  • Julio Rojas Co-Penned Sci-Fi Series ‘Hidden Island’ Screens at Sanfic

Julio Rojas Co-Penned Sci-Fi Series ‘Hidden Island’ Screens at Sanfic

Possibly the most globally appealing series to emerge from Chile in recent years, sci-fi thriller “Hidden Island” (“Isla Oculta”) holds a special screening of its first two episodes at the Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic) on Aug. 18 for festival guests, followed by a public screening on Aug. 21.

Co-penned by Julio Rojas, renowned for his hit serial podcast “Case 63,” alongside Felipe Carmona (“Prison in the Andes”) and Juan M. Dartizio (“An Unknown Enemy”), “Hidden Island” stars Daniela Ramírez, International Emmy-nominated for her performance in HBO Max’s limited series “Isabel: The Intimate Story of Isabel Allende.”

The six-part series follows Fabiola, a detective played by Ramírez, who returns to her hometown in the Chiloé Archipelago to investigate the disappearance of a Mexican archaeology student. As the case unfolds, she must determine whether it’s a straightforward kidnapping – or something far more inexplicable, tied to the legend of Chile’s mythical Friendship Island. Rumors surrounding the island speak of strange disappearances, miraculous healings and possible extraterrestrial activity. Rodrigo Susarte (“Gen Mishima,” “Invunche”) directed all six episodes.

For showrunner Pablo Díaz del Río of Rio Estudios, the project started taking shape six years ago, when he received three different proposals from various writers, all inspired by this legend. “The third one was brought to me by a talented Chilean cinematographer and close friend, Mauro Veloso. It was that version I chose to develop as a producer, and that’s where the project truly began,” he said. Mexico’s Raúl Méndez, who plays the journalist father of the missing student, is also a producer.

As an avid sailor himself, Díaz and his friends set out to find this mythical island one summer, heading towards Kent Island which has similar geolocation coordinates. It took them four days to reach this extremely remote island. While they did not see any extraterrestrials, he admits that strange things happened to them after they thought they saw a person dressed in white on this uninhabited island and the engine of their brand-new zodiac conked out.

Díaz recalls that when Rojas first joined the writers’ room, the first thing he said to them was that they were being too hesitant about discussing extraterrestrial life, that they were holding back too much.

“He said to us: ‘This is a legend that deals with extraterrestrial life and the audience is going to expect answers – or at least for the topic to be addressed without shame or restraint.’”

“That really blew our minds—everyone in the writers’ room—because we had been so cautious not to fall into a fantastical genre that didn’t feel grounded in a meaningful fantasy. We were constantly trying to approach the topic—whether it was extraterrestrial life or existence in another dimension, which could also mean life after physical death—without falling into clichés,” said Díaz, adding: “Julio was a great guide in that regard. He really encouraged us to dive into subjects that usually aren’t so explored in Latin America.”

“And I think we didn’t fall into clichés, that we managed to create a more philosophical, more existential series, with nods to sci-fi,” he noted, adding: “Although we didn’t have the budget to make an ‘Interstellar’ or an ‘Arrival,’ I think we held our own pretty well, given the resources we had.”

“Let’s say the series ends up talking about artificial intelligence and about humanity — about what we’re experiencing as humanity in current times. Fabiola will feel it as a kind of premonition, and she’ll have a vision for the second season, which takes place in the year 2028,” he added.

Principal photography began in October in the Los Ríos region of Chile where they shot for some nine weeks and had to deal with the challenges of rain, frigid temperatures and night shoots. Some interiors were shot at the Rio Studios, which has two sound stages of about 3,767 square feet each, so around 7,535 square feet in total. And they’re building a four-meter-deep (about 13 feet) underwater filming tank, said Díaz.

Rio Estudios is seeking a Mexican co-producer for Season 2, which will likely be set in Mexico. There is a similar mysterious island in Mexico called the Isla Vermeja, according to Díaz.

Backed by state-run agencies CNTV and Corfo, “Hidden Island” is co-produced by Filmo Estudios, the Santiago-based post production/VFX house behind such hits as Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde” and Maite Alberdi’s Oscar-nominated “The Eternal Memory” and her fiction debut, “In Her Place.” Paramount-owned free TV network Chilevisión is set to air the series locally.

Miami-based MGE, run by Esperanza Garay, is also a co-producer. The search is underway for an international distributor and platform.

The 21st Sanfic runs Aug 17-24.

Gandalf, Frodo Return in Andy Serkis’ LOTR Movie

According to Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis‘ upcoming “Lord of the Rings” movie, “The Hunt for Gollum,” will feature some familiar faces.

During a “LOTR” panel at London’s For Love of Fantasy event on Sunday (via Entertainment Weekly), McKellen — who played the powerful wizard Gandalf in the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies — said that Gandalf and Frodo will be part of “The Hunt for Gollum.”

“I hear there’s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum and it’s all about Gollum,” McKellen said of “The Hunt for Gollum.”

He added, “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: there’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s another character called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!”

McKellen did not explicitly say he would be playing Gandalf, or if Elijah Wood would be reprising his role as Frodo. However, Wood was present at the event, as were other “Lord of the Rings” stars including Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd and John Rhys-Davies.

Variety has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.

“Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is set for a December 2027 release after originally being slated for 2026. Serkis, who played Gollum in the “LOTR” films, is directing in addition to playing the beloved monster. The movie is being produced by original “LOTR” trilogy director Peter Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

  • Taiwanese American puts groovy spins on classic Hokkien songs

Taiwanese American puts groovy spins on classic Hokkien songs

Taipei, Aug. 18 (CNA) To Shinyi Lee (李欣怡), Hokkien Taiwanese music needed an overhaul. Seeing the genre as dominated by “khàu-tiāu-á” (哭調仔, “crying songs”) and lacking grooves, she set out to change it by putting her own spin on traditional Taiwanese songs.

“We are a sad people, but we don’t have to be so miserable,” said Lee, a Taiwanese living in Washington, D.C. and a self-taught keyboardist. “Look at the Caribbeans. They’re so playful, but in fact their lives are not better than ours.”

This sense of the sad nature of Taiwanese music, dating back to when she was growing up in Taiwan, inspired her to reinvent traditional Taiwanese Hokkien songs by adding grooves and infusing them with a “partying” vibe, she said.

“From my open jams over the past 20-plus years, I’ve learned that grooves are what people really connect to,” she said.

Her project began simply by playing around on a keyboard. “It all started during COVID. I was locked in and had a lot of spare time. So I started tapping away on my computer, playing songs,” she said.

The casual way she eased into the creative process belied the urgency she felt to pass down traditional Taiwanese songs, especially given the attention musicians from other parts of the globe have gotten.

In her 23 years in the United States, she said, she has often seen musicians from South America and South Korea perform their native music for American audiences, but Taiwan’s government-sponsored concerts in the U.S. have been limited mostly to classical music.

Now, she has enough material for a full-length fusion album titled Formosan Groove (胡聲拍仔), which features seven adaptations of Taiwanese Hokkien songs.

Lee said she chose fusion because she enjoys experimenting with endless possibilities and does not want to be restricted by rigid rules.

“For example, in my first track, Harbor Farewell [港邊惜別], there are 12 different rhythms. That would have been rejected by conventional arrangement theories,” she said.

To bring her ideas to life, Lee teamed up with two friends, Chen Cheng-lun (陳正倫) and Andy Lin (林維洋), both of whom play the erhu. Together, they formed a trio responsible for the seven tracks on Formosan Groove.

She described the album as eclectic, blending jazz, bossa nova, Taiwanese folk songs, electronica, and groove-forward, much like a Taiwanese cabbage stew in which different ingredients combine to create a rich and flavorful dish.

For Lee, incorporating Western music styles created “hooks” that draw Western audiences in, but she stressed that the music had to still retain a Taiwanese identity.

“It had to be the right mix,” she said.

She hoped her work will inspire others. “You don’t have to be professionally trained in music to release an album,” she said.

Lee currently has six shows planned by the end of the year, three for Taiwanese American audiences and three for non-Taiwanese Americans.

Before each song, she plans to play audio recordings of the originals and share the stories behind them, weaving in American cultural references to help audiences connect.

As Lee sees it, introducing one’s culture should not be forced, but a spontaneous process.

“If you want others to know you, you should know them first,” Lee said. One advantage of living in a major American city, she added, is the ease of meeting musicians from around the world and exchanging ideas.

“The Taiwanese government loves to say, ‘Let the world see Taiwan.’ But you don’t see other countries saying, ‘Look at me,’” she said. “When you say that, you’re already shorter than others.”

  • David Tennant to show “completely different side” in The Hack, reveals Adolescence writer

David Tennant to show “completely different side” in The Hack, reveals Adolescence writer

The official synopsis reads: “Set between 2002 and 2012, the drama deftly interweaves two real-life stories, the work of investigative journalist Nick Davies, played by David Tennant, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World, and running parallel, the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle.”

In an interview with Deadline, superstar writer Thorne – who shocked the world earlier this year with Netflix’s Adolescence – gave fans an idea of what to expect from his next project.

“The Hack is a completely different side to David Tennant, an aspect of him that you’ve never seen before,” he began. “It’s [Robert] Carlyle doing something very different, too.

“It’s about the phone hacking scandal, but it’s the phone hacking scandal from the inside of it; it’s two sides of the same coin that then reveal the truth of what was going on during that time.”

The screenwriter isn’t a stranger to factual drama, having also penned Netflix’s Toxic Town, but described The Hack as a particularly challenging assignment that required careful navigation of a “legal minefield”.

Thorne continued: “You see them working out how to fight and it’s really, really difficult. It was a very, very difficult show to write. We were working with the Mr Bates vs The Post Office lot, who are incredible researchers.

“Getting every detail right, and walking the legal minefield of the hacking scandal, was very complicated.”

Annalisa D’Innella (Sex Education) is Thorne’s co-writer on The Hack, while Mr Bates star Toby Jones has a supporting role as then-Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger.

Rose Leslie, Dougray Scott, Eve Myles, Adrian Lester and Katherine Kelly are among the other familiar faces in the seven-part series, which is yet to receive a confirmed premiere date.

  • 81-Year-Old Music Icon ‘Healthy and Happy’ Amid Claims of Elder Abuse

81-Year-Old Music Icon ‘Healthy and Happy’ Amid Claims of Elder Abuse

81-Year-Old Music Icon ‘Healthy and Happy’ Amid Claims of Elder Abuse originally appeared on Parade.

Music legend Gladys Knight has publicly addressed concerns about her health and wellbeing after her son made allegations against her husband, claiming mental and financial abuse.

The 81-year-old “Midnight Train to Georgia” singer is reassuring fans that she remains “healthy and happy” despite the family dispute that has drawn public attention and reported involvement from North Carolina authorities.

Knight, who has been performing for nearly 75 years, continues her busy touring schedule as part of The Queens Tour alongside fellow R&B icons Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills. The tour, which began in May, has 11 additional shows scheduled from September through December.

The controversy stems from statements made by Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, who expressed concern about his mother’s performance schedule in an interview with People.

Hankerson, 49, alleged that the extensive touring was “detrimental” to Knight’s health and claimed it was primarily driven by her husband, William McDowell, rather than the singer’s own desires.

The “Empress of Soul” responded to these concerns through a statement shared with People, offering a different perspective on her current situation and career.

“I’m sorry that my health and performances have been misrepresented. I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right?” she said.

“I’m healthy and happy and visiting friends and family these last few months. I’m excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with The Queens Tour. See you soon.”

However, Hankerson maintains his position that his mother is struggling, describing her as being “on cruise control” in recent performances. He cited specific incidents raising concern about Knight’s memory, including an alleged New Year’s incident where he claims Knight did not recognize him for 45 minutes.

The family dispute has escalated beyond public statements, with Hankerson revealing he filed a formal complaint with the Department of Human Services in Buncombe County, North Carolina earlier this month. According to Hankerson, case workers conducted an assessment at Knight’s home the following day.

“I did my best to give [McDowell] the space to play the role of husband and do what was in my mom’s best interest, and he has not done that. Why is she working? Why is she in this situation where she’s being made to believe that she has to work like this? That’s really my issue with it,” says Hankerson, who alleges that McDowell has been “mental[ly] and financial[ly]” abusive to his mother.

Knight’s representatives have pushed back against these allegations. Her publicist Laura Herlovich issued a statement expressing that Knight and her team are “greatly saddened by Shanga’s unfounded allegations,” particularly given that he allegedly “has had no substantial contact with her.”

The statement also clarified Knight’s recent schedule, noting, “She has not been on tour since June 1 and can’t wait to begin touring again in September.”

“At this time our lawyers have no choice but to explore any and all legal remedies due to Shanga’s defamatory comments.”

Hankerson disputes this characterization, calling the statement “inaccurate” and alleging he has been “purposefully kept in a position of having minimal access” to his mother, maintaining that her “deterioration has occurred over a period of years, and is very evident.”

Hankerson has further challenged Knight’s representatives to provide proof of her condition. “They can say what they want. If her health has been misrepresented then supply evidence of reliable and verifiable, expert medical opinion that will stake their practice and reputation on their claim to the contrary.”
