The TAM receptor family, which includes Tyro3, Axl, and MerTK receptors, has potential as a new therapeutic target for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) therapies, according to a new review published in Cell & Bioscience.1
TAM receptors are broadly expressed throughout the body and seen as important regulators of immune homeostasis and inflammatory resolution, the authors explained. Previous research has shown that mice with a TAM deficiency experienced spontaneous chronic inflammation and autoimmune phenomena, which the authors said may be clinical precursors to RA.2
In humans, the investigators noted that TAM receptors serve as a key inhibitory feedback mechanism.1
“Blocking TAM signaling results in severe defects in the clearance of ACs (apoptotic cells), exacerbates systemic inflammation, and induces overactivation of the immune system, thereby contributing to the onset and progression of RA,” the authors wrote.
Activation of TAM receptors, meanwhile, helps restore tissue integrity, in part by suppressing innate immune cell activation, enhancing AC clearance, and promoting tissue repair.
However, the authors said the different TAM receptors have different roles to play in RA. Axl and MerTK have been shown to have protective benefits in RA.3 Tyro3 appears to exacerbate inflammation and joint destruction, they said.
“This functional dichotomy suggests distinct therapeutic strategies: targeted activation of Axl/MerTK pathways may restore immune balance, whereas Tyro3 inhibition could mitigate synovitis and bone erosion,” the authors wrote, adding that a wave of research has been exploring ways to capitalize on our emerging understanding of TAM receptors.1
One possible application is the use of soluble forms of TAM receptors (sTAM) as biomarkers for evaluating RA disease status, the authors said.
“These soluble variants are generated through metalloproteinase-mediated cleavage of the extracellular domains of their membrane-bound counterparts and are markedly elevated in the synovial fluid of RA patients, showing promise as indicators of disease activity, severity, and prognosis,” the authors said.
Studies have shown correlations between different sTAMs and clinical characteristics, including a link between serum sTyro3 levels and systemic inflammation. However, the authors said it will be important to come up with standardized detection methods for sTAMs, which they said require further investigation and validation.
A number of TAM-targeted therapies are currently in clinical development, the authors noted. The focus, they said, is largely on small molecules that can inhibit receptor-ligand binding and/or suppress kinase activity. The investigators said most of the development thus far has centered on oncology indications, but they said the therapies’ mechanisms of action suggest they can potentially be effective in autoimmune diseases.
Approximately 20 small-molecule TAM inhibitors have entered the clinical evaluation phase, of which 15 remain in active commercial development. They said oncological applications of the therapies have centered on using TAM inhibitors to mediate drug resistance as part of combination strategies.
Additionally, the authors said a diverse range of multiple small-molecule TAM inhibitors are also in the preclinical stage.
“These emerging compounds highlight the continuing diversification of TAM-targeting strategies in preclinical development,” they said.
Future therapeutic development in the RA context “should focus on receptor-specific modulators to overcome structural homology challenges and explore combination strategies with existing therapies,” the authors wrote.
The authors said understanding TAM signaling and its correlation with different diseases and stages will be necessary before drug developers can realize the full therapeutic potential of the TAM pathway.

Crude oil futures traded flat to higher as ongoing Russia-Ukraine peace talks and an upcoming OPEC+ meeting kept geopolitical risks and potential output changes in focus.
Brent crude oil futures were flat on Friday and US crude futures rose as drawn-out Russia-Ukraine peace talks kept geopolitical risks elevated and traders kept an eye on Sunday’s OPEC+ meeting for clues about potential output changes.
US West Texas Intermediate crude futures resumed trading after being frozen due to a system outage at exchange operator CME Group, blamed on a cooling issue at CyrusOne data centres. Brent trades on the Intercontinental Exchange, or ICE.
Front-month Brent crude futures for January, which expire on Friday, were up 6 cents, or 0.09 per cent, at $63.40 a barrel at 12:44 p.m. EDT (1744 GMT). The more active February contract changed hands at $63.24, up 37 cents, or 0.59 per cent.
WTI crude traded at $59.47 a barrel, up 82 cents, or 1.4 per cent, from Wednesday’s close. There was no settlement on Thursday due to the Thanksgiving holiday in the US
Longest losing streak since 2023
Despite being up more than 1 per cent for the week, both contracts are headed for a fourth straight monthly loss, their longest losing streak since 2023, as expectations for higher global supply weighed on prices.
The strength of fuel refining profit margins has supported crude demand in some places, but the bearish impact of an expected oil surplus is pressuring prices, said Rystad analyst Janiv Shah.
US oil production rose to record highs in September, data from the Energy Information Administration showed on Friday, deepening concerns that the market is heading towards a surplus.
US crude oil output rose 44,000 barrels per day in September to a record 13.84 million bpd, according to the EIA data.
A Reuters survey of 35 economists and analysts showed respondents expect Brent to average $62.23 per barrel in 2026, down from October’s forecast of $63.15. The benchmark has averaged $68.80 per barrel so far in 2025, LSEG data showed.
Signs that a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia might be close pushed oil prices down sharply earlier this week, but they have recovered over the past three sessions as negotiations dragged on.
“Futures had been anticipating some sort of a peace agreement which has kept pressure on prices,” Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial, said in a note on Friday.
“Still, little is known at this time, and no agreement will likely mean even tighter sanctions on Russia’s oil exports.”
On Sunday, OPEC+ is likely to leave oil output levels unchanged at its meetings and to agree on a mechanism to assess members’ maximum production capacity, two delegates from the group and a source familiar with the group’s talks told Reuters.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, is expected to lower its January crude price for Asian buyers for a second month to its lowest in five years, under pressure from ample supplies and the surplus outlook, sources told Reuters on Friday.

China’s yuan is on its best run in years, but the country’s central bank already looks like it’s trying to tap the brakes.
What does this mean?
The onshore yuan is on track for a fourth straight monthly gain versus the dollar – its longest winning streak in four years – after touching a 13‑month high. Both the onshore and offshore yuan are up solidly this year, by about 3.2% and 3.7% against the dollar as of early Friday. But traders say that strength doesn’t quite square with China’s softer backdrop, with recent data pointing to weak domestic demand and factory activity still under scrutiny. The rally is mostly riding on a broadly weaker dollar, which is heading for its worst week in four months, with thin US Thanksgiving trading exaggerating moves. That leaves the People’s Bank of China in a tricky spot, and it’s pushing back by setting its daily midpoint fix weaker than market models suggest for a second day in a row, using its 2% trading band to lean against further gains.
Why should I care?
For markets:Currency moves are shouting more than the economy is whispering.
The yuan’s climb is coming even as China’s money markets loosen, with the volume‑weighted overnight repo rate down to around 1.29% – its lowest level in more than two years. Easier cash conditions and ongoing policy support usually point to a weaker, not stronger, currency, which is why the PBOC seems wary of letting the yuan run too far. Morgan Stanley reckons the real driver from here will be the dollar and the Fed, and expects the yuan to gradually strengthen toward 7.0 per dollar by mid‑2026, before easing slightly to roughly 7.05 by the end of that year. In the short term, though, traders are zeroing in on November factory data and the upcoming Central Economic Work Conference – two events that could jolt Chinese stocks, bonds, and regional currencies.
The bigger picture:A stronger yuan does not mean a stronger China just yet.
A firmer yuan can help tamp down imported inflation and project confidence, but it can also squeeze exporters at a time when China’s recovery is still fragile. Recent indicators have underscored weak domestic demand, right as policymakers try to shore up growth with targeted easing and looser funding conditions. That tension helps explain why the PBOC seems comfortable with relative currency stability, but not with an unchecked rally driven mainly by a wobbly dollar. For global investors and governments, how China manages that balance between growth, currency control, and capital flows into 2025 and 2026 will influence trade patterns, commodity demand, and how other Asian central banks steer their own exchange rates.
A newly validated noninvasive scoring tool has shown superior performance in identifying metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis (MASH) patients with advanced liver fibrosis, offering a potential step forward in reducing reliance on biopsy and improving risk stratification in the most common chronic liver disease worldwide.1
The findings, published by researchers in Spain in Biomarker Research, confirmed that the BMP8A Fibrosis Score (BFS) more accurately classifies patients with severe fibrosis than several widely used diagnostic algorithms while eliminating the grey-zone results that often complicate clinical decision-making.
Although liver biopsy remains the gold standard for staging fibrosis, it is invasive, costly, and impractical to perform routinely. Existing noninvasive scoring systems, such as the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) Index, NAFLD Fibrosis Score (NFS), Hepamet Fibrosis Score (HFS), and AST-to-Platelet Ratio Index (APRI), are widely used but have limitations, explained the researchers. Many patients fall into intermediate “grey zones,” where results are inconclusive and further testing is required. Variability in sensitivity and specificity across clinical settings further limits their reliability.
Researchers previously identified circulating bone morphogenetic protein 8A (BMP8A) as a promising biomarker after observing that serum levels rise progressively with fibrosis severity.2 Building on these earlier findings, the team developed the BFS, which integrates BMP8A concentration with patient age and platelet count. In its initial derivation study, BFS showed encouraging accuracy in distinguishing advanced fibrosis in patients with biopsy-confirmed MASH.
To validate the score in an independent population, investigators analyzed serum BMP8A levels in 302 patients with MASH across 7 university hospitals in Spain. Of these, 171 had no or mild fibrosis (F0-F2), and 131 had advanced fibrosis (F3–F4). Serum BMP8A concentrations were significantly higher in patients with advanced fibrosis, averaging 339.6 pg/mL compared with 230.5 pg/mL in earlier-stage disease, with a clear stepwise increase across fibrosis stages.
Diagnostic accuracy was assessed using area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curves and compared directly against other noninvasive scores. BMP8A alone had an AUROC of 0.669, while the composite BFS achieved 0.750, outperforming FIB-4 (0.747), HFS (0.723), APRI (0.706), and NFS (0.650). Although not dramatically higher, BFS delivered the strongest overall accuracy and, crucially, provided a single cutoff value of 0.46. Unlike competing scores that rely on dual thresholds and create indeterminate zones, BFS eliminates ambiguous results.
Using that cutoff, BFS correctly classified 70.9% of patients with advanced fibrosis, with a specificity of 80.7% and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 69.7%. Its negative predictive value (NPV) of 71.5% and likelihood ratio profile (LR+ 3.0; LR– 0.5) supported both ruling in and ruling out advanced disease. In contrast, FIB-4 at its commonly used ≥2.67 threshold correctly identified only 63.6% of advanced cases and misclassified a substantial proportion due to false negatives and indeterminate outputs. HFS and APRI performed similarly or worse, especially when restricted to higher cutoffs, and NFS showed the lowest diagnostic utility in this cohort.
By eliminating grey-zone classifications, BFS categorized 63.9% of the cohort as F0–F2 and 36.1% as F3–F4, providing a decisive result in every case. The authors noted that this feature may be particularly important in clinical trial screening, where rapid and reliable fibrosis stratification is required without exposing patients to unnecessary biopsy. The group noted that the multicenter design of their study strengthens generalizability, reflecting diverse patient populations and real-world variability across laboratories and hospitals.
However, the researchers acknowledged limitations of their findings. Because BFS requires ELISA-based measurement of serum BMP8A, it may be costlier and less accessible than scores derived exclusively from routine laboratory data.
“This drawback parallels other specialized biomarkers, such as MACK3, which improve accuracy but require additional assays, sometimes not available in commercial laboratories, as is the case with BFS,” wrote the researchers.
They emphasized that additional validation in broader populations, inter-laboratory reproducibility studies, and commercial assay availability will be necessary before widespread adoption. They also noted that BFS, like other biomarkers, should be interpreted alongside imaging tools such as elastography, which continue to play an expanding role in fibrosis assessment.

The Birdie comes with a replaceable battery that lasts up to 40 minutes, according to the brand.

These are the best teeth whitening strips I’ve tested because they’re effective and easy to use. They’re made with hydrogen peroxide, a bleaching agent, and adhere well to teeth, preventing them from slipping off while you’re wearing them. The Whitestrips come in a pack of 44, enough for 22 treatments: 20 are 45-minute standard treatments, and 2 are 1-hour express treatments.

I swapped my phone’s blaring alarm for the Hatch Restore’s pleasant wake-up call years ago, and I use the device as a noise machine every night, too. The brand’s app lets you customize your rise and rest routines by choosing from different light colors, sunrise durations and sounds, and once you set everything up, you can use buttons on the device to control it, creating a phone-free bedroom. If you buy a Hatch+ membership, you also get access to a content library with bedtime stories, meditations, breathing exercises and more.

Rodriguez, a former preschool teacher, says Magna-Tiles were the number one toy her students fought over. I’ve played with them myself while babysitting and can attest that they’re always a crowd-pleaser. This set comes with 32 magnetic blocks in square and triangular shapes, in a rainbow of colors. Kids can use them to make 3D and 2D structures.

I’ve used this spot cleaner to get coffee, red wine, pet accidents and mud out of light-colored carpets and fabric furniture, so it’s a miracle worker in my book. You fill one of its tanks with water and cleaning solution, then use the nozzle to spray and scrub the stain before suctioning it up. The dirt goes into a separate tank, and the appliance comes with a self-cleaning tool that helps you rinse out its hose after each use.

I take my iced coffee and smoothies on the go in this 42-ounce, dishwasher-safe tumbler. It’s made from stainless steel and has double-wall vacuum insulation, which helps keep drinks hot or cold for hours, in my experience. “I use this Fellow kettle more than any other kitchen appliance I own,” says NBC Select updates editor Mili Godio. “The gooseneck makes pouring extremely precise, and I love that I can set it to the exact temperature I need (and keep it at that temperature, too). Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream is one of my go-to daily moisturizers because it’s gentle on my sensitive skin, never makes me break out and hydrates even the driest, flakiest patches. “I have a variety of face masks in my vanity, but Biodance’s are the only ones I consistently re-buy,” says Rodriguez. “They feel soothing and hydrating the instant I put them on, and leave my skin glowy the next morning.” The sheet masks come individually wrapped in a pack of four and are soaked in a serum made from ingredients like niacinamide, collagen peptides and hyaluronic acid. Once you apply the mask, the serum absorbs into your skin in about three to four hours, at which point it becomes translucent.

Alo’s Warrior Mat is the complete package in my book, and I’ve relied on it during hot yoga, HIIT and pilates classes for years. It’s cushioned enough to protect my body from the hard floor, but not too much that I feel unstable while standing on it. The mat also has a grippy, moisture-wicking surface to prevent sweat from pooling, so I never worry about slipping. It’s oversized, giving me ample room to work out, and on the heavier side, which is one of my favorite parts about it — the Warrior Mat never moves around while I’m jumping or running in place.

How I found The Best Black Friday Deals
All of my recommendations above are based on NBC Select’s previous coverage and reporting, including products the NBC Select staff tested firsthand. I vetted each deal to make sure it’s 20% off or more and highly rated with at least a 4.0-star average rating from hundreds of reviews. When possible, I ran deals through price trackers like CamelCamelCamel to prioritize highlighting products that are at their lowest price in at least three months or lowest price ever.
I also wrote about every deal in this article and worked with NBC Select editors to finalize the live list, which I’m frequently updating throughout Black Friday to reflect the most up-to-date prices. For more information on our editorial team and how we choose products, check out this page.
Why Trust NBC Select?
I’m a reporter for NBC Select who has covered Black Friday deals and sales for over five years. I’ve also written about the history of Black Friday and explained what to buy and what to skip. I’ve appeared in Black Friday-related NBC News NOW broadcast segments and co-hosted a For What It’s Worth livecast episode about the sale, too. Prior to Black Friday, I sorted through sales across retailers to find worthwhile discounts you should know about.

The Federal Reserve’s likely interest rate cut has investors watching closely. Bart Melek, Global Head of Commodity Strategy at TD Securities, stated that the forecasted economic slowdown in 2026 and the Fed’s potential rate reduction are expected to draw investors back into gold. Melek added that gold performs well in low-interest-rate environments.
Recent dovish comments from Fed Governors, including Christopher Waller and John Williams, along with weaker economic data, have heightened expectations for a rate cut next month. Currently, there is an 87% chance of a rate reduction in December, up from 50% last week.
Jim Wyckoff, Senior Analyst at Kitco Metals, noted that the technical chart for silver shows a strong upward trend, attracting speculative buying in the precious metals market.
Weak Demand in Key Asian Markets:
Gold demand in major Asian markets softened this week due to high prices, despite the start of India’s wedding season. In China, the removal of tax exemptions for gold purchases has further impacted consumer demand.
Despite this, platinum and palladium saw strong performances. Platinum increased by 4%, reaching $1,672.50 per ounce, up 10.7% for the week, while palladium rose by 0.8% to $1,450.16, with a 5.6% weekly increase.
This continued surge in precious metal prices highlights growing investor interest amid expectations of a shift in U.S. monetary policy and ongoing market volatility.
The rapid rise of information technology has transformed finance, particularly in the areas of investing (D’Acunto and Rossi 2021), lending (Buchak et al. 2018), and payment services (Higgins 2024). Mobile payments exemplify this shift: by 2024, over 4.3 billion people worldwide used them, with adoption exceeding 80% in many countries, including China, India, Kenya, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, and Tanzania. However, the development is often overlooked because mobile payments typically involve small, everyday transactions and are often linked to existing credit or debit cards in advanced economies.
In Agarwal et al. (2025), we examine the real effects of FinTech by exploiting Singapore’s 2017 nationwide mobile payment rollout. In contrast to prior studies that separately analyse the impact of FinTech on households (Agarwal et al. 2024), merchants (Hau et al. 2024), and financial intermediaries (Buchak et al. 2018), we document how mobile payments simultaneously reshape all three sectors and how cross-sector interactions amplify the overall economic impact. Beyond showing that mobile payments spur small business formation and alter consumer spending habits, we highlight that the aggregate impact depends crucially on how traditional financial institutions, particularly banks, adapt their payment and credit strategies in response to the technology shock.
Singapore’s adoption of QR payment technology and data sources
Singapore offers an ideal setting for studying mobile payments. In 2016, despite 73% smartphone use and 98% banking coverage, only 3% of retailers accepted mobile payments, with cash still used for 60% of transactions. In 2017, the government championed digitalisation to boost efficiency and innovation while banks developed the supporting infrastructure. DBS Bank launched QR code payments in April 2017, enabling low-fee, instant, and secure mobile transactions, which other banks soon adopted. The Association of Banks introduced PayNow on 10 July 2017 for fee-free interbank transfers via mobile or ID numbers, followed by PayNow Corporate in June 2018. By contrast, the US FedNow, launched in July 2023, supports instant transfers but lacks PayNow’s person-to-person feature.
Singapore provides a natural experiment to assess the impact of mobile payments on businesses, consumers, and banks. Using business-level data from Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority and 2016–2018 transaction-level data from 138,448 representative customers of DBS (which served 82% of residents), we find that mobile payment use rose from 8.6% to 33.4%, sign-ups from 31.9% to 47.9%, and transaction values increased by tenfold within a year.
We hypothesise that the widespread adoption of QR payment technology is likely to reshape the business landscape, consumer behaviour, and the retail banking sector. To assess these effects, we compare changes before and after mobile payment adoption between an affected group and a distinct control group, controlling for industry, time, and interaction effects.
Business creation and the adoption of mobile payments
Mobile payment adoption offers the greatest benefits to small, cash-reliant merchants by lowering transaction costs, speeding up payments, improving record-keeping, and reducing cash-handling risks, all of which can drive business growth.
Thus, we compare business entries in consumer-to-business (C2B) and in business-to-business (B2B) industries after the April 2017 adoption of PayNow (C2B mobile payments) but before the June 2018 adoption of PayNow Corporate (B2B mobile payments). We find that entry rates were similar before April 2017 but diverged sharply afterward: C2B entries rose by over 18% relative to B2B, with a cumulative increase of 268% in the 15 months following. Among small firms, the C2B–B2B gap widened from 18% to 24%, while for large firms it fell from 18% to 7.7%. These results hold across industries with both high and low exit rates.
Refinements confirm the pattern: excluding ambiguous sectors strengthened the results, cash-heavy industries and low-income neighbourhoods showed the largest entry gains, and no effects were observed in affluent or tourist districts. The C2B–B2B difference disappeared after June 2018, when PayNow Corporate extended mobile payments to B2B transactions, confirming the C2B-specific effect.
Among DBS clients, 3.7% were self-employed. After mobile payment adoption, they saw 6.9% higher cash inflows, 2.9% higher outflows, 2.9% lower liquidity holdings, and 3% higher spending, all of which are statistically significant. These results suggest that Singapore’s mobile payment rollout enhanced the formation of small businesses, income, and operational efficiency among self-employed merchants.
Consumer responses to the adoption of mobile payments
We next examine consumer responses to mobile payment adoption. Using DBS data, we define affected consumers as adopters of PayLah! (DBS Bank’s digital wallet launched in 2014) between April 2017 and the rollout of PayNow, matched to similar non-adopters via propensity score matching based on pre-2017 demographics and financial information.
From April 2017 to April 2018, adopters showed clear differences:
Mobile payment spending rose by SGD 3.1 per month.
ATM withdrawals declined.
Total and credit card spending increased.
Bill payments were unchanged.
Overall spending rose 4.1% – about SGD 172 monthly (SGD 2,064 annually) per consumer – equivalent to over SGD 100 million in annual aggregate spending in our sample, which was only 5% of the DBS consumer base. Thus, the overall effect is economically substantial.
We find that the spending increase was not driven by income growth and the consumption increase was strongest among previously cash-reliant consumers, suggesting mobile payments eased liquidity constraints and boosted purchases from small merchants. Credit card data also confirmed more frequent and higher-value transactions at small retailers. The increase in credit card spending could be attributed to banks expanding their credit card facilities. We find no signs of impulsive or debt-driven spending emerging, as delinquency rates and spending composition remained stable.
Changes in retail banking strategies
We examine how banks adjusted their retail strategies after the adoption of mobile payments. Before QR payments, approximately 3–3.2 million Singapore residents held cards, but cash still accounted for 60% of transactions. The rise of free mobile payments prompted banks to streamline ATMs and expand credit card offerings.
DBS data show accelerated ATM closures in cash-heavy, low-cost districts, while credit card ownership, number of cards per user, and credit limits all increased: mobile payment users were 1.6% more likely to become cardholders. A comparison of single- versus multi-bank customers suggests that these changes reflect a strategic adaptation to mobile payments, rather than competitive pressure.
Conclusion
FinTech has transformed finance, yet the broader effects of digital payments on consumers, businesses, and banks remain underexplored. Using national business data and DBS transaction records, our study examined Singapore’s rollout of consumer-to-business mobile payments.
Within a year, adoption expanded rapidly, triggering three key shifts: (i) small business formation increased, and self-employed owners experienced higher revenues, lower liquidity needs, and greater spending; (ii) consumers benefited from eased cash constraints and increased total expenditure, using both mobile payments and credit cards as their credit access expanded; and (iii) banks reduced ATM deployment in historically cash-intensive areas while expanding credit provision.
These findings demonstrate the tangible economic impact of low-cost digital payments and highlight the need to study their broader welfare effects.
