Lily James Joins Chris Hemsworth in Submarine Thriller Subversion

Lily James has joined Chris Hemsworth in Subversion, a submarine thriller that Patrick Vollrath is directing for Amazon MGM.

Written by Andrew Ferguson, the story has been described as a “Die Hard on a submarine” style thriller that follows a once-promising naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like organization into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters.

Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with a Coast Guard officer (James) in hot pursuit, the commander must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both inside and outside the submarine.

Production begins in September in Australia.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing with executive producers Stephen Shafer and Greg Cohen for di Bonaventura Pictures.

James will next be seen opposite Riz Ahmed in David Mackenzie’s thriller Relay, which debuted at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival and hits U.S. theaters on Aug. 22. She is also starring in Swiped, inspired by Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, a drama that she also produced through her company Parodos Pictures. That film will premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.

The British actress is currently in production on Harmonia, a psychological drama directed by Guy Nattiv, and recently wrapped Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo for director Takashi Miike and Neon.

James, who earned Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice nominations for portrayal of Pamela Anderson in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy, is repped by UTA and Sloane Weber in the US and Tavistock Wood in the UK.

  • Who Kills Abby (And Everyone Else)?

Who Kills Abby (And Everyone Else)?

Warning: Spoilers ahead for “The Hunting Wives.”

“The Hunting Wives” is the definition of a binge watch. Sultry yet thought-provoking, the series has stayed near the top of the Netflix Top 10 charts since its debut on the streamer on July 21.

Brittany Snow plays Sophie, who arrives in East Texas from Boston along with her husband Graham (Evan Jonigkeit) and their son. She’s a fish out of water, adjusting to new cultural norms and a few traumatic events in her past that cast a long shadow.

The Maple Brook neighborhood clearly has a charged history. Luckily for Sophie, Margo (Malin Akerman) takes her under her wing — a good friend to have, considering Margo is married to a wealthy oil tycoon named Jed (Dermot Mulroney) who is running for governor.

    The Hunting WivesNetflix

But there’s a darkness lurking in this friend group. Local teenage Abby (Madison Wolfe) is found dead, and anyone could be the killer. Signs are pointing to it being Sophie, since Abby was shot with Sophie’s new gun. Yep, that’s right: It only took a few weeks and Sophie was already getting arms to match her new neighbors’.

Sophie can hardly remember the night of Abby’s murder — she and Margo were having a bit of a rager at Margo’s lake house. But she’s sure she’s innocent. Still, she’s not innocent when it comes to letting Margo convince her to start drinking, start driving after a tragic accident, and have affairs with younger men (and each other).

Read on to find out what happens in “The Hunting Wives” and how the ending compares to the book by May Cobb.

Who Kills Abby on ‘The Hunting Wives’?

Do you really want to know? OK: It’s Margo, Sophie’s new lover and the queen bee of the friend group.

Two scenes from the first episode foreshadow Margo’s crime.

First, Abby hooks up with her then-boyfriend, high schooler Brad (George Ferrier), but stops because it conflicts with her faith. In the middle of all this, Margo opens the door and makes eye contact with Brad. Yep, they’re a secret item.

Aside from the age gap, and aside from the fact that Margo is married, there’s another complication. Brad’s mom Jill (Katie Lowes) is married to a prominent pastor and is Margo’s friend.

Second, there’s the question of the tampons.

Sophie meets Margo for the first time in the bathroom of her palatial house. There, Margo lets it slip that she can’t use tampons. But that’s not quite the case. In the finale, when Sophie and Margo have rekindled their romance, Sophie goes to the bathroom and sees tampons. Margo says she can use tampons.

Why would this matter? Well, Pastor Pete (Paul Teal), the town’s youth pastor (more on that dude later), had told Sophie that Abby had gotten an abortion — but he interpreted Brad’s confession wrong. In fact, it was Margo who had the abortion. When’s a time that women can’t use tampons? After abortions.

    The Hunting Wives
The Hunting Wives”: Brittany Snow as SophieNetflix

Margo had gone to her estranged biological dad, a doctor, to perform the procedure. (At the same time as all this, Margo is campaigning for her husband’s anti-abortion stance).

As for why Margo killed Abby? Her motive was simple. After a lifetime of manipulating her way to the top, Margo couldn’t let her status be threatened, and Abby was about to do just that.

Abby figured out that Margo had the abortion and was planning to reveal it — a disaster for Margo, her husband’s campaign and her political career.

Margo kills her. With the help of her father and brother Kyle (Michael Aaron Milligan), they conspire to help Margo cover it up, creating an alibi for her.

Who Else Dies in ‘The Hunting Wives’?

A lot of people! Four, in fact. Here’s who dies in “The Hunting Wives” aside from Abby.

    • Abby’s mom, Starr (Chrissy Metz), is killed by Jill, Brad’s mom. Mess! Starr learns from Pastor Pete that her daughter had an abortion, which she didn’t. She goes to confront Brad’s mom, Jill — convinced that Jill had killed Abby. Seeing Starr with a rifle, Jill shoots her.
    • Jill is then killed by Callie. Margo and Callie (Jaime Ray Newman), the sheriff’s wife, go to Jill’s house to confront her and find Starr’s body. They’re preparing to call the police. Jill pulls a gun out to stop them, then Callie kills her. Jill is framed as Abby’s killer — until Sophie figures out the truth.
    • Kyle is killed by Sophie in the show’s final moments. Sophie confronts Margo about her findings — the tampon, the abortion, etc. Margo confesses to Jed about the abortion, affair with Brad and more. He kicks her out of their home and Margo goes to her brother Kyle’s house. Kyle then goes after Sophie and tries to run her off the road. He gets out of his car to get her to talk. Sophie, instead, runs him over. She disposes of the body. This is her second vehicular homicide. Sophie had killed someone accidentally while drinking and driving in Massachusetts and her husband helped get her out of any legal troubles.
    • Pastor Pete takes his own life. Officer Salazar (Karen Rodriguez) figures out that Pastor Pete had been kidnapping local girls — including, most recently, Abby’s friend Nina (Abigail Rhyne). When he’s cornered, he shoots himself. The police discover Nina and another missing girl in the back of his U-Haul.

How Does the Ending Compare to the Book?

The book’s ending is totally different — but hinted at in the show. In the book, Jill is the actual killer. She murders both Abby and Margo.

Abby is pregnant with Brad’s baby. Meanwhile, Brad was also sleeping with Margo, as in the show. Jill kills them to protect her beloved Brad.

Sophie, in the book, has an affair with Margo and doesn’t get back together with her husband Graham.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry have ‘secret weapon’ after Netflix fail

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are all ready to welcome another version of themselves.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are reportedly set to end their Netflix multi million dollar deal with the streaming giant this year, would be given another chance from the bosses.

Netflix’s boss Ted Sarandos is reportedly still keen to work with the Duke and Duchess.

According to Mail Online, Ted’s support of Meghan can be the pair’s “secret weapon”.

Reporter Alison Bishoff says: “There will be a third series of the Duchess’s lifestyle show With Love, Meghan, if she wants to make one. And I hear she does.”

But this may no longer be the case. “Many believe they will just go on ice – forever – as the Sussex team has not yet come up with a script which appeals enough to Netflix bosses Ted Sarandos and Bela Bajaria to get the green light,” the Mail says.

  • Cristin Milioti Video Interview on ‘The Penguin,’ Her Emmy Chances & More

Cristin Milioti Video Interview on ‘The Penguin,’ Her Emmy Chances & More

Cristin Milioti has a whole lotta of EGOT action going on. She already has been a Lead Actress Tony Award nominee for her lead role in Broadway’s Once — which she played more than 500 times from 2011-2013 — a Grammy winner for that show’s cast album and now recipient of her first Emmy nomination as Lead Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology or Television Movie for her acclaimed villain Sofia Falcone in The Penguin. And also this season she returned as Nanette Cole in the iconic USS Callister episodes of Black Mirror. It’s a role she first played back in 2017, and now again eight years later.

In fact, between The Penguin’s 24 Emmy Nominations and Black Mirror’s 10, she is in no less that two of the five nominees for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, adding up to 34 nominations between them.

Milioti continues to show she knows how to pick ’em as also evidenced by her past career choices including that Broadway run in Once; her first series in 2006, playing Catherine Sacrimoni in another Emmy juggernaut, The Sopranos; guest shots in The Good Wife, 30 Rock, Nurse Jackie, The Mindy Project and Fargo; the key part of Tracy McConnell, the “mother” in the final season of How I Met Your Mother; plus movie roles in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated The Wolf of Wall Street, playing the first wife of Leo DiCaprio’s character; and opposite Andy Samberg in the critically acclaimed Sundance sensation Palm Springs.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe showcases ‘Lymphomaniac’: One-woman show by San Francisco native set to take global stage

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A San Francisco native is about to get global exposure for her one-woman show about surviving cancer at a young age.

“The Fringe is probably the most well-known theater festival in the world. It’s personally a really big deal to me because 11 years ago, when I had cancer and didn’t know it, I was at the Fringe Festival. I was actually experiencing symptoms of having cancer without knowing it,” Timpane said.

Timpane, a Noe Valley native, had stage 3 Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She used humor to help deal with her diagnosis by writing, producing and performing “Lymphomaniac” — a candid and humorous look at life with cancer. Her one-woman show debuted 10 years ago, was revived for a limited run late last year, and now, it’s off to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August, with some added perspective.

“I think now it’s much more universal, because we all deal with mental health issues so consistently now,” Timpane said. “And it’s such a universal thing, that I think anyone can relate to having anxiety or having an eating disorder, having PTSD – which are themes that come up in the show.”

Now in remission, Timpane wants to spread a message of hope.

“I think when you’re going through a hard time, it’s so important to remember that the pendulum swings the other way. It does. It always does. And it sounds corny. It sounds like I’m just reading a line out of a book, but it’s so true,” Timpane said. “So, if you’re going through a hard time, just remind yourself that this is not permanent, and that life changes all the time, and to be ready for those pendulum swings in the opposite direction because they come at different times. And just be ready for the good.”

Timpane says it’s huge to be able to go back to the Fringe and reclaim what took so much of her life for so long 10 years ago.

  • Jason Momoa Shaves for the First Time in Six Years for ‘Dune 3’

Jason Momoa Shaves for the First Time in Six Years for ‘Dune 3’

Jason Momoa is officially back in Duncan Idaho mode. Ahead of filming “Dune: Part Three,” the actor shared a video of himself shaving his beard for the first time in six years to get back into character. Momoa said the last time he shaved was for filming the original “Dune” movie.

“Only for you, Denis,” said Momoa in the video, referring to his “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve. The actor later added: “Goddamnit! I hate it.”

Momoa starred as Duncan Idaho in the first “Dune” movie and already had confirmed he’d be back for the upcoming sequel after sitting out “Dune: Part Two.” Duncan is the sword-master and mentor to Paul Artreides (Timothee Chalamet) in “Dune,” but the character sacrifices himself near the end of the film to allow Paul and his mother, Jessica, to escape from Sardaukar soldiers. In Herbert’s books, Duncan eventually returns in the form of a clone. It’s unclear if Villeneuve is taking a similar direction for “Dune: Part Three,” but Momoa is returning.

Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three” also includes returning cast members like Chalamet, Zendaya and Florence Pugh. Newcomers to the franchise include Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, the teenage son of Momoa and Lisa Bonet, and “Silo” star Ida Brooke. The young actors are set to play Leto II and Ghanima, the twin offspring of Paul and Chani.

“A rude awakening is what he’s in for,” Momoa told Extra earlier this month about his son’s “Dune” casting. “He’s into the workforce for the first time. It’s going to be good. He did it on his own. I don’t want to help him, and he’s done it all on his own, and good for him.”

“You want your children to be better than you, and I really, actually believe he is,” Momoa continued. “I couldn’t do what he’s doing at his age. There’s no way I could sit in a room with Denis Villeneuve and hold my own. I was on ‘Baywatch’ at 19. He’s 16 and holding shit down with Denis Villeneuve.”

“Dune: Part Three” is expected to arrive in theaters in December 2026 from Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment.

Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas appear to confirm relationship with Vermont stroll

Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas aren’t trying to hide their apparent relationship.

The two stars were spotted together holding hands in Vermont over the weekend, as seen in pictures obtained by People Magazine.

The outlet reported that de Armas owns a home in Vermont, and she and Cruise were casually strolling around town, both sporting jeans and t-shirts.

Cruise was first seen with de Armas back in February during a night out in London.

A source told People at the time that they were at a dinner with their agents “discussing potential collaborations down the line,” adding that the actors “appeared to have no romantic connection, just friends.”

They were seen again a few more times over the following weeks, including leaving David Beckham’s 50th birthday party together.

Over the summer, the outlet noted they went on a trip aboard a yacht together, and more recently, took in an Oasis concert at London’s Wembley Stadium.

De Armas did speak out about being seen with Cruise in May, telling “Good Morning America” host Michael Strahan, “We’re definitely working on a lot of things. Not just one but a few projects with Doug Liman and Christopher McQuarrie and, of course, Tom. And I’m so excited.”

That project has been confirmed to be the supernatural ocean thriller “Deeper,” co-starring Cruise and directed by his “Edge of Tomorrow’ director Doug Liman.

A source told People earlier this month, “Tom is crazy hardworking and she’s very excited to work with him. She calls it an opportunity of a lifetime,” adding in part, “Tom is an incredible mentor to Ana. She has nothing but amazing things to say about him.”

Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes.

De Armas was previously linked to Manuel Anido Cuesta, stepson of Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, as well as her “Deep Water” co-star Ben Affleck.

Meghan Markle told to do this to save Netflix deal | Royal | News

Meghan Markle has been urged to save her relationship with the streaming giant Netflix ahead of the release of her second season of ‘With Love, Meghan’. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s five-year Netflix deal is due to expire in September, with reports claiming the streaming platform has no plans to renew the agreement.

The Sussexes have so far produced five projects for Netflix, however, apart from their first bombshell docuseries, Harry & Meghan, the rest of them failed to attract many viewers. Meanwhile, even though Meghan’s individual show was designed to market her brand ‘As Ever’, which Netflix has a stake in, the streaming platform may want to negotiate the deal after the second season.

Nick Ede, a brand and culture expert, told Newsweek: “What a lot of studios do is something called a first look deal, where she gets to come up with her ideas and they get the first look. Which means they have that almost exclusivity and there’s a little bit of a relationship between the two parties. It’s really important for her to get her brand across and with As Ever, it was the perfect way to have the two together but we know that social media can be really great too. She might go and do a YouTube series and YouTube is the most watched thing on the planet. There are other avenues for her but from an optics point of view and a success point of view, I suspect she would want to be in a renewed relationship with Netflix because they have powered her and her husband in massive way over the last five years.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry set for new ‘goldmine’ offer – but could face issue

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be about to renew their Netflix deal despite reports as the pair are said to have a key supporter at the streaming giants

Meghan Markle could be about to renew her Netflix deal

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be about to make even more money next year, according to reports. However, despite their potential goldmine offer, it’s thought it’s not all good news for the Sussexes.

Their deal with Netflix was reportedly set to come to an end after running out this year. It was said to be bagging the former Royals in the region of £75million.

But after less than impressive viewing figures in return for both Meghan’s With Love, Meghan series and Harry’s documentary about polo, it was suggested the streaming giants were ready to go their separate ways. However, this is said to be far from the truth, with Netflix’s boss Ted Sarandos still seemingly keen to work with the pair.

According to Mail Online, Ted’s support of Meghan can be the pair’s “secret weapon”. Reporter Alison Bishoff says: “There will be a third series of the Duchess’s lifestyle show With Love, Meghan, if she wants to make one. And I hear she does.”

She claims the duo’s link-up with the streamer could see them in line with the huge deal that Barack and Michelle Obama currently hold. And it’s said future programmes from the former Suits star could show an inside look into the festive periods of the pair, with any announcement to follow the second series of With Love, Meghan.

However, while their on-screen showings are seemingly set to continue, the publication claims their own large team at Archewell Production could see some in-house belt tightening. There had been talk of projects including a rom–com film based on the book Meet Me At The Lake and a retelling of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations being produced by the company.

But this may no longer be the case. “Many believe they will just go on ice – forever – as the Sussex team has not yet come up with a script which appeals enough to Netflix bosses Ted Sarandos and Bela Bajaria to get the green light,” the Mail says.

    Meghan Markle
With Love, Meghan is set for a second series(Image: Netflix)

With Love, Meghan disappointed with a lowly ranking of 383 in Netflix’s most-watched titles between January and June 2025. The wholesome series pulled in just 5.3million viewers worldwide since it was first broadcast in March.

It showed Meghan cooking, gardening and hosting A-list pals on-screen, but in an embarrassing exchange, repeats of the former actress’s old TV drama, Suits, in which she starred before meeting Harry, placed higher.

And it was reported earlier in the month that the streaming platform has decided not to renew the contract it holds with the Sussexes once it runs out in a few months time.

They are believed to have signed a five-year deal worth around $100million in September 2020.

However, despite the rumours, it remains uncertain as to the pair’s partnership with the company.

  • Bostin Brass Band Reflects on Playing Event

Bostin Brass Band Reflects on Playing Event

To properly send off Ozzy Osbourne, the Black Sabbath frontman who died July 22 at age 76, his family needed the perfect band. It couldn’t be a metal band — too loud for a memorial service. And it couldn’t be a funeral band — too solemn and boring. Fortunately, city officials in Osbourne’s hometown of Birmingham, England, had a solution: Bostin Brass Band, a local, 13-year-old New Orleans-style group that had performed several Ozzy and Sabbath classics at other large events.

“We’d done that,” trumpeter Aaron Diaz tells Billboard. “Proof of concept.”

During Osbourne’s public memorial Wednesday (July 30), Bostin Brass Band marched at the front of thousands of Birmingham well-wishers, as well as the hearse carrying the singer and five SUVs containing Osbourne’s widow, Sharon, and his children Jack and Kelly, among others. The three family members, all in black, congregated at the city’s central Black Sabbath Bridge, taking in the mass of floral tributes, balloons and flags. Bostin Brass had been playing “Crazy Train,” but they stopped as the family mourned, allowing for a brief silence.

“We were just a conduit of this emotion,” Diaz says. “We’re aiding that collective moment.”

Diaz, a longtime Birmingham resident, spoke to Billboard by Zoom and reflected on what it was like to help a city say goodbye to its Prince of Darkness.

What was it like being there, emotionally, with so many people mourning Ozzy?

All of us have played in that location thousands of times. We’ve done parades, we’ve done concerts, we’ve done street gigs. But there’s never been a roped-off crowd. There’s never been that kind of devotional direction of energy. You go by and get snippets of “Come on, guys!,” “Yes, son!” and “Pull for Ozzy!” By the end, on the square during the crowd dispersal, we played “Changes.” Every time I went to the chorus, I covered my eyes. I don’t think I looked anyone in the eye for a good 15 minutes. It was too much.

Where were you in relation to the crowds?

We were sandwiched between the police cordon and motorbikes, and we led the cortege from in front of the hearses. There was Ozzy’s hearse up front and the family in about five black SUVs following us. We processed at the beginning, tailing into the street, playing “Iron Man” all the way down. The crowds were singing along — half singing and half chanting. It’s like being at a metal gig. There’s a term, “oggy, oggy, oggy!” Have you heard that one? It’s a rugby shout. But obviously, it’s Ozzy, so everyone’s “Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy!” When we reached the tribute, we played “Crazy Train” and we stopped and the family came out.

I could sense from watching the live feed from the bridge there were a gazillion people there.

It was folks filling up from about half [past] seven. There were already some people that camped out opposite the bridge. Slowly, over the next three hours, it filled up. All the offices there had their lunch break and everyone was coming down in their lanyards — anyone and everyone from Birmingham. A lot of people [were] traveling from very far afield — in band T-shirts, young children, grandparents, everyone in between.

How did Bostin Brass get this gig?

We work with a company called OPUS — Outdoor Places Unusual Spaces. They’ve got a good relationship with the city council. We started working with them around the Commonwealth Games, which came to Birmingham in 2022. Black Sabbath re-formed to do the closing ceremony. Ozzy was there and his chant of “Birmingham forever!” struck a chord.

Fast-forward to 2023, this animatronic bull became a tourist attraction. By public vote, it was called Ozzy the Bull. There was a big unveiling — Sharon Osbourne was there. We were involved with that, through our involvement in public events. Our baritone player, Alicia Gardener-Trejo, she’s a big metal fan, as well as her mom. They go to festivals together. She was like, “Well, this is the perfect opportunity. I’m going to start arranging this metal concert for brass band that I’ve wanted to do for my mom’s 70th birthday.” We played “Paranoid,” “Iron Man” and “Crazy Train.”

A week ago, the event organizers come around and say Ozzy Osbourne had died: “We’re sending this, we’re going to get this over to the Osbournes, you have to do this, here’s the information.” I thought it would be a Birmingham City Council tepid event, but [the public memorial] is an event the Osbournes have funded. It kind of has been this growing dawning of thought: “This is huge, this is epic.” We are very light on our feet, we can march down the road, we don’t need any amplification, but we can bring that kind of big energy. And we’re an unusual band. We’re not a metal band, even though we’re enthusiasts and devotees of him and his legacy, but we’re really tied to that New Orleans tradition with jazz musicians. So it’s marrying those two things. Maybe it puts us in a category of one.

What else do you hope people take away from this memorial?

Just the pride we have in representing the city. Ozzy’s a proxy for the character of the city. Birmingham’s used to being sat on a lot and not being as affluent or as a desirable and celebrated location. But it’s fought back. I don’t think other places in our country enjoy that grit, that lineage. It felt significant for us to champion that. I don’t think Ozzy’s music is something that started here and left. It’s really stayed here.
