  • ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Onya Nurve & Jewels Sparkles Interview

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Onya Nurve & Jewels Sparkles Interview

After 17 seasons, you would think a reality series would either lose some of their fanbase or settle into a formulaic structure… and the 10 Emmy nominations this year for RuPaul’s Drag Race tells you that the MTV series is not going to settle into anything. Season 17 winner Onya Nurve and runner-up Jewels Sparkles both started watching Drag Race at different points in their lives, though it served as an entry point into the world of drag for both queens. Their journeys may have started differently, but both queens rose to the challenges and gave it their all in every performance – whether that be the Snatch Game, a Lip Sync for Your Life, or an incredible finale.

DEADLINE: What was your entry point into to RuPaul’s Drag Race

JEWELS SPARKLES: I remember I was in Puerto Rico at the time with my cousin – she’s the cousin that you get down with. She let me play with her dolls and she let me play with her clothes and she was like that cousin for me. I think I was 16 and she was obsessed with Drag Race and she was telling me about it all week. She goes, “finale’s this week, you need to watch it.” And I was like, “girl, I’m not into that. I have no interest in watching that.” And she was like, “no, no, no, no, you need to watch.” She was trying to tell me something telepathically and I was not into it. I was like, “girl, I’m not watching this gay stuff. I’m not into it.” And she was like, “okay, well I’m going to put it on and you’re just going to have to sit there because it’s coming on at eight o’clock.”

I remember she put it on and I felt like this anxiety. She just clocked my shit. That’s me. Everything just made sense. I remember feeling this feeling inside where everything that I was insecure about, everything that I had hated about myself, these people on TV were being celebrated for and they were getting paid for it and they had careers out of it and they were all so beautiful. And I was like, everything just makes sense now. That’s what I’m supposed to do. And yeah, here I am a few years later.

ONYA NURVE: I’m 32 now, I first started watching RuPaul’s Drag Race when I was 27, so really late in life. I just really honestly started watching the show and was obsessed with everything about it. I ended up dating someone at the time who was doing drag, and I went to their first show and that’s how I first started getting into it. And the rest is herstory girl. I just literally started doing it and I didn’t stop. I got into a drag competition and it’s just been a part of my life for the past four years now.

DEADLINE: What are some of the inspirations for your drag? I know you’ve talked about bringing cultural influences into drag, do you have any specific inspirations?

NURVE: Well, definitely my culture. Our cultures are deeply embedded inside of drag and outside of drag, it’s just who we are thoroughly. So, it’s really refreshing to see us both bring our cultures to the table when it comes to our drag. For me, also, theater is a big aspect of my drag. When I perform, I think about performances that I’ve seen on stages and I see myself in a theatrical element. I love to bring the drama and the theatrics and my black culture to my drag for sure.

SPARKLES: I mean, going back to what I was just saying, as a kid, I was always so fascinated with feminine things and girl toys, dolls, dress up stuff… anything that was hyper-feminine, I just gravitated towards. When I’m thinking of drag looks and stuff, my mind always tends to go to things that my younger self would love and appreciate. Anything pink, really hyper-feminine, but also a little bit more of a mature version of that. Also, bringing my Latina culture is really important for me too because when I was watching the show growing up, the Latina queens, the queens who were so unapologetically like, ‘yes, I am Latina, it’s just who I am.’ They were so inspiring to me and I saw my look in them.

DEADLINE: I definitely see the theater influence and your performative aspect as soon you get on that stage, even just on the runway. The first thing that comes to mind is that lip sync battle between the two of you where you punted that wig…

SPARKLES: We were fighting, were fighting for our lives. Our lives. Absolutely. What goes through your head when you’re in that kind of scenario and the other person does something where you’re like, ‘oh shit, she has just revealed a new look.’ Did you know I did that?

NURVE: No, that’s the thing though. I did not know she did that, and you cannot think about those things when you’re lip syncing for your life. You have to first be proud of yourself. Regardless of if I’m in the bottom, I did the best that I can. And since you’re in the bottom, you have to be like, ‘I’m going to fight for my life, do the best that I can and not worry about what the other girl is doing.’ Because if you’re worrying about what the other girl is doing, you’re not worrying about yourself. So, what’s going through my head is, do the best you can and try to get them to pay attention to you. I never have tricks or gags, so punting the wig was the next best thing.

SPARKLES: I didn’t even know you did that until we finished. It was just one of those moments that was so out there. Just surprising.

It’s like a fight for their attention, but it’s one of the scariest feelings when your dream is to be there close to the end and it could all be taken away from you depending on what happens in those three minutes. So, something that made me not freak out so much over it was thinking about the after effect of the lip sync. If this is my last chance to be on TV and I’m going to perform, let me do something that people will want to see in person. Let me really give my last show bit all of Jewels Sparkles. This might be my last time, this might be my last opportunity to show what I can do on TV. And thank God it wasn’t my last chance. I think that mentality makes you want to go further and push harder.

DEADLINE: What were some of the challenges you found the most interesting?

NURVE: I feel like the most fun one, and the one that everyone knows is going to happen, for me at least, is Snatch Game. I feel like that was the most fun day that I’ve ever had on the show.

SPARKLES: I agree, Snatch Game was so fun for me, I was having a ball. I think something really helpful that someone told me right before going on was no one’s going to laugh. No one’s going to laugh in that room, it’s going to be dead silence. So, convince yourself you’re doing a good job, that way you keep the ball rolling because if you start to think I’m not getting any laughs, you’re going to sink fast. So, I was convincing myself I was the funniest one in the room. I was like, I’m the fiercest. I’m the most hilarious bitch. But I had a good time. I mean, it was just so unserious.

NURVE: I feel like Snatch Game for everyone is what we know is going to happen and is what we fear the most. But it honestly is really freaking fun if you can allow yourself to have fun.

DEADLINE: Every year it seems like Snatch Game is the one that queens are either really exicted for or dreading.

SPARKLES: Definitely separates the queens for sure. It’s not just a celebrity impersonation challenge, it really is all about how fast you are, how funny you are, and it’s like a dive into your brain. I feel like that’s how Snatch Game is so much more than an impersonation challenge. I feel like RuPaul sees us as humans and as entertainers through that. He’s like, ‘how fast can you come up with a joke because you have no time.’ He’ll literally ask the question and then he’ll let us have a few seconds to write something down and then he’ll go down the line, pencils down, it’s quick. So, it really is the battle.

DEADLINE: Going into that finale, what was going through your heads before your performances?

SPARKLES: I think we both just wanted to have fun.

NURVE: Yeah, I think that at the point of getting to the finale, you’ve kind of already won in a sense. 14 other girls didn’t make it, so you have to be proud of yourself and use the moment as much as you can to have fun because that’s the last episode that they’re going to see and remember you for. Regardless of what happens, you want to be remembered in a positive light. I feel like for me and for Jewels too, it was just to have fun.

SPARKLES: Not every queen gets the opportunity to have a 15-minute dedication on the show where you get to do your interview, you get to do your performance, you get to do a runway… The episode is very dedicated to equal time for all four of us, and I took that time to push my brand into people’s brains. What I wanted people to remember, Jewels Sparkles, the vision, the identity of this character. I was like, this is it, who I am. This is it.

DEADLINE: Coming off of Drag Race, what has the experience been after the finale for both of you?

NURVE: It’s been nonstop. Just a lot of traveling, a lot of performing, and it’s nothing like how my life was before this. Every day I’m learning something new about myself, about the world and it’s exciting.

RuPaul's Drag Race - Jewels Sparkles

    Jewels Sparkles

    MTV

SPARKLES: Yeah, it’s super exciting. I mean, I’ve been so blessed from the finale to have been receiving so many opportunities and experiences and getting to travel the world and meet queens from everywhere and see people who have been affected by my story and my journey on the show. It’s just the coolest thing ever. We have this year to be like rock stars – we get to travel the world, see every city, and even countries being able to perform. It’s just so surreal. If you would’ve told me five years ago as a baby queen, just doing a talent night, that bitch one day you’re going to be headlining a South American tour, you’re going to headline a tour in Australia, you’re going to headline a tour in… Oh my God, I would believe you, but I would be like, ‘okay, this is fierce.’ It’s just crazy.

DEADLINE: It sounds like it’s just a roller coaster.

SPARKLES: It is. And it’s fast. I’m learning that taking it in and appreciating the moment comes with being present in the moment and that’s something I’m trying to remind myself to do every time. It can get easy to be like, ‘oh girl, another show? I’m tired girl.’ But then I’m like, you’ve always wanted this. Bitch, get your shit together and go have fun and talk to the community and the queens and enjoy. Look at the audience in the eyes and remember why you’re on stage and why they’re here to support you.

  • James Gunn Says He’s Shooting ‘Superman’ Sequel Soon

James Gunn Says He’s Shooting ‘Superman’ Sequel Soon

James Gunn is giving an update on his “Superman” sequel.

During a recent interview with Collider, Gunn said he has completed the treatment for his “Superman” follow-up and that he and his team are currently scheduling production.

“We’re scheduling it now,” Gunn said. “I’m totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They’re not regular treatments. They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I’m just turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.”

Gunn recently revealed across various interviews during his “Superman” press tour that he is writing a new film featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, although he remained vague whether it was a standalone sequel or an entirely new project.

Other upcoming projects on the DC slate include “Peacemaker” Season 2, “Supergirl,” the “Lanterns” TV series, “Wonder Woman” and “Clayface.” Gunn said during a recent interview with CBS Mornings that all projects under the DC umbrella will have their own unique tone and style, much like the comics they are based on.

“‘Clayface’ is a totally different thing. Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do,” Gunn explained. “There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like ‘Superman.’ The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it. … We don’t want people being bored.”

  • Will There Be a ‘Nobody 3’? Bob Odenkirk Teases the Franchise’s Future

Will There Be a ‘Nobody 3’? Bob Odenkirk Teases the Franchise’s Future

Bob Odenkirk reprises his role as Hutch Mansell, an off-the-books government assassin, in “Nobody 2.”

The new film, now out in theaters, is a follow up to Odenkirk’s 2021 film “Nobody,” which introduced the actor as a middle-class working suburban dad with a lethal past.

In the first film, Hutch’s seemingly domestic life unravels after two intruders break into his home. His decision not to fight back strains his marriage and leaves him questioning whom he has become. When a bus fight puts him up against Russian mobster Yulian Kuznetsov, Hutch enlists help from his father, David (Christopher Lloyd), and brother Harry (RZA) to take down Kuznetsov’s crew. The film ends with Hutch and his family moving into a new home — but their return to normal appears to be short-lived when Hutch receives a phone call that suggests his assassin days aren’t quite over yet.

Now, four years later in “Nobody 2,” Hutch is still trying to keep his two worlds apart. “It’s basically about work-life balance but with an assassin as the worker,” Odenkirk tells TODAY.com in an exclusive interview.

Bob Odenkirk reprises his role as Hutch, a highly-skilled assassin, in “Nobody 2.”Universal Pictures via YouTube

Read on to learn more about “Nobody 2” and what Odenkirk has to say about the possibility of a “Nobody 3” and other sequels.

(Warning: Spoilers from “Nobody 2” below…)

    What Happens in ‘Nobody 2’?

“Nobody 2” opens with Hutch going through the motions of being a contract killer for the government while balancing being an involved dad and devoted husband. Though he feels he’s found a way to manage both, Odenkirk tells TODAY.com Hutch knows that’s far from the truth.

“He thinks he’s got a balance in his life, but he knows he’s wrong … (though) he wishes he did,” Odenkirk says. “He has his actions, his missions that he’s doing, and he enjoys those. And then he’s got his family, which he is kind of ignoring, and he starts to become very aware of the fact that he’s not staying connected with his family because he’s just too preoccupied.”

In an effort to reconnect with his family, Hutch takes his wife, kids and dad on a summer vacation to a run-down theme park in Plummerville, where his dad once took him and his brother to when they were kids. But his promising family plans quickly unravel when Hutch gets into a dust-up with the local sheriff.

“The vacation is filled, as most vacations can be, with annoyances and problems and shortcomings, and then that all builds up inside him, and he explodes,” Odenkirk tells TODAY.com.

Hutch attempts to balance his home life with his wife and kids by his side.

As tensions mount, Hutch’s instincts take over, and the trip turns into something much more dangerous when he discovers that Plummerville is a base for a massive bootlegging operation. What begins as a chance to bond with his family soon becomes another mission.

In the official trailer, Hutch is seen in brutal physical fights, while his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen) urges him to “fix it” — a clear sign he’s right back in the kind of high-stakes conflict he can’t seem to avoid.

Though the comedy action film leans more towards “John Wick” than “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” Odenkirk says the film offers relatable moments.

“Getting the garbage out on garbage day and not making it to your son’s basketball games because you are working and trying to plan a vacation,” Odenkirk explains. “These are all things I think people can relate to.”

    How Does ‘Nobody 2′ End?

“Nobody 2” ends with a blow out fight between Hutch and his crew and the local police force and mobsters who work for Lendina (Sharon Stone) — the ruthless crime boss who runs the bootlegging operation through Plummerville. Hutch becomes Lendina’s target after he meddles in her operation by saving the theme park operator’s son, whom she had kidnapped, and burning down her massive fortune.

Odenkirk calls the “last third of the film … a James Bond film, but with a family involved.” It includes explosions, large-scale action sequences and an ending that circles back to Hutch’s core conflict: protecting his family while accepting who he really is.

In the end, Lendina and her crew are eliminated after a fiery and intense battle that ultimately brings the family together following their harrowing experience.

    Does ‘Nobody 2′ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

“Nobody 2” does not have a post-credits scene, but it does have a scene that plays at the beginning of the end-credits.

While most end-credits and post-credits scenes help to wrap up any loose ends from the film or tease the next chapter in a franchise, the final scene in “Nobody 2” only offers snapshots of what happened during the family’s action-packed vacation in Plummerville. It includes pictures taken by Hutch’s daughter that show various moments from their vacation and epic battle at the amusement park.

Will There Be a ‘Nobody 3′?

In an exclusive interview with TODAY.com, Odenkirk says he would be down to do another “Nobody” sequel, officially reprising his role of Hutch.

“I want a ‘Nobody 3’ and a ‘Nobody 4,’” he says. But, according to Odenkirk, there has yet to be an official conversation to get the ball rolling on it.

“If the audience likes it … they decide, not us,” he explains.

On the date of publication, “Nobody 2” has already scored a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 91% audience score.

Hutch knows just who call for backup.
Hutch knows just who call for backup.Universal Pictures via YouTube

What Does Bob Odenkirk Say About ‘Nobody 3′?

Whether or not a third “Nobody” film gets green-lit, Odenkirk already has a specific direction in mind. Just as “Nobody 2” is set four years after the first film, he sees the next installment reflecting another time jump, four years after “Nobody 2.”

“Now those kids are older, Hutch really needs to reconnect before they split apart,” he says of his on-screen children, Sammy (Paisley Cadorath) and Brady (Gage Munroe). In a potential third film, Odenkirk says his son would now be a 22-year-old adult, which could bring “another level of trying to stay connected and a different set of tensions and challenges.”

Aside from all the action, Odenkirk says the balance of relatable family dynamics is at the heart of the series. “These films are meant to … connect with our audience and connect this character on a common shared sense of family tension, and then let them become part of an action movie.”

He also says there could be space for Becca’s backstory, which he revealed they filmed for “Nobody 2.”

“We know that backstory. In fact, we wrote it into ‘Nobody 2,’ but we didn’t shoot it because we didn’t have room in the story,” Odenkirk tells TODAY.com. “But we do know who Hutch and Becca are. We do know how they met, and we do know that they both know, if they cast their minds back to how they met, they both know that they are with a kick a– spouse, and sometimes they forget that.”

“Nobody 2″ is a Universal Pictures film, which shares TODAY.com’s parent company, NBCUniversal.

  • The Summer’s Freshest Air Jordan Collaboration Is Finally Here

The Summer’s Freshest Air Jordan Collaboration Is Finally Here

The Air Jordan collaboration scene is crowded. For as selective as the Jumpman can be when it comes to partners, the brand has built up one hell of a roster over the last two decades. Jordan collaborators have offered countless takes on some of the most iconic sneaker silhouettes of all time, and when a new one launches it inevitably gets compared to the entirety of what came before it. Sure, that new Jordan 4 collab is nice, but is it as good as the one that dropped last year? How does it stack up to the Undefeated 4s or the OG White Cements? More than any sneaker brand, Jordan’s history is front-facing. It’s the whole appeal of the brand—the legacy and the lore and the capital-M moments. Great collaborators rise to the occasion. They welcome the comparisons and aim to establish themselves as part of the same story.

That’s what Awake NY did last year when they first jammed with Jordan Brand on the Nike Air Ship. The brainchild of former Supreme brand director Angelo Baque, over the past several years the label has become a major player in New York’s streetwear scene, dropping killer seasonal collections and partnering with a murderer’s row of the biggest brands in fashion, including Levi’s, Carhartt, and Moncler. The brand’s snakeskin-tinged Air Ship—the silhouette Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan 1—made instant waves. The partnership clearly tapped into something special, prompting sneakerheads to eagerly await Awake’s first proper Air Jordan release.

Awake NY x Air Jordan 5 ‘Bubblegum Pink’

That wait is over. This week, the Awake NY x Air Jordan 5 drops in two bombastic colorways. The more restrained of the two features a sleek black upper accented with royal blue. On the far less subtle end, there’s an eye-grabbing hot pink version with sharp red detailing. Each shoe features showy branding, with Awake’s ‘A’ logo emblazoned across the outside of the uppers of both pairs, alongside embroidered ‘NY’ and ‘23’ hits on the heels. The shoes also feature a unique hybrid Jordan/Awake logo across the tongues, perhaps a show of faith from Jordan in the potential of the partnership (they don’t let just anyone mess with the Jumpman).

Hrithik Roshan’s ‘War 2’ surpasses Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ at box office

‘War 2’ sets internet abuzz with recent update after release

Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 is off to a stellar start, taking the lead over Rajinikanth’s Coolie at the box office.

The action-thriller has set the internet ablaze with its latest box office update.

According to Pinkvilla, War 2 collected over ₹67 crore on its second day, Friday, August 15, while Coolie earned ₹63.50 crore.

This took Ayan Mukerji’s directorial to ₹126 crore, while Coolie stood at ₹139 crore after two days.

However, both films witnessed a significant dip in collections on Saturday, August 16.

The sequel to the 2019 hit War has so far grossed ₹135.53 crore after opening with ₹52 crore on Day 1.

In comparison, Rajinikanth’s action-thriller enjoyed a steady global start on opening day but trailed behind Roshan’s film in India.

Earlier, Pinkvilla reported, “War 2 is the biggest tentpole film of India in 2025, and everything about it is hugely anticipated. Everyone’s eyes are on Hrithik and NTR’s dance number, and Aditya Chopra is well aware of this. He wants to keep building the hype and hunger for this song till the release, and not give the full song to people to watch it for free.”

War 2, starring the Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai star, Kiara Advani, and Jr NTR, released on Thursday, August 14.

On the same day, Coolie, featuring Rajinikanth, Aamir Khan, Shruti Haasan, also hit the big screens.

For the unversed, both films collectively delivered the Indian film industry its second-biggest box office day on Friday, August 15.

Sussexes turn Archie’s favourite dance videos into Netflix documentary

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrate Uganda charity in upcoming Netflix release

A lockdown dance craze loved by Prince Archie has become centerpiece of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s next Netflix project.

The couple’s production company, Archewell, is behind Masaka Kids: A Rhythm Within, a documentary short that highlights a Uganda charity providing orphaned children with a home, hope, and sense of belonging.

When launching Archewell Productions, Harry and Meghan pledged to ‘spotlight diverse voices and share uplifting stories,’ and this new project reflects that mission.

It is to be noted that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not directly involved in filming, they were fascinated by the Masaka Kids’ viral videos during lockdown, reported GB News.

‘They would watch the videos regularly with Archie at home,’ a spokesman for the couple told The Telegraph.

‘So they were already admirers of the organisation before the film project came to them in 2023.’

The film is expected to debut on Netflix later this year.

This comes after Meghan recently celebrated her 44th birthday on 4th August, Prince Harry is believed to be working on launching a ‘new charity’ alongside Seeiso of Lesotho in an effort to compete with rival organisation Sentebale, following his split from the charity.

The Duke of Sussex stepped down from Senetable after a report accused him of ‘harming’ its reputation.

Kim Kardashian rivals Kanye West’s wife with shocking new look

Kim Kardashian once again grabbed all the attention on Friday when she showed off a dramatic new hair color that had fans rushing to comments.

The beauty mogul, who has always been admired for her deep raven locks, revealed a platinum blonde look with darker roots that gave her a fresh edge.

The 44 year old reality star shared the transformation through a snap that showed her puckering up for the camera, as she posed in crisp white pajamas while her ash blonde hair fell perfectly around her face.

“About that time,” she wrote in the caption, a short statement that instantly caught the eye of her followers and celebrity friends.

Hairstylist Chris Appleton, who has styled Kim for years, reacted by calling the new shade “the best” while adding a white heart emoji. Rapper JT from City Girls also shared her excitement, writing, “Favorite color on you!” along with heart eyes.

Kim has often switched between blonde and brunette over the years, keeping her style fresh and unpredictable. However, she wore a curly blonde bob wig for a SKIMS campaign with Roberto Cavalli not long ago, and fans remembered the frenzy she created at the 2024 Met Gala with her platinum look.

Back in 2022, Kim star also turned heads at the Met Gala when she dressed like Marilyn Monroe and wore the Hollywood icon’s famous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress.

Appleton once explained how carefully the process was done, describing the conditioning and fine section work needed to achieve the perfect shade. The Kardashians star herself admitted in past interviews that going blonde makes her feel sassier and more confident, while brunette gives her a powerful “boss” energy.

Kim Kardashian’s latest move has also sparked conversations about the ongoing comparisons with Kanye West’s wife Bianca Censori, who is often in the headlines for her daring look as well.

Liam Gallagher Banned From Throwing Maracas at Oasis Concerts

Liam Gallagher has announced he will no longer be throwing his tambourine or maracas into the crowd during Oasis concerts, citing safety concerns after multiple fan injuries.

The decision comes amid the Britpop band’s highly anticipated Live ’25 reunion tour, its outing first 16 years. Liam and his brother Noel Gallagher launched the tour with shows in Cardiff, Wales, in July, followed by performances in Manchester and London.

Earlier this week, during a trio of shows at Edinburgh, Scotland’s Murrayfield Stadium, Liam broke the news to fans that the tradition of tossing percussion instruments into the audience had officially been banned.

“I can’t throw my tambourine out tonight or my maracas I’ve been told not to,” the lead singer said, according to The Sun. ““I’m not being tight or anything like that. Do you know what I mean?”

He continued, “I’ve just been told, ‘Don’t do any of that s-t anymore,’ because you don’t know how to behave yourselves. You keep pinching each other on your nipples and ears and f-king s-t like that and kneeing each other in the bollocks.”

The announcement follows a recent incident at London’s Wembley Stadium, where a 42-year-old woman was injured after catching Liam’s maracas. The woman initially caught the instrument but was then tackled by two men who wrestled it away from her, according to The Metro UK. She later shared photos of her injuries with British media outlets.

This is not the first troubling incident during the Live ’25 tour. Earlier this month, a fan died after falling during another Wembley concert.

Oasis will perform the first of two shows at Dublin’s Croke Park on Saturday (Aug. 16) before heading to North America for stops at Toronto’s Rogers Centre on Aug. 24–25, followed by stops in Chicago, New Jersey, Los Angeles and Mexico City.
