GPs underlined the need for improved, structured support to sustain SM in chronic care beyond current program standards.

A study published in July 2025 issue of BMC Primary Care highlighted the critical role of self-management (SM) in chronic disease care and managed the limited information available on its integration within German disease management programs (DMP).

Researchers aimed to explore general practitioners (GP) experiences and strategies in supporting SM.

They employed an exploratory qualitative design and performed 5 focus group discussions (FGD) with 20 GPs in August and September 2020. Participants were purposively selected from teaching practices affiliated with the University Hospital Cologne. Using a semi-structured interview guide, GP experiences and views on SM were explored in question blocks. A multi-professional team analyzed the data using Kuckartz’ method of qualitative content analysis.

The results showed that the FGDs addressed 3 key areas: GPs’ views on patient SM in DMPs for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and coronary heart disease (CHD), perceptions of factors influencing SM motivation, and strategies to enhance patient motivation. Conversations centered on patient motivation and ability to maintain sustainable SM in daily routines. Many GPs adopted a patient-centered approach, acknowledging complex individual, social, and institutional factors that affect SM in those with chronic conditions.

Investigators concluded that while GPs routinely supported SM within DMPs, sustained patient engagement required additional standardized measures beyond existing care.

  • Can cannabis impact aging? Study shows marijuana could alter ‘genetic code’

Can cannabis impact aging? Study shows marijuana could alter ‘genetic code’

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Research suggests that using cannabis may alter a person’s epigenetic code.

The research suggested that marijuana use can impact the genetic code responsible for activating and deactivating various genes.

The study highlighted the importance of understanding marijuana’s effects on the body, as it remains one of the most widely used drugs globally. While some effects are well-known, the research indicated a broader impact than previously anticipated.

Most notably, one marker identified in the study is similar to those found in tobacco use, suggesting a closer link between the two substances than previously thought.

Researchers originally aimed to find out how cannabis use affects the epigenetic code, which in turn could reveal potential positive or negative health effects for humans who use the substance. They focused on genes related to aging, typically regulated by the body’s epigenetic code. Understanding these changes could provide insights into aging processes and the body’s “epigenetic age.”

“In our study, we observed associations between cumulative marijuana use and multiple epigenetic markers across time,” said Lifang Hou, who was the senior author of the study. “Interestingly, we consistently identified one marker that has previously been associated with tobacco use, suggesting a potential shared epigenetic regulation between tobacco and marijuana use. The observed marijuana markers were also associated with cell proliferation, infection and psychiatric disorders, however, additional studies are needed to replicate and verify these findings.”

The study involved data from participants who reported their cannabis use over several years. Researchers analyzed blood samples taken five years apart, comparing them based on factors such as continuous and recent cannabis use. The findings revealed several markers associated with both types of use.

Despite these insights, researchers emphasized the need for further studies to fully comprehend the connections and their extent within the epigenetic code.

“This research has provided novel insights into the association between marijuana use and epigenetic factors,” Dr. Drew Nannini said. “Additional studies are needed to determine whether these associations are consistently observed in different populations. Moreover, studies examining the effect of marijuana on age-related health outcomes may provide further insight into the long-term effect of marijuana on health.”

Nonetheless, the research offers new perspectives on the relationship between marijuana use and epigenetic factors.

Microsoft quietly removes ability to purchase movies and TV shows on Xbox and the Microsoft Store

Microsoft is no longer selling or renting movies and TV shows.

The change came about abruptly earlier this week, with a FAQ update on both the Xbox and Windows pages confirming that as of 18th July, “Microsoft has stopped selling new movie and TV content”.

“Existing customers can continue to access their previously purchased content on Windows and Xbox devices,” the FAQ explains, “[and] players can continue to play personal videos on Xbox devices. Windows customers can continue to have access to playback and the download functionality.”

As PC Gamer points out, this isn’t unique to Microsoft – in fact, both Apple and Google have effectively done the same thing, only earlier – and it appears the megacorp is committed to permitting existing customers access their paid-for content (at least, for the time being).

As per Microsoft’s terms of sale, there’s no way to get a refund, nor can you switch your purchased content to another service. For anyone who used the service regularly, Microsoft suggests you use “other entertainment services that offer the latest home entertainment releases”, such as “Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, among others”.

Earlier this month, Microsoft laid off a reported 9,000 employees across the business, including significant cuts from its gaming division.

Torrential rainfall that slammed South Korea for five days has left 17 people dead and 11 others missing, the government said on Sunday.

One person was killed after their house collapsed during heavy rain and another person was found dead after being swept away by a swollen stream in Gapyeong, a town northeast of Seoul, according to the Interior and Safety Ministry.

The ministry said 10 people were discovered dead and four others were reported missing in the southern town of Sancheong over the weekend after heavy downpours caused landslides, house collapses and flash floods there.

A ministry report said that one person died in the southern city of Gwangju. It said that seven others remain missing in Gwangju, Gapyeong and elsewhere.

Earlier last week, a person was also killed when their car was buried by soil and concrete after a retaining wall of an overpass collapsed in Osan, just south of Seoul, during heavy rain. Three others were found dead in a submerged car, a swollen stream and a flooded basement in southern South Chungcheong province.

As of 4 pm local time on Sunday, about 2,730 people remain evacuated from their homes, the ministry report said. The rain has since stopped in most of South Korea, and heavy rain alerts have been lifted throughout the country.

Since Wednesday, southern regions have received up to about 600-800 millimeters of rain, according to the ministry report.

President Lee Jae Myung expressed deep sympathy to those who lost their loved ones and suffered financial damage. Lee said the government will push to designate areas hit hard it by the downpours as special disaster zones. The designation would provide them with greater financial and other recovery support from the government.

Tour de France Daily | Stage 15 | Powless rolls the dice

Harry Sweeny joined our team in 2024 and quickly became a key rider for us in the classics and grand tours. This is the Australian’s fifth season as a pro.

Harry is still discovering his limits as a racer. As a U23, he won Il Piccolo Lombardia and has since ridden the Tour de France, where, as a rookie, he finished third on a stage and rode onto the Champs-Élysées in the break, as jets trailed bleu, blanc, et rouge streaks into the sky overhead. He has raced Paris-Roubaix in the wet and Liège-Bastogne-Liège alongside his friend, the former winner and cycling legend, Philippe Gilbert. Last year, he finished seventh on GC at the Tour of Luxembourg after riding hard for his teammates all season. Harry believes that his best is yet to come.

He came to cycling late. As a kid growing up in Brisbane, where his family moved when he was a child, he played soccer and rugby and did gymnastics and swam. He took up triathlon as a schoolboy, but focused on cycling when he was a junior and was recovering from a running injury. He started out racing local crits. His athleticism soon shone and he was picked to race the world championships in Richmond, Virginia for the Australian national team.

He moved to Europe to race, first for a small junior team in Belgium, and then for two years with the Australian Institute of Sport squad, which was then based in Italy, before moving back to Belgium for his final year as an U23. Those years opened up new worlds for Harry.

EF Education-EasyPost’s open-minded international character is a big draw for him. On the teams he has raced for in the past, he has often been one of the few foreigners. Our team is made up of riders and staff from dozens of nationalities. Most of them know what it is like to build a life far from home and can help with all of the little difficulties that come with that. Our multicultural make up helps us to expand our outlook and think beyond traditional ways of doing things too.

Harry is a lot more than a bike racer. He is a keen cook and he loves to go camping and hiking with his girlfriend, an environmental scientist, near their adopted home in Andorra. In the winter, he loves to ski. And he is a YouTuber.

This summer, Harry will return to the Tour de France in EF Education-EasyPost pink. We know that we can always count on him to be where we need him to be when it counts – and to bring a laugh to the bus.

  • Mahesh Babu’s heartfelt shoutout for Saiyaara calls Ahaan and Aneet’s performances ‘effortless’. Says, ‘This one deserves all the love’

Mahesh Babu’s heartfelt shoutout for Saiyaara calls Ahaan and Aneet’s performances ‘effortless’. Says, ‘This one deserves all the love’

In an industry where newcomers often struggle to make their presence felt, Saiyaara has emerged as a refreshing exception — one that’s breaking norms, box office records, and expectations alike. The romantic musical, helmed by Mohit Suri and released in theatres on July 18, has not only struck a chord with audiences but also found a surprise admirer in Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu.

Taking to social media, the actor shared a heartfelt endorsement of the film, calling it “a beautifully made film with honest storytelling, standout performances, and top-notch execution.” Quoting his post from X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Take a bow #Saiyaara team… Big love to #AhaanPanday & #AneetPadda for living their roles so effortlessly… This one deserves all the love coming its way.” The statement has added a new layer of credibility and excitement to what was already being celebrated as a promising debut for its lead stars.

    A Dream Realised on Debut

At the centre of this cinematic wave is Ahaan Panday — nephew of actor Chunky Panday — who makes his big screen debut as Krish, a passionate singer with a turbulent past. Alongside him is Aneet Padda, playing Vaani, a character navigating heartbreak, renewal, and self-discovery. Together, they breathe life into a narrative that walks the fine line between emotional depth and youthful exuberance.
Their on-screen chemistry, coupled with Mohit Suri’s evocative direction, has turned Saiyaara into more than just a musical — it’s a heartfelt journey of healing, ambition, and rediscovered love. The film follows Vaani as she tries to rebuild her life after being abandoned at the altar, only to cross paths with Krish, a musician nursing emotional wounds of his own. What unfolds is a tender story of connection, resilience, and the courage to love again.

Praise from Peers and Public Alike

Beyond Mahesh Babu, industry voices have been vocal in their admiration. Alia Bhatt, Arjun Kapoor, Neha Dhupia, and Rasha Thadani have shared glowing tributes on social media, while actor Harshvardhan Rane called the film “a melodious love story that shatters all formulas.” Even filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga reportedly sent director Mohit Suri a personal message after watching the film.
According to Sacnilk, Saiyaara opened with an impressive ₹21 crore, followed by ₹24 crore on day two. With the weekend closing in, the film is projected to touch ₹73 crore — numbers that many seasoned stars would envy in today’s challenging box office climate. Produced under the Yash Raj Films banner, the film has also secured a digital home with Netflix, although the OTT release date is yet to be confirmed. This move is expected to widen its reach, especially among young audiences resonating with its chart-topping music and modern emotional themes.

  • Syria’s armed Bedouins withdraw from Druze-majority city after weeklong fighting

Syria’s armed Bedouins withdraw from Druze-majority city after weeklong fighting

MAZRAA, Syria — MAZRAA, Syria (AP) — Syria’s armed Bedouin clans announced Sunday they had withdrawn from the Druze-majority city of Sweida following weeklong clashes and a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, as humanitarian aid convoys started to enter the battered southern city.

The clashes between militias of the Druze religious minority and the Sunni Muslim clans killed hundreds and threatened to unravel Syria’s already fragile postwar transition. Israel also launched dozens of airstrikes in the Druze-majority Sweida province, targeting government forces who had effectively sided with the Bedouins.

The clashes also led to a series of targeted sectarian attacks against the Druze community, followed by revenge attacks against the Bedouins.

A series of tit-for-tat kidnappings sparked the clashes in various towns and villages in the province, which later spread to Sweida city, the provincial capital. Government forces were redeployed to halt renewed fighting that erupted Thursday, before withdrawing again.

Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who has been perceived as more sympathetic to the Bedouins, had tried to appeal to the Druze community while remaining critical of the militias. He later urged the Bedouins to leave the city, saying that they “cannot replace the role of the state in handling the country’s affairs and restoring security.”

“We thank the Bedouins for their heroic stances but demand they fully commit to the ceasefire and comply with the state’s orders,” he said in an address broadcast Saturday.

Dozens of armed Bedouin fighters alongside other clans from around the country who came to support them remained on the outskirts of the city and were cordoned off by government security forces and military police. They blame the clashes on the Druze factions loyal to spiritual leader Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri and accuse them of harming Bedouin families.

“We will not leave until he turns himself in alongside those with him who tried to stir sedition. And only then will we go home.” Khaled al-Mohammad, who came to the southern province alongside other tribesman from the eastern Deir al-Zour province, told The Associated Press.

The Bedouins’ withdrawal brought a cautious calm to the area, with humanitarian convoys on their way. The Syrian Red Crescent said Sunday it sent 32 trucks loaded with food, medicine, water, fuel and other aid, after the fighting left the province with power cuts and shortages.

Syria’s state news agency SANA reported that the convoy entered Sweida on Sunday, but accused al-Hijri and his armed Druze supporters of turning back a government delegation that accompanied another convoy.

The Foreign Ministry in a statement said the convoy accompanying the delegation had two ambulances loaded with aid provided by local and international organizations.

Al-Hijri did not directly respond to the accusations but said in a statement that he welcomes any assistance for Sweida and slammed what he claims were distorted campaigns against him.

“We reaffirm that we have no dispute with anyone on any religious or ethnic basis,” the statement read. “Shame and disgrace be upon all those who seek to sow discord and hatred in the minds of young people.”

The U.N. International Organization for Migration said 128,571 people were displaced during the clashes, including 43,000 on Saturday alone.

Washington’s special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, said the clashes and atrocities “overshadowed” an initial cautious optimism about the country’s post-war transition and the international community’s lifting of sanctions.

“All factions must immediately lay down their arms, cease hostilities and abandon cycles of tribal vengeance,” Barrack said on X. “Syria stands at a critical juncture — peace and dialogue must prevail — and prevail now.”

Among those killed in the weeklong fighting were dozens of Druze civilians slain in a series of targeted attacks in the city at the hands of Bedouin fighters and government forces. Videos surfaced online of fighters destroying portraits of Druze religious officials and notables in homes, and shaving the mustaches of elderly Druze, seen as an insult to culture and tradition. Druze militias in return attacked Bedouin-majority areas in the outskirts of the province, forcing families to flee to neighboring Daraa province.

More than half of the roughly 1 million Druze worldwide live in Syria. Most of the other Druze live in Lebanon and Israel, including in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War and annexed in 1981.

Syria’s Druze largely celebrated the downfall of the Assad family that ended decades of tyrannical rule. While they had concerns about Al-Sharaa’s de facto Islamist rule, a large number wanted to approach matters diplomatically. Al-Hijri and his supporters, though, have taken a more confrontational approach with Al-Sharaa, contrary to most other influential Druze figures. Critics also note al-Hijri’s previous allegiance to Assad.

However, the recent clashes and sectarian attacks on the minority community have made a growing number of Druze in the area more skeptical about Damascus’ new leadership and more doubtful of peaceful coexistence.

Position changes for 2025/26 Fantasy Premier League

The Scout reveals the 11 players whose position in Fantasy Premier League has been reclassified ahead of 2025/26, and provides analysis.

Matheus Cunha, Omar Marmoush and Jarrod Bowen are among the big names to have been handed a change of position in Fantasy this season.

Manchester United’s new signing Cunha has been reclassified from a forward to a midfielder after moving from Wolverhampton Wanderers over the summer.

The Brazilian is expected to feature as a No 10 in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 set-up, similar to his role for Wolves last season.

Cunha claimed his career-high total of 178 points in the LAST campaign, scoring 15 goals and assisting a further eight.

He could now challenge Bruno Fernandes as the go-to Red Devils’ asset, particularly if he takes a share of the Portuguese’s set-piece duties.

Manchester City’s Marmoush also changes from a forward to a midfielder this season in Fantasy.

The Egyptian predominantly featured as an attacking midfielder after joining Pep Guardiola’s side midway through the previous campaign.

Marmoush was a major all-round influence on Man City’s attack after making his debut in Gameweek 23.

His 49 shots and 27 shots in the box were both team-leading totals during that spell.

Similarly, his eight big chances created – situations where the player is expected to score – were also more than any team-mate.

Bowen, meanwhile, switches from a midfielder to a forward due to his new role under Graham Potter for West Ham United last season.

After taking charge of the Hammers in Gameweek 20, Potter opted for a 3-5-2 formation, with Bowen playing up front.

That proved crucial to the England star’s exceptional second half of 2024/25 Fantasy.

Indeed, Bowen was the fourth top-scoring player in Fantasy from Gameweek 20 onwards, amassing 103 points thanks to eight goals and five assists.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo becomes an FPL midfielder after mostly playing on the left side of the Reds’ attack last season, while Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly becomes a defender.

  • England’s Jess Carter reveals racial abuse at Euro 2025, FA has contacted police

England’s Jess Carter reveals racial abuse at Euro 2025, FA has contacted police

ZURICH — England defender Jess Carter says she has been subject to racial abuse online at the Women’s European Championship.

Carter came in for a lot of criticism for her performance during England’s opening loss to France.

And some of that has crossed the line even as the 27-year-old and the Lionesses have reached the semifinals at Euro 2025.

“From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,” Carter wrote in an emotional post on Instagram on Sunday. “Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don’t agree or think it’s ok to target someone’s appearance or race.”

Carter has made 49 appearances for England and was part of the victorious Euro 2022 squad as well as an integral part of the team that finished runner-up to Spain at the World Cup the following year.

She says she will be taking a step back from social media.

“As ever I am grateful for all of the support from the genuine fans but I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can,” Carted added.

Carter’s teammates immediately responded to her Instagram post with messages of support.

The Football Association has contacted police back in the United Kingdom.

“Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs,” FA CEO Mark Bullingham said. “We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism.

“As soon as we were made aware of the racist abuse Jess received, we immediately contacted UK police. They are in touch with the relevant social media platform, and we are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice.”

Bullingham added that the FA had measures in place to respond quickly as “regrettably, this is not the first time this has happened to an England player.”

Carter plays her club soccer for Gotham FC in the United States, having joined from Chelsea a year ago.

“We are heartbroken and outraged by the racist abuse directed at Jess Carter. Jess is not only a world-class football player — she is a role model, a leader and a valued part of our Gotham FC family,” the New York area-based team said in a statement.

“At Gotham, we believe in a culture of mutual respect and remain committed to building a game — and a community — where everyone feels safe, respected and celebrated. There is no place for racism in our sport.”

England plays Italy in the semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva, after a dramatic comeback against Sweden last week saw the Lionesses win a chaotic penalty shootout. The other semifinal pits Spain against Germany on Wednesday.

“Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won’t have to deal with it,” Carter said. “We have made some historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all.

“I’m now looking forward and focusing on putting all my energy into helping my team.”
