Pakistan awards UAE naval chief top military honor amid deepening defense ties

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday conferred its prestigious Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) on UAE naval chief Major General Humaid Abdulla Alremeithi, highlighting the close defense partnership between the two countries as the commander met senior civilian and military leaders in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The UAE naval chief was bestowed with the award by Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari at a special investiture ceremony in Islamabad, according to the president’s office.

Later, Maj. Gen. Alremeithi met with the president, who said the award was a recognition of his outstanding services, while his visit reflected the enduring fraternal ties between Pakistan and the UAE.

“The President underscored that Pakistan and the UAE enjoy extraordinary and exemplary relations, rooted in history and strengthened by enduring people-to-people bonds,” the Pakistan president’s office said in a statement.

“He reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to continue working closely with the UAE to further strengthen these brotherly ties.”

Pakistan and the UAE have strong defense, trade, cultural and brotherly relations, with both countries regularly participating in joint military exercises to strengthen their joint operability.

Highlighting the strong defense and security partnership between Pakistan and the UAE, the President expressed satisfaction over the active participation of the UAE Navy in Aman Dialogue-25 and Exercise Aman-25 in Feb. this year, according to the statement.

He appreciated the confidence the UAE Navy has placed in the professional expertise of Pakistan Navy and assured that Pakistan Navy remains ready to support the UAE Navy’s manpower requirements in the future as well, emphasizing the importance of further enhancing collaboration between the two naval forces.

Commander Alremeithi said he had close ties with Pakistan, having spent four years in the country while graduating from the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi, the Pakistan presidency said.

Separately, the UAE naval chief met with Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Sahir Shamshad Mirza and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistani military’s media wing.

The two dignitaries held in-depth discussions on professional matters, reviewing the evolving global and regional geo-strategic environment, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Pakistani military’s media wing.

The meetings focused on professional matters, evolving global and regional geo-strategic environment. In his meeting with the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) chief, both sides explored fresh avenues of engagement through joint training initiatives and deeper military-to-military cooperation.

“The visiting dignitary expressed the earnest desire of the UAE Armed Forces to draw from the Pakistan Air Force’s rich operational experience in multi-domain warfare,” the ISPR said. “He underscored that PAF’s tested operational framework and combat-proven doctrine remain invaluable for regional and international partners alike.”

The development follows a four-day Pakistan-India military standoff in May, during which officials said the PAF successfully conducted multi-domain operations to down six Indian fighter jets, including the French-made Rafale jets. While India has acknowledged losses in the air, it has not specified the number of aircraft lost.

The hour-long India-Pakistan fight, which took place in darkness, involved some 110 aircraft, experts estimate, making it the world’s largest air battle in decades.

Pakistan’s Chines-made J-10s shot down at least one Rafale, Reuters reported in May, citing US officials. Its downing surprised many in the military community and raised questions about the effectiveness of Western military hardware against untested Chinese alternatives.

“Commander of the UAE Naval Forces further conveyed UAE’s keen interest in conducting joint exercises with PAF, highlighting the immense value of mutual learning, operational synergy and enhanced interoperability,” the ISPR said.

“He also shared that the UAE Air Force is eager to participate in joint training initiatives in Pakistan, an undertaking he described as a vital cornerstone in further cementing the brotherly relations between the two nations.”

Mohammed Siraj’s England heroics make him favourite for..

The International Cricket Council announced the nominees for the ICC Player of the Month for August 2025 on September 8, and this time, fast bowlers dominated the chart. The shortlist includes three fast bowlers, including India’s Mohammed Siraj, nominated for the honor.

Apart from Mohammed Siraj, New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry and West Indies pacer Jayden Seales have also been shortlisted for the ICC Player of the Month for August 2025 for their impressive performances during the month.

Mohammed Siraj’s heroics in England secure ICC Player of the Month nomination

Mohammed Siraj played only one Test match in August, but his performance was outstanding. The Indian pacer impressed one and all with his remarkable performance in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at The Oval.

Mohammed Siraj scalped nine wickets in the final Test at an average of 21.11. With India’s premier pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah rested, Siraj took charge and bowled over 46 overs across both innings. He picked four wickets in the first innings and five in the second and helped India secure a 2-2 series draw.

Siraj had shown the nerves of steel and scalped the three wickets on the final day to play a crucial role in India’s memorable six-run triumph at The Oval. Mohammed Siraj’s match-winning efforts against England in the final Test earned him the Player of the Match award last month.

Matt Henry’s masterclass leads New Zealand to 2-0 series sweep over Zimbabwe

The second nominee is Matt Henry, who was the key player in New Zealand’s 2-0 Test series win over Zimbabwe. Henry took 16 wickets in two Test matches at an average of just 9.12.

In the first Test, the New Zealand fast bowler took six wickets in the first innings and three more in the second essay. Matt finished the first test with impressive figures of 9/90 and went on to win the Player of the Match award.

He continued his stunning form in the second Test, where he scalped five wickets in the first innings and two more in the second, and helped New Zealand to beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 359 runs in August 2025.

Jayden Seales ends Pakistan’s ODI dominance with sensational spell

The final nominee is the West Indies pacer Jayden Seales. He was an X-factor in the West Indies’ historic ODI series win over Pakistan, which was their first in 34 years. Seales took 10 wickets in three matches at an average of 10 and an economy of 4.10 to help the West Indies script the history.

After a not-so-impressive start in the first ODI match, where he took one wicket for 59 runs, Seales bounced back in the second match by taking three wickets in seven overs, including the big wickets of Babar Azam and Saim Ayub. Seales delivered his best performance in the third ODI.

Seales claimed 6 wickets for just 18 runs—the third-best figures by a West Indies bowler in ODI history—and helped the Men in Maroon to beat Pakistan by 200 runs to clinch the series 2-1.

  • ICC WCA headed towards potential dispute over player image rights for mobile game

ICC WCA headed towards potential dispute over player image rights for mobile game

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the World Cricketers Association (WCA) are set for a potential dispute over player image rights in the fast-growing mobile gaming space. The dispute came forward following ICC’s plan to launch its own mobile cricket game, a project intended to generate fresh revenue amid concerns of falling broadcast values in the next media cycle. While the idea taps into an industry, India’s mobile gaming market alone was valued at around USD 3 billion in 2024, the execution has sparked controversy.

The WCA, representing nearly 600 international players from 15 of the top 20 cricket nations, accuses the ICC and some member boards of attempting to control player name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights over what was contractually agreed. This disagreement is not just about a mobile game but about who controls players’ commercial identities and how they are compensated in an increasingly digital sporting economy.

The ICC introduced its gaming plans to members in April 2025, followed by discussions at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Singapore in July. According to reports, some member boards favored negotiating directly with their contracted players over NIL rights, rather than going through the WCA. For the players’ body, this was a breach of a binding agreement with the ICC, one that grants the WCA authority to manage global licensing deals for image rights.

WCA CEO Tom Moffat was direct in his communication with players, warning them not to engage with boards or the ICC on NIL rights. According to him, the governing body’s approach appears to be a direct attack on players, bringing up past disputes such as the 2021 NFT controversy and the disagreements during the 2024 T20 World Cup over licensing terms.

For the ICC, the mobile game is a planned revenue stream in anticipation of declining broadcast income between 2028 to 2031. The council has already shortlisted potential developers and brought in consultants like A&W Capital to design financial and distribution models. ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta has described gaming as an industry bigger than the movies.

On the other hand, the WCA has already placed itself in the gaming sector, signing licensing deals with firms like Real Cricket in 2024. Through these partnerships, players are already receiving royalties, making the ICC’s attempt to bypass the WCA not just a contractual issue but also a challenge to existing commercial structures.

  • Crypto Asset Manager CoinShares in U.S. SPAC Deal

Crypto Asset Manager CoinShares in U.S. SPAC Deal

CoinShares, one of Europe’s largest digital asset managers, is heading to Wall Street. The company announced Monday that it will go public in the United States through a $1.2 billion merger with Vine Hill Capital Investment Corp (VCIC)., a Nasdaq-listed SPAC.

The deal shifts CoinShares’ listing from Stockholm to New York, opening access to U.S. capital markets and investors. The firm manages about $10 billion in assets, including a suite of 32 crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) covering bitcoin, ether, solana and other tokens. CoinShares ranks as the fourth-largest global provider of digital asset ETPs, behind BlackRock, Grayscale and Fidelity, and holds a 34% share of the European, Middle Eastern and African market.

Chief Executive Jean-Marie Mognetti said the move reflects a turning point for digital assets as U.S. regulation provides more clarity. “The case for digital assets as an investment class has reached a decisive inflection point,” he said. “A U.S. listing will reinforce our credibility and expand our reach.”

For U.S. investors, the transaction could mean greater access to crypto-linked products from a manager that has grown assets more than 200% over the last two years. CoinShares reported a 76% adjusted EBITDA margin in the first half of 2025, signaling strong profitability compared with peers.

The deal, approved by both companies’ boards, is expected to close by the end of 2025 pending regulatory and shareholder approvals. If completed, CoinShares will trade on Nasdaq under a new parent company, Odysseus Holdings Limited.
