Judiciary, rights bodies liaison must to ensure justice: CJP – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Yahya Afridi has said collaboration between the judiciary and human rights bodies was vital to ensure access to justice for all, especially the vulnerable and marginalised segments of society.

The CJP made these remarks in a meeting with the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) chairman, Rabiya Javeri Agha, on Thursday.

The meeting discussed initiatives for the protection and promotion of human rights, according to an official statement.

CJP Afridi appreciated the NCHR for its efforts to address rights-based challenges.

IFJ asks apex court to review Peca, directs govt to amend it

Ms Agha briefed the CJP on NCHR’s ongoing initiatives, policy interventions and monitoring mechanisms related to the implementation of constitutional and legal safeguards for fundamental rights.

They reaffirmed the need for coordination among state institutions to address systemic gaps in the human rights protection framework.

The CJP emphasised the judiciary’s commitment to upholding constitutional values, due process, and the protection of citizens’ fundamental freedoms.

The meeting ended with a “shared resolve to work collectively for a more just, inclusive and rights-respecting society,” the official statement added.

    Peca review

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) secretary general, Anthony Bellanger, has requested the Supreme Court to review the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) as a matter of priority and provide necessary directions to the government to amend the law.

In his letter addressing the CJP, Mr Bellanger said “swift action” was needed to “address this critical situation for Pakistan’s media and pro-tect press freedom as guaranteed in Article 19 of Pakistan’s constitution”.

The letter was delivered to the apex court on Thursday by Shakeel Ahmad, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) secretary general.

The letter stated the increased political polarisation, widespread protests and social disruption meant media professionals across Pakistan were “facing increased challenges while performing their duties”.

They are also facing a “heightened level of legal persecution including litigation, intimidation and cases filed under Peca”.

“We understand that Pakistan is a signatory of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and United Nations Conventions that confer freedom of speech and expression and key democratic rights, but the curtailing of these fundamental rights under Peca is of great concern for the IFJ and international journalist community,” the letter explained.

  • ‘Rental Family’ & ‘Psycho Killer’ Set Release Dates With Disney

‘Rental Family’ & ‘Psycho Killer’ Set Release Dates With Disney

Disney has shared its latest release schedule, which includes two of its hotly anticipated motion pictures.

On Thursday, Walt Disney Studios announced that Searchlight Pictures‘ Rental Family will premiere November 21, while 20th Century Fox‘s Psycho Killer will debut on February 20, 2026.

Rental Family, which filmed last spring in Japan, stars Brendan Fraser as a lonely, down-and-out American actor living in Tokyo. He starts working for a Japanese “rental family” company to play various stand-in roles in other people’s lives. Along the way, he forges some surprising human connections and discovers unexpected joys within his built-in family.

Marking Fraser’s first starring role since his Oscar-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale (2022), the actor said at Deadline’s Red Sea Studio, “I couldn’t resist making this film for the opportunity to work there and to also blaze a trail. I think more and more productions are likely going start working their way towards shooting in Japan, considering there’s the production value.”

Directed by Hikari from a script she wrote with Stephen Blahut, Rental Family also stars Mari Yamamoto.

In Psycho Killer, written by Andrew Kevin Walker and directed by Gavin Polone, police officer Jane Thorne (Georgina Campbell) makes it her mission to take down a serial killer referred to on the news as the ‘Satanic Slasher’, following the murder of her state trooper husband (Logan Miller).

The horror-thriller that filmed in 2023 also stars James Preston Rogers.

Slovakia festival hosting Kanye West cancelled after thousands sign petition condemning Heil Hitler rapper | Kanye West

The Slovakia festival due to welcome Kanye West next week has been called off after the uproar over the US rapper’s May release of a song glorifying the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Before the 20 July gig was cancelled, Bratislava’s Rubicon hip-hop festival was set to be West’s only confirmed live performance in Europe this year.

Though he has won 24 Grammy awards over the course of his career, the erratic rapper has become notorious for his increasingly antisemitic and hate-filled rants.

West, who has legally changed his name to the shorthand Ye, released the song Heil Hitler on 8 May, the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in the second world war. The track ends with a sample of a speech given by Adolf Hitler in 1935 in the original German, which ends with the Nazi leader calling for supporters to “stand up for me like I have stood up for you”.

The song was banned in Germany on the grounds of its extremist symbolism under hate speech laws and was removed from most mainstream streaming platforms, but proliferated and found support on Elon Musk’s X.

In the wake of the announcement of West’s appearance at Rubicon, thousands of people signed a petition against the gig, calling it “an insult to historic memory, a glorification of wartime violence and debasement of all victims of the Nazi regime”.

During the second world war, more than 70,000 Slovak Jews were put in concentration camps, turned over to German authorities and murdered.

West – a vocal supporter of the US president, Donald Trump – is “repeatedly and openly adhering to symbols and ideology connected with the darkest period of modern global history”, two groups behind the petition said.

In a statement on Instagram late on Wednesday, Rubicon organisers said the decision to cancel the event was “due to media pressure and the withdrawal of several artists and partners”.

“This was not an easy decision,” they said, without drawing a direct line between the rapper’s planned appearance and the cancellations.

Styling itself as the central European country’s premier hip-hop hang-out, the Rubicon festival was to run from 18 to 20 July. The US rappers Offset and Sheck Wes were to share top billing with West.

This month it was revealed that Australia cancelled West’s visa over Heil Hitler, in which West raps about his custody battle with his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. West’s current wife, Bianca Censori, is Australian.

  • How Gabi Taylor’s art found its place on Wimbledon’s Hill

How Gabi Taylor’s art found its place on Wimbledon’s Hill

WIMBLEDON — For the past decade, the Pimm’s On The Hill bar has been a hub of revelry for the fans who’ve turned the grassy slope to the north of No. 1 Court into a Wimbledon institution. The Hill — formerly known as Aorangi Terrace, it’s also gone by Henman Hill and Murray Mound in its time — is a casual, sometimes rambunctious place where fans can let it all out in front of two big screens, the opposite to the rather prim atmosphere on the show courts themselves.

This year, the bar has had a makeover. It’s decorated by an abstract rendering of The Hill, all fiery oranges and lush greens — a collaboration with artist Gabi Taylor. For Southampton-born Taylor, 27, the commission was a “full-circle moment.”

Seven years ago, Taylor thought that Wimbledon might be the site of her first career breakthrough. She was a promising British player who’d received a main-draw wild card, and on her debut in 2018, she fell in three sets to former finalist Eugenie Bouchard. That year, she reached No. 162 in the WTA rankings.

But Taylor gradually fell out of love with professional tennis and a lifestyle that took its toll on her mental health over the next few years. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, she stepped away from the circuit — and never came back.

On another baking day in the shadow of No. 1 Court, Taylor explains how her route out of tennis ended up leading her back to it.

“Tennis was always my priority one,” she said. “When I decided to stop due to personal reasons, I found therapy in art. I started in 2020 — I just picked up the brush and decided to give it a shot, and I just fell in love with it. It became a passion of mine. I could really bring out my creativity, which is something I didn’t really know I had until lockdown. And since then I’ve been sort of teaching myself. It’s been quite a journey, because I’ve learned everything from scratch — and I’m still learning.”

Taylor has never had formal art lessons, though she’s inspired by everything from abstract expressionism to unknown Instagram creators she thinks have “huge potential,” citing Pie Herring as an example. Nonetheless, with her tennis career behind her, she took the leap to turn her burgeoning portfolio into a small business.

Her connections in the tennis world provided her with a starter client base. In 2023, she completed her first dog portrait for Jack Draper, now the ATP No. 4, depicting his labradoodle Ozzy with a top hat and cigar. Taylor’s paintings and commissions got bigger — but despite making a success of her new career, she had still transitioned from being an independent worker in one expensive, competitive and precarious career into another.

“It’s connected to tennis as well,” she said. “Financially it can be a burden on you. And it is a struggle to go full time in something unless you’re consistent with it. And with art, it’s obviously very difficult to find that consistency.”

Fast forward to 2025. Even now, Taylor’s art isn’t her only venture — she’s also started to dip her toe into working as a tennis agent, with Julian Cash — who has reached this year’s Wimbledon men’s doubles final — as one of her clients. But the approach from Pimm’s was “probably the biggest commission I’ve ever done.” In other words, Wimbledon could once more be the site of a career breakthrough for Taylor.

For the painting itself, Taylor aimed to capture the essence of The Hill: “Abstract elements, wildness and colors, vibrant colors,” she said. For a line of bespoke limited edition glassware, she had to deviate from her usual style, instead painting a series of individual designs on canvas that were then printed on to the glasses themselves. The results, she says, have blown her away.

“If someone told me about this three years ago, I would have been like, ‘You’re absolutely joking me. That’s not going to happen,’” she said. “It’s hard to believe I’ve been able to create something like that. Before the event started I saw it, just the artwork itself, no people around. That was kind of a wow moment. And it was even more of a wow moment when I saw so many people sitting in front of it or even taking photos of it.”

The art world and the tennis world have not traditionally overlapped much. That’s changing. Former World No. 1 Venus Williams often speaks about her passion for art. In 2023, Robert Pruitt’s portrait of Venus and sister Serena was exhibited at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

ATP pro Reilly Opelka is sponsored by the Tim Van Laere Gallery, which has outlets in Antwerp and Rome and frequently shows tennis-themed artworks. And players such as Amanda Anisimova and Kaja Juvan have both found in their spells off tour that art can be a valuable outlet.

Taylor isn’t surprised that the two worlds are aligning more and more. Tennis’s place in the cultural consciousness isn’t just because of the purely athletic feats of its players, but the aesthetic of the whole world — from the geometric lines of the court to the flair with which the sport is played.

“I’ve often heard it said that tennis is one of the more artistic sports,” she said. “It’s how you play it — there’s so much passion. It’s just you, the ball and the court, basically. And when it comes to artwork, it’s just you, the brush and the canvas. You’re there to experiment and self-explore, and it’s the same with tennis.

“And I know that when I think of tennis, there’s a lot of movement. It’s like when you’re painting on the canvas, there’s also movement. There’s always this flow to it. I think of a shot as a brush stroke, in a sense.”

But as someone for whom art provided a way out of tennis, Taylor also thinks that the differences between the two endeavors provide an important potential connection. As she’s entered the art world, she’s found that the people she encounters might be “a little crazy” — but they’re also a great deal more relaxed than anyone in the tennis world, where focus and discipline are the order of the day, every day.

“The structure in their lives is very different to that of an artist,” she said. “From an artist’s perspective, you could for a few days without even being able to produce any artwork. But everything is within yourself, in your mind. You’re constantly thinking and trying to create ideas in your head.”

Taylor found that being able to express herself on canvas provided an outlet she hadn’t found in tennis, with its emphasis on keeping emotions on the inside.

“You get to understand another side of yourself,” she said. “A side that maybe with tennis you can’t find. So much of tennis is about keeping it in. With art, it’s about getting it out there. I think a lot of people need to be more comfortable getting their creativity out there and being themselves, even if that’s just splashing paint or whatever.

“I do recommend that tennis players, in their free time, do something where they can just express themselves and go wild.”

On returning to Wimbledon in her second capacity, Taylor found she had no regrets at all about her first career. In fact, she was most struck by how much she didn’t remember: when she walked around the grounds in 2018, she had been so focused on her matches and practises that she hadn’t really observed what was around her.

“When I come back here, I’m like — ah!” she said. “It’s really opened my eyes up to what other possibilities are out there.”

  • Ye’s ex-assistant details alleged sex trafficking, assault, stalking

Ye’s ex-assistant details alleged sex trafficking, assault, stalking

Ye, the vitriolic rapper formerly known as Kanye West, is facing a new round of controversy involving fresh allegations from an ex-assistant including sex trafficking, sexual harassment, stalking and sexual battery.

Ye’s accuser, former Yeezy employee Lauren Pisciotta, has taken more legal action against the Grammy-winning “All of the Lights” musician a year after she sued him for sexual harassment and breach of contract, among other counts, in June 2024. In an amended complaint filed Tuesday in Los Angeles, Pisciotta claims the rapper forced her to perform oral sex on him, sexually assaulted her numerous times during her Yeezy employment and engaged in sexual activity with employees at his Yeezy offices. Pisciotta also accuses the rapper of stalking her after she filed her initial lawsuit.

Legal representatives for Ye and his Yeezy brands did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for comment Thursday.

Pisciotta’s 37-page complaint, reviewed by The Times, doubles down on claims from her June 2024 suit but also details sexual assaults that allegedly occurred at a San Francisco hotel shortly after Ye hired Pisciotta in 2021 to help with the creation of his album “Donda.”

“For almost two years Ms. Pisciotta dedicated her life to Ye under the pretense that he would present her with pivotal opportunities in the music and fashion industries at an even larger scale than any of her previous work,” the lawsuit said. “Despite Ms. Pisciotta’s unwavering dedication to her job, Ye continued to sexually harass her at every opportunity.”

Pisciotta alleges that during her time working with Ye in San Francisco, he forcefully kissed her on the mouth, forcibly touched her genitals with one hand while stroking himself with the other, exposed himself and “forced his penis into her mouth,” according to legal documents.

Ye allegedly sexually assaulted Pisciotta another time, in October 2023, according to legal documents, when they were en route to Paris from Los Angeles. The 48-year-old rapper requested Pisciotta come to his private room on his plane and demanded she give him a hug. She refused, but Ye said he needed to speak with her and locked her in the room, where he allegedly “retreated to his bed and began to masturbate.” Pisciotta claims she was “forced” to remain in the room until someone opened the door from the outside.

Resources for survivors of sexual assault

If you or someone you know is the victim of sexual violence, you can find support using RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline. Call (800) 656-HOPE or visit online.rainn.org to speak with a trained support specialist.

The complaint also paints a disturbing picture of the inner workings and culture of the Yeezy offices, alleging Ye verbally abused Pisciotta, often used “derogatory, antisemitic slurs” and “demanded assistants and other employees draw swastikas in the workplace.” Earlier this year, Ye came under fire for placing a TV ad during the Super Bowl for a website selling a T-shirt emblazoned with the hate symbol.

Additionally, “Ye openly performed sexual acts with women at the Yeezy office,” the complaint said, adding that one of the women was his current wife, Bianca Censori. Pisciotta’s complaint also repeated previous allegations that Ye constantly messaged her about his sexual fantasies involving her, sending sexually explicit videos, photos and memes.

Ye, who in recent years has used his social media pages to spew hate including antisemitic rants, posted on X earlier this year about his inappropriate workplace practices in numerous lewd posts mentioned in the complaint.

“Life is about using your position to f— the baddest b— possible,” he said in one post.

Other since-deleted posts from Ye include “I’m a walking me too,” referring to the watershed #MeToo movement, and “I’m a big time perv.” The complaint also includes posts where Ye uses misogynistic language and homophobic slurs, and claims there is a difference between “me too rapes” and “real rape.”

Though the complaint mainly concerns incidents that allegedly occurred during Pisciotta’s Yeezy tenure, she said the rapper admitted to assaulting her in 2015 during a studio recording session in Santa Monica.

Pisciotta alleged that West’s disturbing behavior did not end after she was terminated at Yeezy. She claims the rapper grabbed her by the throat and stuck his tongue in her ear when they saw each other at a concert in November 2022. He also allegedly moved into the same apartment complex as Pisciotta, prompting her to move out of state.

After moving to Florida, Pisciotta claims Ye arranged a “swatting” event at her home days after she filed her initial lawsuit. Swatting is a hoax 911 report made in the hope of generating a large law enforcement response. Pisciotta said officers arrived at her home to investigate reports of child abuse and murder. Pisciotta said she had “also experienced a barrage of service workers such as plumbers and food delivery workers showing up to her door unannounced.”

She further alleges she has received calls from people warning her not to pursue further legal action against Ye.

Pisciotta is also suing for counts of assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and other charges. She demands an unspecified amount in damages and wants a jury trial.

  • Former NCT K-Pop star Taeil sentenced to three years for rape

Former NCT K-Pop star Taeil sentenced to three years for rape

South Korean singer Taeil is facing the music for the sex crime that prompted his departure last year from popular K-Pop group NCT.

A Seoul Central District Court on Thursday sentenced the 31-year-old musician, born Moon Tae-il, to 3½ years in prison for raping an intoxicated Chinese woman who visited South Korea in 2024, according to numerous outlets. Taeil was sentenced a month after he and two other men, who also engaged in the assault, pleaded guilty in June to charges of special quasi-rape.

The Korea Herald reported on Thursday the three men were taken into custody after the ruling and were each ordered to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program. Prosecutors initially sought a seven-year sentence for each of the men, but the court took into account that they were first-time offenders and halved their sentences.

SM Entertainment, the agency representing NCT and its subgroups, announced in August 2024 that it would part ways with Taeil after confirming he “has been accused of a criminal case related to sex crimes.” At the time, SM Entertainment did not disclose additional information but wrote in its statement, “We recognized the seriousness of the issue, and we have decided that Taeil can no longer continue team activities.”

“We have discussed this matter with Taeil, and it has been decided that he will leave the group,” the K-Pop giant added at the time, noting that the singer was “faithfully working on the police investigation.” SM also apologized for “the controversy caused by our artist.”

Taeil and the two other men — identified by prosecutors by surnames Lee and Hong — met the woman in June 2024 at a bar in the Itaewon district of Seoul, and the four drank together.

The tourist became heavily intoxicated, according to the Herald, and the singer allegedly helped her into a taxi with Lee who took her home. Taeil and Hong followed them separately and raped the woman at Lee’s home.

“The defendants took turns committing sexual acts against the victim, who was severely intoxicated and unable to resist. The nature of the crime is particularly grave,” prosecutors reportedly said. “As a foreign tourist assaulted in an unfamiliar environment, the victim likely experienced significant psychological distress.”

Taeil debuted with NCT, or Neo Culture Technology, in 2016 and was most recently active with sub-group NCT 127 prior to his removal.

The Associated Press and former Times staff writer Nardine Saad contributed to this report.

  • Pasta gets a protein upgrade with eco-friendly cricket flour

Pasta gets a protein upgrade with eco-friendly cricket flour

Discover how a small addition of cricket flour can turn everyday pasta into a powerhouse of nutrition, combining eco-friendly protein, minerals, and prebiotic fiber, all without compromising safety or taste.

Study: Cricket Flour for a Sustainable Pasta: Increasing the Nutritional Profile with a Safe Supplement. Image Credit: Giedrius Akelis / Shutterstock

A recent study in the journal Foods evaluates the nutritional profile of cricket flour and its potential as a sustainable food source.

Perception and reality of Insect-based foods

Insects are rich in high-quality proteins, beneficial fatty acids, vitamins, fiber, and essential minerals (e.g., zinc, iron, and selenium), making them a favorable nutrient source that could be exploited to fight malnutrition. Besides a high nutritional profile, insect farming has a lower risk of zoonotic disease transmission, emits fewer greenhouse gases, and requires significantly less water and space, compared to traditional livestock farming.

In many parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America, insects have been traditionally consumed as food. Insect-based products are highly regulated under European legislation and require prior authorization before commercialization. Although numerous studies have documented the multiple benefits of insect-based food products, they still face cultural resistance, primarily due to unfamiliarity and a fear of novelty, or neophobia.

A previous study has highlighted the nutritional benefits and safety profiles of cricket (Acheta domesticus) flour. This study has shown that the addition of cricket flour to baked goods enhances the flavor and aroma of the product, thereby improving consumer acceptance.

Scientists believe that incorporating insect-based ingredients into traditional foods could enable the gradual integration of these products into the Western diet. The paper emphasizes that strategies such as blending cricket flour into familiar foods and providing clear information about its nutritional value are important for consumer acceptance in Western markets.

    About the study

The current study investigates the key nutrient components of cricket flour and a commercially available mixture of durum wheat and cricket flour (containing 10% w/w Acheta domesticus flour). Wheat flour was used as a reference, and wheat pasta served as a control (CTR). An expert chef prepared fettuccine-shaped pasta.

Protein, fatty acid, and mineral contents, such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg), were analyzed using a standard procedure.

The researchers also analyzed chitin content (a fiber with potential prebiotic benefits), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to assess safety.

    Study findings

Gravimetric analysis indicated that the ash content in cricket flour constituted 4.2% of the dry sample weight. The moisture content of CTR and wheat–cricket pasta, after 48 hours of drying, was 14.04% and 11.07%, respectively.

The water activity (Aw) values for the control pasta and wheat–cricket pasta were 0.83 and 0.64, respectively. These Aw values for the flours were similar to those measured in dried pasta and other cereal-based products. The Aw values, falling within the recommended range of <0.6 for dry raw materials, indicate high stability, structural integrity, and functionality of the flours during storage. A low water activity also ensures consistent behavior during processing and formulation.

In line with previous findings, the current study indicated an Fe content of 10.8 mg/100 g in cricket flour, which is higher than the Fe content of other common insect-based novel foods containing Tenebrio molitor and Ruspolia differens. In comparison to wheat flour, the Fe content in cricket flour is nearly ten times higher. A similar trend was also observed for Zn (22 mg/100 gram in cricket flour, compared to 0.84 mg/100 gram in wheat flour) and Cu (3.4 mg/100 gram in cricket flour, compared to 1.6 mg/100 gram in wheat flour).

High K (886 mg/100 g), Na (389 mg/100 g), and Ca (973 mg/kg) concentrations were measured in cricket flour. In contrast, wheat flour contained only 133 mg/100 g of K, 20 mg/kg of Na, and 200 mg/kg of Ca. However, the authors note that while cricket flour is rich in several key minerals, consuming enough to meet the full daily intake for nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, or potassium would require unrealistically high amounts; in practical terms, cricket flour is best used to complement other dietary sources.

According to the total fat content, cricket flour contained 11% total fat, and pasta prepared using a mixture of wheat and cricket flour contained approximately 2%. The fat content in insects typically varies among species and even within the same species due to physiological adaptations associated with diet, environmental conditions, and temperature.

Upon consuming 100 grams of cricket flour, 23% of the energy was found to be derived from metabolizing fats. Saturated fatty acids (SFA) accounted for 42% of the total fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) for 41%, and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) for 17%. Previous studies have shown that a diet rich in SFAs leads to an increase in serum low-density lipoprotein levels, thereby increasing the risk of coronary heart disease.

Percentages of fats in different flours investigated.

Percentages of fats in different flours investigated.

In cricket flour, short-chain SFAs were found to be absent, implying that they do not increase blood cholesterol levels. Palmitic and myristic acids were detected in the cricket flour samples. The current study indicated that consumption of cricket flour contributes to 9.8% of total energy from saturated fats, while pasta with wheat-cricket flour provides 1.9% of total energy from SFAs.

Cricket flour contained 17% oleic acid, a nutritionally significant MUFA, and these levels are comparable to traditional wheat pasta (15%) and pasta prepared with wheat-cricket flour. Previous studies have demonstrated that oleic acid reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which has protective effects against cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and certain types of cancer.

Linoleic acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid, was found at a high concentration in cricket flour, accounting for 39% of the total fatty acids. An increased intake of linoleic acid has been associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.

While cricket flour is considered healthy (Health Promoting Index >1), it has relatively higher atherogenicity (AI) and thrombogenicity (TI) indices compared to wheat flour. These indices, which reflect potential cardiovascular risk, are improved when cricket flour is blended with wheat flour, as in the mixed pasta.

The current study estimated the total amino acid content in cricket flour to be 60%, which was significantly higher than that of most commonly consumed foods. Both cricket flour and mixed flour samples showed higher levels of nearly all measured amino acids, including alanine, valine, and lysine, compared to wheat-based ones. However, compared to mixed flour, pure cricket samples had a higher concentration of amino acids.

Importantly, the study showed that a 100 g serving of cricket flour can provide 100% of the recommended daily intake for essential amino acids, a level that surpasses most conventional food sources.

The protein content of cricket flour is notably higher than that of many conventional foods, including meat, cheese, and wheat flour. The study also notes that chitin, a component of cricket flour, may act as a prebiotic fiber, supporting gut health. Recent research supports chitin’s role as a prebiotic that could benefit human digestive health.

A higher concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) was estimated in cricket flour samples than in other flour and pasta samples. All samples indicated a Carbon Preference Index (CPI) above 1, indicating a biogenic origin of the hydrocarbons. The study also identified that the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in cricket flour were primarily of pyrogenic (combustion) origin, not petrogenic (industrial), based on diagnostic ratios. Additionally, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels in cricket flour were low and well below established safety thresholds for food products. The study concludes that both TPH and PAH concentrations in cricket flour do not pose significant health risks and confirms its suitability for human consumption.

    Conclusions

In comparison to commercially available wheat flour, the cricket flour contained a higher concentration of protein and essential minerals, such as Na, Ca, Fe, and K. Notably, addition of 10% of cricket flour to wheat flour to make pasta substantially improves the nutritional profile and reduces the amount required to meet recommended daily intakes for several key nutrients. However, for some (such as calcium or magnesium), additional dietary sources would still be needed.

The authors highlight that, while cricket flour shows strong potential as a sustainable, nutrient-rich food supplement, its integration into traditional foods such as pasta—at modest levels—offers a feasible way to enhance nutrient intake without overwhelming sensory or cultural barriers.
