Prince Harry fuels rift with William, Kate despite King Charles peace deal

Prince Harry reignited his feud with Prince William and Princess Kate as peace talks began.

The Duke of Sussex has been accused of “upstaging” the Prince and Princess of Wales at a key royal event.

For the unversed, Harry wrote a secret letter on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, honouring his late grandfather, Prince Philip, and the Forgotten Army.

According to reports, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s father took his friend’s help, who quietly placed the letter and a wreath at the Burma Star Memorial after his father, King Charles, left.

Harry penned, “I am humbled by your example, proud of your service and dedication, and profoundly grateful for what you endured. Your story is part of our shared heritage, and it must never be forgotten. With the deepest respect, thank you.”

The Sun’s royal editor, Matt Wilkinson, called out the Duke for misusing an opportunity in the future King and Queen’s absence.

“A cynic might argue that Prince Harry maybe saw that as an opportunity to leave a letter there,” he said.

It is important to note that the Duke of Sussex seemingly upset the Waleses by grabbing their spot on VJ Day amid peace talks with King Charles.

‘These are the moments we live for’: Jason Iley & team Sony welcome Wolf Alice & The Clearing | Labels

On the day they release their first album for Columbia, Sony Music UK & Ireland chairman & CEO Jason Iley has described Wolf Alice as “one of the greatest bands of our lifetime”.

Speaking exclusively to Music Week for our September cover feature, which celebrates the long-awaited return of Wolf Alice, Iley expressed his delight that the major has signed the band.

“Columbia and Sony Music are lucky to be on this journey with them,” Iley told Music Week. “We are truly excited by The Clearing, it’s such a special record, and you can feel the band have pushed themselves creatively. I truly think it’s one of the best albums I have had the pleasure to work on in my many years of doing this job.”

In our cover feature, Iley recalled the first time he heard The Clearing, which follows their 2021 No.1 Blue Weekend, in a London studio with the band’s manager Stephen Taverner and Sony Music Group chairman Rob Stringer.

“I was lucky enough to hear the album with Rob and Tav last year, and I walked away from the studio feeling so very happy and thinking, ‘this is exactly why I love my job so much,’” he said. “Those are the moments we all live for, each track that was played got better and better.”

Iley said that Stringer “has been hugely instrumental in the whole process – he totally gets their vision and more than anything, is a huge fan”.

The executive said that Wolf Alice are a prime example of the UK business at its best.

“Sometimes people underestimate the influence and talent coming from the UK, and Wolf Alice are unquestionably one of the best bands the UK has ever produced,” he said.

He added that such acts are “at the heart of our business”.

“We want to ensure that we are signing the best artists in the world and Wolf Alice are unquestionably one of those artists,” Iley said. “We are delighted that they chose to sign with us. It’s not necessarily about who you’re signed to, it comes down to the team you have around you, and we have an excellent team of executives collaborating with them on a global scale to bring their vision to life.”

Columbia UK MD Amy Wheatley, opened up about the campaign, which has been packed ever since it began with lead single Bloom Baby Bloom, which gained the band their first Top 75 single. Yesterday, a London pop-up gave fans the chance to meet the band and hear the album, while they played a packed show at Dublin Castle in Camden last night. Further activations are taking place internationally too.

“It’s been a careful and thoughtful planning process with the band,” said Wheatley. “They are super creative and always open to ideas. A key element has been coordination across territories and collaboration with all the key stakeholders to ensure that we can deliver a joined up global campaign.”

“This is their fourth album and feels like their most ambitious yet,” she added. “This label has a long history with legendary artists and Wolf Alice are now at the forefront of the new Columbia legacy.”

Wolf Alice were signed with Dirty Hit for their first three albums, while RCA US licensed their releases for North America. The label’s SVP of A&R Dan Chertoff has been close to the band for their past campaigns.

Chertoff spoke to Music Week about how The Clearing, which was recorded with Greg Kurstin in LA, took shape.

“Ellie [Rowsell, singer and guitarist] and the band were focused on the songs having to stand up on their own, and each one had to work even in its most stripped-down form,” he said. “They were referencing great ’70’s records that were more natural and organic sounding and used fewer instruments to reinforce the songs. Ellie’s lyrics were, as usual, remarkable and her vocal performances on this record are on another level.”

Chertoff said Kurstin was “first on our list” and noted that the ways in which he was able to help them achieve their vision from demo stage to final recording was exceptional.

“He can work across multiple genres at the highest level and also understands band dynamics,” said Chertoff. “He understood every reference point and was able to push each one of them into some of the best performances of their career.”

Ellie is a special songwriter and an iconic frontwoman who is at the peak of her career

    Dan Chertoff, RCA US

On the subject of Wolf Alice’s evolution, Chertoff argued that “they’ve built their career the right way and have never skipped steps”.

“They have great chemistry as a band and have always been very ambitious,” he added. “They’ve continued to grow with each album, and I believe with The Clearing, they’ve made the best album of their career so far. Ellie is a special songwriter and an iconic frontwoman who is at the peak of her career.”

  • NAB Returns Money to Victims of Pakistan’s Largest Ponzi Scheme

NAB Returns Money to Victims of Pakistan’s Largest Ponzi Scheme

A special ceremony was organized by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Rawalpindi/Islamabad at NAB headquarters, Islamabad, on Thursday to distribute cheques of recovered funds to the victims of the B4U fraud.

The B4U fraud is one of Pakistan’s largest financial scams, operated as an online Ponzi scheme through shell companies by Saif-ur-Rehman and his associates. Billions of rupees were collected from the public with the promise of a 7% monthly return.

NAB initiated an inquiry into the matter on February 5, 2021, after receiving hundreds of complaints from victims and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). During the investigation, NAB traced and froze 56 bank accounts, properties, and other assets belonging to the accused. Online data was also downloaded and used to verify victims’ claims.

As a result of NAB’s persistent efforts and legal action, a recovery process for Rs. 7.3 billion was initiated. In the initial phase, Rs. 3.7 billion is being distributed among 17,500 affectees. Of these, 10,000 victims will receive their full amount, while the remaining 7,500 will receive 40% of their amount now, with the remaining 60% to be paid within six months after the disposal of the accused’s properties.

Addressing the ceremony, Chairman NAB reiterated the bureau’s priorities, which include focusing on cases affecting the public at large, recovering 100% of the looted amount from the accused, and returning it to the victims in the shortest possible time.

He also urged the public to exercise caution when investing their hard-earned money in various schemes and to conduct thorough inquiries before making investments.

The Chairman appreciated the efforts and hard work of the NAB Rawalpindi/Islamabad team, whose dedication made the recoveries and disbursement of funds possible despite various challenges in the B4U scam. As a token of appreciation, he announced an Umrah package as an incentive for the entire NAB Rawalpindi team.

It was further announced that, in the future, victims will no longer need to visit NAB offices to claim their compensation, as funds will be directly transferred to their bank accounts. This milestone reflects NAB’s commitment to protecting public interests, recovering looted funds, and restoring public trust.

Earlier, DG NAB (Rawalpindi/Islamabad) Waqar Ahmed Chohan highlighted the efforts of the concerned case officers and briefed the audience on the challenges faced during the recovery of the looted amount from the accused in the B4U scam.

The beneficiaries expressed deep satisfaction and gratitude for NAB’s efforts, stating that they had lost all hope of recovering their savings. They praised the relentless efforts of Chairman NAB, Lt. Gen. (R) Nazir Ahmed, and NAB officials, whose hard work made this recovery and distribution possible.

The ceremony was presided over by Chairman NAB, Lt. Gen. (R) Nazir Ahmed, and attended by Prosecutor General Accountability Syed Ihtesham Qadir Shah, Director Generals, senior NAB officers, and a large number of the general public and scam affectees.

Rupee falls 11 paise to 87.36 against US dollar as traders await Fed Chair Powell’s speech

The rupee slipped 11 paise to 87.36 against the US dollar amid rising dollar demand. Positive FII inflows and lower crude prices limited losses as traders awaited US Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks at the Jackson Hole Symposium.

    Updated On – 22 August 2025, 11:32 AM

Mumbai: The rupee declined 11 paise to 87.36 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday amid a rise in dollar demand.

However, positive FII inflows and a decline in crude oil prices prevented sharper losses in the local unit as traders awaited US Fed Chief Jerome Powell’s speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium later in the day, forex traders said.

The domestic unit opened at 87.37 against the US dollar and inched up to 87.36, down 11 paise from its previous close.

The rupee pared initial gains on Thursday to settle lower by 18 paise at 87.25 against the greenback.

“The rupee fell yesterday (Thursday) as importers and a big public sector bank bought dollars. Rupee was unable to pierce the support of 86.92 yesterday (Thursday) as dollar buying emerged on dips though FPIs were buyers of Indian equity,” Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said.

“Uncertainty on tariffs remained as we approach August 27, the day on which 25 per cent additional tariffs will be imposed by the US on Indian exports,” he said.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, gained 0.10 per cent to 98.72.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading 0.18 per cent down at USD 67.55 per barrel in futures trade.

“Brent oil prices were steady on Friday morning amid sustained risk aversion before more cues on US monetary policy from Fed Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Oil prices, however, headed for weekly gains amid increasing signs that peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine were stalling,” Bhansali added.

On the domestic equity market front, stock markets declined 262.05 points to 81,738.66 in early trade, while Nifty dropped 81.55 points to 25,002.20.

Foreign Institutional Investors purchased equities worth Rs 1,246.51 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data.

  • Why some people age faster. And the 400 genes behind it

Why some people age faster. And the 400 genes behind it

It’s a fact of life: Some people age better than others.

Some ease into their 90s with mind and body intact, while others battle diabetes, Alzheimer’s or mobility issues decades earlier. Some can withstand a bad fall or bout of the flu with ease, while others never leave the hospital again.

New University of Colorado Boulder-led research, published this month in the journal Nature Genetics, sheds light on why that is.

In it, an international team of co-authors identify more than 400 genes associated with accelerated aging across seven different sub-types. The study reveals that different groups of genes underlie different kinds of disordered aging, a.k.a. frailty, ranging from cognitive decline to mobility issues to social isolation.

The findings lend support to what is known as the “geroscience hypothesis” — the idea that to treat the multiple chronic illnesses that come with aging, we must treat aging itself.

“To be able to identify treatments to stop or reverse accelerated biological aging, you need to know what the underlying biology is,” said Isabelle Foote, first author on the paper and a postdoctoral researcher at CU’s Institute for Behavioral Genetics. “This is the largest study yet to use genetics to try to do that.”

    Redefining ‘frailty’

The study centers around “frailty,” a catch-all term for the “multisystem physiological decline” that often comes with aging.

More than 40% of U.S. adults over age 65 are considered frail.

Doctors typically assess frailty using a 30- point index that measures things like walking speed, grip strength, number of diagnosed illnesses and amount of social activity. The problem, said Foote, is that two people can get the same high frailty score even though one is cognitively sharp but can’t walk and another is in good physical health but has a poor memory.

This lack of distinction has made it hard for doctors to make recommendations and for scientists to pinpoint the underlying causes of unhealthy aging.

“Aging is not just one thing. There are many ways to be frail,” said Dr. Kenneth Rockwood, a leading expert in frailty, based at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada and co-author on the study. “The question then becomes: What genes are involved?”

To find out, the team conducted a “genome-wide association study” analyzing DNA and health information from hundreds of thousands of participants in the UK Biobank and other public datasets to see which genes were associated with 30 frailty symptoms.

They identified 408 genes associated with accelerated aging/frailty, a significant increase from the 37 genes previously identified.

Some genes, they found, were strongly linked to certain subtypes of unhealthy aging, including: “disability”; “poor cognition”; “metabolic problems”; “multiple diseases”; “generally unhealthy lifestyle”; and “limited social support.”

For instance, the SP1 gene, associated with immune function and Alzheimer’s disease was strongly associated with the broad “poor cognition” subtype, whereas the FTO gene, a gene known to be associated with obesity, seemed to underly several different categories of unhealthy aging.

“What this paper does is not only identify sub-facets of disordered aging but also demonstrate that there is very different biology underlying them,” said senior author Andrew Grotzinger, assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at CU Boulder. “The tangible next step is to figure out how to treat this underlying biology.”

    An anti-aging pill?

In the near term, the authors suggest that clinical measurements of frailty — which often shows up long before specific diseases — be expanded to include the six subtypes.

That way, someone diagnosed as cognitively frail could be guided toward therapies to prevent dementia, while someone frail in the metabolic domain might take steps to prevent diabetes or heart disease.

Foote envisions a day when people could get a “polygenic risk score” offering more detailed insight into what kind of unhealthy aging they are prone to.

But the holy grail, she says, would be to identify the molecular pathways that drive aging itself and develop therapies to put the brakes on.

Is a single anti-aging pill on the horizon?

    Not likely.

But could there one day be a pill to treat a package of age-related metabolic issues, and another to address numerous cognitive issues?

It’s a tantalizing idea, said Grotzinger.

“This paper suggests that it’s probably not going to be a single magic pill to address all the diseases that come with aging, but maybe it doesn’t need to be hundreds anymore.”
