Festival Begins, New Stage Built Post-Fire

Tomorrowland 2025 opened the entirety of its site to attendees earlier Friday (July 18) in Boom, Belgium, just two days after a fire destroyed the dance festival’s mainstage.

The development occurred after the festival announced Thursday (July 17) that it might either sequester a portion of its day one attendees to a stage in the festival’s camping area for sets by the Friday headliners, or open the entire site to all day one guests.

Workers on site at the event were able to clear the mainstage area and then construct a new stage setup to host the event’s headlining acts, which on Friday included Nervo, Axwell, Martin Garrix, Alok, Artbat & Kolsch and Meduza. As seen in the stream and photos shared by the festival on social media, the quickly constructed new mainstage is built from a DJ booth and a wall of LED panels, behind which the remains of the massive structure that burned are visible, along with heavy machinery.

The set-up can be seen in the event’s livestream, which is being broadcast from several of the festival’s roughly 16 stages. The mainstage lineup is available here and the rest of the performances are available here.

No one was injured in the fire, and its cause has not yet been announced.

The current situation at Tomorrowland is arguably the best possible outcome following the unprecedented fire. On Wednesday (July 16), the festival advised that there was a chance it might not open at all if the site was determined unsafe by the authorities, but that go-ahead came and the event managed to construct a new mainstage in time to open the entirety of the site.

In the hours before the festival opened for its first day on Friday, organizers posted a statement announcing, “Dear People of Tomorrow, WE ARE READY FOR YOU! Our teams are working day and night, with heart and soul, to turn the impossible into reality: Tomorrowland Belgium 2025 will open doors at 14:00. An alternative setup for the beloved Mainstage is planned to open at 16:00, pending any last-minute changes. All artists will perform as scheduled on all other stages as from 14:00. Tomorrowland will unite, stronger than ever!”

The first weekend of Tomorrowland 2025 continues until Sunday (July 20), while its second weekend is happening July 25-27.

Private equity giant Blackstone has withdrawn from a consortium seeking to invest in TikTok’s U.S. operations, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.

The latest change came as uncertainty has mounted and there have been several delays in the TikTok deal now at the center of U.S.-China trade talks.

Blackstone had planned to take a minority stake in the TikTok U.S. business in a deal orchestrated by President Donald Trump. The consortium is led by Susquehanna International Group and General Atlantic, current investors in TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance. The group hademerged as the front-runner to secure TikTok’s U.S. business in a deal under which U.S. investors would own 80% of TikTok, while ByteDance would retain a minority stake.

Blackstone declined to comment. TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The deadline for ByteDance to divest the popular social media app in the U.S. has been repeatedly postponed, creating uncertainty for investors.

Last month, Trump signed a third executive order extending the deadline for ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban, moving the cutoff to September 17. In April 2024, Congress passed a law mandating a sale or shutdown of TikTok by January 19, 2025.

Extensions to the deadline have drawn criticism from some lawmakers, who argue the Trump administration is “flouting the law” and ignoring national security concerns related to Chinese control over TikTok.

ByteDance is exploring various options to address these concerns, including selling or restructuring its U.S. operations. The Chinese social media giant, which raked in $43 billion in the first three months of this year, recently surpassed Meta in quarterly revenue, sources told Reuters.

The U.S. consortium, favored by the administration in any TikTok deal, also includes KKR, as well as new investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Reuters previously reported. Oracle is also likely to take a stake. It is unclear whether other bidders in the consortium are still involved.

A deal had been in the works this spring to spin off TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new U.S.-based firm. Talks were put on hold after China indicated it would not approve the transaction, following Trump’s announcement of steep tariffs on Chinese goods.

If a sale is finalized, the new U.S. app is expected to be owned by a joint venture formed by an American investor consortium and ByteDance, which would maintain a minority stake. TikTok is already working on a U.S.-specific app, sources told Reuters.

Blackstone’s exit highlights the complexities and uncertainties involved in the deal, as the ongoing talks over TikTok’s fate have now become part of Trump’s broader trade negotiations with China, and Trump said he would speak to President Xi Jinping about it.

PESHAWAR: Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are set to be held unopposed, as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has officially endorsed the list of candidates selected by party founder Imran Khan.

PTI’s political committee met on Friday and endorsed the same nominees previously proposed by the party’s parliamentary board.

The move clears the way for a smooth and unopposed election in the province, following a broader understanding reached between the provincial government and the opposition.

According to the official statement, PTI has fielded Murad Saeed, Faisal Javed, Mirza Khan Afridi, and Pir Noorul Haq Qadri for general seats.

Rubina Naz will contest the women’s seat, while Azam Khan Swati has been nominated for the technocrat slot. Mishaal Yousafzai will be the candidate for the seat left vacant by Sania Nishtar.

The committee also confirmed that dissenting PTI members who had initially filed nomination papers for the Senate elections agreed to withdraw.

Earlier in the day, the disgruntled candidates held two separate meetings with KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur but reportedly declined to step aside until a final decision came from the political committee.

Last week, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and opposition reached an agreement on holding uncontested Senate elections based on a 5/6 seat-sharing formula.

Under the deal, PTI will secure six seats while the opposition will take five.

With both sides now aligned and PTI’s internal disputes resolved, the province is set for a rare unopposed Senate election.

  • Apple Maps in iOS 26: Track Your Location History and Get Smarter Route Alerts

Apple Maps in iOS 26: Track Your Location History and Get Smarter Route Alerts

The Apple Maps app in iOS 26 includes some useful new features for keeping track of where you’ve been and getting alerts if there are any delays that will impact your daily commute. In this guide, we’ve rounded up a list of everything new with Maps.

    Visited Places

‌Apple Maps‌ is able to keep track of the places that you’ve visited, either in your hometown or while traveling. It can track the restaurants, shops, parks, and landmarks that you go to, so you can look back and remember where you’ve been.

ios 26 visited placesios 26 visited places
Google has long offered a timeline that automatically saves visits to places, and Apple’s new Visited Places option matches the functionality available in the Google Maps Timeline.

After you upgrade to ‌iOS 26‌, the Maps app pops up an alert letting you know about the new feature, so that you can opt in or opt out.

You can see your Visited Places by opening up the Maps app, tapping on your profile picture, tapping on Places, and then tapping into Visited Places. In this interface, the locations that you’ve visited are listed by month, plus there’s a search option.

There are options to change how long visits are kept (three months, one year, and forever), and to clear your current history. You can also remove locations one-by-one by tapping on them, and report incorrect location readings. When you clear your history, ‌Apple Maps‌ pops up an option that lets you clear everything or clear everything and turn off Visited Places entirely.

ios 26 maps app visited places overviewios 26 maps app visited places overview
If you want to turn Visited Places off or enable it at a later date, you can do so by going to Settings > Apps > Maps > Location. From there, toggle off Visited Places. You can also access the toggle by going to Privacy and Security > Location Services > Maps.

Precise Location needs to be toggled on for Visited Places to work, and places that you’ve been are stored on-device. The information is not uploaded to Apple’s servers.

    Preferred Routes

Using on-device intelligence, ‌Apple Maps‌ is able to learn the routes that you prefer to take to locations that you visit frequently, such as work, home, and school, and it keeps track of when you typically visit those places.

ios 26 maps app preferred routeios 26 maps app preferred route
If there’s a road closure or traffic that’s going to impact your commute, the Maps app is able to alert you about the issue and offer up an alternative route so you can get there on time.

A Maps Suggestions Home Screen widget shows the same information if there are any route issues. This is an under-the-hood feature that only shows up when it’s needed, so if you have a short commute that doesn’t involve roads that frequently see traffic, you might not have it pop up.

You can turn it on or off by going to Settings > Maps > Location and toggling off the “Preferred Routes and Predicted Destinations” setting.

    Liquid Glass Redesign

The Maps app has adopted Apple’s Liquid Glass redesign, and it brings some subtle interface changes. The search bar and navigation menu are translucent so you can see some of the Maps background behind it, and place icons are larger than before.

ios 26 maps app interfaceios 26 maps app interface
Icons have the layered glass look, and the various menus, cards, and buttons are more rounded than before. The Share Sheet has a popover design and it too is transparent.

The Library tab that was accessible when you tap your profile picture is now called Places, and it has improved spacing and a new Visited Places section.

Turn-by-turn directions are in a smaller pop-up bar rather than taking up the top of the Maps display, and time of arrival, length of travel, and distance are shown more prominently.

    Voice Controls

The Voice Volume section in the Maps app is now Voice Controls, and there are added toggles for Muted, Alerts Only, or Unmuted so adjusting how turn-by-turn directions are communicated is more intuitive.

ios 26 maps voice controlios 26 maps voice control
These controls did exist in iOS 18, but only as toggles that had no explanation on the right side of the display when turn-by-turn directions are in progress.

    Place Information

When you tap into or type a location on the Maps app, the Call, Menu, and Website buttons are now more prominently listed at the top of the interface, as are the location’s hours and the order option if one is available. There’s now a floating button to get directions to a place, and it’s always available at the bottom right of the app.

    Improved Incident Reports

It’s easier to report an incident like a crash with a new incident button that’s located on the right side of the iPhone when getting turn-by-turn directions, and more incident types have been added.

ios 26 maps report incidentios 26 maps report incident
You can report a crash, speed check, traffic, roadwork, hazard, or road closure. In ‌iOS 18‌, options are limited to crash, speed check, and hazard.

  • Kate Beckinsale’s mother Judy Loe dies: ‘My dearest friend’

Kate Beckinsale’s mother Judy Loe dies: ‘My dearest friend’

Actor Kate Beckinsale is mourning the loss of her “dearest friend,” her mother British actor Judy Loe.

The “Underworld” star announced Thursday that her mother died Tuesday evening, writing in an emotional Instagram post that Loe died “in my arms after immeasurable suffering.”

Though Beckinsale in her post did not disclose a cause of death, she announced last year that her mother had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Loe was 78.

The “Pearl Harbor” actor, 51, said she felt compelled to announce her mother’s death because she had to register the “Space Island One” actor’s death certificate. She shared a carousel of photos and videos of her mother from over the years, including snaps of Loe in her youth and with granddaughter Lily Mo Sheen, whom Beckinsale shares with ex Michael Sheen.

“I am paralysed,” Beckinsale wrote in her caption. “Jude was the compass of my life, the love of my life, my dearest friend.”

Loe, born March 6, 1947, in Manchester, enjoyed a versatile career that began in the 1970s and earned her dozens of credits, mostly on British TV series. She broke out on the ITV fantasy series “Ace of Wands” in 1970s and went on to appear in numerous other programs for the network including “The Chief,” “Crown Court,” “Let There Be Love” and “Goodnight and God Bless.”

Throughout her career — her most recent credit was a minor role in the TV miniseries “Fool Me Once” in 2024 — Loe took on a variety of roles ranging from a magician’s assistant in “Ace of Wands” to a much sought-after divorcée in “Singles” to a spacecraft commander in “Space Island One.”

Prior to taking on screen roles, Loe pursued a career on the stage, including repertory theater in northern England’s Crewe, where in 1968 she met fellow actor Richard Beckinsale, whom she would marry in 1977. Though they split after two years of marriage, they welcomed daughter Kate in 1973. Richard Beckinsale died at age 31 from a heart attack.

Loe remarried in 1997 to television director Roy Battersby, who died in January 2024 after a brief illness. He was 87.

In her announcement, Kate Beckinsale praised her mother for her legacy, “huge heart” and courage in the final year of her life.

Beckinsale continued: “She has been brave in so many ways, forgiving sometimes too much, believing in the ultimate good in people and the world is so dim without her that it is nearly impossible to bear.”

Loe is survived by six stepchildren in addition to her daughter, according to the Guardian.
