AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 16, 2025 — This holiday season, the FirstEnergy Foundation is sharing the spirit of giving by awarding $20,000 in “Gifts of the Season” grants to two nonprofit organizations making a positive impact in Ohio communities served by FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) electric companies. Altogether, the Gifts of the Season program will provide a total of $100,000 to eight nonprofits across five states in FirstEnergy’s service area in 2025.
As part of a commitment to help address food and housing insecurity, the Foundation awarded grants to organizations in Ohio that meet critical needs through programs that provide food, shelter and other essential services:
Torrence Hinton, FirstEnergy’s Ohio President: “The holidays can be especially tough for families in need, and colder weather adds even more pressure. For neighbors without a warm bed or a place to call home, Ohio’s harsh conditions make shelter a lifeline. Thanks to the incredible work of our nonprofit partners, more people will have access to warm meals, safe shelter and the care they deserve. We’re grateful to stand alongside these organizations in supporting our communities.”

Construction of the new Saskatoon Urgent Care Centre (UCC) continues to progress, nearing 70 per cent completion. The project has completed essential aspects including the structure, roofing and interior framing. Drywall installation is actively progressing with electrical and mechanical work ongoing.
“It is exciting to see the progress on the new Saskatoon Urgent Care Centre, knowing the impact it will have in improving access to care for Saskatoon families dealing with illnesses and injuries that require immediate attention,” Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. “Urgent Care Centres put patients first by improving patient flow through emergency departments and ensuring families have access to the right care in the right place and at the right time. With the success of the Regina UCC, we look forward to bringing this model to Saskatoon and more communities in the future.”
When complete, the UCC will offer treatment for minor illness, injuries, mental health and addiction supports, that are non-life-threatening but typically require urgent same day treatment.
“I am very pleased that construction on the Saskatoon Urgent Care Centre is progressing as expected,” SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Sean Wilson said. “This important milestone demonstrates our government’s commitment to building the health infrastructure Saskatchewan needs now and into the future.”
The UCC will be located near St. Paul’s Hospital and will be operated by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) through a long-term lease agreement with Ahtakakoop Cree Developments (ACD), who has partnered with the government on the project. Substantial completion is anticipated in Fall 2026.
“The Saskatoon Urgent Care Centre is not just a facility; it is a commitment to accessible, respectful care built on partnership,” Ahtahkakoop Cree Developments CEO Jay Ahenakew Funk said. “It represents improved access to care and demonstrates a commitment from the Province and AC Developments to the people of Saskatchewan.”
“The Saskatoon Urgent Care Centre will provide enhanced patient access to same-day care,” Saskatchewan Health Authority Chief Operating Officer Derek Miller said. “Multi-disciplinary medical teams will collaborate on patient-centred care in one location, including on-site diagnostic imaging, lab services and mental health and addictions supports. Today’s announcement marks significant advancement and is a testament to our partnership with Ahtahkakoop Cree Developments and the Government of Saskatchewan.”
Since opening in July 2024, the Regina UCC has provided same-day care to over 57,000 patients. Planning is underway to add UCCs in Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, North Battleford and second locations in both Regina and Saskatoon.

December 16, 2025 Mississauga, Ontario Employment and Social Development Canada
The Government of Canada is building one strong Canadian economy. To do so, Canada needs skilled trades workers to develop major infrastructure and build millions more homes. That means the newest generation of builders must get proper training.
Today, Leslie Church, Parliamentary Secretary to the secretaries of State for Labour, for Seniors, and for Children and Youth, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Jobs and Families (Persons with Disabilities), on behalf of the Honourable John Zerucelli, Secretary of State (Labour), announced more than $3 million in funding for the Ontario Masonry Training Centre. The project will develop a guide for the Red Seal bricklayer trade to create and implement a green training program. The training will help bricklayers learn modern, sustainable practices and gain the skills needed to refresh and adjust existing masonry buildings.
This project is funded by the Union Training and Innovation Program’s Sustainable Jobs stream under the Government’s Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy, which also complements investments in the Sustainable Jobs Training Fund that help thousands of workers to upgrade or gain the new skills required for a green economy.
Today’s announcement is part of the Government’s response to the skilled trades workforce’s most pressing needs. Budget 2025 has proposed a $75 million expansion of the Union Training and Innovation Program over three years, which will further boost union-based apprenticeship training in the Red Seal trades.

For the past six years, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick has been a passionate advocate of the initiative. This year, as Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, she joined Women’s Aid ABCLN CEO, Gillian Creevey to personally deliver the donations, collected at Antrim Civic Centre, Mossley Mill, Antrim Castle Gardens Gift Shop, Ballyclare Comrades Ladies Football Club and Ballyclare Town Hall.
The Mayor paid tribute to the generosity of the local community: “Thank you to everyone who donated. Your kindness brings dignity, comfort, and will help make bedtime a little brighter this Christmas.”
