Smurf your voice: Global campaign urges everyone to speak up for a better future

Launched in June, the eight-week digital campaign draws on the enduring popularity of the beloved Smurfs to encourage young people – along with their parents and caregivers – to raise their voices on issues that matter to them.

The initiative is part of the UN’s ActNow effort for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aims to empower individuals, especially children, to speak out and take action in their communities.

    Voices for change

Featuring Rihanna, Hannah Waddingham, Billie Lourd and Amy Sedaris – who voice various characters in an upcoming Smurfs film – the campaign includes vibrant public service announcements (PSAs) and colourful social media cards.

The Smurfs know the importance of speaking up and speaking out because everyone, every child, has the right to be heard,” said Hannah Waddingham, who voices Jezebeth in the movie.

The power to create change is already inside you. You just have to act,” added Billie Lourd (Worry Smurf).

Amy Sedaris (Jaunty) summed it up simply: “It’s easy if you follow the Smurfs’ blueprint. Small actions can add up to make a big difference.

The videos, produced in multiple formats, direct viewers to a dedicated “Speak Up with the Smurfs” section on the ActNow platform, which offers child-friendly tools and resources.

    Smurfing it up

To smurf things up a bit – campaign invites everyone to “smurf their voice” and help smurf a brighter future, one action at a time. Whether you’re five or fifty-five, there’s always a way to smurf positive change.

In Smurf-speak, “smurf” can mean just about anything – noun, verb, or adjective – but the message here is clear: smurf your voice, smurf your rights, smurf the future.

UNICEF’s involvement centres on ensuring the message reaches children everywhere – and that they are equipped to participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their lives.

    Global rollout

The campaign is being promoted across Paramount Global’s platforms – including CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET, Comedy Central, streaming services like Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and the free-to-air network Net 10 in Australia.

Smurf-themed content will also light up Times Square in New York City and appear in markets across Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Content is available in over a dozen languages, including Arabic, French, Spanish, Hindi, Kiswahili, and Japanese, to ensure broad accessibility.

    About the Smurfs

First introduced in 1958, the Smurfs are small blue fictional characters known for their teamwork, mischief, and unique way of speaking.

Generations of children (like this author and his little ones) have followed their adventures, and their continued appeal has made them ideal messengers for values like cooperation, kindness and now, global citizenship.

By rallying a new generation to speak up – or smurf up – the campaign hopes to inspire meaningful, lasting change for children (and adults) everywhere.

  • Trump intensifies trade war with 30pc tariffs on EU and Mexico – World

Trump intensifies trade war with 30pc tariffs on EU and Mexico – World

United States President Donald Trump on Saturday imposed a 30 per cent tariff on imports from Mexico and the European Union beginning on August 1 after weeks of negotiations with the key trading allies failed to reach a more comprehensive trade deal.

The fresh tariffs were announced in separate letters posted on Truth Social on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Trump issued new tariff announcements for a number of countries, including Japan, South Korea, Canada and Brazil, as well as a 50pc tariff on copper.

The EU had hoped to reach a comprehensive trade agreement with the US for the 27-country bloc.

It had been bracing for the letter from Trump outlining his planned duties on the United States’ largest trade and investment partner after a broadening of his tariff war in recent days.

The EU initially hoped to strike a comprehensive trade agreement, including zero-for-zero tariffs on industrial goods, but months of difficult talks have led to the realisation that it will probably have to settle for an interim agreement and hope something better can still be negotiated.

The 27-country bloc is under conflicting pressures as powerhouse Germany urged a quick deal to safeguard its industry, while other EU members, such as France, have said EU negotiators should not cave into a one-sided deal on US terms.

Trump’s cascade of tariff orders since returning to the White House has begun generating tens of billions of dollars a month in new revenue for the US government. US customs duties revenue shot past $100 billion in the federal fiscal year through to June, according to US Treasury data on Friday.

EU warns of ‘countermeasures’, Italy to remain focused on trade talks

The EU is prepared to take the necessary steps to safeguard its interests if the US proceeds with the 30pc tariff on European goods, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

Von der Leyen, who heads the EU’s executive arm, said in a statement that the bloc remained ready “to continue working towards an agreement by Aug 1”.

“Few economies in the world match the European Union’s level of openness and adherence to fair trading practices,” she continued. “We will take all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests, including the adoption of proportionate countermeasures if required.”

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a statement from her office that it is crucial to remain focused on trade negotiations with the United States and avoid further polarisation.

Meloni was confident that a “fair deal” could be reached on tariffs between the European Union and the United States, the statement added.

“Rome fully supports the efforts of the European Commission,” the PM’s office said.

Mexico slams tariffs as ‘unfair deal’

Mexico slammed the 30pc tariffs as an “unfair deal,” according to a government statement.

“We mentioned at the table that it was an unfair deal and that we did not agree,” the Mexican economy and foreign ministries said in a joint statement.

Mexico is already in negotiations seeking an alternative to tariffs that would protect businesses and jobs on both sides of the border, the ministries added, saying they hope to avoid the duties.

Mexico is one of the countries most vulnerable to the Republican leader’s tariffs, with 80pc of its exports destined for the United States, its largest trading partner.

  • North Korea’s Kim Jong Un restates unconditional support for ‘all’ Russian actions in Ukraine

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un restates unconditional support for ‘all’ Russian actions in Ukraine

    CNN
     —

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un restated he “unconditionally” supports all Russian actions during its war in Ukraine, as he welcomed Moscow’s top diplomat to a newly built beach resort on his country’s east coast.

Kim met Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the North Korean city of Wonsan, at a time when Pyongyang is being pulled deeper into the three-year conflict.

During the meeting, Kim reaffirmed his government’s commitment to “unconditionally support and encourage all measures” that Russia takes in Ukraine, the Associated Press reported, citing the official Korean Central News Agency.

Photos released by Russia’s Foreign Ministry showed the two men smiling and shaking hands, and sitting across from each other at a small circular table in the cabin of a yacht.

Lavrov’s trip comes at a crucial time for Russian-North Korean relations, with Pyongyang set to deploy an additional 25,000 to 30,000 soldiers to assist Moscow’s scaled-up assault on Ukraine, according to Ukrainian intelligence – adding to the estimated 11,000 soldiers Pyongyang sent last year.

It also comes as the United States has grown increasingly frustrated with Russia. US President Donald Trump has accused his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin of throwing “bullsh*t” at peace talks, and pledged more support for Kyiv.

The trip could further strengthen an alliance that has the potential to reshape not only the war but the security dynamic in Asia.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry posted on X that Putin sent “his warm greetings” to Kim, “and reaffirms commitment to all the previous agreements.”

Lavrov, who arrived in North Korea on Friday for a three-day visit, also met with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son Hui in Wonsan Saturday, Russia’s foreign ministry said on Telegram.

“We exchanged views on the situation surrounding the Ukrainian crisis,” Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russian state media agency TASS at a press conference following that meeting. “Our Korean friends confirmed their firm support for all the objectives of the special military operation, as well as for the actions of the Russian leadership and armed forces.”

Choe visited Moscow for the first round of strategic talks in November 2024, according to TASS. At the time, Lavrov praised what he called “very close contacts” with the North Korean military and intelligence services.

At the start of his meeting with Choe, Lavrov said he hoped Russian tourists would soon be able to visit the Wonsan resort, opened last month and hailed by state media as a “national treasure-level tourism city.”

“I am sure that Russian tourists will be increasingly eager to come here. We will do everything we can to facilitate this, creating conditions for this, including air travel,” Lavrov said, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

According to KCNA, Kim personally cut the ribbon on the sprawling Kalma beachside resort with waterparks, high-rise hotels, and accommodation for nearly 20,000 guests – a sweeping display of extravagance in one of the world’s most reclusive nations.

The Kalma beach resort is next to an international airport, another indication the project is aimed at attracting foreign currency.

Last year, small groups of Russian tourists visited North Korea for three-day ski holidays at Maskiryong resort, which has been a long-standing tourist attraction since its opening in December 2013.

Despite sustaining heavy battlefield losses, North Korea has become increasingly integrated into Russia’s war. An estimated 4,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in Russia, according to Western officials.

On the ground in the Russian border region of Kursk, where North Korean soldiers helped repel Ukraine’s incursion last year, the reclusive state’s soldiers are reportedly living in dugouts, fighting – and dying – alongside Russian troops.

Satellite images obtained by CNN showed cargo planes and troop transport ships moving between North Korea and Russia, hinting at major military logistics underway.

Facing shortages on the front line, even as its own factories work round-the-clock, Russia has become reliant on North Korea for additional weaponry.

Training manuals for North Korean artillery have been translated into Russian, in a sign of both the ubiquity of the weapons and the increasing interoperability between Moscow’s and Pyongyang’s armed forces. A report from 11 UN member states last month said that Pyongyang sent at least 100 ballistic missiles and 9 million artillery shells to Russia in 2024.

Russia has intensified its aerial assault on Ukraine in recent weeks. Ukrainian officials said Saturday that Russia had overnight launched its second largest aerial assault on the country since the beginning of Moscow’s invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia had launched 26 cruise missiles and 597 drones in the attack, killing at least two people in the western city of Chernivtsi. Most of the drones and over 20 missiles were “neutralized,” he said.

Russian attacks in Ukraine continued into the daytime on Saturday, with a further eight people killed in various parts of the country, according to regional officials.

On Wednesday, Moscow launched a record 728 drones and 13 missiles. The next day, Russian drones attacked the capital Kyiv from all directions in an apparent new tactic that tested Ukraine’s strained defenses.

  • IFSC CLIMBING WORLD CUP CHAMONIX 2025: WHAT THE ATHLETES SAID

IFSC CLIMBING WORLD CUP CHAMONIX 2025: WHAT THE ATHLETES SAID

The IFSC Climbing World Cup in Chamonix, France hosted competitors from around the world at this year’s fifth Speed World Cup and fourth Lead World Cup competition. Here’s what some of the top-performing athletes had to say following each round.

    LEAD QUALIFICATIONS

    Alex Megos of Germany

“For now qualification is okay. I think it’s really good this time that you don’t have to top both routes in Chamonix to be through to semis.

“The routes, I mean I’ve only climbed one so far, but it’s really good. Good route setting so far.”

    Lucija Tarkus of Slovenia

“I was pretty nervous before the start because it was my first Lead competition of the year, and I focussed more on Boulder for the first part of the season, so I wasn’t fully confident with my Lead performance.

“I made a bit of a stupid mistake on the first one and I knew I have to climb really high on the second route, and I’m really happy that I did it I feel it.”

    SPEED QUALIFICATIONS

    Amir Maimuratov of Kazakhstan

“Chamonix is a magic place for me, I had my very first final here. This place has very fresh air, a great atmosphere and everyone seems to be going very fast as they are very hungry after Kraków.

“Having a World Cup so quickly after the last one, there are a lot of people that are angry because they lost and want to show their best, so it made it a fast round.”

    Gilles Meili of Switzerland

“It feels only half good because on the 5.3 qualification run my Tomoa skip was very bad, so the first half of the route was very slow for me, but then I managed to push out in the second half of the route.”

“I’ll do the World Champs, and if the time to make finals is similar to [the Chamonix times] my goal would be to make finals. If I get a clean run I can do a 5.1 and there is still a lot of time to go until the event so I think I can only get faster.”

    Isis Rothfork of USA

“I’m very happy with my qualification because Kraków was bad. I was kind of stressed going into this comp and I changed my goals a little bit. I wanted the emphasis on good, quality runs over just being fast and I was able to do well by my standards. I changed how I was thinking, not how I was climbing.”

“I had some good training before this in Switzerland, and it’s always nice to have good times in training going into a comp but with Speed you can have good times and a bad comp, so I think my mental switch was more key than anything else.”

“I’ll just try and take it one step at a time. I’ve never won a race in finals so to PB in the competition and win a race would be nice.”

    Beatrice Colli of Italy

“I was surprised with 7.03 I was 14th, it’s crazy, everyone is going so fast now.”

“I’m happy because Chamonix is always the best place to compete and before qualification, I was feeling great and wanted to do my best. I couldn’t do my best though because I had bad reaction time as I was thinking too much about a false start.”

  • Prehistoric animal found that lived on Earth 259 million years ago

Prehistoric animal found that lived on Earth 259 million years ago

A new fossil skull, dug out of purple siltstone in northern China, belongs to a creature that walked the planet about 259 million years ago. The animal was named Yinshanosaurus angustus, and the find helps fill a gap in the family tree of large plant‑eating reptiles that roamed just before the greatest die‑off in Earth’s history.

    Unearthing Yinshanosaurus angustus

Dr. Jian Yi and Dr. Jun Liu of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IVPP), compared two well‑preserved specimens from Shanxi and Inner Mongolia.

Both fossils include almost complete skulls, giving researchers a rare full view of the head and much of the spine.

“Pareiasauria are a bizarre herbivorous clade of tetrapods that existed in the Guadalupian and Lopingian and were victims of both the Late Capitanian and the end‑Permian mass extinction events,” reminded Liu.

The more complete of the two skulls measures 10 inches long yet barely 4 inches wide across the cheeks, the narrowest head known for any pareiasaur.

That unusual shape is not the only odd trait. The snout is as wide as it is high, the frontal bone is slender and twice as long as it is wide, and the upper‑jaw teeth stand almost vertical instead of tilting backward as in relatives.

What on Earth is a pareiasaur?

A pareiasaur is a stocky, barrel‑bodied tetrapod that carried a tiny tail and a head often ringed with bony knobs. Most species topped out at about 8 feet long and weighed as much as today’s American bison.

They thrived across the late Permian period, serving as key plant chompers in ecosystems from South Africa to Russia. Their success ended abruptly when roughly 90 percent of marine species and 70 percent of land vertebrates vanished at the close of the era.

Yinshanosaurus angustus foraged on the northern shoulder of Pangea, the single landmass that stitched together today’s continents.

At the time, the interior of the supercontinent swung between searing summers and bitter winters, pressuring animals to adapt or disappear.

China’s Naobaogou and Sunjiagou formations capture that turbulent landscape in stacked mudstones and siltstones.

Periodic floods buried carcasses quickly enough to preserve delicate skeletal links, a stroke of luck for modern paleontologists.

    Clues written in bone

Yi and Liu spotted a forked rear projection on the nasal bone and a notch in the tabular bone at the back of the skull, features never seen together before.

They also noticed a U‑shaped paraoccipital process that differs from the V‑shaped version in close cousins.

“The skeleton of Yinshanosaurus angustus provides the complete cranial and articulated postcranial details of Chinese pareiasaurs for the first time,” added Jian Yi after months of lab preparation.

Using 183 anatomical characters, the team ran computer analyses that split Chinese pareiasaurs into three distinct branches, placing the new taxon beside Shihtienfenia completus within a fresh sub‑group.

    Why the Permian still matters

The Permian ended with volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia, pumping out enough carbon dioxide to warm oceans by at least 14°F.

That spike drove ocean anoxia, acid rain, and habitat collapse, setting the stage for the dinosaurs that would follow in the Triassic.

Each newly described pre‑extinction species sharpens models of how ecosystems responded to rising heat and disrupted carbon cycles.

Because pareiasaurs sat low on the land food chain, they reflect the health of primary plant production more directly than predators do.

From dig site to digital tree

CT scans of the Shanxi skull reveal replacement tooth buds waiting beneath worn crowns, confirming lifelong dental turnover like that in modern lizards.

The scans also expose internal canals that once carried blood vessels to horn‑like bosses, suggesting seasonal growth tied to mating display or species recognition

Digital models of those structures feed into the expanding open database hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

By pooling 3‑D files from separate labs, researchers can test competing family trees without moving fragile fossils across borders.

    Yinshanosaurus angustus and the future

Work now shifts to beds just above the current fossil horizon, layers that may hold early Triassic survivors or fresh victims of the end‑Permian crisis.

Liu’s group plans a targeted survey during the next field season, armed with drone‑based photogrammetry to map promising outcrops.

The team also hopes to sample bone collagen, if any remains, for stable‑isotope studies that could reveal diet and seasonal water stress.

Combined with climate models, those data might show whether narrow‑snouted herbivores had a feeding edge in arid late Permian landscapes.

Understanding how a mid‑sized, flat‑snouted browser fit into the pre‑extinction puzzle helps scientists refine the timeline of faunal turnover.

Each added piece, however small, tests broader ideas about resilience and collapse as Earth’s systems tip past critical thresholds.

Pixel VPN by Google update brings Material 3 Expressive tweaks

A small update to Pixel VPN by Google is rolling out that adds Material 3 Expressive and makes some tweaks to the Quick Settings Tile.

About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.

For starters, the first line of the QS Tile goes from just “VPN” to “VPN by Google,” with both lines now saying that. Visually, that’s a bit strange, but strings suggest how that second line will soon add a “subtitle” with various status messages:

    • Always on
    • Always on: Long press for options
    • Connected
    • Connecting
    • Disabled
    • Paused
    • Error

This change is not rolled out yet, or might be coming with a server-side update. On Android 16 QPR1, you can of course reduce the size to 1×1.

Inside the app, Google Sans Flex is now leveraged, while the latest M3 Expressive header is now used. The latest Material 3 toggle is also in use with an ‘x’ and checkmark in the circular handle.

Version 1.0.770303564 of Pixel VPN by Google with the Material 3 Expressive tweaks is rolling out via the Play Store. It’s not yet widely rolled out.
