Expressing Context in Live Music — MIT Media Lab

From basements and living rooms, to bars and clubs, to stadiums and arenas, the spaces that become venues for music performances bring with them unique features that can present sound reinforcement challenges. This is especially the case with smaller, lower-budget community-run or pop-up performance spaces, which may display more non-ideal characteristics like a higher electrical noise floor or unique acoustics. Qualities like these, coupled with the people occupying the space, distinguish one performance context from another—to a band on a long tour or to an audience member attending many shows in the same city.

This thesis is structured around a series of live concerts using a digital audio processing system that captures, exaggerates, and reproduces unique acoustic qualities of the spaces where the concerts are taking place. This allows performers to exaggerate these qualities expressively by modulating their prominence with a MIDI controller.

The concerts feature performances by the author as well as local Boston-area musicians. They aim to encourage their participants, both musicians and audiences, to share a musical experience that fosters awareness of context, the here and now, and shows the significance (in music and beyond) of the places we occupy and the people we share them with.

PGA Tour Championship: Russell Henley leads – Scottie Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood and Robert McIntyre chasing

Two-time major winners Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas are also three shots adrift of Henley, along with Patrick Cantlay.

World number two Rory McIlroy was three under at the turn but lost momentum on the back nine.

The Northern Irishman made bogeys on the 14th and 17th to cancel out birdies on the 11th and 15th but allowed himself a smile after making a fortuitous birdie on the 18th.

The Masters champion completely misjudged a wedge out of the greenside bunker on the par-five, but his ball cannoned the stand at the back of the green and bounced back on to the putting surface. It left McIlroy a putt of 17 feet for a four and a round of 66 to leave him in a tie for eighth.

Englishman Justin Rose recovered from a error-strewn start to finish at one under having been three over at the start of the back nine.

Some 22 of the 30-man field walked back into the clubhouse under par. Six were on level par, and just two players, American Maverick McNealy and Austria’s Sepp Straka, were over par.

With the course having been subjected to heavy rain over recent days, the first round was played under preferred lies rules, allowing golfers to lift, clean and place balls in preferred spots if they landed on the fairway or other closely mown areas.

With more inclement weather forecast for Friday, second-round tee times have been moved to begin from 08:00 local time (13:00 BST).

  • Britney Spears Dances to Justin Timberlake Song on a Boat

Britney Spears Dances to Justin Timberlake Song on a Boat

Even Britney Spears likes to listen to a little bit of Justin Timberlake here and there.

In a video posted to the pop star’s Instagram on Wednesday, Spears enjoys a day on the water, wearing a green bikini while filming herself dancing on a boat. In the background, JT and Timbaland’s “Carry Out” plays.

Elsewhere in the clip, the Princess of Pop speaks in an unidentifiable accent while talking to the boat’s captain. “Me and this man are out here in this water!” she says excitedly, showing off her remote location for the camera. “Look at us! Sorry, I’m a nerd.”

Spears’ use of Timberlake’s 2009 hit — which reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 — is sure to turn heads, considering the two stars’ history. The pair dated from 1999 to 2002, and in her 2023 memoir, the “Toxic” singer shared a few unflattering revelations about her famous ex-boyfriend, including how he allegedly cheated on her during their relationship.

Even so, Spears has supported her ex’s music in the past. In 2024, she gushed that she was “so in love with Justin Timberlake’s new song ‘Selfish,’” and this past March, she shared a video of herself dancing by a fireplace to the former *NSYNC member’s “Señorita.”

The performer’s post comes a few weeks after Timberlake made headlines for revealing his Lyme disease diagnosis in a message to fans shared just after the close of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour.

“If you’ve experienced this disease or know someone who has — then you’re aware: living with this can be relentlessly debilitating, both mentally and physically,” he wrote at the time. “When I first got the diagnosis I was shocked for sure. But, at least I could understand why I would be onstage and in a massive amount of nerve pain or, just feeling crazy fatigue or sickness.”

Spears, on the other hand, has been having fun sharing bits of her life with followers on social media in recent months, including her hangouts with son Jayden.

CF Montréal acquire defender Bode Hidalgo from Real Salt Lake

    TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade

    • MTL receive: Bode Hidalgo
    • RSL receive: Up to $350k GAM, MLS SuperDraft pick, sell-on%

CF Montréal have acquired defender Bode Hidalgo from Real Salt Lake, the clubs announced Thursday.

In exchange for Hidalgo, RSL receive $200,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM) and Montréal’s second-round pick in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft. RSL could receive up to $150k in additional GAM if certain incentives are met. They also maintain a sell-on fee.

“We are pleased to welcome Bode to our organization,” said Luca Saputo, Montréal’s senior director of recruitment and sports methodology. “His profile and versatility provide us with additional options for our back line.”

Hidalgo has spent his entire professional career at RSL, originally signing as a homegrown player in 2021 after featuring extensively for affiliate side Real Monarchs. The 23-year-old has accrued 90 appearances across all competitions for the Claret-and-Cobalt, scoring one goal and recording four assists.

“We want to sincerely thank Bode for his commitment and contributions to our club,” said RSL sporting director Kurt Schmid. “From his early days in our academy to earning his place as a first-team contributor, Bode has grown tremendously as a player and as a professional.

“His hard work, dedication, and character have left a lasting impact on our organization, and we are proud of the role we played in his development. We wish him nothing but success in this next chapter of his career.”

Hidalgo joins Efraín Morales (trade from Atlanta United) and Matty Longstaff (trade from Toronto FC) as intra-league arrivals for Montréal during the MLS Secondary Transfer Window.

Meanwhile, Hidalgo departs RSL shortly after they acquired US international right back DeAndre Yedlin from FC Cincinnati.

Newly discovered origami patterns could inspire spacecraft design

Newly discovered origami designs that unfold in one singular motion could have practical uses in space technology.

Rather than unfolding in stages — each of which allows possible failure points — “bloom” origami patterns seamlessly expand from a flat disc to a larger three-dimensional shape resembling a flower, researchers at Brigham Young University in the US found. After deriving a mathematical explanation for the effect, they also found the principles held with materials of different thickness like plastic or acrylic.

Bloom patterns could prove useful in designing orbital structures like space telescopes or solar panels because they do not “necessarily have to do one thing after another” to achieve “maximum deployment,” thereby minimizing accidents, a materials expert told New Scientist.
