  • First Steps’ Takes Second-Largest Opening Day Of 2025 At Box Office With $57 Million

First Steps’ Takes Second-Largest Opening Day Of 2025 At Box Office With $57 Million

    Topline

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” raked in about $57 million at the domestic box office for its opening day, according to multiple outlets, marking the year’s second-largest opening day so far and a win for Marvel and Disney about a year after they announced a reduction in film and TV show quantity to focus on quality.

    Key Facts

The roughly $57 million “Fantastic Four: First Steps” generated at the domestic box office Friday fell narrowly short of the opening day for “A Minecraft Movie” ($57.11 million) and just topped opening day for DC Comics rival “Superman” ($56.1 million), according to Variety.

The film has netted about $106 million globally after securing $49.2 million overseas, setting itself up for an opening weekend of around $125 million, the same figure achieved by “Superman” earlier this month.

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” is receiving praise from critics and fans alike, boasting an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.6/10 on IMDb.

With a production budget of about $200 million, the movie will need to keep pace with ticket sales to turn a profit, as Marvel’s two other releases from this year, “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts*,” both lost money at the box office despite the latter film’s positive reception.

    Surprising Fact

With its opening weekend alone, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” out-earned the entire domestic run of “Fantastic Four” (2015), an adaptation of the heroes that flopped hard at the domestic box office ($56.1 million) and received poor ratings.

    What To Watch For

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” will need to gross over $333.5 million to overtake the run of “Fantastic Four” (2005), which was released during a turning point for comic book movies that took audiences by storm throughout the 2000s.

    Key Background

“Fantastic Four: First Steps” is the last of three Marvel movies released this year and filmed a few months after Disney CEO Bob Iger said the company would reduce output of Marvel movies and TV shows, making the announcement after a run of shows and films received underwhelming viewership and/or box office numbers. Iger told investors last year Disney was “slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three.” Marvel’s next movie is slated to release almost a full year from now, with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” hitting theaters next summer before “Avengers: Doomsday” in December.

Rare Hulk stretch toy sells for £3,900 at auction

A stretch toy figure of Marvel’s The Hulk, said to be “one of the rarest stretch toys in existence”, has sold for £3,900.

The toy was sold at Excalibur Auctions, in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, on Saturday having been expected to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000.

It is said to be one of only 30 examples of the original Hulk stretch figure from 1979 known to still exist.

“We were excited to offer this rare piece of nostalgia today, which set a UK auction record for a figure of its kind,” said Jonathan Torode, from the auction house.

“We saw competitive bidding on the phones and internet, with it finally winning out to a UK private collector, where we hope it will be as cherished by its new owner as much as it has been by its previous one.”

It was produced by toymaker Denys Fisher and came directly from its original owner.

The Hulk figure was manufactured in Thorp Arch, near Wetherby, West Yorkshire, and was sold in limited quantities only in the UK.

This angry, green-skinned figure was owned by a child whose mother knew someone who worked for Denys Fisher, and purchased one of the first off the production line.

Excalibur said the figure came with its original instructions and had never been offered for sale since it was first bought in 1979.

  • NSW spending $1.5m on literary hub to rival Melbourne’s Wheeler Centre and boost Sydney Writers festival | Festivals

NSW spending $1.5m on literary hub to rival Melbourne’s Wheeler Centre and boost Sydney Writers festival | Festivals

Sydney’s literati is about to get what Melbourne has had for more than decade – a rival to the Wheeler Centre that established the southern city’s Unesco-endorsed reputation as the literary and publishing capital of Australia.

On Sunday, the New South Wales arts minister, John Graham, announced the establishment of a dedicated literature hub, to be based out of the state’s public library, as is Melbourne’s Wheeler Centre.

The new hub, with initial funding of $1.5m from the state government, will mean Sydney Writers festival events will take place all year round – 75 literary events over the next 12 months.

“There’s nothing like a festival in terms of the intensity and the sheer numbers of fantastic things that are on,” the creative director of the Sydney Writers festival, Ann Mossop, told the Guardian.

“But this will be a little taste of the festival almost every week,” Mossop said.

The year-long calendar will draw from Australia’s deep literary talent pool and include appearances by international authors.

“We’ve had a situation in Sydney where … really, there are missed opportunities. We have fantastic books released by Australian authors … we also have amazing people coming to Australia for other events or festivals … but we haven’t been able to take advantage of their visits,” Mossop said.

The full program will be announced on 14 August, with the first events kicking off in September. Stella prize winner Michelle de Kretser, Burial Rites author Hannah Kent, the former Australian Greens leader Bob Brown, and Pulitzer-nominated The Atlantic journalist Sophie Gilbert have been confirmed.

The program will aim to deliver timely, engaging content that captures local and international literary voices, using a global literary exchange network and nurturing emerging Australian talent.

Graham said the hub would provide an inclusive and accessible platform for NSW’s diverse communities, “amplifying underrepresented voices and strengthening the connection between writers and readers”.

The recently refurbished 344-seat auditorium underneath the historic Mitchell Library reading room will be the headquarters for many of the program’s events, although Mossop said she expected free and family events to spread out across other library venues and elsewhere.

“The partnership recognises the role libraries play as the homes for readers and writers, and the great contribution that writers festivals play in taking what is quite a solitary act – reading – and transforming it into community experience,” Graham said in a statement.

“This $1.5m investment into a year-around program will benefit us all, strengthening the cultural heartbeat of our city, creating a home for readers and writers – a place for discussion, ideas, reflection, discovery.”

  • Marcia Hines: ‘The strangest thing I’ve done for love? Believe the lie’ | Music

Marcia Hines: ‘The strangest thing I’ve done for love? Believe the lie’ | Music

You grew up with Donna Summer, as you were best friends with her little sister Linda. Is it true you two used to sneak into Donna’s bedroom?

It’s true, I can’t lie! She was older than us and any teenage girl knows that a teenager that’s older than you is cooler than you. I don’t think we ever read her diary or anything. But we wanted to see what she was wearing and try her clothes on. We’d try to hang them up tidy so she didn’t know we had been in there. But she’d always know. She didn’t like it. But that’s what little sisters do! They annoy, you know? She was just so sophisticated and cool compared to us. Donna has passed, but she did get in touch with me and say how proud she was of my accomplishments and congratulations, which was a really nice thing.

Is it true that you are distantly related to both Grace Jones and Colin Powell?

Absolutely. They’re my cousins. Grace is my second cousin and Colin would have been second or third. Grace was brought up in England and I was brought up in Boston, but I did meet up with her brother, Noel Jones, who has got the biggest black American church in LA. I actually went to church with him and one of the guys from the Rockmelons. He said, “You look like Grace” – well actually, he said, in West Indian terms, he said, “You favour Grace.” I didn’t get to know Colin, but he was so way up in politics, it would have been very difficult to get to him.

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Stay humble, be gracious, be grateful. And do unto others, as you have them do unto you. I was brought up very well – you learn those teachings as a kid, and it’s important to put them into practice when you grow older.

What are you secretly really good at?

Mosaics! It’s always been my hobby. I was taught that if you’re artistic as a performer, you’re usually artistic with your hands as well. You know that fantastic actor in Silence of the Lambs – Anthony Hopkins! He’s an incredible artist. Tony Bennett too. And Joni Mitchell is a fine artist. It’s messy, but I do like it. If someone’s getting married, or if someone’s going moving into a new home, I’ll make something for them. It’s a nice thing to give something of yourself that you’ve had to think about. I love to break dishes.

What is the strangest thing you’ve done for love?

    Believe the lie. [laughs]

What’s been your most memorable interaction with a fan?

There’s so many of them. I adore my fans. If it wasn’t for my fans, I wouldn’t be able to live the dream that I’m living. So many people tell me really moving things – like someone was actually dying and they insisted they played my music as they died. That’s big. I hear some incredible stories, because I do a meet and greet with my audience at the end of my shows. It’s so touching, you know? One lady told me, “That song encouraged me to leave my husband.” I was like, “Well, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I’m so pleased I could help.”

    Do you have a nemesis?

No. Well, hang on, hang on. Not that I know of, right? I hope not. You can’t like everybody and everybody can’t like you, but you can meet in the middle of all that madness. If you’ve got a nemesis, you probably made it.

What’s the oldest thing you own, and why do you still have it?

My Bible, which I wrote in when I was about seven. I used to have a teddy bear that I had when I was a kid, and we put it into a teddy bear exhibition, and someone pinched it. But I still have my Bible.

What’s the most chaotic thing that has ever happened to you while on stage?

I fell! This was back in the 1970s – I did a kick, and my foot went out from under me. So I stood up and did it again to make it look like a dance step.

Also, one of the scariest things that ever happened to me was when I was doing Jesus Christ Superstar. It was almost time to go on stage to sing I Don’t Know How to Love Him. Someone spoke to me about something and it disturbed me greatly so when I walked on stage, I blanked. It is scary when you blank. The conductor, Patrick Flynn, was a genius – he saw that I had lost my way, and I don’t know where he got a piece of paper and a Texta, but he wrote down a prompt and held it up in the orchestra pit for me. It’s not an unusual occurrence to forget lyrics. You do what you can not to. But when it’s happening, a millisecond feels like an hour.

What’s been your biggest fashion crime to date?

Platform shoes. It’s all relative, isn’t it – everything old is new again. I’m seeing all these rehashed hippies wearing clothes that I used to wear. Platforms are back, as are flared trousers and baggy clothes. When I was growing up, midriff was everything –that is back too.

Do you have any pets, what are their names and what are their nicknames?

I have a dog by the name of Dalley. He’s a cavoodle. I also have a cat called Sistah and I have just got a new puppy called Brotha. So I always have a sister and brother in the house!

Which book, album or film do you always return to, and why?

Out on a Limb by Shirley MacLaine. That really was an incredible thing to read and it’s still a very good book. It talks about being a spiritual person, and some of the things that she went through and expressing herself as a spiritual person when people thought she was mad. She’s anything but! I don’t know where we live as performers – we live someplace else. We can live in amongst this, but we live someplace else and especially when you’ve got a gift such as she has. I just really like Shirley.

  • 58 Thoughts I Had While Watching ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

58 Thoughts I Had While Watching ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

I’m going to be perfectly honest: I have never seen the first Happy Gilmore, which you might think would affect my enjoyment of Happy Gilmore 2. But honestly…I’m not sure it did? Naturally, I have Travis Kelce’s Happy Gilmore baseball cap from Coachella at the top of my consciousness, but as it turns out, you don’t actually need to be a jock to appreciate this movie—you just have to appreciate the dulcet tones of Adam Sandler yelling. Done and done!

Below, find every thought I had (literally) while watching Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix:

    1. I love when a movie starts with “My name is [title of movie].”
    2. So I’m gathering this movie is about hockey?
    3. Hey, it’s Julie Bowen!
    4. Whenever I see her, I can’t help thinking of the 30 Rock line, “Instead of losing a push-up contest to Julie Bowen to see who gets to play Kevin James’s mean wife that he’s sick of having sex with…”
    5. Four small boys? God help Happy Gilmore.
    6. Aw, first recorded Adam Sandler scream of the movie!
    7. Watching Sandler age in real time is crazy.
    8. Who the hell is Chubbs?
    9. Julie Bowen DIES?
    10. Aw, it’s Adam Sandler’s actual daughter Sunny, from You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah fame!
    11. Now that was a film.
    12. Damn, I want to be really good at ballet.
    13. And to be a Jeopardy clue, for that matter.
    14. Ideally, one that people actually get right.
    15. “We fight in the basement, not at the table.” LOL.
    16. Classic dead-wife dream sequence.
    17. Jesus, 300 grand for ballet school? I mean, my silly little creative writing degree was no cheaper, but that’s crazy.
    18. Hey, it’s Please Don’t Destroy! Or one member thereof!
    19. And…Margaret Qualley?
    20. And Eric Andre?
    21. Once again, I find myself spellbound by Sandler’s ’fit.
    22. Or is it just his general charisma?
    23. No, I think I genuinely like this Oxford shirt-sweats-baseball cap situation.
    24. Sooooo much golf.
    25. Why was my grandfather obsessed with watching this sport on TV?
    26. Aw, Carl Weathers!
    27. Uh-oh, Shooter McGavin seems to be getting out of prison.
    28. Oh, wait, never mind on that.
    29. Hey, it’s Sandler’s other daughter, Sadie!
    30. BEN STILLER, BABY! We are so back.
    31. Would I do well on Hot Ones?
    32. Probably not.
    33. There are plans for a new golf league afoot, but I don’t care so much about that.
    34. Aw, Happy is 30 days sober!
    35. Sooooo many ugly gold blazers. What is this, a suburban real estate firm?
    36. BAD BUNNY!
    37. Sandler’s beard color and texture are looking really good, I have to say.
    38. If being skilled at sports means you have to drink out of a funnel on the field, then I’m good, luv.
    39. God, I want to explain the rules of golf to Bad Bunny (not that I know them, but still).
    40. Honestly, I just want to have a conversation with Bad Bunny. It can be about golf, or literally anything else.
    41. Oop, Shooter’s back out in the world and scheming.
    42. Honestly, my first move post-prison release would also be to order a tall stack of fluffy pancakes in a fancy hotel room.
    43. Oh, no! The pancakes are courtesy of the evil golf league franchise!
    44. Aw, all these flashbacks to young Sandler are killing me.
    45. Always fun to have a major confrontation at Bob Barker’s grave.
    46. I love how loyal Happy’s constellation of meathead sons is.
    47. No offense, men who love this movie (or at least the original), but I’m bored.
    48. If I had one complaint about adult life, it would be that I’m rarely (if ever) lowered down onto a stage while wearing angel wings.
    49. Self-referential meta ’90s joke! Everybody drink!
    50. Okay, I see how playing golf in the snow might be nice and vibe-y.
    51. Not as nice as sitting around taking pictures in the snow for Instagram, but I digress.
    52. Ooh, someone got a Pepsi product-placement deal!
    53. Why am I weirdly stressed about the outcome of this fictional golf game?
    54. Happy wins!!!
    55. I mean, likely thing to happen in a movie called Happy Gilmore 2, but still.
    56. Aw, and his daughter gets to go to billionaire ballet school in Paris!
    57. Okay, well, that’s over.
    58. Never change, Sandler.

  • Adam Sandler brings in celebs for the sequel

Adam Sandler brings in celebs for the sequel

Happy Gilmore has returned to the golf course, and he’s brought a lot of famous friends with him.

“Happy Gilmore 2,” which began streaming on Netflix on June 25, packs a U.S. Open gallery’s worth of cameos in the sequel to the 1996 classic about a hockey player turned unorthodox golfer.

Professional golfers, Hollywood stars, prominent athletes, old favorites from previous Adam Sandler movies, members of Sandler’s family — the list of credits is longer than one of Happy’s drives off the tee.

Here are all the familiar faces who pop up in the movie and their roles.

    Music Stars

    • Bad Bunny: The Puerto Rican superstar plays Happy’s new caddie.
    • Post Malone: The singer pops up as DJ Omar Gosh.
    • Eminem: The rapper portrays the son of the heckler played by the late Joe Flaherty in the original. Just like his dad, Donald Jr. calls Happy a jackass on the course.

    • Cam’ron: The rapper makes an appearance as himself.
    • Kid Cudi: The rapper plays an FBI agent.

    Professional Golfers

Of course, a golf movie has to feature some golfers, and there’s enough current and former stars to fill a clubhouse. They all appear as themselves, including golf legend Lee Trevino, 85, who famously shook his head at Happy’s antics in the original film.

    • Nelly Korda and Nancy Lopez: The current women’s golf star and the retired women’s golf legend appear as doctors.

    Other Sports Figures

    • Travis Kelce: No, the Kansas City Chiefs star tight end didn’t end up appearing as Happy’s son. He shows up as an angry waiter.

    • Jim Gray: Another veteran sportscaster, Gray appears as himself.
    • Reggie Bush: The Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL running back appears as the character 8 Ball.
    • Verne Lundquist: The legendary sportscaster, 85, is back after appearing as a golf commentator in the original “Happy Gilmore.”
    • Paige Spiranac: The golf social media personality plays a woman working for Dick’s Sporting Goods.
    • Sean Avery and Chris Chelios: The retired NHL stars play a pair of henchmen.
    • Kelsey Plum: The WNBA star from the Los Angeles Sparks plays a golf course worker.
    • Rebecca Quin and Nikki Bella: The WWE wrestlers play characters named Flex and Medusa.
    • John Daly, Keegan Bradley, Fred Couples, Bryson DeChambeau, Nick Faldo, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Charles Howell III, Brooks Koepka, Hunter Mahan, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Lee Trevino, Bubba Watson, Will Zalatoris.
    • Fernando Marrero: The pro wrestler plays a character named Screech.
    • Boban Marjanovic: The former NBA cult favorite and “John Wick” actor, who is 7-foot-4, plays Drago Larson, the son of the character played by the late Richard Kiel as a zealous Happy Gilmore fan in the original film.

    Adam Sandler’s Family Members

    • Jackie Sandler: Adam Sandler’s wife plays a dance instructor named Monica.
    • Sadie Sandler: Adam’s daughter plays Charlotte, an FBI asset disguised as a member of Happy’s “Alkies for Life” group.
