Senne Lammens: Man Utd to sign Royal Antwerp keeper for £18.1m

United boss Amorim began the season with question marks over who would be his first-choice goalkeeper.

Bayindir’s error against Arsenal on the opening day only added to that, and despite playing all three Premier League games this season, another mistake against Burnley on Saturday put the club under pressure to sign a goalkeeper.

Last season’s number one, Andre Onana, has had a turbulent two years at United since his £47.2m transfer from Inter Milan in 2023.

His only appearance so far this campaign came in the cup exit last week, when he saved only one of 12 penalties in the decisive shootout.

Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic called him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in United’s history before a 2-2 draw against Lyon last season – with Onana again at fault for both goals.

Amorim elected to drop the Cameroon international for the next game against Newcastle United.

Lammens’ imminent arrival adds to a busy deadline day at Old Trafford.

Antony is expected to complete a move to Real Betis, Jadon Sancho is set to head to Aston Villa on loan and Rasmus Hojlund is on his way to Napoli.

However, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to stay at United.

The England midfielder, 20, wants a loan move after seeing his appearances limited.

Mainoo, who has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad, featured as a substitute in United’s 3-2 win over Burnley on Saturday.

  • 2025 Lone Star Le Mans

    2025 Lone Star Le Mans

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing returns to FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) action after an eight-week summer break with the Lone Star Le Mans in Austin, Texas on Sunday 7 September.

The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) has established itself as the home of WEC in the United States and hosts a round for the eighth time. It is one of only two circuits on the current calendar, alongside Qatar, at which TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has yet to win.

Mike Conway is unable to participate at COTA after injuring his collar bone in a training accident last week. His place alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Nyck de Vries in the #7 GR010 HYBRID will be taken by José María López, who was originally scheduled to race in Austin with AKKODIS ASP in a Lexus RC F LMGT3.

Sébastien Buemi returns to the #8 GR010 HYBRID with Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa, who competed as a two-driver crew at the last round in Brazil in mid-July. That proved to be a difficult weekend for the team when performance and speed deficits prevented either car challenging at the front.

In Texas, the team hopes for improved circumstances to enable it to compete for its first podium of the season against another strong Hypercar field, which features 18 cars from eight manufacturers.

The 5.513km Circuit of the Americas is, like Interlagos last time out, an anti-clockwise track, characterised by the steep hill up to turn one followed by a sequence of sweeping, fast corners which create a spectacular opening sector, followed by tighter, more technical corners later in the lap.

Finding the right car set-up is particularly challenging in Austin due to the mix of different corners, as well as one of the heaviest breaking zones of the season, when cars decelerate from over 300km/h to around 60km/h for the tight turn 12.

Drivers get their first chance to optimise their GR010 HYBRIDs at COTA when practice begins on Friday with two 90-minute free practice sessions. After a one-hour final practice on Saturday, Hypercar qualifying takes place at 3.40pm (10.40pm CEST) to determine the grid for Sunday’s race, which begins at 1pm (8pm CEST).

Kamui Kobayashi (Team Principal and driver, car #7):

“It’s always great fun to race in America because the fans are so welcoming, and they really love motorsports. There is a different atmosphere around the track and it’s something I really enjoy. The Circuit of the Americas is a fantastic circuit, really nice to drive, and I can’t wait to be on track again in our GR010 HYBRID. As a team we’ve had a few weeks to analyse what happened in Brazil and we want to come back much stronger in Austin. Of course, we are all disappointed that Mike cannot join us in the #7 car, but José has proved he is a very capable substitute. As well as wishing Mike a quick recovery, I would like to say a big thanks to AKKODIS ASP for their support in allowing José to step in.”

José María López (Driver, car #7):

“I’m sad for Mike, who is a great friend, and I know he is so disappointed that he cannot race in Austin. I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery. It’s an unexpected opportunity for me to work with everyone in the team again, and I am sure it will be just like old times very quickly. I feel ready for the challenge, and I will give everything to get a strong result with Kamui and Nyck.”

Nyck de Vries (Driver, car #7):

“Naturally we will miss Mike, but we know José well, and he’s the ideal replacement. We were very competitive last year at COTA and, of course, we hope to have a similar performance this weekend, but we know it won’t be easy. We need to execute a clean weekend and maximise our performance in all areas. As a team we have performed well this season, even though the results have not been what we wanted. We will all be pushing to be at the right end of the grid this time.”

    Sébastien Buemi (Driver, car #8):

“I’m looking forward to joining up with Brendon, Ryo and the whole team again in Austin. It felt a bit strange watching them race in Brazil without me, but I was following everything, and I could see how hard everyone was pushing despite the difficult circumstances. Hopefully we are in a much better position this weekend so we can fight at the front again.”

    Brendon Hartley (Driver, car #8):

“As a team we’re all ready to get back racing after a long gap since Brazil, and we’re very motivated to challenge at the front in Austin. It’s a fun track to drive, with some fast sections and also some technical parts, so it’s not easy to find the right compromise on set-up. That means free practice will be very important to set us on the right course for the rest of the weekend.”

    Ryo Hirakawa (Driver, car #8):

“I enjoyed racing in Austin for the first time last year, even though we didn’t get the best result on our car in the end. The track is exciting to drive and very challenging for a driver, so I’m looking forward to racing there again. The whole team wants to get back on the podium as soon as possible and, even though we know it will be tough, we are all pushing for that this weekend.”

Athletic beat Betis to continue perfect Liga start

    SEVILLE:

Athletic Bilbao won 2-1 at Real Betis on Sunday to pull level with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

Marc Bartra deflected a cross into his own net before Aitor Paredes pounced for Athletic’s second, as the Basque side won their third match in a row to maintain their perfect start.

Cedric Bakambu nodded home in stoppage time to give Betis brief hope at La Cartuja stadium in Seville, where they are playing while their Benito Villamarin home is redeveloped, but they could not find a late leveller.

“We go into the international break very happy, with nine points from nine available,” said Athletic defender Yuri Berchiche.

Earlier third-place Villarreal were held to a 1-1 draw by Celta Vigo as the Yellow Submarine dropped their first points of the campaign.

Champions Barcelona visit Rayo Vallecano later Sunday, also looking to preserve their 100 percent start to the season.

  • Eisai’s Leqembi unlocks at-home dosing with FDA autoinjector approval

Eisai’s Leqembi unlocks at-home dosing with FDA autoinjector approval

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a once-weekly autoinjector version of Eisai’s Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi (lecanemab), as the company seeks to grow the medicine’s uptake amid reimbursement struggles.

The new injection, which will be known under the brand name Leqembi IQLIK, will be available to early Alzheimer’s patients who are moving onto maintenance dosing, having already received the drug intravenously (IV) every two weeks for 18 months. Leqembi IQLIK will be launched in the US in October 2025.

The FDA approved the 360mg autoinjector as another option for maintenance dosing of the beta-amyloid blocker, with patients currently remaining on intravenous infusions dropping down to a once-monthly dose of 10mg/kg. The once-monthly IV dosing regimen was approved by the FDA in February 2025.

Overseeing regulatory submissions for Leqembi, Eisai was initially supposed to file the biologics licence application (BLA) for the autoinjector in March 2024, but the FDA requested more immunogenicity data, leading to a delay in filing. The company eventually initiated the rolling submission in May 2024.

In a joint statement, Eisai and commercial partner Biogen said the autoinjector’s approval allows patients to receive the therapy at home while on a maintenance dose, negating the need to visit an infusion centre. The pen’s availability for a subset of patients also increases infusion capacity for new patients to begin treatment.

Leqembi is now the only approved amyloid-based therapy for Alzheimer’s that can be administered at home. Equipped with just a 15-second injection time, it marks a steep reduction from the one hour it usually takes for an infusion.

The FDA based its decision on results from the Phase III CLARITY AD (NCT03887455) study that demonstrated no efficacy difference between patients switching onto the autoinjector pen after 18 months of the initiation dose.

Leqembi was the spearhead in a new generation of Alzheimer’s drugs that slow disease progression. Eisai and Biogen enjoyed market dominance upon Leqembi’s approval in 2023, though this was ended when Eli Lilly received FDA approval for Kisunla (donanemab) in 2024. Both drugs are approved in the same Alzheimer’s indication, though they have different mechanisms of action.

Leqembi targets small chains of linked-up beta-amyloid proteins called protofibrils, which in turn prevent amyloid buildup. Meanwhile, Kisunla only targets the beta-amyloid plaques.

However, both sets of companies have struggled for uptake of their medications amid their high prices. Reimbursement regulators across many countries have shunned the medication, saying the costs associated with administering the drug do not outweigh its benefits.

Eisai has previously stated particularly slow uptake in the US, hampered by infusion logistics and diagnosis constraints.

Nevertheless, Eisai is hoping Leqembi will generate Y250bn to Y280bn ($1.7bn to $1.9bn) in sales in its 2027 fiscal year.

Analysis by GlobalData’s Pharma Intelligence Center forecasts sales of $1.5bn in 2027 and $2.2bn in 2028.

  • Netflix New Releases: September 2025

    Netflix New Releases: September 2025

The concluding part of season two of Wednesday; the story of Charlie Sheen’s redemption; a clash between the two greatest super middleweights in the world; an A-list crime drama starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman; a lavish period drama from the creator of Peaky Blinders; and the third season of one of the most talked-about Japanese sci-fi shows are among the highlights of the new film and TV projects hitting Netflix in September.

Starting the month off strong is part two of season two of Wednesday, that hits Netflix on Sept. 3. There’s no need to introduce this absolute monster hit for the streamer, as seemingly everyone is watching — the first half of Wednesday season two delivered 50 million views worldwide, the most views for an English-language show’s opening week on the streamer since season one of Wednesday. Part two kicks off with “Hide and Woe Seek,” the thirteenth episode in total of the series, and we pick up the action after our titular heroine was unceremoniously defenestrated by Tyler.

On Sept. 10, Netflix debuts a Charlie Sheen documentary that is sure to dominate the discourse online. The two-parter aka Charlie Sheen recounts the once-troubled tabloid regular’s life and career, from the professional highs of a respected film and TV career, to the lows of the “tiger blood” public meltdown era, and finally the path to sobriety and the semblance of normalcy. The talking heads involved include ex-wife Denise Richards, Heidi Fleiss, Jon Cryer, Sean Penn, Ramon Estevez, Brooke Mueller, and Chris Tucker. The doc comes from Andrew Renzi, who directed Netflix’s docuseries Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?

Live sports is very much a regular thing on Netflix now, and this month’s boxing main event is the hotly anticipated fight between Mexico’s Canelo “Cinnamon” Álvarez and American Terence “Bud” Crawford. Streaming live from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sept. 13, the fight is dubbed “Once in a Lifetime” and sees the two greatest super middleweights fighting today for the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring undisputed super middleweight titles.

Netflix’s big crime drama for this month is the starry Black Rabbit, which stars Jason Bateman and Jude Law as the leads and debuts on Sept. 18. The show tells the story of a pair of estranged siblings who reconnect when the troubled brother (Bateman) brings the chaos that follows him and threatens the other brother’s successful nightspot. Written by Zach Baylin, the scribe behind Justin Kurzel’s excellent Law-starring feature The Order, and co-writer of the less excellent reboot of The Crow, the series also stars Cleopatra Coleman, Amaka Okafor, Sope Dirisu, Dagmara Domińczyk, Chris Coy, Abbey Lee, Odessa Young and Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur.

Sept. 25 sees the launch of House of Guinness, a lavish new British period drama from Netflix. Hailing from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, House of Guinness goes inside the drama and heartache of the Guinness brewing family. The action centers on the Irish and New York wings of the family around the 19th century and concerns itself with the fate of the four children of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man who really expanded the family’s wealth and business empire. Expect wondrous sets and costumes, as well as classically trained actors reallying earning their money. The series stars Louis Partridge as Edward Guinness, Anthony Boyle as Arthur Guinness, Emily Fairn as Anne Guinness and Fionn O’Shea as Benjamin Guinness and the cast also includes talented thesps David Wilmot, James Norton, Jack Gleeson, Niamh McCormack, Seamus O’Hara, Dervla Kirwan, Michael McElhatton, Danielle Galligan, Hilda Fay and Cassian Bilton.

This month’s international gem on Netflix is the eagerly anticipated third season of Japanese sci-fi drama series Alice in Borderland, which also launches on Sept. 25. Based on Haro Aso’s manga series of the same name, the series tells the story of two young people trapped in an empty parallel version of Tokyo, where they have to survive by competing in increasingly dangerous games. That brief description is not really doing the show justice, but strong critical praise, and word-of-mouth has seen Alice in Borderland become a sleeper hit for Netflix. The series was co-written and directed by Shinsuke Sato and stars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya as the leads. Well worth a watch if you’re interested in the survival genre or cleverly made dramas.

Movies added to Netflix in September include 10 Things I Hate About You, Idiocracy, Sweet Home Alabama, 8 Mile, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Billy Madison, The Boy Next Door, Boyz n the Hood, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Bridesmaids, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Chicken Run, Dennis the Menace, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Edge of Tomorrow, Escape Room, Good Advice, Hot Shots!, Hot Shots! • New 3D Model Detects Corrosion, Cracking in Nuclear Reactors

New 3D Model Detects Corrosion, Cracking in Nuclear Reactors

Engineers and scientists prioritize building safe and efficient nuclear reactors. Thanks to a team of MIT researchers, these scientists now have a powerful tool to achieve that. MIT researchers pioneered a method for watching materials degrade in real time in a simulated nuclear environment. According to the team, the breakthrough allows them to observe how corrosion and cracking happen.

As a result, researchers could design more resilient materials that extend a reactor’s lifespan.

Monitoring a Nuclear Reactor in Real-Time

The team is led by researchers Ericmoore Jossou and David Simonne. They used strong X-rays to mimic the destructive effects of neutrons on materials inside a reactor. According to the researchers, they focused a beam onto a sample of nickel, a common metal found in reactor alloys.

Initially, researchers struggled to get the sample right. They stated the nickel would react with the silicon base it was placed on, eventually ruining the experiment. After some trial and error, they found that a thin silicon dioxide buffer solved this problem.

The buffer reportedly had an unexpected but welcoming side effect. Researchers discovered that they could relax the material’s internal strain by keeping the X-ray beam on the sample longer. As a result, the process allowed them to capture accurate, 3D images of the crystal’s structure as it failed.

“If we can improve materials for a nuclear reactor, it means we can extend the life of that reactor,” said Jossou. “It also means the materials will take longer to fail, so we can get more use out of a nuclear reactor than we do now.”

He added, “The technique we’ve demonstrated here allows to push the boundary in understanding how materials fail in real-time.”

This new method departs from the traditional approach of studying material failure after the fact. “Only with this technique can we measure strain with a nanoscale resolution during corrosion processes,” explained Simonne.

The research, published in the journal Scripta Materiala, also yielded a surprising bonus. The team realized they could use the X-ray beam to precisely control the amount of strain in a material. This secondary finding has significant implications for the microelectronics industry, where manipulating strain can enhance a material’s electrical properties.

Looking ahead, the researchers plan to apply their technique to more complex materials like steel and other metal alloys.
