stars Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have been advised to follow Virat Kohli’s footsteps and announce their retirement after getting overlooked by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE. The only difference is that while Kohli remains active in One-Day Internationals, ex-Pakistan pacer Tanveer Ahmed has advised Babar and Rizwan to retire from international cricket altogether in order to preserve their “respect”, his comment causing quite the stir on social media.

    STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Unlike Babar and Rizwan, senior pacer Shaheen Afridi has been included along with senior pacers Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali as well as veteran opener Fakhar Zaman in the 17-man squad led by Salman Agha.

Meri Babar Azam aur Rizwan say request hai ager ap log yeh samajhtey hain ap logon ke izzat nahi ha tou retirement ley lo international cricket say humarey samne virat kohli ke examples hain. @babarazam258, @iMRizwanPak izzat apney hath main ha (My request to Babar Azam and Rizwan is that if you feel your respect is not intact, then consider retiring from international cricket. We have examples of Virat Kohli in front of us. Babar and Rizwan, respect is in your hands),” Tanveer tweeted.

How Babar and Rizwan fell out of favour in the shortest format

Babar and Rizwan had starred in Pakistan’s historic victory over India in Dubai, where the arch-rivals will square off on 14 September, in the 2021 T20 World Cup. It was the first time Pakistan had ever defeat India in a World Cup match – either ODI or T20. The duo had also played a key role in guiding the Men in Green to the T20 World Cup final the very next year, with Pakistan falling short in the final hurdle against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Their T20 stocks, however, nosedived after Pakistan’s dismal campaign in last year’s T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean, where they crashed out in the first round following defeats against co-hosts USA as well as India.

Kohli had retired from T20Is along with Rohit Sharma after the two superstars propelled India to victory in last year’s T20 World Cup. The two would also announce their retirement from the Test format within a week of one another in May, nearly half-a-year after a their underwhelming run in the five-match Test series against Australia Down Under.

    STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

While Rohit’s retirement was largely along expected lines, it’s was Kohli’s Test retirement that took the cricketing world by surprise, leading to an outpouring of tributes.

iOS 26 beta 7 adds toggle for new battery notifications

iOS 26 adds a brand new Adaptive Power mode to extend your iPhone’s battery, and in today’s beta 7 release there’s a Settings toggle for notifications. Here’s how it works.

Adaptive Power notifications can now be enabled or disabled

Adaptive Power is a new battery mode coming in iOS 26. It acts as a more moderate alternative to Low Power Mode, impacting performance far less but also bringing fewer battery savings.

    Here’s how Apple describes it:

When your battery usage is higher than usual, iPhone can extend your battery life by making performance adjustments, such as lowering display brightness, allowing some activities to take longer, or turning on Low Power Mode at 20%.

The main idea is that Adaptive Power can stretch your battery on days where your usage seems unusually high.

A recent beta version of iOS 26 introduced notifications for Adaptive Power. These will let you know when your iPhone’s performance is being altered in some way to save battery.

You can see an example below:

Many users are just now discovering Adaptive Power notifications because today’s beta 7 release added a dedicated Settings toggle for them.

Inside Settings ⇾ Battery ⇾ Power Mode, there’s an ‘Adaptive Power Notifications’ toggle that’s brand new.

You can choose whether to enable notifications when Adaptive Power is actively optimizing performance, or disable them.

Essentially it comes down to a simple choice: do you want to know when your battery’s being extended, or leave the feature to operate more “invisibly”?

Have you been using Adaptive Power in iOS 26? How has it been working for you? Let us know in the comments.
