Are Beyoncé and Jay-Z moving to Cotswolds countryside near celebrity neighbors?

Music power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z are reportedly in the final stages of purchasing a sprawling 58-acre estate in the Cotswolds, according to The Mirror. The pair sparked speculation about a UK move after being spotted in Oxfordshire earlier this summer, and sources now suggest the deal is nearly complete.

The off-market property, which carried a guide price of £8.5 million, comes with planning permission to build a luxury countryside retreat. Architectural documents describe the proposed residence as a “spectacular rural estate” that will combine “timeless materials with contemporary architecture.” The estate is also said to include a lake and woodland, integrating sustainable design and seamless indoor-outdoor living.

A source close to the sale told The Mirror, “They were in negotiation on the price, and it isn’t on the market any more, which would suggest it’s a done deal.”

Located just five minutes from the picturesque village of Great Tew, the estate is near several celebrity homes, including those of David and Victoria Beckham, Simon Cowell, and Ellen DeGeneres. Exclusive members’ club Soho Farmhouse and luxury farm shop Daylesford Organic are also nearby, further enhancing the area’s appeal.

Reports suggest Beyoncé and Jay-Z viewed the site by helicopter between performances during the UK leg of her Cowboy Carter World Tour. An insider noted that the location’s proximity to friends such as DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi made it especially attractive.

The couple, who share three children—Blue Ivy, 13, and twins Rumi and Sir, 8—are said to be seeking a home outside Los Angeles following devastating wildfires earlier this year. “They will always be based in LA, but the UK is on the agenda,” a friend revealed. “Beyoncé loves the UK because they support everything she does.”

The Oxfordshire countryside has become a hotspot for American celebrities seeking privacy and space. DeGeneres and de Rossi relocated to the area last year, while other famous visitors include Brad Pitt, Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift, who rented a property in Great Tew during her Eras Tour.

  • Indole chemistry breakthrough opens doors for more effective drug synthesis

Indole chemistry breakthrough opens doors for more effective drug synthesis

Indole, a molecule made up of a six-membered benzene ring fused to a five-membered ring containing nitrogen, forms the core structure of many biologically active compounds. Derivatives of indole, where hydrogen atoms are replaced by various chemical groups, are naturally produced by plants, fungi, and even the human body.

Due to their properties, indoles have gained attention as a backbone for synthesizing a wide variety of drugs. Since 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved 14 indole drugs to treat conditions, such as migraines, infections, and hypertension. Chemists have developed many strategies to attach different chemical groups to indoles. Some approaches introduce new groups directly onto the ring, while others involve temporary structural changes through intermediates. However, modifying specific positions on the indole ring, such as the C5 carbon, remains a challenge due to its low reactivity.

In a recent study, researchers at Chiba University, Japan, reported a method for selectively attaching an alkyl group to the C5 position of indole using a relatively inexpensive copper-based catalyst, which produced the desired product in yields of up to 91%. This method offers a more affordable and scalable approach for modifying indoles, which could be especially valuable in drug development.

The study, led by Associate Professor Shingo Harada, included Mr. Tomohiro Isono, B.Pharm., Ms. Mai Yanagawa, M.Pharm., and Professor Tetsuhiro Nemoto from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Chiba University, and was published online in the journal Chemical Science on July 15, 2025.

“We developed a direct, regioselective C5-H functionalization reaction of indoles under copper catalysis. The resulting compounds contain structural features commonly found in natural indole alkaloids and drug molecules, highlighting the usefulness of this approach for making biologically important compounds,” says Dr. Harada.

The reaction uses carbenes, highly reactive carbon species that can form new carbon-carbon bonds. In an earlier study, the team used rhodium-based carbenes to attach groups at the C4 position of indole, guided by unsaturated enone groups placed at the 3-position. In this study, they used a similar strategy but altered the reaction conditions to target the C5 position instead.

They tested the reaction using a model compound, N-benzyl indole with an enone group, together with dimethyl α-diazomalonates as the carbene source and different combinations of rhodium, copper, and silver salts as catalysts. Initially, the desired C5-functionalized product formed only in small amounts, with yields up to 18%. However, when they used a combination of copper and silver salts (Cu(OAc)2·H2O and AgSbF6), the yield rose to 62%. Upon carrying out further optimizations, such as adjusting the solvent volume and increasing the concentration, they improved the yield to 77%.

The reaction proved to be highly versatile, working with a wide range of indoles. When the enone group was replaced at the 3-position with a benzoyl group, the yield increased to 91%. Successful reactions were also observed with indoles bearing other substituents, such as methoxybenzyl, allyl, and phenyl groups, opening the door to the synthesis of structurally diverse molecules.

To uncover the reaction mechanism, the team carried out quantum chemical calculations, which suggested that the carbene does not react directly at C5. Instead, it first forms a bond at the C4 position, creating a strained three-membered ring. This intermediate then rearranges, shifting the new bond to the C5 position. The copper catalyst plays a critical role in making this pathway possible by stabilizing the intermediate and lowering the energy barrier for the rearrangement.

This copper-catalyzed strategy offers a reliable and cost-effective approach for modifying indoles at the C5 position, producing compounds that closely resemble biologically active indole-based agents. Dr. Harada highlights the method’s potential for drug discovery by stating, “While it may not cause a significant shift right away, it could foster steady progress in drug discovery, leading to a small yet beneficial long-term impact.”

The team is continuing its research, exploring other metal-carbene reactions to develop more selective and efficient strategies for constructing indole-based molecules that might one day contribute to the treatment of specific diseases.

  • Sydney Sweeney Helped American Eagle Back Into the Spotlight. Can It Stay There?

Sydney Sweeney Helped American Eagle Back Into the Spotlight. Can It Stay There?

There’s capturing attention and then there’s keeping it.

Whether American Eagle Outfitters (AEO), which not long ago managed the former, can do the latter, is the question facing investors today. So far, it has.

A pre-earnings bump helped the retailer’s shares finish May 13 at $12.55 a share—before the company pulled its outlook, sending the stock lower. Later that month it posted a larger-than-expected quarterly loss; the stock finished May a bit below $11. But it’s since climbed its way back, ending Friday at $12.85.

It got there in part thanks to a marketing campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney that reintroduced investors to its brand—while making it something of a cultural touchpoint. That energy may have moved on, with the latest brand to stir up sentiment being restaurant chain Cracker Barrel (CBRL)—but the stock has held on.

Wall Street doesn’t seem convinced that can continue. Bank of America analysts on Monday slapped a bearish rating on the shares, setting a $10 price target on the stock that is a buck below the Visible Alpha mean, cutting its outlook for profits and suggesting that it lacks pricing power that could help it navigate the effects of tariffs. (None of the analysts tracked by Visible Alpha have bullish ratings on the shares.)

“Near term, there is risk that the recent Sydney Sweeney campaign added momentum” to third-quarter sales, the analysts wrote. (Its next quarterly results are due Sept. 3, with Wall Street broadly expecting revenue to fall year-over-year.) “However, we do not assign a high likelihood that momentum from this campaign can fully inflect the business over the long run.”

American Eagle’s shares were down more than 1% in Monday trading. They’ve lost about one-quarter of their value in 2025.

  • UK gender pay gap underestimated for two decades, report says | Gender pay gap

UK gender pay gap underestimated for two decades, report says | Gender pay gap

The UK’s gender pay gap has been underestimated for more than 20 years, according to research that could raise fresh questions about the quality of data used to inform key pay decisions across the UK.

The findings, released in the British Journal of Industrial Relations on Monday, suggest that, since 2004, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) had failed to properly account for the fact that it received more data from larger employers, when it reported its annual survey of hours and earnings (Ashe).

It meant the survey gave undue weighting to large businesses, where pay was higher and the difference in pay between men and women was generally smaller. As a result, it gave too little to smaller private businesses, particularly surrounding pay and representation for women.

That resulted in the ONS consistently underestimating the gender pay gap by a “small but noteworthy” margin of one percentage point, the research paper said.

The research paper’s lead author, Prof John Forth from the Bayes Business School at City St George’s, University of London, said the data collected in this annual survey “has far-reaching consequences across our society, informing everything from official pay recommendations for doctors and nurses to anti-poverty measures like the national minimum wage. It is, therefore, crucial that the data is a true representation of wages and earnings in modern Britain.”

The flawed data may have influenced key pay decisions. The Ashe survey is used by the Low Pay Commission to monitor the impact of the minimum wage, and by the Office for the Pay Review Bodies to help determine public sector pay settlements. It is the latest blow to the ONS, which has struggled with mounting problems that have forced it to delay or cancel several of its releases in recent months

The ONS did not immediately respond to the Guardian’s request for comment but told the Financial Times that the survey’s sampling and weighting was under review and that the agency had improved its approach to the survey since 2024 in a way that would address some of the issues raised in the report.

“Weighting schemes are just one aspect of the methodology of a complex survey such as Ashe, and we regularly scrutinise these methods to ensure they continue to be relevant and aligned to best practice,” the ONS added.

Forth said he welcomed the ONS review. “We encourage them to look at how the data can be made more representative of jobs in all types of organisations, so that the issues we observed can be addressed.”

  • Princess Charlotte is spitting image of Prince William in summer outing

Princess Charlotte is spitting image of Prince William in summer outing

Prince William’s absolute twin  Princess Charlotte.

Royal fans have been left stunned after spotting just how much Princess Charlotte takes after her father, Prince William.

The 10-year-old was pictured attending Sunday service at Crathie Kirk during the Wales family’s summer stay at Balmoral Castle and many couldn’t believe the uncanny resemblance between Charlotte and her father at the same age.

Seated just behind William in the family’s Range Rover, Charlotte looked sweet in a white cardigan layered over a polka-dot dress, her hair neatly tied back.

The resemblance to a young William was unmistakable, right down to her bright grin, expressive brows, and face shape.

Supporters quickly compared the images to throwback snaps of William go-karting at Buckmore Park in Kent back in 1992, when he too was 10. The similarities had fans buzzing online.

“Princess Charlotte is the absolute double of her father Prince William at the same age,” one royal watcher wrote on X.

Another chimed in: “She could be his clone,” while a third simply agreed, calling the likeness “absolutely” striking.

The service was very much a family affair, with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, as well as Princess Anne, joining the Waleses for the Bank Holiday outing.

The monarch, who began his annual Balmoral summer retreat last week, was seen traveling with his wife as other royals made their way to the traditional place of worship.

Prince William looked every inch the composed future king as he drove his family, dressed smartly in a suit and tie.

Beside him, Kate exuded elegance in a chic black hat adorned with a structured bow, a textured jacket, and a maroon blouse, flashing a warm smile through the car window.

Meanwhile, Charlotte peered out with a curious expression, her neatly tied-up hair keeping her look polished as she sat behind her parents.

The King and Queen, traveling separately, appeared more serious as they focused on the ride ahead.
