    Marvel Blockbuster Gets Rave Reviews

Marvel‘s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has been unveiled to members of the film press, and first reactions are praising the MCU epic as a “visual feast” with “snappy, confident storytelling.”

Next Best Picture editor-in-chief Matt Neglia wrote on X that the Marvel tentpole lives up to its namesake of “fantastic,” hailing the film’s “excellent” leading quartet and “delightful” retro-futuristic aesthetic.

He wrote, “Combined with Matt Shakman’s snappy, confident storytelling, this is an intriguing & satisfying first step for Marvel’s new team (easily the best depiction of this quartet on-screen to date) as the MCU continues to regain control of the ship & steer it closer to ‘Doomsday.’”

Entertainment journalist Brandon Davis also took to X to share his thoughts. He wrote that “Fantastic Four” was one of the “best things Marvel has ever done” and compared the visuals to those of Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar.”

“Galactus is awesome. Silver Surfer looks really, really good. VFX were often immaculate,” Davis wrote. “Cosmically and on Earth, Matt Shakman dropped a visual feast.”

People staffer Sharareh Drury echoed the praise, writing on X that “Fantastic Four” was “breathtaking.” She gave particular kudos to Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, who play MCU power couple Reed Richards and Susan Storm, respectively.

“Stunning visuals, a moving story, witty banter and epic action. Marvel’s First Family delivers one awesome ride,” she wrote. “Pedro Pascal nails it as Mr. Fantastic. Vanessa Kirby stands out as Sue Storm – she’s a shooting star.”

Rounding out the leading four alongside Pascal and Kirby are Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka The Thing. “First Steps” follows the titular super squad as they defend Earth from the gargantuan planet-eating space tyrant Galactus. Matt Shakman directs with a script by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson and Jeff Kaplan.

Other cast members include Ralph Ineson, Julia Garner, Natasha Lyonne, Sarah Niles and Paul Walter Hauser.

Variety exclusively reported that John Malkovich was originally set to appear in “First Steps” as Red Ghost, but was cut out of the film. Shakman said it was “heartbreaking not to include him in the final version of the movie,” adding that he was “honored” Malkovich had joined the project in the first place.

“There were a lot of things that ultimately ended up hitting the cutting room floor,” Shakman said. “When we were building a ’60s retro-future world, introducing all of these villains, introducing these four main characters as a group, as well as individually, introducing the idea of a child — there was a lot of stuff to balance in this movie and some things had to go ultimately in terms of shaping the film for its final version.”

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” hits theaters July 24. Check out more first reactions below.

“#FantasticFour is a story about family above all else, where each member of the team is equally important. No one is underserved; the movie excels when fleshing out the various bonds between Pedro, Vanessa, Ebon, & Joseph. The retro ’60s aesthetic works on all fronts.” – Andrew J. Salazar (@AndrewJ626)

“#FantasticFour Is a masterpiece. the visual effects and the score are a HUGE stand out. Galactus Is huge In IMAX. It’s emotional and gives you hope. It beats you off and doesn’t stop. STAY Until the END CREDITS.” – Deo (@frickyuu)

“Fantastic Four friggin’ rocks! More than any Marvel movie before it, F4 feels like Jack Kirby’s imagination brought to life on the big screen. Between this and Superman, 2025 might go down as the year movies finally embrace the wonderful weirdness of comic books.” – Chris Killian (@chriskillian)

“Nothing will prepare you for #TheFantasticFour First Steps. Pedro Pascal is the perfect Reed, but the entire cast shines and does right by these characters. It’s funny, moving, gorgeous to look at, and non-stop FANTASTIC. This is @MarvelStudios at its brilliant best.” – Josh Wilding (@Josh_Wilding)

  • Volcanic eruptions may be caused by mysterious ‘BLOBS’ under the Earth

Volcanic eruptions may be caused by mysterious ‘BLOBS’ under the Earth

While many science books would have you believe the Earth’s lower mantle—the layer deep below the crust—is smooth, it’s actually made up of a mountainous-like topography that moves and changes just like the crust above it. Further, research shows that this lower mantle contains two continent-sized structures, which researchers have dubbed big lower-mantle basal structures, or BLOBS.

We don’t know exactly what these BLOBS consist of, but scientists suspect they could be made up of the same materials surrounding them. In fact, new research published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment suggests that the planet’s volcanic activity may be driven by volcanic plumes that move with their origins.

    Today’s Top Deals

The origins in question, researchers believe, could be the BLOBS found deep within the Earth. These mysterious structures appear to be the driving force behind the Earth’s volcanic history, and while there are scientists hard to work trying to prove that, looking at past simulations has painted a pretty clear picture to work with.

To start with, the researchers used computer models to simulate the movements of the BLOBS over 1 billion years ago. These models showed that the BLOBS produced mantle plumes that were sometimes tilted or even rose up higher. This suggests that the eruptions seen over the past billion years likely took place above the BLOBS, or at least very close to them.

The researchers believe that this data shows that the Earth’s volcanic activity could somehow be linked to the BLOBS, despite how deep they are in the Earth. The findings are “encouraging,” the researchers note in a post on The Conversation, as it suggests that future simulations may be able to predict where mantle plumes will strike next. This could help us create a general volcano warning system.

Despite being destructive—the Hunga volcano eruption of 2022 continues to set records years later—large volcanic eruptions also have the ability to create new islands and landmasses. Knowing where they occur—or where they occurred in the past—could help us save lives and better understand how our planet formed at different points in history. Of course, we still have a lot to learn about the mysterious BLOBS found deep in the Earth. But this research is a smoking gun that could open the door for tons of new discoveries and revelations.

  • Marc Marquez beats Acosta despite strategy intrigue in Brno Sprint

Marc Marquez beats Acosta despite strategy intrigue in Brno Sprint

It was the first ever Tissot Sprint at Brno and a first pole start of 2025 for Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) so right from lights out, there was lots on the line. After what seemed like a tyre pressure battle led to both Pecco and teammate Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) slowing up, the #93 soon pushed his way to the front to make it another Sprint success. He took gold ahead of Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech3), making it two KTMs on a podium for the first time this season.

FIRST STAGES: battles all the way through the pack

Snatching the holeshot, Pecco lead the way until Turn 3 when teammate Marc attacked and took over at the front. Elsewhere, a poor start from Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) left him down in 19th on Lap 1 whilst at Turn 3 on Lap 2, Augusto Fernandez (Yamaha Factory Racing Team) slid off and collected Takaaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda LCR), ending both their Sprints. Into P3 on the second lap, Acosta got himself ahead of Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) whilst the Frenchman was rubbing fairings with Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) at Turn 10. Meanwhile, Bez’s returning teammate, World Champion Jorge Martin, was up into P7 in the early stages.

TYRE PRESSURE CONCERNS: Pecco and Marc slow from leading positions

At the end of Lap 4, Bastianini was capitalising on his strong weekend so far and into fourth and ahead of Quartararo, but the drama was further up the road. On the exit of Turn 4, Bagnaia slowed down and was passed by Acosta, Bastianini and Quartararo. A lap later and it could have been a replay – this time for Marc Marquez; the #93 likewise slowing down and letting Acosta through to let the #37 lead in his first outing at Brno.

Both the Ducatis slowing down but getting straight back into the pace suggested that tyre pressures needed controlling but whatever it was, the last three laps had Acosta, Marc Marquez, Bastianini and Quartararo all in victory contention. Behind, Bezzecchi clambered ahead of Pecco at Turn 11, now into the top five, with Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse MotoGP Team) next up.

LATE CHARGES: Bezzecchi and Fernandez move up, Marc retakes P1

On the penultimate lap, Bezzecchi worked his way into fourth ahead of Quartararo as his trademark late pace came to the fore. Up at the front and on the direction change from Turn 8 into Turn 9, Marc Marquez pounced in what would prove to be a Sprint-winning pass on ‘El Tiburon’. Another success in the Sprint for the Championship leader who extended his Championship advantage, with a first Sprint podium for Acosta since Aragon 2024. Two KTMs on a Sprint podium underline their previous happy memories at Brno and it’s a first rostrum of the year for Bastianini. There was a small caveat on top of the podium with Marquez’s tyre pressure under investigation but that was soon over, the win standing for Marc.

ROUNDING OUT THE ORDER: Bezzecchi just off the podium, Martin 11th

Bezzecchi claimed P4 with Quartararo behind him. On the final lap, Fernandez pushed his way into sixth place ahead of polesitter Pecco, whilst Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) and super-sub Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) completed the points-paying positions. On his comeback ride, Martin finished in 11th, just behind Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). Alex Marquez, meanwhile, was forced to settle for P17 and zero points after the nightmare start. That’s 12 more lost to Marc Marquez in the championship chase… but Sunday is another day.

  • British Open: Rory McIlroy produces the most bizarre shot of his life

British Open: Rory McIlroy produces the most bizarre shot of his life

So, this was weird: Rory McIlroy, playing his second shot from the rough on the 11th at Royal Portrush in Round 3 of the British Open, somehow managed to unearth another ball in mid-swing. Seriously, look at this:

    Here’s another look:

The second ball was apparently embedded in the ground a few inches ahead of McIlroy’s ball, and popped into the air as McIlroy’s shot flew greenward.

McIlroy tossed the extra ball aside. For the record, it was a Titleist 4, and it ended up in the hands of a lucky fan:

Alas, because McIlroy didn’t replace the ball in its original spot, the R&A hit Shane Lowry with a two-shot penalty. (Kidding. Maybe.)

McIlroy would go on to bogey the hole.

After a hot three-birdies-in-four-holes start, McIlroy cooled off slightly, parring the next six holes before the weirdest bogey at 11.

He did, however, follow that up with a monster putt for eagle at No. 12 to move closer to the top of the leaderboard.

  • Celtic 4 Newcastle United 0

    Celtic 4 Newcastle United 0

Competing for the first-ever adidas Trophy, the Magpies fell behind before the half-hour mark at Celtic Park following Arne Engels’ penalty before Johnny Kenny’s strike doubled the Hoops’ advantage on the stroke of half-time.

Anthony Elanga was handed his United debut at the restart following the Sweden international’s transfer from Nottingham Forest last week but Celtic extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second-half through Yang Hjun-jun’s close-range effort before Liam Scales’ header rounded off a difficult afternoon for Eddie Howe’s side in Glasgow.

Backed by 10,000 away supporters at Parkhead, Sven Botman produced an important last-ditch block to prevent Callum McGregor from opening the scoring in the early stages of the friendly as the Dutch defender turned the Celtic captain’s close-range strike onto the roof of the net after Yang’s inviting cross was initially miscued by Kenny before kindly falling into McGregor’s path.

Nick Pope was forced into action shortly after Fabian Schär inadvertently turned Yang’s cross towards his own net, forcing the Magpies goalkeeper to react quickly and turn the ball around the right-hand post for a corner with a strong left hand.

William Osula went close to firing United ahead as the Denmark Under-21 international collected Joe Willock’s pass before his deflected effort from the edge of the box was tipped over the bar by Celtic ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Celtic took the lead in the 28th minute through Engels’ penalty. After the Belgian midfielder was fouled inside the box by Willock, the Belgian midfielder took the resulting spot-kick, sending Pope the wrong way from 12 yards after calmly stroking the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Jacob Murphy, marking eight years since joining his boyhood club from Norwich City, went close to equalising for the visitors in swift fashion after connecting with Matt Targett’s cross at the back post but the winger’s header was comfortably held by Schmeichel.

With the half-time whistle approaching, Newcastle were dealt a further blow in the 45th minute as Kenny doubled Celtic’s advantage. After Schmeichel’s lengthy kick from his own box caught out the United defence, Pope was unable to head the ball clear of danger, which bounced over the Magpies goalkeeper and allowed Kenny to tap into an empty net.

Elanga was awarded his Magpies bow at the restart, one of nine changes at half-time, but it was Osula who went close to halving the deficit in the opening minutes of the second-half. After young duo Joe White and Alex Murphy combined neatly on the left flank, the latter’s low cross into the box found Osula but the 21-year-old’s first-time shot was saved by Schmeichel from close-range.

Celtic extended their advantage in the 52nd minute through Yang as the South Korea international got onto the end of Daizen Maeda’s dangerous pass before slotting a first-time strike beyond Martin Dúbravka.

Dúbravka prevented Celtic substitute Reo Hatate from adding to Celtic’s goalscoring tally as the Japanese midfielder dispossessed Jamaal Lascelles before his low drive from the edge of the box was scooped out for a corner by the Slovakian ‘keeper.

In the 75th minute, however, Newcastle conceded a fourth goal of the afternoon through Scales as the Irish defender rose high from Kieran Tierney’s lofted cross before guiding his header into the left-hand corner of the net.

Teenage forward Sean Neave, who joined the Magpies’ Academy as a 13-year-old, was handed his first-team debut for his boyhood club in the closing stages and almost scored on his United bow in stoppage-time as the Winlaton-born youngster’s header from Emil Krafth’s cross was pushed away on the line by substitute goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope (Martin Dúbravka 46), Kieran Trippier (Emil Krafth 46), Sven Botman (Jamaal Lascelles 46), Sven Botman (Dan Burn 46), Matt Targett (Alex Murphy 46), Bruno Guimarães (c) (Sandro Tonali 46), Lewis Miley (Travis Hernes 76), Joe Willock (Joe White 46), Jacob Murphy (Anthony Elanga 46), Harvey Barnes (Anthony Gordon 46), William Osula (Sean Neave 76).

Subs not used: John Ruddy, Harrison Ashby, Anthony Munda.

Lenny Martinez: “We almost achieved our plan 100%”

“We had a plan at the start this morning and we achieved it almost 100%. I wanted to take all the points except for the finish, and in the end I didn’t manage to get through at the front at Peyresourde, but I still took second place because Arensman managed to break away on his own. I didn’t have much left in my legs. I would have loved to win this stage, but I can see that there are more experienced riders who manage to be stronger at the end than at the start of the stage.

In the Tourmalet, I managed not to go into the red, and it was incredible to do that climb alone with the polka dot jersey and all those people cheering me on.

Now I have to keep taking as many points as possible in the mountain stages and target the days when I have to put in a big effort.”
