How to install the MacOS 26 beta on your Mac (and which models support it)

How do I install the MacOS 26 public beta?

Once Apple releases the public beta of MacOS 26, you will not need to go through the above steps to to test the developer beta. Instead, you can enroll your Apple ID in Apple’s Beta Software Program and:

    1. Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
    2. Click “Beta Updates” and select “MacOS 26 Public Beta.”
    3. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install.

Then you’ll begin receiving automatic software updates to the latest public beta version of MacOS 26.

Which Macs are compatible with MacOS 26?

You’ll need a Mac with Apple Silicon (not Intel) running MacOS 15, which is generally from after 2020. Here’s the complete list of compatible models:

    • MacBook Air with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
    • MacBook Pro with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
    • MacBook Pro (16‑inch, 2019)
    • MacBook Pro (13‑inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
    • iMac (2020 and later)
    • Mac mini (2020 and later)
    • Mac Studio (2022 and later)
    • Mac Pro (2019 and later)

My Mac isn’t on that list, but I’m running Sequoia. Is it compatible?

Unfortunately, some Macs from 2020 or before that are compatible with Sequoia won’t work with MacOS 26. The following models fall into that category:

    • MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
    • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)
    • iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019)
    • iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019)
    • iMac Pro (2017)
    • Mac mini (2018)

    When will MacOS 26 release?

Apple released the developer beta series during WWDC 2025 and seeded beta 3 (build 25A5306g) on July 7, 2025. The public beta is expected to drop in July, with the final general release launching this September.

What should I do before installing the MacOS 26 beta?

You can always join the Apple Beta program to get the latest beta versions of MacOS. Before you download a beta version of an operating system, keep these housekeeping items in mind:

    • Back up your device and personal information.
    • Don’t download beta software, which will likely have bugs and glitches, on your everyday Mac.
    • Beta versions are released so you can test new features and share feedback to improve MacOS.

How to submit feedback to Apple

By the time the public beta is released, Apple will have two beta versions: MacOS 26 public beta and MacOS 26 developer beta. Both betas come with a built-in Feedback Assistant app. Whenever you experience an issue or something does not work as expected, send your feedback directly to Apple with Feedback Assistant.

Today’s NYT Strands Hints, Answer and Help for July 13 #497

Looking for the most recent Strands answer? Click here for our daily Strands hints, as well as our daily answers and hints for The New York Times Mini Crossword, Wordle, Connections and Connections: Sports Edition puzzles.

Today’s NYT Strands puzzle isn’t so tough if you’re used to reading the labels in your outfits. If you need hints and answers, read on.

I go into depth about the rules for Strands in this story.

If you’re looking for today’s Wordle, Connections and Mini Crossword answers, you can visit CNET’s NYT puzzle hints page.

    Hint for today’s Strands puzzle

Today’s Strands theme is: Completely fabricated.

If that doesn’t help you, here’s a clue: Check your clothes.

Clue words to unlock in-game hints

Your goal is to find hidden words that fit the puzzle’s theme. If you’re stuck, find any words you can. Every time you find three words of four letters or more, Strands will reveal one of the theme words. These are the words I used to get those hints but any words of four or more letters that you find will work:

    • LONE, PLAN, PLANE, PLANS, LION, STORE, PEEL POLE, POLED, PLAY, PAYS, PEND, SEAL, SALE, PORE, TORE, LEST, PERT.

    Answers for today’s Strands puzzle

These are the answers that tie into the theme. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, a theme word that reaches from one side of the puzzle to the other. When you have all of them (I originally thought there were always eight but learned that the number can vary), every letter on the board will be used. Here are the nonspangram answers:

    • SILK, WOOL, LINEN, RAYON, COTTON, SPANDEX, POLYESTER

    Today’s Strands spangram

completed NYT Strands puzzle for July 13, 2025, #497

The completed NYT Strands puzzle for July 13, 2025, #497.

    NYT/Screenshot by CNET

Today’s Strands spangram is TEXTILES. To find it, look for the T that’s three letters to the right on the bottom row, and wind up.

    Quick tips for Strands

#1: To get more clue words, see if you can tweak the words you’ve already found, by adding an “S” or other variants. And if you find a word like WILL, see if other letters are close enough to help you make SILL, or BILL.

#2: Once you get one theme word, look at the puzzle to see if you can spot other related words.

#3: If you’ve been given the letters for a theme word, but can’t figure it out, guess three more clue words, and the puzzle will light up each letter in order, revealing the word.

  • Big Bank Earnings, June Inflation, Retail Sales Data

Big Bank Earnings, June Inflation, Retail Sales Data

    Key Takeaways

    • Earnings updates from several top financial institutions are scheduled, including JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs. Investors also will be watching for earnings from TSMC, Netflix, Johnson & Johnson, and Novartis.
    • Consumer Price Index inflation and U.S. retail sales data for June also will be analyzed, along with updates on the housing market.
    • Federal Reserve officials set to speak this week include Federal Reserve Gov. Michelle Bowman and New York Fed President John Williams.

Big banks will make a lot of headlines this week. But so will economic data, political events, and results from the leader in streaming video.

Earnings from JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs are among the highlights of a busy corporate earnings calendar that effectively kick off the second-quarter earnings season. Several banks reported better-than-expected earnings in the most recent reporting round, while also warning of uncertainty. Investors will also be watching for reports from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and Netflix.

The June Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation report will offer the latest view of consumer prices as economists and investors monitor the impact of U.S. tariff policies and contemplate what could be next for interest rates. Tariffs could also play a role in June U.S. retail sales, due Thursday. The indicator declined for May as consumers pulled back from a tariff-fueled buying spree.

Stocks finished last week on a down note, though just off record highs. Bitcoin was also at records ahead of a “Crypto Week” in Washington, D.C.

Read to the bottom for our calendar of key events—and one more thing.

Big Banks, Tech, and Pharmaceutical Results Set to Kick Off Earnings Season

Earnings for the 2025 second quarter begin to roll in this week, with several top financial institutions set to report financial results. Other noteworthy tech, transportation and pharmaceutical firms are also due to report.

Big Bank earnings come as several announced positive results in their annual Federal Reserve stress tests, designed to measure the health of key financial institutions. JPMorgan’s (JPM) report, scheduled for Tuesday, comes after it beat estimates for the first quarter in part by bringing in more net interest income than expected.

Wells Fargo’s, set for the same day, will follow the bank’s net interest income decline for the prior quarter. Later in the week, Morgan Stanley’s financials are to be released after the global investment bank earned record stock-trading revenue in the prior quarter as market volatility raged.

TSMC (TSM) is on schedule to release its quarterly earnings on Thursday, after the chipmaker’s recent revenue data showed sales jumped by 40% in the first half of the year on strong artificial intelligence demand. Netflix’s (NFLX) report, expected the same day, comes after the streaming giant grew its sales by 12% in the first quarter.

Investors will also be watching for updates from pharmaceutical firms Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Novartis (NVS), as well as from aircraft engine maker GE Aerospace (GE) and beverage behemoth PepsiCo (PEP).

Investors Watching for June Data on Inflation, Retail Sales, Housing Starts

The release of the CPI report on Tuesday comes after the inflation measurement rose slightly in May to an annual rate of 2.4%, which was less of an increase than economists expected.

With price pressures easing, there’s now more pressure on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates at its end-of-the-month meeting, especially as officials have cited inflation worries as driving the Fed’s decision to keep interest rates where they are. Several Fed officials are scheduled to speak this week, including Gov. Michelle Bowman and New York Fed President John Williams.

U.S. retail sales data for June will be closely followed by market watchers, given that consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic activity. Sales declined for May as consumers who bought products ahead of tariff implementations pulled back on their spending.

The homebuilder confidence survey coming Thursday, followed by Friday’s housing starts data for June, will provide more insight into the housing market, which has been plagued by low inventory levels.

  • 3 Things Analysts Are Watching as Earnings Season Gets Rolling This Week

3 Things Analysts Are Watching as Earnings Season Gets Rolling This Week

    Key Takeaways

    • Earnings season starts this in earnest this week with the arrival of several quarterly reports from big U.S. banks.
    • Analysts are watching themes including the expectation of continued growth and the effect of tariffs on corporate results.
    • Key results due to arrive include JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, PepsiCo, and Netflix.

The big-bank earnings reports due this week mark the quasi-official start to the second-quarter earnings season. Analysts expect growth, but they’re also eyeing the effects of tariffs as President Donald Trump’s trade policy continues to evolve.

The numbers are landing with plenty already on investors’ minds, from ongoing trade-policy drama to questions about the path forward for interest rates. Stocks have risen lately, finishing last week just off record highs.

Big banks including JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Morgan Stanley (MS) could offer insight into consumer health and the appetite for deals. Other companies that will likely offer clues about broader themes include consumables giant PepsiCo (PEP) and chipmaker TSMC (TSM). Netflix (NFLX) is also set to report, making it the first of the “FANG” (and, for that matter, “FAANG”) stocks to deliver its numbers.

Here are three themes to watch for as results for the quarter—covering April through June in most cases—start to roll in.

Analysts are looking for growth. S&P 500 EPS is seen rising 4.1% year-over-year, according to a recent report from UBS; companies that have already reported their numbers, the bank observed in late June, have beaten estimates by more, on average, than the longer-term trend.

Historically, UBS said, expectations “start too high, are adjusted lower heading into reporting season, and could come in slightly higher vs. expectations.”

S&P 500 companies reported double-digit year-over-year earnings growth in the first quarter for a second-straight period, according to FactSet.

There are also signs of caution. Wall Street analysts cut their estimates for S&P 500 companies’ earnings more than usual during the second quarter, according to a FactSet analysis published July 3.

The combined bottom-up earnings-per-share estimate for the companies in the index fell more than 4% between the end of March and the end of June, FactSet said, more than the average seen in the past 5, 10, or 15 years. (It was in line with the average for the past 20 years.)

Trump’s tariffs are likely to be a hot topic. Deutsche Bank analysts on July 7 estimated that tariffs will ding second-quarter earnings for the S&P 500 by about 2 percentage points, with the “hit” likely to increase in the second half of the year.

Companies with “concentrated tariff effects” account for about a quarter of S&P 500 earnings, according to Deutsche Bank. Goldman Sachs economists expect companies to pass 70% of direct costs associated with tariffs to consumers in the form of higher prices.

“Economic fundamentals appear solid at this juncture, but uncertainty is pervasive,” National Retail Federation Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said last week. “Everyone is sorting through what the tariff rates are going to be, how they will impact inflation for retail products and, importantly, how long they will be in place.”

PMD issues alert as monsoon rains raise risk of flash floods

    Listen to article

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide alert as heavy monsoon rains are expected to hit various regions of the country tonight and Monday, raising concerns over flash floods, landslides, and urban flooding.

According to the PMD, strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, along with a westerly wave, are likely to affect the upper and central parts of the country.

As a result, heavy rainfall is forecast in Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, northeastern Punjab, hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, and parts of Balochistan.

The department warned that the intense rainfall may cause flash flooding in local streams and nullahs, particularly in hilly areas.

Landslides and mudslides could lead to road closures in vulnerable regions, including Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Urban flooding is also likely in low-lying areas of major cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar.

Strong windstorms may damage power lines, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.

Today, hot and humid conditions are forecast across most of the country, with isolated thunderstorms in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Balochistan, and southern Punjab.

On Monday, rain with windstorms and thunderstorms is expected in scattered areas of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Authorities have advised residents in high-risk areas to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.
