One of the stars of animated sensation KPop Demon Hunters says the movie’s success “feels like a dream”.

The film, about a fictional girl band who live a double life defending humanity from a supernatural threat, has become Netflix’s most-watched animated film ever since its release in June.

Upbeat anthem Golden, one of the standout songs from its soundtrack, leapt three places to take the number one spot in the Official UK Singles Chart from Justin Bieber in this week’s top 40.

Ejae, who co-wrote and performed the track, tells BBC Newsbeat she has been “honoured” by its success.

“It’s like I’m surfing for the first time and a big wave just came through,” she says.

“And I’m trying my best to get through it.”

In the film, Golden is performed in the film by girl band HUNTR/X, consisting of Rumi, Mira and Zoey.

According to the Official Charts Company, it’s the first K-pop single to top the UK chart since PSY’s Gangnam Style in 2012.

Ejae, who provides the singing voice of Rumi, performs some of the soundtrack’s songs and also co-wrote Your Idol, How It’s Done and the Hunter’s Mantra.

She tells Newsbeat ending up on the final recordings was an “organic process”.

“I’ve been singing all the demos while writing the songs,” she says.

“I guess we got used to me singing it. And they were like: ‘Hey, do you want to sing?’

“I was just like: ‘Why not?’”

KPop Demon Hunters spent two weeks as the UK’s most watched movie on Netflix

Ejae says the outpouring of support has been “overwhelming”.

She gained almost 100,000 Instagram followers in a month and says she’s been getting used to the spotlight instead of “working behind the scenes”.

The KPop Demon Hunters crew knew Golden was a “banger” when they wrote it, she says, but had no idea how huge it would become.

But Ejae has an idea as to why the song has captured so many fans.

“I think we’re in a time right now where we need hope and people are wanting that,” she says.

“And this song is very hopeful, it just lifts your voice and it’s a very powerful song.

“I think maybe that’s what people need right now.”

HUNTR/X face off against demon boyband the Saja Boys in the movie – and their single Your Idol climbed to number 10 in this week’s chart.

The Official Charts Company’s editor Carl Smith tells Newsbeat it’s a “sign of how popular K-pop is right now”.

He says both songs are “amazing pop songs with great melodies” and the film allows fans to “visualise their new favourite band”.

The last time an animated film soundtrack reached number one was when single We Don’t Talk About Bruno, from Disney’s Encanto, held the top spot for seven weeks in early 2022.

Carl thinks Golden could have similar staying power.

“It could possibly be the song of the summer,” he says.

“I think its popularity transcends generations.”

American actress SunHee Seo, known professionally as Ji-young Yoo, voices the character Zoey in the film

Katy, who runs K-pop site Hallyu Doing, tells Newsbeat the success of KPop Demon Hunters is exciting for UK fans.

“I’m seeing people who are not K-pop fans that have seen the movie and are now looking into K-pop artists for real that they want to go and see,” she says.

Elsewhere in the charts, Drake and Central Cee scored the week’s highest new entry with their collab Which One landing at number four.

And music from Ozzy Osbourne, whose funeral was held in Birmingham this week, continued to climb the charts after his death.

Black Sabbath’s Paranoid climbed 12 places to the top 20, while Ozzy’s solo track Crazy Train hit number 25 – its highest-ever position in the UK.

Duchess Sophie sends heartfelt message to Kate Middleton in latest outing

Duchess Sophie gave a subtle nod to Princess Kate with her fashion choices while performing a key royal task.

Recently, the Duchess of Edinburgh, as Colonel-in-Chief of The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, visited two of their Battalions at their headquarters in Tidworth, Wiltshire.

Notably, in one of the appearances, Sophie donned a breezy blue colour dress from the Firm’s favourite designer Emilia Wickstead, alongside some other pieces from designers loved by the Princess of Wales.

A fashion expert told Hello! Fashion that Duchess Sophie’s new style showcases that she is in her “soft femininity” era.

Tania Leslau said, “The Duchess of Edinburgh’s style leans into soft femininity.”

“…something her latest look captures perfectly. Emilia Wickstead, a firm favourite in her wardrobe, strikes that sweet spot between tradition and romance,” she added.

“Case in point: a practical shirt dress silhouette blooming with clustered blue roses, ideal for potentially sweaty, yet chic, summer duties. And naturally, blue blood pairs best with blue Prada pumps,” Tania explained.

It appears that Duchess Sophie is following in the footsteps of the future Queen by sending a message of support to her with her day-to-day fashion choices.

  • Is AI killing voice dubbing? Industry insiders are ‘threatened’ by evolving technology

Is AI killing voice dubbing? Industry insiders are ‘threatened’ by evolving technology

Boris Rehlinger may not turn heads on the streets of Paris, but his voice is instantly recognisable to millions of French film-goers.

As the French voice of Ben Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix and even Puss in Boots, Rehlinger is a star behind the scenes, but now he is fighting to keep his craft alive in the age of AI.

“I feel threatened even though my voice hasn’t been replaced by AI yet,” he said.

Rehlinger is part of a French initiative, TouchePasMaVF, to protect human-created dubbing from artificial intelligence.

He said that to ensure audiences barely notice that the actor on screen is speaking a different language than they hear, there was a team of professionals, including actors, translators, production directors, dialogue adaptors and sound engineers, hard at work.

The rise of global streaming platforms such as Netflix, which rely heavily on dubbing to make global hits such as Squid Game and Lupin, has amplified demand.

Consumer research firm GWI says 43 per cent of viewers in Germany, France, Italy and Britain prefer dubbed content over subtitles.

    Netflix New Releases: August 2025

An Oxford-set college rom-com from the guy behind The Inbetweeners; the return of one of Netflix‘s biggest ever shows; Genndy Tartakovsky’s latest adult animated project; Vanessa Kirby’s return to more intimate dramas about the human condition; a documentary that promised to shed new light on the Jussie Smollett hate crime incident; and a murder mystery film featuring several British and Irish acting icons are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in August.

Kicking off August is the rom-com My Oxford Year, which focuses on the tried and trusted formula of a young American girl heading to stuffy old Europe and finding love with some impossibly handsome and terribly charming guy, so it’s almost guaranteed to find a huge audience. In this instance, Sofia Carson plays Anna, an ambitious American student at Oxford University whose life is changed when she meets impossibly handsome and terribly charming local Jamie played by Corey Mylchreest. The film is directed by Iain Morris (yes, the same guy who co-created and co-wrote The Inbetweeners) and is written by Allison Burnett and Melissa Osborne, based on the novel by the same name by Julia Whelan. The cast also includes Dougray Scott, Catherine McCormack, Harry Trevaldwyn, and Hugh Coles. My Oxford Year debuts on Aug. 1.

Netflix’s big launch this month is season two of the monster hit Wednesday, which premieres Part 1 on Aug. 6. Wednesday season one is amongst Netflix’s most watched shows ever, and the streamer has already confirmed a third season and plans for spinoffs. The sophomore outing for the show sees Jenna Ortega’s kooky Wednesday Addams return for another year at the dark, mysterious and very Gothic Nevermore Academy. The creative team that made season one of Wednesday such a huge hit are all back, including creators/showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and of course EP and director Tim Burton who gave the show his unmistakable look and feel. New cast additions include Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley and Billie Piper and returning castmembers include Emma Myers, Fred Arminsen Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luiz Guzman and Isaac Ordonez.

Genndy Tartakovsky is one of the biggest names in animation, and the man behind Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Hotel Transylvania has a new animated feature launching on Netflix on Aug. 13. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Fixed sees Tartakovsky in full adult comedy mode, the logline reads, “[the film is about] Bull, an average, all-around good dog who discovers he’s going to be neutered in the morning! As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends as these are the last 24 hours with his balls!” The stellar voice cast includes Adam DeVine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, and Bobby Moynihan.

The Invisible Woman will be very visible on Netflix in August, with Vanessa Kirby debuting her new film Night Always Comes on Aug. 15. The Oscar-nominated British actress is on a career hot streak at the moment, starring in big budget spectacles like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Napoleon and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning as well as critically acclaimed dramas such as Pieces of a Woman, and her latest, which she also produced, is more in the vain of the latter film that scored Kirby an Academy Award nomination. Directed by Benjamin Caron, Night Always Comes is a gritty crime thriller about a desperate woman (Kirby), who over the course of a night risks everything in order to secure her home and her future. The feature is an adaptation of Willy Vlautin’s 2021 novel and is written by Sarah Conradt. The cast also includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephen James, Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly, and Eli Roth.

On Aug. 22, Netflix launches the sure-to-be-controversial and discourse-breaking The Truth About Jussie Smollett? The documentary film purports to tell “a shocking true story of an allegedly fake story that some now say might just be a true story,” casting new light on the absolutely wild incident that involved Empire actor Jussie Smollett who in January 2019 claimed to have been victim of a viscious hate crime. The doc features interviews with police, lawyers, journalists, investigators and with Smollett. The Truth About Jussie Smollett? comes from RAW, the producers behind the viral docs Don’t F**k with Cats and Tinder Swindler.

Another big movie release for Netflix this month is The Thursday Murder Club, a feature based on the 2020 murder mystery novel by Richard Osman. The film, directed by Chris Columbus, features an all-star cast of British and Irish acting legends including Oscar-winners Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley, as well as Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Richard E. Grant and rising Naomie Akie. The Thursday Murder Club tells the story of four 70-somethings, with unique past lives, who decide to solve a murder in a retirement home. Tapping into some of the ingredients that made films like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and even Netflix’s own recently released Nonnas a hit, The Thursday Murder Club debuts on Aug. 28.

Movies added to Netflix in August include American Pie, American Pie 2, Anaconda, Clueless, Dazed and Confused, The Departed, Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Groundhog Day, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Megamind, Minions, Rush Hour, Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3, Thirteen, Weird Science, Wet Hot American Summer, Wyatt Earp, The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

  • Shah Rukh Khan wins first-ever National Film Award for Best Actor for Jawan – Celebrity

Shah Rukh Khan wins first-ever National Film Award for Best Actor for Jawan – Celebrity

In a milestone moment that feels long overdue, Shah Rukh Khan has been awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor for the first time in his 30-year career.

The National Film Awards, among the oldest and most prestigious accolades in Indian cinema, have recognised excellence in film since 1954. The Best Actor category has been presented annually since 1967.

The 59-year-old megastar shares the honour with Vikrant Massey, who was recognised for his powerful turn in 12th Fail, while Khan was celebrated for his dual role in the 2023 box office juggernaut Jawan.

The two actors were jointly named Best Actor at India’s 71st National Film Awards, where 12th Fail also walked away with the coveted Best Feature Film prize, and Rani Mukerji took home the Best Actress award.

That Khan, one of the most beloved and influential figures in Indian cinema, is receiving his first National Award after three decades in the industry has sparked both celebration and reflection among fans. But as he made clear in a heartfelt video message, the journey is far from over.

Currently recovering from an on-set injury with his right arm in a sling, Khan took to Instagram to share the message with his fans and peers. “I am overwhelmed with gratitude, pride and humility,” he said. “A National Award is not just about achievement. It’s a reminder that what I do matters.”

The actor, who played both a battle-scarred army veteran and his idealistic son in Atlee’s Jawan, described the recognition as fuel rather than a finish line. “It tells me to keep going, keep working hard, keep creating and keep serving cinema,” he added.

In his message, Khan thanked the Indian Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the National Film Awards jury, and the directors who shaped his recent body of work — Rajkumar Hirani (Dunki), Siddharth Anand (Pathaan), and, most of all, Atlee, the director of Jawan. “Atlee sir, this is like you say, mass,” he quipped, referencing the filmmaker’s signature style and the film’s unapologetic embrace of action-packed, socially conscious spectacle.

Khan also expressed deep appreciation for his team, family and fans. “To my management team, thank you for putting up with my eccentricities and impatience. To my wife and kids — thank you for allowing me the space to chase this passion, even when it takes me away from you.”

“And to my audience — thank you for all the cheers and all the tears,” he said, signing off with a promise: “I’ll be back on screen soon.”

Dhadak 2 Twitter Reviews: Netizens laud Triptii Dimri-Siddhant Chaturvedi; say ‘You cried at Saiyaara, now…’

Published on: Aug 02, 2025 12:08 pm IST

After Ahaan Panday-Aneet Padda’s Saiyaara, netizens are now going gaga over Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi-starrer Dhadak 2

With their past performances, actors Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi have proven that they are versatile performers who thrive when given the opportunity. For Triptii, it was in films such as Bulbbul (2020) and Laila Majnu (2018), whereas Siddhant left a lasting impression as MC Sher in Gully Boy (2019). So when it was announced that the two are coming together for the first time in Dhadak 2, a college romance where caste plays the villain, audiences were obviously intrigued. Well, their film arrived in theatres this Friday and has already dethroned Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda’s Saiyaara. At least that’s what early reviews suggest.

Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi in Dhadak 2

After watching a first day show of Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi’s Dhadak 2, a netizen shared, “FACTS: #Dhadak2 will not be a bigger hit than #Saiyaara in terms of Box-office. But Dhadak 2 is a better film than Saiyaara for sure. DHADAK 2 ONE OF THE BEST WRITTEN AND PERFORMED FILM OF THE YEAR,” whereas another Twitter review read, “You cried at Saiyaara? Good. Now watch Dhadak 2 and cry for something real. This is the kind of cinema that actually says something No melodrama. No glam. Just the raw truth of caste, class, and injustice.”

Another impressed fan shared, “#Dhadak2 hits you and how!! I can’t really recall any recent movie which has been this effective in shedding light on a such a sensitive subject and showcase the brutality with such honesty. Amidst the Saiyaara craze, we’ve literally lost a movie that deserves way lot more!!! Plus #TriptiiDimri, in a genre like this where she excels, is the cherry on top. Her outburst scene and the pre climax portion is so well executed ,and its literally a blow to all her haters who’ve been spewing hate for her recent script choices. She’s so good as Vidhi ❤️.”

Ahaan and Aneet-starrer Saiyaara continues to rule the box office. But it looks like the Mohit Suri romance has paved the way for other Bollywood love stories amid the recent surge in action movies, with Dhadak 2 being an example. Are you planning to watch Triptii and Siddhant’s film after reading these rave reviews?

Research lion killed in ‘unethical’ alleged trophy hunt shooting

Blondie was thought to be killed near Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe

A well-known lion studied by University of Oxford academics has allegedly been killed by trophy hunters.

Blondie, who was believed to be five-years-old and the dominant male in his pride, is thought to have been killed on the week commencing 29 June just outside of Hwange National Park, in Zimbabwe.

The lion had been wearing a collar used by a university team to study its movements and support long-term conservation efforts.

Simon Espley, CEO of Africa Geographic, a safari company that sponsored the collar, said he was “dismayed and angered”.

He said in a statement: “That Blondie’s prominent collar did not prevent him from being offered to a hunting client, confirms the stark reality that no lion is safe from trophy hunting guns.”

“He was a breeding male in his prime, making a mockery of the… repeated claims that trophy hunters only target old, non-breeding males.”

Africa Geographic allege that the lion was “lured out” of his usual habitat and shot, in what the company said was a “deeply unethical hunt”.

But, the company added that sources suggested the hunt took place legally, with all required permits in place.

Facebook Three hunters stand behind a large, deceased lion in the dark.Facebook

An image of the hunters alongside the dead lion was posted to Facebook, before being deleted

In a statement to Associated Press, Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe parks agency, defended the hunt and said they often happened at night, meaning the collar on Blondie may not have been visible.

He said he had no information on Blondie being lured out of the park with bait, but said there “is nothing unethical or illegal about that for anyone who knows how lions are hunted – this is how people hunt”.

“Our rangers were present. All paperwork was in order. Collars are for research purposes, but they don’t make the animal immune to hunting,” Mr Farawo said.

He declined to name the hunter.

In a text message to The Times, Mike Blignaut, co-owner of Victoria Falls Safari Services, who allegedly helped organise the hunt, said: “I cannot comment on anything. This is under instruction from ZPGA (the Zimbabwe Professional Guides Association).”

But he added: “I do wanna assure you, though, that the hunt was legal and conducted ethically.”

The BBC has also contacted Mr Blignaut for a comment.

Blondie is said to have led a pride of three females and ten cubs.

Getty Images People hold candles and pamphlets shows an image of Cecil the lion at a vigil in central London on July 30, 2016. Getty Images

Blondie’s death echoes that of Cecil the lion, which led to widespread protests

Responding to the lion’s alleged death, conservation charity Born Free said it was “shocked and saddened that yet another magnificent male lion has been brutally and callously slaughtered by a trophy hunter”.

The charity compared Blondie’s fate to that of Cecil the lion, who was killed in similar circumstances in Zimbabwe in 2015.

An American dentist had paid $50,000 (£32,000) to shoot Cecil – which led many to call for the southern African country to tighten up its trophy hunting laws.

Born Free’s head of policy Dr Mark Jones said “little has been learned since Cecil’s death”.

“This irresponsible activity has no place in the modern world, when wildlife needs all the help it can get just to survive. Trophy hunting must be consigned to history,” he added.

Work completed on football club’s new road in Mousehole

Work to create a new access road for a football club has been completed in time for the start for the new season.

Mousehole AFC will now have direct access to the nearby B3315, after previously having a small single-lane track which had become pothole-ridden.

The club failed to raise the reported six-figure funds needed to build the road for Interiora Trungle Parc and The Prince of Wales saw a newspaper story about the club’s struggles and set up a consortium of businesses to fund the project in full.

Project lead Simon Taylor said after “months of hard work behind the scenes, and a month of incredible effort” seeing the road completed was “a real pinch-me moment”.

Mr Taylor said: “As a club we could not be more pleased, and I know that the local residents will soon see the benefits of this new access and from speaking to many, I know how much this will change their lives for the better.

“Thank you to everyone who has made this happen, and of course, a special mention to HRH Prince Wales for getting this momentous project underway.”

It’s hoped the new road will reduce congestion in the nearby village of Paul and provide easier access for supporters.

Work has finished and the road will be open for the club’s FA Cup fixture against Bridgwater United on Saturday afternoon.
