  • Michael C. Hall on Batista Confrontation

Michael C. Hall on Batista Confrontation

[This story contains major spoilers for the series premiere of Dexter: Resurrection.]

Dexter Morgan died once before, born again as a lumberjack and eventually an upstate New York man about town. What’s one more resurrection between friends?

After getting fatally shot in the heart in the 2022 finale of Dexter: New Blood, Michael C. Hall‘s outlandishly lucky serial killer-killing serial killer once again stalks the land, thanks to the latest entry in the franchise, Dexter: Resurrection.

The series premiere (the first two episodes began streaming on Friday) reveals how Dexter survived a point-blank gunshot wound to the chest, leveled his way by son Harrison (Jack Alcott), thanks to the violence occurring in the midst of radically cold temperatures. Just a few degrees warmer and Dexter would be as dead as all the villains he’s killed in the past. Instead Resurrection finds him alive, if not exactly well, as he suffers through an existential end-of-life crisis littered with ghosts from his past only to come out the other side of it as a man on the run in New York City. (John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer, Jimmy Smits’ Miguel Prado, Erik King’s Sgt. Doakes make cameos; James Remar’s father Harry is also there, along with the graves of departed sister Debra, wife Rita and former colleague Maria LaGuerta.)

Before hitting the road toward the Big Apple, however, Dexter faces down his even bigger past in the form of an old friend shaping up to be a new foe: Angel Batista, the fedora-hatted Miami cop played across the decades by David Zayas. After having returned to the franchise in New Blood, Angel reemerges here with newfound awareness about Dexter, all-but completely clued in on his old colleague’s status as the infamous Bay Harbor Butcher. Angel and Dexter’s wariness of one another comes to a head in the premiere during a scene in the hospital, when Angel lays his cards out on the table, without making a full on declaration of war.

“That scene is one of my favorite scenes I’ve ever gotten to play in the show,” Hall tells The Hollywood Reporter about the long-awaited showdown between Dexter and Angel. “It’s a scene you could only enjoy if you’ve been doing something for as long as we’ve been doing it. We have real memories between us [as actors].

Hall found the scene to be a complicated one for Dexter, who is being confronted by the former Miami Metro Homicide chief he has long respected. “It’s really bittersweet for him to reconnect with someone who was once his friend and colleague, when it was a much simpler relationship,” says Hall. “It’s incredibly rich to face Batista with the knowledge of what Batista now has every reason to suspect, or even knows. It makes for some delicious dynamics. Ultimately, Dexter’s a self-preservationist, but he does have a genuine fondness for Angel, and Angel for him, in spite of everything.”

Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan with David Zayas as Angel Batista in the premiere.

For Zayas, the view of the scene is a bit different: “This is a different Angel, with all the information he has now, particularly Dexter just being alive. It’s a new case he has to deal with outside of his environment, in a new place, in New York, where he has no authority as a police officer. He’s having to deal with the cold coming from Miami. There’s so many little issues for him to navigate, while he’s trying to get some justice for all of what he’s missed over those many years.”

Rather than face that justice, Dexter evades it, hitting the road for New York for one reason and one reason only: Harrison. Dexter finds out his son is still alive and not all that far away, living in Manhattan working at a hotel. What’s more, he’s killing at that hotel, and Dexter hears about it, leading him to charge into action to atone for his biggest sin of all: letting his son down.

“Dexter’s invested in the fact of his humanity in a way that feels more substantial and committed than ever before,” says Hall, adding, “But there’s also a new set of characters Dexter interacts with that feels fantastical in a good way.”

Those new characters are a who’s-who of serial killers, played by Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage, Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, Eric Stonestreet and David Dastmalchian.

“The spectrum between those two things feels even broader and more vibrant. We’re proud of it,” says Hall of the show’s confrontation between Dexter’s humanity and serial killer identity. “The show belongs to us while we’re making it. We’re finished making it, and now it belongs to the fans. I’m excited to give it to them.”

But is he excited to bring justice to Dexter’s doorstep? When the dust settles on Resurrection, it’s hard to imagine how both Dexter and Angel can walk away intact — or even alive, in Batista’s case. If it came down to ensuring Angel’s survival, is Hall open to the idea of finally putting Dexter behind bars?

“It’s certainly within the realm of possibility,” he muses. “If he were to be apprehended, he would probably find himself in a prison population that was pretty ripe for his code. It’s a compelling idea.”

Dexter: Resurrection’s first two episodes are now streaming on Paramount+ for Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers, before an on-air debut Sunday at 8:00 p.m. Remaining episodes drop weekly.

Sperry x Colbo Deconstructs the Authentic Original Boat Shoes

Sperry has teamed up with New York-based brand and retailer Colbo on its latest shoe.

For this tie-up, the duo deconstructed Sperry’s Authentic Original boat shoe and rebuilt it into a soft, flexible silhouette. They style is made of premium materials and produced in muted earth tones for a shoe made for the summer.

More specifically, the silhouette features distressing techniques and carefully pre-washed materials for a timeworn patina. The result is a shoe available in two rich, buttery leather colorways: Distressed Taupe and Weathered Sahara. Plus, leather outsoles are inspired by Sperry’s archival designs of the ‘70s and ‘80s, while a collapsible heel can be styled up or down for any occasion.

And the attention to detail extends itself onto the shoes’ packaging. Each pair is wrapped in thick butcher paper and comes with a jute dust bag inside a co-branded shoe box.

Tal Silberstein, co-founder and designer of Colbo, said in a statement that he has been wearing the same pair of Sperry Authentic Original boat shoes for years.

“Down to the wash, wear, and suppleness, I mimicked the elements of my own boat shoes to create something that felt comfortable right off the bat but elevated enough to wear out,” Silberstein said.

“Reflecting on 90 years of craftsmanship, innovation was always at the root of Sperry’s success,” Jonathan Frankel, president of Sperry, added. “Colbo’s unprecedented approach to men’s and womenswear offers a fresh interpretation of style, making this crossover a true embodiment of what Paul Sperry envisioned for the brand when he founded it in 1935.”

The Sperry x Colbo Authentic Original boat shoes, which retail for $225, are now available exclusively via Colbo (online and in-store). A general release on Sperry.com will follow on July 14. And a second, limited edition collab style will be announced in fall 2025.

This is the latest collaboration for the 90-year-old footwear brand. In June, Sperry released its latest collection with Todd Snyder, which featured new versions of the CVO sneaker and the Authentic Original boat shoe.

Other recent collaborations from Sperry include shoes with Aritzia, J.Crew, Colour Plus Companie and Beams Plus.

  • The Surprising Royal Table Rules The British Royal Family Follows

The Surprising Royal Table Rules The British Royal Family Follows

This week, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte visited the U.K. for the first time in 17 years. The Macrons stayed at Windsor Castle as guests of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and on July 8th, a banquet was held in their honor at St. George’s Hall.

The state banquet included three courses—at least one of which was prepared by chef Raymond Blanc—plus dessert, and so many different beverages that each table setting had to have five glasses. Which made us wonder—why? What exactly does a royal table setting entail? Here’s what we found out:

    The Food

According to the Independent, the table took staff six days to prepare. Typically, the menu for a State Banquet leans heavily on local ingredients, procured on royal properties. For the Macron visit, the banquet included vegetables and herbs from the garden, as well as “Supreme of Rhug Estate Chicken with Norfolk Asparagus and Tarragon Cream, followed by Iced Blackcurrant Parfait on a Blackcurrant-soaked Sponge with Elderflower Jelly for dessert.” The menu, per tradition, was written in French.

    The Setting

Typically, when a State Banquet is held at St. George’s Hall, a 164-foot, horseshoe shaped table is set using the Grand Service, made from silver-gilt when George IV was the Prince of Wales–from 1762–1830. However, for the Macron visit, the royals eschewed the horseshoe shape in favor of one long 50-meter mahogany table with guests sitting on either side. But, the china was still on display.

    The China

In the set are “140 dishes, 288 dinner plates, 118 salts, 12 ice pails, 58 dessert stands and centrepieces and 107 candelabra,” according to the Royal Collection Trust, and the “service is so large and so magnificent that it has never been replaced.” Though a few updates have been made over the years, like the addition of Kings Charles’s cipher to the gold-edged side plates.

    The Glasses

When the table is set, the space between each item is measured, inspected by staff (and, historically, by the Queen), and the napkins are folded in the Dutch bonnet style. As for all those glasses? They’re for wine, red and white, water, a bespoke, event-specific cocktail, and champagne for a toast. Though we’re seeing five glasses, typically, there’s a sixth. Did someone go without port? Perhaps. Times change.

Prince William officially kicks off summer with his favourite tradition

Prince William saddles up for a good cause

Prince William got back on the horse (literally) after a huge controversy nearly derailed his summer.

On Friday, July 11, the Prince of Wales took part in the annual Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Charity Polo Cup at Guards Polo Club, marking one of his favourite summer traditions.

The 43-year-old made a solo appearance as Princess Kate was noticeably absent from the sidelines for a second year in a row. However, his cousin Peter Phillips showed up to cheer him on, joined by his girlfriend Harriet Sperling.

Wearing his signature No. 4 jersey, the future king rode across the Windsor Castle backdrop with determination.

“Proud to be taking part in the Royal Charity Polo Cup today,” read a statement on Instagram. Now in its 14th year, the match continues to raise funds for organisations carrying out vital work across the UK and beyond.”

The high-profile match raises funds for 10 charities supported by the Prince and Princess of Wales, including Child Bereavement UK, the Anna Freud Centre, and East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, and more.

Kensington Palace confirmed that this year’s event pushed total donations past $18 million.

The charity event followed controversy. In June, The Times reported that polo cup sponsor Minerva Mondejar Steiner allegedly tried to sell private access to the royals for $27,000. Upon learning of this, William’s charity foundation swiftly cut ties with Mondejar Steiner.

The Sun later reported that William’s estranged brother, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, also cut ties with Mondejar Steiner.

William’s appearance comes just days after he and Kate reunited publicly for the French state visit, where they welcomed President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte to Windsor Castle.

Kate, who continues to pace her return to public life amid cancer recovery, is expected to attend the Wimbledon finals next.

  • Oasis sweep UK album chart after reunion frenzy

Oasis sweep UK album chart after reunion frenzy

Oasis fans have gone mad for their music again following their reunion, sending the band to number one in the UK album chart.

After the group kicked off their comeback tour last week, their greatest hits compilation Time Flies has gone back to the top spot, followed by 1995 album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? at number two.

Debut album Definitely Maybe, from 1994, is at number four – with only Sabrina Carpenter preventing them from completing a clean sweep of the top three.

News of the chart revival comes as the Britpop heroes prepare for their homecoming with the first of five sold-out nights in Manchester.

Oasis have had eight number one albums in total, and last topped the chart when Definitely Maybe went back to the summit last September after the reunion was announced. Time Flies and Morning Glory also went back into the top five at that time.

Three of their songs have also gone into the top 20 singles chart this week, led by Acquiesce, which was originally only a B-side, at number 17. That’s followed by Don’t Look Back in Anger at 18, and Live Forever at 19.

Noel and Liam Gallagher buried the hatchet to get back on stage for the first time in 16 years in Cardiff a week ago, and received enthusiastic reviews from ticket-holders and critics.

They have now moved on to Manchester’s Heaton Park, where about 80,000 people will watch them every night.

They will also play seven nights at Wembley Stadium in London as well as shows in Edinburgh and Dublin, and a world tour.

The success of the brotherly reconciliation has gone some way to eclipsing bad memories of the scramble for tickets, when some fans found that prices more than doubled while they spent hours in a virtual queue.

  • Inside Kid Cudi and Lola Abecassis Sartore’s Wedding Weekend in the South of France

Inside Kid Cudi and Lola Abecassis Sartore’s Wedding Weekend in the South of France

The bride was determined to work with her dear friend (and bridesman), the designer Alain Paul, who she met during her years working at Louis Vuitton under Abloh. “As soon as I got engaged, I told him I wanted him to design this dress,” Lola says. “I’ve always been Alain’s biggest fan—his vision of womenswear is so powerful, contemporary, and timeless at the same time. Alain came up with this idea of using lace, but we didn’t want to use only one as in a more traditional wedding dress. We thought of mixing them as if we would have gone to flea markets throughout the years and found vintage laces to put together a dress. We had the help of this amazing Italian mill, Pizval, who custom-made six different laces for us. Alain spent hours draping them on me, and this is how we came up with the dress. The dress was hand made in Paris by this incredible atelier, and we used 60 meters total of laces.” For the after-party, Alain created a mini version of a runway bridal look from a previous collection.

For jewelry, Ben Baller created custom wedding bands with the idea of mixing two metals—rose gold and platinum for Scott, and gold and platinum for Lola. The combination of the two metals was intended to represent the union of two people.

On Saturday, the ceremony took place overlooking the ocean in the gardens of the Villa Cap Estel. “It was bliss,” Lola remembers. “A moment out of time where the world stopped, and it was just the two of us. We forgot everything around us. It was just us and our love, and it was the purest moment.” Lola and Scott always knew they wanted their minister, Pastor Rich, to officiate their ceremony. “Scott connected with him over the years and introduced me to him,” Lola explains. “We all got along so well, it just made so much sense to have him with us for the most important moment of our lives.”

After the ceremony, guests moved to cocktail hour by the pool, where Badbadnotgood was playing. “This was a full circle moment as they were playing at Virgil’s first show for Louis Vuitton where we met,” Lola says. Then, everyone gathered on the lawn by the villa for dinner, where candles were positioned all around the tables. Other than that, the couple wanted the decor to be quite minimal, so as to highlight the beauty of the location. “You don’t need to do much when you get to spend time with everyone you love in such a magical place,” Lola says. “The chef at the hotel is a young upcoming chef and killed it,” Lola says. “It’s a challenge to please everyone, especially people coming from different food cultures.”

After dinner, guests headed inside the villa for the after-party, where they had turned the restaurant of the hotel into a speakeasy decorated with red and pink velvets. “It was very cozy,” Lola says. Once everyone was inside, Scott performed two songs from his upcoming album for Lola.

“Everyone [we know who had] already gotten married told us it would go fast,” Lola says. “We didn’t know it would go this quickly [though]. We’re on cloud nine in our little bubble of love. It’s so overwhelming to receive so much love in such a short amount of time. You want this feeling to never end. It was really the most perfect, flawless, peaceful day, and we want to do it all over again. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

  • ‘Superman’ features a pocket universe, a tyrannical billionaire, and a flying dog. Confused? Here’s the ending explained.

‘Superman’ features a pocket universe, a tyrannical billionaire, and a flying dog. Confused? Here’s the ending explained.

    • The director James Gunn’s new “Superman” movie leans hard into its comic book origins.

    • The story sees Superman go up against the villainous billionaire Lex Luthor.

    • It’s a busy plot, so here’s the ending of “Superman” explained.

The new “Superman,” which reboots the DC Universe, throws audiences right into the action as the hero goes head to head with the villainous billionaire, Lex Luthor.

But its director James Gunn introduces so many new ideas (like Krypto the Superdog and an entire pocket universe) that the story could feel confusing for some viewers by the end of the film.

The story follows Clark Kent/Superman (David Corenswet) as he grapples with his place in the world, as Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) hatches a plot to discredit, imprison, and kill the Man of Steel.

At the same time, Luthor also schemes with the ruler of a fictional country called Boravia to overthrow a Middle Eastern nation called Jarhanpur. It’s a busy film, but it shows the broad storylines Superman can fit into.

Here’s the ending of “Superman” explained.

Lex Luthor imprisons Superman in his pocket universe.

Superman (David Corenswet) confronts Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) in his office.Jessica Miglio/Warner Bros. Pictures

Much of the story revolves around Luthor’s plot to discredit Superman by using a stolen recording of his Kryptonian parents telling their son to conquer Earth to restart their destroyed planet, Krypton. Because of this, the US government allows Luthor, a villainous genius billionaire, to imprison Superman in his high-tech facility. It exists within a pocket universe that Luthor created.

After Superman is apprehended by a mysterious masked figure who works for Luthor, called Ultraman, he discovers that Luthor is using the prison to detain anyone who disagrees with his violent pursuit of the hero.

Luthor even blackmails a superpowered person called Rex (Anthony Carrigan), who can make any element from the periodic table, to weaken Superman with Kryptonite.

Superman eventually convinces Rex to use his powers to make a miniature Sun so that he can regain his strength and save Rex’s baby son, Josh, from Luthor’s henchmen. Once he’s back to his usual cheery self, Superman frees himself, Rex, and Josh from the prison and escapes through a portal that the Justice Gang member Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and the journalist Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) have managed to open.

Once he returns to Metropolis, it isn’t long before Superman has to fight Ultraman. While their brawl rages through the city, Luthor chooses to let the portal to the pocket universe start spreading, eventually splitting Metropolis in half.

Superman fights Ultraman, and Mr. Terrific closes the portal to the pocket universe.

A Black man in a white, black and red superhero costume is stood inside a large circular machine. that is glowing. On his right there is a woman with dark hair wearing a dark jacket, white t-shirt, and dark trousers. There is a black material growing inside the machine. Outside is a dark mysterious atmosphere.

Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) are standing in the portal to the pocket universe.Warner Bros. Pictures

Ultraman is unmasked during the fight, and revealed to be a Superman clone that Luthor created by stealing Kent’s DNA from previous fights he’s had around the world. The clone cannot think or speak for itself, and Superman ends up throwing it into a black hole inside the pocket universe.

Superman confronts Luthor at his headquarters, and Mr. Terrific closes the portal to save the city. Meanwhile, Luthor berates Superman and tells him that he wants to destroy him because he envies the attention he gets, despite being an illegal alien from another planet.

Luthor feels that his intelligence should warrant more praise than Superman’s strength. But the hero points out that he’s just trying to be the best person he can be, and that he considers himself human because of his upbringing.

While all that is happening, Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) intervene in the Middle East to stop Boravia from invading Jarhanpur and committing genocide.

Lane uses the information she and the fellow journalist Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) have collected about Luthor arming Boravia to publish an exposé about him. This leads the authorities to arrest him and restore the public’s faith in Superman.

Later, while recovering from the fight, Superman watches footage from his childhood with his adopted parents in Kansas, showing that he considers them his true family.

However, that’s not to say he completely rejects his Kryptonian heritage, because Supergirl (Milly Alcock) arrives at his base in the Arctic to collect Krypto the Superdog. This sets up the next DC Universe movie: “Supergirl.”

“Superman” has two fun, post-credits scenes.

A man with black hair wearing a blue superhero costume and a red cape with a yellow 'S' symbol on it sits with his back to the camera, with a medium-sized white dog sitting next to him on the right. They're sitting on the Moon staring at Earth.

Superman (David Corenswet) and Krypto the Superdog look at the Earth from the Moon.Warner Bros. Pictures

Thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, post-credits scenes have become an expectation in comic book movies, as fans wait to get a glimpse of what’s ahead in the next movie or what kind of crossover the studio is building up to.

“Superman” has two post-credits scenes, but they’re fun instead of building up to another movie. In the first mid-credits scene, Superman sits with Krypto on the moon while they look at Earth.

Then, in the second, Superman meets up with Mr. Terrific in Metropolis as the work begins to rebuild the city.

Superman points out that the building isn’t quite straight after the repair, and Mr. Terrific just walks away. Superman quietly says to himself, “Gosh, I can be such a jerk.”

  • Harriet Sperling and Peter Philips continue their summer of love at the Royal Charity Polo Cup with Prince William

Harriet Sperling and Peter Philips continue their summer of love at the Royal Charity Polo Cup with Prince William

Peter and Harriet first appeared together in public in May 2024, when a source told The Sun that the couple looked ‘smitten’ at Badminton. One of Phillips’ friends revealed to The Telegraph that he had ‘recently’ found a new partner after splitting his partner of three years, Lindsay Wallace earlier that year, and that, while the two were ‘spending time together’, it was too early to comment on the nature of the still burgeoning relationship.

Sperling seems comfortable with royal company, appearing relaxed when Peter introduced her to Queen Camilla. The paediatric specialist was in high spirits as she joined the royals for one of the family’s favourite outings, Badminton. Come Ascot last summer, Peter introduced Harriet to his uncle, King Charles.

One year later, and the lovebirds are still going strong, garnering one of the Firm’s ultimate honours with an invite to Ascot’s royal procession. A sure sign, some might assume, that Harriet Sperling may soon find herself wearing a royal wedding ring. Of course, only time can tell, but what is clear is that she has certainly found her footing among the great and gilded of the British aristocracy.

Peter has had his fair share of public romantic ups and downs. After a 13-year marriage to Autumn Kelly ended in 2021, and a recent three-year relationship with Lindsay Wallace came to a close earlier this year, insiders say Peter is now ‘over the moon’ with Harriet. Love was in the air, then, when the couple joined Prince William in Windsor today.

  • Prada looks at collaboration with Indian footwear artisans after sandal scandal

Prada looks at collaboration with Indian footwear artisans after sandal scandal

By Dhwani Pandya and Elisa Anzolin

MUMBAI/MILAN (Reuters) -Prada is looking to collaborate with “artisanal footwear” makers in India in a partnership, it said on Friday, two weeks after the Italian luxury group triggered a controversyby debuting ethnic sandals resembling 12th-century Indian ones.

After viral photos from a Milan fashion show drew criticism from Indian artisans who make the sandals – named after the historic city of Kolhapur in Maharashtra state – Prada was forced late last month to acknowledge that its new open-toe footwear was inspired by ancient Indian designs.

The furore even saw sales of Indian sandals boom, with sellers and artisans seeing the controversy as a way to promote the heritage craft by tapping into nationalist pride.

Prada said in a statement to Reuters that it held talks remotely on Friday with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, which represents 3,000 Kolhapuri sandal artisans, and discussed potential opportunities for future collaboration.

“The next step will be for Prada’s supply chain team to meet a range of artisanal footwear manufacturers,” the company said.

The Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce said that Lorenzo Bertelli, son of Prada’s owners and head of its corporate social responsibility, joined the talks on Friday.

The chamber of commerce said that during the talks Prada said it aimed to launch a limited-edition “Made in India” Kolhapuri-inspired collection of sandals in partnership with Indian artisans.

India’s luxury market is small but growing, with the rich splurging on designer fashion, top end sports cars and pricey watches.

Prada does not have any retail stores in India, and its products are usually reserved for the super rich who shop overseas.

The sandal scandal left the social media abuzz for days with criticism and sarcastic memes, with Indian politicians, artisans and the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce demanding due credit to Indian heritage.
