  • Piper Perabo on Playing the Villain in Butterfly and Possible Season 2

Piper Perabo on Playing the Villain in Butterfly and Possible Season 2

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers from “Butterfly” Season 1, now streaming on Prime Video.

Piper Perabo can get used to playing villains.

In the new Prime Video action-packed spy series “Butterfly,” Perabo is Juno, the evil head of a private intelligence corporation in South Korea.

“Playing the villain is so much fun,” Perabo tells me. “I think the villains in Hollywood keep that secret to themselves so that they don’t have to give up the great parts. I think it’s so relaxing. The getaway car pulls up to you, there’s no running. You have an endless supply of weapons. It’s very relaxing.”

“Butterfly,” based on the graphic novel series of the same name, follows David (Daniel Dae Kim), Juno’s former partner, who comes out of hiding to save his daughter, Rebecca (Reina Hardesty). David had left Rebecca in Juno’s care nine years earlier when he faked his death after one of his missions went terribly wrong.

Juno not only raised Rebecca, but she trained her to be a blood thirsty assassin.

“I like how clear Juno’s sense of purpose is,” Perabo says. “I always think of her like when you were a kid and you’re on the athletic fields and there’s this parent on the sidelines who’s screaming at their kid and just humiliating them and pushing them. That’s who I think Juno is.”

In “Butterfly’s” 6-episode premiere season, Juno tries to win Rebecca back when David, with his new wife and young daughter in tow, convinces Rebecca to escape to Vietnam for a new life.

Were you sad or relieved that you didn’t have to do any of the action work on the show?

Both. I’m usually the one who’s assassinating people [Perabo starred on USA Network’s “Covert Affairs” as a CIA agent for five seasons], so it’s weird to just point and tell others to kill people, but I thought I’d give it a try. Maybe I’ll come back to the assassinations if I am given a chance.

I was rooting for David because he wants to save his daughter, but why did it take so long to come back for her?

Right? And he even took the time to have another wife and another daughter. I know David thought he was protecting Rebecca, but I think she was better off with me. I think it’s better over at Juno’s house. Why? I have a lot more money. You can work for me and make your own money. It’s very healthy over at Juno’s house compared David’s. It’s not safe. There are a lot of secrets. Juno’s is much more nine-to-five.

In the finale, David’s wife is killed. We assume it was Rebecca because she’s nowhere to be found when David finds his wife bleeding to death. What did you think when you read that last script?

I was shocked, but also I was excited, because I feel like it leaves us in a really yummy place. I think this series has a lot of tentacles that can spread out and move in a lot of different directions. One of the things that was fun about being at Comic-Con with “Butterfly” was that Marvel and DC are amazing and have legacies and a depth of all these myths, but it’s so much fun to be in a new universe. When I read the last episode, I was excited because I thought this leaves a lot of open windows.

Truth be told, we don’t know for sure it was Rebecca who killed David’s wife because we don’t see it happen. But she has run off. Do you think she’s going back to Juno, going after Juno? Can Juno ever trust Rebecca again?

Juno doesn’t trust anybody, even her own son Oliver [Louis Landau], and she figures out a way to kind of live with you anyway. Juno’s not gonna burn the bridge just because you screwed her over. There’s a lot more juice in that orange, so let’s not just throw everything away. Like I said, Juno has this clear sense of purpose. It would be foolish to get rid of Rebecca.

I love the scene where Rebecca is shackled to the table, and Juno starts eating a fast-food burger. I did not expect to see Juno munching on a burger.

Juno doesn’t eat very much. Juno doesn’t like to consume very much. Everything has to be so controlled. And then [showrunner Ken Woodruff] said, “When you finally get Rebecca, you are going to be able to just relax and have a burger.” And I was like, “Oh, really? OK, we’re gonna need a lot of burgers.”

How many burgers did you go through shooting the scene?

    A lot.

Did you have a spit bucket?

    No, I ate them all.

Does Juno ever take off her heels?

I think she probably showers in them.

When you’re on the plane leaving South Korea, I was like, “You can take them off now.”

It’s very out of the armored car and into the private jet. Very cab to curb.

What do you think the body count is in “Butterfly?”

A lot, a lot, a lot. Even in the opening of the first episode of Rebecca in the hotel. I remember the costume fittings for that when Reina, who plays Rebecca, was like, “The strap of the purse needs to be this long if I need to strangle him, but I also have to have my entire [getaway] hotel outfit in the purse.” I was like, “This is my kind of fitting.”

How much have you talked about a second season?

A little bit. In my case, we talked a little bit about Juno’s hopes and dreams. I want to put her in the worst situation possible and watch her dig her way out. I want even more guns.

Before we go, I have to ask: any update on the “Coyote Ugly” sequel?

[Laughs]. There’s no update. A couple of days ago, somebody did call me and told me to stop talking about it. I probably shouldn’t say that either, but it’s all really fun.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Talking about Pakistan’s peaceful era, he said, “I started playing guitar at school, and we used to sing with our friends near the central Baptis Church in Karachi. Pakistan was a very comfortable place to live. Nobody would judge you or raise an eyebrow at what you were doing. That peaceful era ended immediately after Zia took over. Gradually, we began to see a decline. The initial days of Bhutto were good, but toward the end of his tenure, things started to deteriorate, and linguistic conflicts—particularly between Sindhis and Punjabis—began to take over.”

He further said that when he was young everything was at its place. People used to feel freedom in their activities. They were allowed to follow their passions and dreams, it never bothered the other person. Things were all in their proper places.

  • ‘Women Wearing Shoulder Pads’ review: A perfect, unexpected show

‘Women Wearing Shoulder Pads’ review: A perfect, unexpected show

In the annals of things I could not have seen coming, none has been more unexpected than “Women Wearing Shoulder Pads,” a queer Spanish-language stop-motion comedy melodrama, set in the aesthetic world of a 1980s Pedro Almodóvar film. (It arrives Sunday at midnight on Adult Swim, the home of things one doesn’t see coming, and premieres the next day on HBO Max.)

Though it takes place in Ecuador, its central character, Marioneta Negocios (Pepa Pallarés), is Spanish, and it’s easy enough to imagine Almodóvar muse Carmen Maura in the role — though it is also impossible to imagine the story told as well, or at all, in any other way. When I call this series perfect, notwithstanding the happy imperfections of its puppets and sets, it’s not because everything works as its meant to, but because there’s nothing you can measure it against — it occupies its own self-created space. Every element is necessary. Even presenting it in English would be to lose romantic, dramatic, telenovelistic force.

At the center of the story is the cuy, a guinea pig eaten in Andean South America, though in this telling they’re also used in a version of bullfighting. (Some cuys are large enough to ride on.) The primary action is a power struggle between Marioneta, a socialite running a campaign promoting cuy as pets, not food, and Doña Quispe (Laura Torres), who has risen from life as a humble butcher to the anything-but-humble CEO of the country’s most famous restaurant, El Cuchillo (the knife).

Mixed up in their lives are Coquita Buenasuerte (Gabriela Cartol), Marioneta’s seemingly happy-go-lucky assistant; Espada Muleta (Kerygma Flores), a matadora in love with Marioneta; Nina (Nicole Vazquez), Doña Quispe’s vegetarian daughter, serving a pro-cuy group as its Minister of Refreshments and Head of Recruitment for Rebellious Teens — “I have looked upon the caged cuy through the prison of capitalist enterprise, through the hubristic iron bars of a homocentric world view” — who will become a pawn in the older women’s game.

Not everything will be as it seems.

Created by Gonzalo Cordova (a veteran of “Tuca & Bertie” and “Adam Ruins Everything”) and produced by the Mexican animation studio Cinema Fantasma, the series comes packaged as eight 11-minute episodes — that is cartoon length — which neatly constitute a short feature film. On the bill are mystery, suspense, terror, revenge, hot romance (including some puppet sex), masked stalkers, performance art, love notes posted with knives, parodies of television shows and commercials, old secrets coming to light and nuns singing karaoke.

From “Gumby” to “Rudolph” to “Wallace and Gromit” to “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” stop motion is of all forms of animation most magical and in its real-space, three dimensional, handcrafted way the most like life, if not necessarily the most lifelike. (It can look ungainly, which is also part of its charm.) It’s a magnification of childhood playtime, a puppet show in which the puppets have broken loose from the puppeteers. The cleverness of the execution is as or more important than how seamless it is. “Women Wearing Shoulder Pads” does all sorts of neat tricks, some you notice and more you simply accept — and when deemed necessary, or just amusing, it will insert a live-action hand or mouth. It’s an exaggerated world — appropriately to the heavy-breathing material — but emotionally expressive, even moving, and lots of fun.

Royal couple partners with Netflix to boost sales of Meghan’s As Ever | Royal | News

Prince Harry and Meghan are rolling the dice on a trip to Vegas – for a “meet and greet” with fans to promote her As Ever products. Their first joint official visit to Sin City is part of the royal couple’s new commercial deal with Netflix. The streaming giant is helping to market, distribute and sell her sparkling wines, breakfast spreads, flower sprinkles, and cookie and crepe mixes.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be peddling their wares at a new 100,000sqft Netflix House retail location being built inside the trendy BLVD luxury shopping centre on the famous Las Vegas Strip. It is just a few miles from the Wynn Hotel, where Harry’s stag night took place in a VIP suite and photos emerged of a strip billiards game.

Harry, 40, returned to Vegas in May on a much more sober mission, to support the Diana Award at a charity event honouring his late mother. Now he and his wife, whose second series of her cookery show With Love, Meghan will air on Netflix on Tuesday August 26, will return together as part of their new deal.

As the Sunday Express exclusively revealed in June, Netflix experts are helping the royal couple to “turbo-charge” sales of Meghan’s As Ever brand in a bid to turn it into an online powerhouse. This will include the couple making personal appearances at Netflix House venues that will sell merchandise and food based on its most popular programmes, as well as “immersive fan activities” drawn from shows including Wednesday and Squid Game.

A senior Hollywood production source confirmed Harry and Meghan will first visit two Netflix House venues due for completion this
year in Dallas, Texas, and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. “By the time they hit the Vegas outlet, which will open in less than two years, it is anticipated at the highest executive levels that As Ever will be a major revenue source for both them and Netflix,” they said.

It was announced earlier this month the couple’s £74million five-year contract had not been renewed although a “first look” film and TV production deal has been agreed that will give Netflix first refusal on any projects proposed by their Archewell production company.

But our source revealed: “The media and public would be completely misguided to think that this means the money has dried up for Harry and Meghan.

“Ted Sarandos [Netflix co-CEO] is still a major supporter and believes Meghan, through her As Ever brand, can evolve into a serious entrepreneur online, on TV and, now, at physical retail venues.

“Many more Netflix House venues will be popping up across America and other countries over the coming years and the idea is that Harry and Meghan will help promote her products in person from time to time to stimulate sales.”

Neither Netflix nor Archewell responded to requests for comment.

New Balance 204L ‘Pastel Pack’ Release Date U204LMMB U204LMMD

New Balance’s just-launched 204L low-profile sneaker will soon have more styles available, but they likely won’t last long on retail shelves. After a quick sell-through of the latest colorway, Timberwolf, official e-commerce images have arrived of two upcoming looks which are draped in tonal pastel shades.

Unofficially dubbed the “Pastel Pack,” this upcoming duo of New Balance 204Ls consists of Pearl Gray Matter and pink pastel colorways of the model, which debuted in July. Rather than the 1970s track shoe-inspired designs of many of today’s most popular slim-soled shoes, New Balance’s latest take on the trend spans decades, blending a thin bottom with a more technical upper equipped with suede overlays. It’s a look that is part minimal, part maximal, and one that has proven popular — every colorway that has been released thus far has seen a quick sell out.

The New Balance 204L arrived in July in the form of a tan Mushroom/Arid Stone colorway followed by a Timberwolf/Linen style that was released Wednesday. Along with the inline colorways, the 204L has also received the collaboration treatment courtesy of Kith, which applied colorful Camellia, Sunburst and Bluebell shades to the sneaker.

“When designing the 204L, we knew we wanted to offer a versatile, sleek sneaker while producing something new and fresh. It was a true collaborative effort working alongside our product manager, developer and team of designers to bring this model to life. The shoe is designed to stand out from other New Balance models with this convergence of two different eras, set to be released in unique materials and colorways,” Pierome Sar, senior designer of lifestyle at New Balance, said in a July press release.

While the previous 204L styles surfaced alongside release information, the details behind these two pastel pairs aren’t yet confirmed. What we do know is that each pair will retail for $110 and will be released from newbalance.com and select New Balance retailers this fall. The style code for the gray pair is U204LMMB, while the pink is U204LMMD.

  • Cocoon reveals Nighttime line-up to set up biggest ever party at 528 Ibiza

Cocoon reveals Nighttime line-up to set up biggest ever party at 528 Ibiza

We were still reeling from Cocoon Ibiza‘s announcement on Wednesday evening, but we weren’t prepared for an aftershock to rock so quickly…

We can now reveal the full line-up for Wednesday 24 September at 528 Ibiza.

After the outdoors shuts at 23:00, the dancing continues onsite until 05:00. That much we knew already. What we hadn’t accounted for was two spaces to dance across.

In a repeat from last year, Sven Väth again takes control of the seldom-used Teatro for one of his extended sets. In contrast to his Daytime set, expect Papa to give this one a little more oomph.

In addition, the Scenarios collective, comprised of Emanuel Satie, Maga, Sean Doron and Tim Englehardt, host the club room. They will play a mammoth back-to-back between all four members.

Following extensive refurbishment, the club (pictured above) only reopened this summer and had primarily been used for 528 Ibiza’s in-house Tuesday and Saturday sessions. However, as the summer has progressed, it is being utilised unadvertised on almost all dates.

Previously called “the rabbit hole” under the venue’s former guise, until June this year, it had not been used publicly since 2019.

This latest revelation, just days after we announced the DJs joining during Daytime, sets up the biggest party in 528 Ibiza’s five-year history. It’ll quite possibly be the biggest to have ever taken place at the location, formerly known as Benimussa Park and Gala Nights.

Two outdoor stages during the Daytime Party from 16:00 to 23:00 and two arenas of music for the Nighttime Party from 23:00 to close. We can’t recall many, if any, on this scale before.

The full list of DJs looks like this: (A-Z) Dana Ruh, Gerd Janson, Greta Spark, Krystal Klear, Marcel Dettmann, DJ Norma, Richie Hawtin, Scenarios (Emanuel Satie, Maga, Sean Doron & Tim Englehardt) and our talisman Sven Väth, who plays both day and night.

To coincide with this news, Cocoon has also issued a Nighttime Party only ticket for all you nocturnal creatures.

Roll on 24 September. All ticket types are on sale below, where you can also find the full line-up breakdown.

  • Farhan Akhtar on Naseeruddin Shah’s criticism of his acting: ‘Why should I reach out to a person who doesn’t respect me’ | Bollywood

Farhan Akhtar on Naseeruddin Shah’s criticism of his acting: ‘Why should I reach out to a person who doesn’t respect me’ | Bollywood

Farhan Akhtar is responding to the comments made by Naseeruddin Shah about his acting and films. Farhan and Naseeruddin shared screen space in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaraa, where Farhan played the veteran actor’s son. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Farhan has now reacted to how he felt about the critical comments made by Naseeruddin and why he did not feel the need to reach out afterwards.

Farhan Akhtar spoke about Naseeruddin Shah’s comments on his acting.

    What Farhan said

When the host asked about whether he reached out to Naseeruddin regarding his critical comments on his acting, Farhan said no and elaborated why. “I have been doing films for 25 years. There are certain actors, directors, and writers who I have known, and they have debuted maybe 10 years after me. If there is something in their work that I feel, from my observation, that this could be better or that I have this piece of advice to give them… genuinely I would pick up the phone and call them. Or say I would like to meet you and sit down and have a conversation with a person who I care about in a sensitive way because you are going into somebody’s creative process, and giving them constructive feedback from your point of view,” he said.

He could have called me to discuss it, says Farhan

Farhan then went on to add, “But it has to be done with a certain degree of love, and a certain degree of respect for the other person. I felt that it didn’t come from that place. I just felt it was just like a statement just theown out publicly. I felt that then this person doesn’t respect you… so why should I reach out to a person who doesn’t respect me? It was very clear to me that if he really did genuinely feel that… he knows my dad, Shabana, my mom and me… we worked together in ZNMD, so it would have been the easiest thing for him to say that I want to speak to you, why don’t you come over!”

For the unversed, in a 2013 interview with The Times of India, Naseeruddin had said, “Farhan Akhtar’s films I clearly don’t care for. I liked his first film, Dil Chahta Hai. He’s a tremendous person and has so many facets to him. Tomorrow I won’t be surprised if I hear that he cooked a 10 course meal to perfection. He sings, acts, produces films and writes. I think it’s great he’s doing whatever he can. I’m not a great fan of his acting or his films. But I admire him.”

    About Farhan Akhtar

Farhan is the son of screenwriter Javed Akhtar. He started his career in Bollywood as an assistant director with films such as Lamhe in 1991 and Himalay Putra in 1997. Since then, he has directed Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya and Don, and acted in Rock On!, Luck By Chance, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Dil Dhadakne Do. He will be seen next in 120 Bahadur.

  • Taylor Swift’s “Sourdough Era” Might Actually Be A Super Bowl 60 Halftime Clue

Taylor Swift’s “Sourdough Era” Might Actually Be A Super Bowl 60 Halftime Clue

    • Taylor’s “sourdough era” may be an easter egg for her being the Super Bowl 60 Halftime performer.
    • Grind City Media ties all her bread talk to the San Francisco 49ers’ mascot, Sourdough Sam.
    • Another sign points to Taylor’s mention of “47 seconds” and the 47th Eras Tour stop being Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

Taylor Swift’s “sourdough era” might not be about carbs at all. According to Grind City Media’s Jessica Benson, it could actually be a halftime-show-sized Easter egg. Insert *pretends to be shocked GIF* here. Swifties are already known for treating Taylor’s every move like a breadcrumb trail, but this one might be leading straight to Super Bowl 60.

Let’s back up. Just this week, Taylor revealed on New Heights—the podcast hosted by her beau Travis Kelce and his brother Jason—that she thinks about sourdough “60% of the time.” She described how much she’s baking and how deep she’s gone into the bread rabbit hole, leading to a slew of headlines about Taylor officially going full carb. We even wrote about it here at Delish, wondering if she was slowly becoming the patron saint of fermentation.

But Benson thinks otherwise. In a new clip, she breaks down the theory: Super Bowl 60 will be played at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. Their mascot? None other than Sourdough Sam. Suddenly, the sourdough chatter doesn’t feel so random.

It doesn’t stop there. Benson also notes that Taylor thanked fans for screaming “for 47 seconds” at a past show—Levi’s Stadium just so happened to be the 47th stop on the Eras Tour. Add it all up, and sourdough starts looking less like a hobby and more like a clue baked right into the halftime chatter.

Now, am I, a secret 33-year-old Swiftie, saying Taylor Swift is performing at Super Bowl 60? Not officially. But am I now side-eyeing every baguette I see, wondering if it’s a coded message from her? You betcha.

‘Wednesday’ creators set record straight on spinoff reports

‘Wednesday’ showrunners get honest about spinoff reports

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are the showrunners behind Netflix’s hit series Wednesday, as they shared what the weight of the reports about the series’ spinoffs is in the work.

“It’s not a priority at the moment because, as we just said, it’s how we get Wednesday back faster than we did in Season 2. We went right from finishing Season 2, jumping right into developing Season 3. It’s sort of all Wednesday, all the time at the moment,” Alfred said in an interview with Collider.

His co-showrunner, Miles, said, “It’s definitely an all-encompassing show. As we were still doing post on Season 2, we’re doing mixes and color timings and all those sorts of different things you do to finish shows while still being in the writers’ room.”

He continued, “This show has been an amazing gift to us, and we really want to honor the fans and make sure that we deliver the best show that they deserve after a three-year wait.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the creators also teased about featuring Lady Gaga in the second part of season two.

“We can’t tease that much. But I think it’s certainly an impactful role. And you know what? She honestly could not have been lovelier. There were not a lot of other people or entourage,” Alfred shared.

“She showed up, she was game to do anything. The cast loved her, the crew loved her. You see Lady Gaga, and I think we all have our certain expectations,” he noted.

“But I think it’s just how incredibly humble and friendly she was was great. It was really wonderful. She’s a fantastic actress, which we all knew from A Star is Born,” Alfred concluded.

Wednesday’s season two, part 2 will be out on Sept 3.
