Royal family celebrates as Princess Anne receives ‘The Queen’ title

Princess Anne, the daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, looked candid and elegant in a blue dress on her big day, with one admirer affectionately referring to her as “The Queen” in the comments.

The Princess Royal, 74, left fans in awe as she put on a stylish display in a cobalt blue wrap dress on Wednesday, July 16, celebrating the incredible musical talent of British Army.

The Royal family shared stunning photos of Princess Anne with the latest update on her royal duty hours after she received an Honorary Doctorate from the West Yorkshire university.

The Palace wrote along with Anne’s photos: “Last night on Horse Guards Parade, The Princess Royal attended the Military Musical Spectacular, ‘Heroes’!”

The statement continued: “With over 250 people involved, the Massed Bands of the Guards Division joined forces with The Duchess of Edinburgh’s String Orchestra, the Household Division Contemporary Band, the Massed Pipes and Drums and Army Cadet Force and The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery to perform in their annual display.

“In their 200th anniversary year, the Royal Mews were also in attendance for a display of horse drawn state coaches and cars.”

The post attracted massive praise from fans, who fondly associated Anne with her late mother, with one bestowing the title “The Queen” in the comments.

Another admired her fashionable look, writing: “She is similar to her Mother! Very dedicated to the Crown and its principles in a great way!”

The royal paired the look with a layered pearl necklace, blue clutch purse and matching gloves as she took part part in the Household Division Musical Spectacular with Major General James Maurice Hannan Bowder.

Anne’s appearance comes after she stunned in a new look earlier this month while attending a State Banquet at Windsor Castle in London. After 50 years of wearing a voluminous updo, Anne sported a twisted bun for the outing. She complemented the look with her diamond Festoon Tiara, a piece of jewelry that has been in her collection since 1973.

While at the event, Anne was styled in an ivory dress adorned with lace embellishments on her bodice and featuring a pleated, flowy skirt.

  • Discord strengthens pitch to advertisers with new Orbs virtual reward

Discord strengthens pitch to advertisers with new Orbs virtual reward

    Dive Brief:

    • Discord, the gaming-focused communications platform, announced the global launch of Orbs, a type of virtual reward that players can earn by completing opt-in advertising experiences called Quests, according to a press release
    • Orbs offers users access to the Discord Shop and Discord Nitro, the platform’s subscription service, without a monetary commitment. During a seven-week pilot, millions of Orbs were earned and redeemed, per release details.
    • The launch of Orbs follows other efforts by Discord to scale its advertising business with a user-first approach and comes as the gaming landscape continues to attract attention from both consumers and marketers.

    Dive Insight:

As marketers seek ways to engage gamers, Discord is positioning Orbs as a solution. The product invites consumers to engage with brands through actions that fit authentically within their gaming experience and is designed to make campaign launch easier, eliminating the need by advertisers to create their own in-game reward or wonder if what they create will resonate with core audiences.

“By rewarding players with something they value, Discord is giving brands the ability to create an advertising experience that feels like gameplay,” said Peter Sellis, senior vice president of product at Discord, in a release. “With the launch of Orbs, we’re helping brands drive discovery and engagement in a way that feels natural to how people already use Discord.”

During its recent beta run, users earned and redeemed millions of Orbs, driving a 16-times increase in first-time Shop purchasers, with 79% first-time Shop buyers. Users can redeem Orbs in the Shop for exclusive items including Nitro credits, a limited-time access version of Discord’s subscription offering, a unique profile badge and a matching profile effect and avatar decoration.

The Orbs rewards program is also something users have said does not interfere with the overall experience. According to Discord’s internal research, 82% of its users expressed interest in earning virtual currency, with 46% stating that having such currency would enhance their experience. Similarly, more than 50% of users who have seen or interacted with a Quest say it has improved their experience.

Quests are designed to make brands feel like they are “part of the mission” rather than an interruption, according to release details. Quests are part of Discord’s efforts to scale its advertising business, which launched one year ago, with a user-first approach.

With more than 80% U.S. internet users and over 90% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha identifying as gamers, the gaming space represents a major opportunity for advertisers. U.S. in-game paid ad revenue is expected to top $11 billion by 2028, according to eMarketer. Accordingly, platforms like Twitch and Fortnite have been creating more opportunities for marketers to engage consumers, brands and creators. As the space continues to attract more dollars and attention, the IAB recently released a new Gaming Measurement Framework designed to bring clarity and consistency to media campaigns in gaming environments.

Heat waves that already affect the population of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) could significantly intensify in the future, with temperature increases of up to 6ºC and a general reduction in relative humidity in cities by the end of the century.

This is shown in a study carried out by ICTA-UAB, which warns of an increase in average maximum temperatures of 4ºC and average minimum temperatures of 3.5ºC if greenhouse gas emissions are not drastically reduced. Temperatures could reach values above 45ºC in urban inland areas of the AMB and above 42ºC in interior areas of the city of Barcelona.

The research, recently published in the Journal of Geophysical Research – Atmospheres, focuses on heat wave episodes in the AMB over the past 30 years (1991-2020) and projects these events towards the middle and end of the century. Using the Pseudo Global Warming (PGW) method and high spatial resolution urban meteorological modeling (1 km), the study simulates how the most common meteorological conditions recorded in recent decades would evolve if repeated under the climatic conditions forecast for mid-century (2041–2070) and end-century (2071–2100). The researchers considered a scenario in which regional and global conflicts continue, and the reduction of greenhouse gases remains not a priority, thereby producing an expected rise in CO2 emissions to nearly double that of current levels by 2100.

The study allows identifying which meteorological conditions would be altered to a greater or lesser extent by global warming. The results show a notable increase in maximum temperatures and the “urban heat island” effect, particularly in cities, as well as a reduction in relative humidity and changes in sea breezes.

The main results of the study are as follows:

    Temperature increase

    • Maximum temperatures could increase by an average of 4ºC and minimum temperatures around 3.5ºC by the end of the century.
    • Under especially stable atmospheric situations, increases of up to 6ºC are projected to be reached by the end of the century.
    • Thus, maximum temperatures could reach above 45ºC in urban inland areas of the AMB and above 42ºC in interior areas of the city of Barcelona. Minimum temperatures in coastal areas would not drop below 32ºC within the city of Barcelona by the end of the century.
    • The greatest temperature increases would occur in urban areas, probably due to the high absorption of radiation by artificial materials and poor ventilation caused by regional and large-scale winds. Additionally, this situation would occur in late summer conditions with a warmer Mediterranean Sea, which would also lead to higher minimum temperatures in coastal areas.

    Reduction of relative humidity

    • An average decrease of 6% in relative humidity for maximum values and 5.3% for minimum values is expected, with reduction peaks of up to 16% in the Garraf area, possibly due to alterations in sea breeze behavior.

    Increase in geopotential

    • Geopotential height at 500 hPa could increase up to 100 meters, which translates into a warmer atmosphere. This would occur more notably in the eastern area of the Iberian Peninsula and especially in the Mediterranean, indicating a more stable atmosphere prone to persistent heat waves.

“Our study is the first to combine the PGW approach with high-resolution urban simulations in Barcelona. This combination allows capturing the urban heat island effect and projecting more precisely how heat waves will worsen over the next 75 years,” explains Sergi Ventura, ICTA-UAB researcher and lead author of the study.

The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, which concentrates more than 3.3 million inhabitants in barely 636 km², already shows clear signs of climate vulnerability. In recent heat waves, increases in mortality of up to 27% have been observed. Although future episodes could be accompanied by lower relative humidity — which could reduce perceived thermal stress — nighttime heat will remain a critical risk factor. “Since more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, it is crucial to understand how future extreme events, such as heat waves, will affect these urban areas,” highlights Sergi Ventura. The study reinforces the urgency to advance adaptation plans, such as the Barcelona Climate Plan, which aims for a 40% emissions reduction by 2030 (compared to 2005), and measures like the creation of 1.6 km² of new green spaces, green roofs, and promotion of public transport.

Ventura highlights the innovative use of the Pseudo Global Warming technique to “transport” past events to future conditions. It also uses a detailed urban simulation with 1 km resolution, including urban parameters such as land use, urban materials used, and vegetation.

It also analyzes the sensitivity to global warming of the most common large-scale meteorological patterns in heat wave cases in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona found in previous studies.
