    Bela Bajaria on Netflix’s 2025 Emmy Nominees and the Squid Game Snub

    The new Netflix campus in New Jersey might want to dedicate a bit more square footage to its trophy room.

    On Tuesday morning, Netflix received 120 nominations for the 2025 Emmy Awards. That’s a ton, only outdone by the combination of HBO and Max (now HBO Max, again) — so first place may be a bit up for debate. This is all temporary anyway: Bela Bajaria vs. Casey Bloys (and maybe Matt Cherniss) won’t really be decided until Sept. 14.

    The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the busy Bajaria a few hours after the Emmy nominees came out. She’s a busy woman, and 44 nominated shows make for a hell of a lot of text chains. Read on to find out which Netflix nominee Bajaria texted first, what show was her snubbiest snub, and if four nods for The Residence made her rethink the decision to cancel the one-and-done whodunit series.

    What’s your reaction to this morning’s results?

    Look, I’m so happy and proud to have 120 nominations. But for me, really, the amazing thing is it’s also across 44 titles and 14 different programming categories. Why that’s also important and I’m excited about it — you know, we always aim for excellence in television across every different kind of category, because we know audiences love everything from animation to live to docs to unscripted to drama to comedy to limited to stand-up… To have those all being recognized — that work with all that talent across all of those categories is really exciting and rewarding.

    I also love it when we work with this incredible talent who are first-timers, right? This is where they get their first Emmy nomination. And to have the range from somebody like [15-year-old Adolescence star] Owen Cooper — [Adolescence] is actually the first thing that he’s done, to having first-time nominations for people like Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) and Adam Brody and Kristen Bell (both for Nobody Wants This) and Stephen Graham (Adolescence), who have such a long body of work, such an extensive body work, and then this is their first nomination. That is really rewarding and exciting for us.

    You can’t exactly send Owen champagne…

    (Laughs) Yes, exactly. He’s gonna get a nice sparkling apple cider or something.

    Where were you when the nominations came in?

    We do a really great, I think, really fun thing with the team. Many of us, get together in the home theater downstairs on Netflix. It’s PR and the awards team and marketing and executives and everybody from all over, cross-functionally. And we all sit in that room and we all cheer together — it’s so fun.

    We’re either on the phone or live-texting our nominees as they get their news, which is so great. It’s a really fun thing because there’s a lot of people, cross-functionally, who work so hard on these — who care so much. Because I think the one thing that is lost sometimes is like, we greenlight something, you champion it, you believe in it… You’re in this journey through all of these shows and the launch and — everybody’s invested, and so it’s really great to kind of do that together in that way.

    Who was your very first outgoing text?

    OK, you’re keeping me honest here. I’m actually looking at my texts for you…My first one was to Kristen Bell.

    My early ones were Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, Adam Sandler (Adam Sandler: Love You), Deb Cahn for The Diplomat — so it kind of went a little bit of like, you know, what [categories were] announced sort of early on — Charlotte Jones for America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. And then I did sort of a group one to to the Adolescence team, because we’re on a group chain.

    How do you not make Beyoncé your first text? You wait for the Beyoncé category for that everyone would understand.

    (Laughs) Yes, exactly. I should just wait [for her category].

    Never underestimate Queen Bey. Not surprised by Beyoncé Bowl nomination…I bet on Beyoncé all day long.

    You probably were right to start with Kristen Bell over Sandler. She’s responsible enough to actually be awake and ready for her day.

    (Laughs) Yes, yes.

    Ryan Murphy was right in there because Ryan had lots for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story

    So you fell back to second place to HBO and Max — you guys seem to swap slots each year…

    Well, look, there’s two different things. They have the combination right of two different things, right? It’s Max plus HBO, which gets them [an advantage]. We play a different game in the sense that we have so many members and an audience with lots of different tastes and moods, and we want to make sure that we have great programming in all of those areas, right? We know that people love to watch The Diplomat, Adolescence and America’s Sweethearts, right? And many of those people also, you know, watch (steampunk animated series) Arcane.

    We’re just in a different — we just sort of look at what we’re doing, right? We’re also trying to do something that no one has ever done before — you know, making film and TV all around the world across as many genres, like all over the world in so many languages…we’re just doing it different. We’re one Netflix.

    Did any specific Netflix Emmy “snubs” bother you more than others?

    If Emmy nominations are supposed to be really about excellence in storytelling and something that is so amazing that people watch and talk about and love, and have the quality and acting and writing and directing and cultural impact, the one I’m disappointed about is that the world’s biggest show, Squid Game, did not get recognized. Obviously, it made Emmy history also already, but a show in Korean, made in that way so authentically, has become the biggest show in the world, and to be so groundbreaking in storytelling and just the cultural global impact it had. That’s the one to me that would be the disappointment for all the talent involved.

    The news of the Residence cancellation came to us just two weeks ago — would have have rather that news held until after these nominations came out?

    No, I don’t really look at when the news or not the news…I think was is great is — we love The Residence. We championed it, we made it. Uzo [Aduba] has been part of the Netflix family for a long time and has been recognized before for awards. So, she gave an incredible performance. Not surprised at all by her nom. We thought that she would and should absolutely get it. So, to me, that’s great, that work. That work was completed and people loved it, and she was amazing and then gets recognized for it. That’s great. That, to me, doesn’t change kind of the story. And moving forward, it’s like, “Isn’t it great that we made this, she was incredible and she got recognized.”

    I know a lot of factors go into a cancellation, but does The Residence getting four Emmy nominations make you second guess that decision?

    No, because I always knew she’d be recognized.

    Will Netflix campaign for a show that has been canceled as hard as for one that hasn’t been?

    We’re gonna support— yeah! I mean for her and the show, like, we did — of course. Here’s the thing: I think what people forget is, like I said before, we developed it, we championed it, we really marketed — we did all of the things. And they’re all people involved who we work with and continue to work with and will continue to — so we’re always going to support that, for sure.

    You have five of the six variety special — prerecorded nominees. One of those is Your Friend, Nate Bargatze. Nate is hosting the Emmys, so you have to like your odds there…

    (Laughs) Is that how it works when you have the host [as one of your nominees]?

    Definitely, they just give you one.

    Oh good. Yeah, they give you one. Right, right, right, right, right, yeah. So we have five of the six [nominees], and we’re definitely getting [that] one?

    Yeah, they just give you one. It’s like when my dad coached Little League and he picked me as one of the team’s two all-stars — nobody can say anything about it.

    The 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were revealed by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on the morning of July 15, with the American Society of Cinematographers well represented within this year’s pool of talent.

    The primary 77th Emmy Awards ceremony will broadcast live on CBS on Sunday, September 14, (8-11 p.m. est/5-8 p.m. pst) from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live and will also stream via Paramount Plus the same day. The 77th Creative Arts Emmy Awards take place at the Peacock Theater over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 6, and Sunday, September 7, with an edited presentation to air on Saturday, September 14, at 8 p.m. est/pst on FXX.

    Astrophysicists Detect Gravitational Waves from Most Massive Black Hole Merger to Date

    Using twin detectors of NSF’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), astrophysicists with the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) Collaboration have detected the merger of two black holes with the highest combined mass ever observed. Discovered on November 23, 2023 and designated GW231123, the event produced a final black hole more than 225 times the mass of our Sun.

    LIGO made history in 2015 when it made the first-ever direct detection of gravitational waves, ripples in space-time.

    In that case, the waves emanated from a black hole merger that resulted in a final black hole 62 times the mass of our Sun.

    The signal was detected jointly by the twin detectors of LIGO, one located in Livingston, Louisiana, and the other in Hanford, Washington.

    Since then, the LIGO team has teamed up with partners at the Virgo detector in Italy and the Kamioka Gravitational Wave Detector (KAGRA) in Japan to form the LVK Collaboration.

    These detectors have collectively observed more than 200 black hole mergers in their fourth run, and about 300 in total since the start of the first run in 2015.

    Before now, the most massive black hole merger — produced by an event that took place in 2021 called GW190521 — had a total mass of 140 times that of the Sun.

    In the GW231123 event, the 225-solar-mass black hole was created by the coalescence of black holes each approximately 100 and 140 times the mass of the Sun.

    This puts it in a rare category of black holes called intermediate-mass black holes — heavier than those formed from stellar collapse, but much lighter than the supermassive black holes that lurk in the centers of galaxies.

    In addition to their high masses, the merging black holes were also rapidly spinning.

    “This is the most massive black hole binary we’ve observed through gravitational waves, and it presents a real challenge to our understanding of black hole formation,” said Dr. Mark Hannam, an astrophysicist at Cardiff University and a member of the LVK Collaboration.

    “Black holes this massive are forbidden through standard stellar evolution models.”

    “One possibility is that the two black holes in this binary formed through earlier mergers of smaller black holes.”

    “This observation once again demonstrates how gravitational waves are uniquely revealing the fundamental and exotic nature of black holes throughout the Universe,” said Dr. Dave Reitze, executive director of LIGO at Caltech.

    The researchers present the discovery of GW231123 this week at the 24th International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation (GR24) and the 16th Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves held jointly at the GR-Amaldi meeting in Glasgow, Scotland.

    Epic Games confirms legal action against Fortnite cheat seller and DDoS cyber attacker

    Fortnite developer Epic Games has confirmed it has taken “legal action” against two players, one accused of cheating, and the other admitting to having organized a “cyber attack” by way of DDoS (denial of service) attacks.

    In a statement posted to the Epic Games Newsroom X/Twitter account, Epic Games said: “We took legal action against two people who cheated and broke our rules.

    “One sold and used cheats and the other carried out cyber attacks on content creators who were livestreaming gameplay (aka: DDoS attacks). Both have been ordered to stop these activities and are banned from playing Fortnite. If you break the rules there are consequences. Check out their messages to the Fortnite community.”

    A follow-up tweet in the same thread linked to a 25-second-long video from YouTuber Mirrored, publicly apologizing to “the Fortnite community” for “both cheating in Fortnite tournaments and selling and distributing cheats and hardware that enabled others to cheat.

    “I violated Epic’s rules and they have taken legal action against me. I am banned from playing Fortnite forever and I’ll face legal action if I sell or distribute cheats again.”

    A minute-long video from YouTuber Zebsi similarly contains a written apology.

    “Hi everyone it’s Zebsi here,” the video begins. “I recently carried out DDoS attacks in Fortnite under the username TTV Humpty.LLC. The DDoS attacks impacted Fortnite matches of streamers, as well as other users involved in those matches.

    “I am sorry for the DDoS attacks and the harm and damage they caused to the streamers, other players, and Epic Games (the operators of Fortnite). My accounts have been banned from Fortnite. I regret my actions and will not be involved in any more DDoS attacks.”

    Neither former Fortnite player commented further on the legal action Epic mounted against them, nor confirmed if they’d been sanctioned in any other way.

    These are just the latest in a long line of lawsuits initiated by megacorp Epic Games, which is also cracking down on cheat software developers and players caught cheating in professional tournaments.

    Black Ferns XV Head Coach Willie Walker has announced a 28-strong squad to travel to South Africa for two matches against the Springbok Women’s team in Cape Town.

    The two fixtures will both be played at the 34,000-seat Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on 26 July and 2 August in what will be the first time a national New Zealand women’s team has played in South Africa.

    Bay of Plenty lock Holly Greenway will captain a Black Ferns XV squad that was selected following a final trial match against the Black Ferns at Semenoff Stadium in Whangarei on 5 July.

    Walker said the trial match had been a successful exercise ahead of the trip to Cape Town with a strong squad selected to play the Springbok Women.

    “The trial in Whangarei was an ideal build up for this group and helpful in assessing players and combinations. We’ve selected a strong squad and it’s a huge opportunity for these players to experience a touring environment and to play against a tier one international opponent.”

    The squad departs for South Africa on 20 July.

    Google Home for Wear OS rolling out custom Favorites

    As previewed last month with other Android updates, Google Home for Wear OS is letting you set a custom list of device Favorites. 

    At the moment, Favorites set on your phone are synced across Wear OS and Google TV’s Home Panel. Google is now letting you have device-specific shortcuts. 

    For example, you can pin your security cameras to your Google TV, your kitchen speaker to your Android phone and your thermostat to your Wear OS smartwatch — whatever combination makes it easier to manage your home.

    To do so, open the Google Home app on your wrist and scroll down for the “Edit” button. Tapping “Open on phone” will open the Google Home app to a page grouped by Actions, Automations, and Devices (organized into rooms).

    After adding or removing devices (or skipping and hitting “Next”), the next page lets you “Reorder favorites.” Tap “Save” once you’re done.

    On your watch, pull down to refresh if the Favorites feed hasn’t updated yet. This change is also reflected on the Wear OS Tile.

    We’re seeing this with Google Home 2.78.4.2 on Wear OS and version 3.35.55.0 on phones with the Public Preview program. Customization for the Google TV Home Panel is not live yet.

    The Google Pixel Watch 4 will reportedly use the same old chipset, but will have a bigger battery

    Google has abandoned Samsung and is switching to TSMC for future Tensor chipsets – the first, the Tensor G5, will power the Pixel 10 series and is already doing the rounds on Geekbench. The upcoming Pixel Watch 4, however, is not changing chipsets.

    The latest report is that Google will reuse the same chipset as on the Watch 3 and the Watch 2, the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1. This 2022 chip is fabbed on a 4nm node and has four Cortex-A53 cores.

    We recently heard that Qualcomm is working on a Snapdragon W6, with one big Cortex- A78 core and four A55 cores, but it seems that Google has no interest in that. Instead, the company may just be biding its time until its custom Tensor chip is ready in time for the Pixel Watch 5. That’s what we heard back in late 2024 and the leak indicated that the Tensor chip will have the same 1x A78 + 4x A55 setup as the W6 – that’s also the same configuration as the Exynos W1000 that Samsung reused for the Galaxy Watch8 series.

    Back to the Google Pixel Watch 4. We’ve seen renders, which pointed to a thicker body – 14.3mm, up from 12.3mm. The latest info indicates that both sizes – the 45mm model code named “kenari”/FK23 and the 41mm model code named “meridian”/FME23 – will have larger batteries, which may explain the chunkier build.

    The Pixel Watch 4 41mm will have a 327mAh battery (+20mAh from the Watch 3 41mm), while the 45mm model will have a 459mAh battery (+39mAh). Those represent +7% and +9% increases, respectively. That’s not much considering the W5 Gen 1 chip is not the most efficient around. Charging speeds will be increased too, but no concrete numbers have leaked yet.

    Besides offering a choice between 41mm and 45mm size, the Pixel Watch 4 will come in Bluetooth and 4G flavors. And it will be available in several colors with different bands ranging from two-tone leather through Active Sport band and to metal mesh bands. We expect that the new Pixel Watch 4 will be unveiled alongside the Pixel 10 series.
