Mohamed Salah received the Men’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year award for the third time in his career on Tuesday evening.

Voted the standout performer of the 2024-25 campaign by his peers, the Liverpool forward collected the trophy again at a ceremony in Manchester.

Salah is the first player to be named winner on three occasions, having earned the accolade before in 2017-18 and 2021-22.

He also joined teammates Virgil van Dijk, Milos Kerkez, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

  • Rising stars learn building blocks of life on tour

Rising stars learn building blocks of life on tour

In press conferences and other interviews, players frequently — and lovingly — refer to tennis as their job. Admittedly it’s an extraordinary occupation that offers potentially huge rewards but, as with any profession, it comes with its own set of challenges, obligations and responsibilities.

For one thing, an elite tennis career is played out far from home, with the world watching. On top of that, the players are more than just athletes. They are role models and entrepreneurs, and those who travel with a team are also employers.

To help emerging players navigate what is a unique work environment, the WTA offers a two-day educational course in a focused classroom setting, led by Tour leaders, industry experts and former players.

    WTA

In order to qualify for the workshops, which follow on from one-on-one sessions, players must be new WTA Full Members. This means they’ve achieved a year-end Top 150 singles or Top 50 doubles ranking and have played at least six events at WTA 250 level or above.

In 2025, a total of 18 players, including names such as Alexandra Eala and McCartney Kessler, have participated in sessions at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Omnium Banque Nationale présenté par Rogers in Montréal.

They learned about the resources available to them for financial planning, opportunities for further education with partner universities, how to engage effectively with media, and the ways the WTA promotes individual players in the context of the Tour’s overarching Rally the World brand campaign.

    Alexandra Eala

They also delved deeper into the Tour’s approach to safeguarding – online and in the real world – and other operational matters, such as the factors that must be taken into account when it comes to match scheduling.

“Even if it’s not the main part of our job, I think it’s important to have an idea of how various components of the Tour operate,” said Eala, who served notice as a contender when she defeated Iga Swiatek at Miami earlier this year.

“We all work together to lift up tennis, so that knowledge and understanding on both ends – players and organizers – helps us work together as cooperatively as possible to have the best outcomes.”

Kessler, a college tennis alum who has already won three singles titles since making her WTA debut at the start of 2024, agreed.

“I think sometimes it feels hard to justify the time to go through everything, but in the end it’s really important, especially if you’re going to have a long career,” the 26-year-old said. “It’s better to learn it all upfront, than be playing for eight years and still asking questions!”

With so much cultural emphasis on social media, unsurprisingly one of the most popular sessions in Montréal was with Raw Strategy consultancy’s Lindsay Yaw Rogers, who discussed personal branding and storytelling, and encouraged the players to reflect on how they present themselves off court.

“I thought the branding topic was really interesting,” said Kessler, who went on to capture the Montréal doubles title with Coco Gauff. “It’s something I haven’t really been across before, and I think we were presented with insights and tips that are valuable to learn about and utilize.”

The orientation tutorial line-up also featured two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Vania King, who explained how players can get involved with the philanthropic efforts of the WTA Foundation, and former World No.80 and WTA board member, Julia Boserup.

Boserup, who worked for global management consultancy AT Kearney after graduating with an MBA, explained the workings of the Women’s Tennis Benefits Association (WTBA), which administers the player pension plan.

Valérie Tétreault, a leading Canadian player who is now tournament director at Montréal, spoke about running a WTA 1000 event with both player and fan considerations front of mind.

A key element in this respect is the WTA’s ACES program, an umbrella for activities ranging from autograph sessions to kids’ clinics and meeting sponsors.

“I think it’s empowering for the athletes to understand how vital their role is – how they can make a difference and help drive the success of tournaments by giving some of their time when they are in town,” Tétreault said.

“Beyond that, we’re seeing now more players being involved, understanding they have a voice and the power to influence change — the Tour’s maternity initiatives being a great example.”

Tetreault was also glad to see the players engaged in discussions about the sport’s bigger picture and thinking about the long term.

“As much as you want to be in the present, and focus on your routines, there’s always the next chapter of life,” she said. “The little things you do off the court now, whether it’s education or financial awareness, are going to impact what you do later in life.”

The orientations also provided the players with a chance to get to know their colleagues better. This year, social group dinners were held in both locations and in Montréal, Tennis Canada organized a backstage visit to Cirque du Soleil.

“Our goal is for every player to leave the orientation with practical tools and insights that support their journey on Tour — and for them to know we are always here for them,” said Michaela Oldani, vice president of player relations for the WTA.

“Just as importantly, we want to create opportunities for players to connect and build friendships, because while tennis is an individual sport, they are part of a much bigger WTA community.”

  • Fight By Fight Preview | Road to UFC Season 4 Semifinals

Saeteurn steps in for Tsuraya aiming to add to his five-fight winning streak. The California-based debutant claimed gold in Urijah Faber’s A1 Combat last September and successfully defended the belt in his first appearance of the year, moving to 7-1 in the promotion and 8-1 overall.

    Kaiwen vs Keiichiro Nakamura

After stoppage wins in the opening round of the tournament, Kaiwen and Keiichiro Nakamura clash in what should be an explosive featherweight semifinal matchup.

A finalist on Season 2, Kaiwen returned to the competition earlier this year with a second-round finish of DongHyun Seo, extending his winning streak to three and his record to 15-6 overall with the victory. “The Underdog” is a fan favorite and has a penchant for putting on exciting fights, and anyone tuning in later this week should expect nothing less from him in this one.

The 26-year-old Nakamura scored arguably the most impressive finish in the opening round of the four tournaments back in May, blasting EohJin Park with a knee as he came forward and changed levels. The Japanese prospect, who has earned six straight wins, all by finish, has a bit of a dismissive confidence to his style, fighting with his hands low and trusting he’ll be able to deal with anything coming his way.

With all due respect to the two competitors on the other side of the bracket, this feels like one of those instances where we’re getting a finals-level fight in the semifinal round. Kaiwen wants to get himself back to the finals, while Nakamura looks to continue his impressive run of success, and it should result in fireworks when they clash in this one.

  • Cameroon’s survival instincts kick in as they secure quarter-final berth

Cameroon’s survival instincts kick in as they secure quarter-final berth

LUANDA (Angola) – Cameroon had grappled and grinded to overcome the Democratic Republic of Congo in a 2025 AfroBasket elimination game at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda on Tuesday night. The 77-68 victory sets Cameroon up for a quarter-final battle with Egypt.

A game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds from Yves Missi, Williams Narace’s 18 points and Samir Gbetkom’s 16 points pushed Cameroon to victory.

16-year-old Miverdi Miteo and Jonathan Jordan, the only Congolese to score in double figures, finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Cameroon made it to the playoffs after finishing second in Group B, while DR Congo changed spots, looking like a shadow of the team which had impressively qualified for the tournament with a 5-1 record. The Congolese limped into the playoffs with a 1-2 record from Group A.

TURNING POINT: Missi’s six points, which included a baseline three-pointer and a single free throw, were part of a 13-0 run for Cameroon. In between Missi’s scoring, Tamenang Choh scored points, while Cameroon captain Fabien Ateba sank a three-pointer.

HERO: Without key players Jordan Bayehe and Jeremiah Hill, both nursing injuries, the Cameroon team showed they have bite. Players like Choh, who scored seven points, and Brice Eyaga (2/2 from three-point range) and Ateba made sure Cameroon stayed alive in the tournament.

STATS DON’T LIE: Points in the paint (40) and nine second-chance points led to Cameroon’s success on the cold Tuesday night.

BOTTOM LINE: Cameroon could have thrown in the towel, being down two players. But giving up would not be a true reflection of the Indomitable Lions. Courage and execution were the hallmarks of the Cameroon team.

The DR Congo tried to fight back at the end of Cameroon’s run, Jonathan Jordan’s free throws, Miteo’s five points, and Djack Kabuya’s three-pointer cut Cameroon’s lead to 11 points (60-49). In the fourth, the Congolese stepped up their efforts, but it was too little too late.

WHAT THEY SAID: “We switched off defensively and offensively at certain points in the game. Congratulations to Cameroon, we didn’t expect the kind of pressure that they put on us under.” – DR Congo coach Michel Perrin.

“Tonight we came with different mindset. We gave everything on the court. We played hard regardless of our mistakes. We left it all on the court.” – Cameroon center Yves Missi.

  • Majesticks GC and Iron Heads GC set for Wednesday showdown

Majesticks GC and Iron Heads GC set for Wednesday showdown

How they got here: The Majesticks earned 9.16 points for the season. They accumulated points in the first two tournaments this season, including a season-best T5 in Adelaide, but followed that with three consecutive results at the bottom of the team leaderboard. It was a poor season overall for the Majesticks, who had all three of their tri-captains competing to avoid the drop last week in Indianapolis. However, they do enter Michigan off their second-best performance of the year, a solo sixth.

Ian Poulter made birdie on four of his last five holes to sneak into the Open Zone, which unfortunately knocked his teammate, Henrik Stenson, down into relegation territory. Poulter finished 48th in the LIV Golf standings with Stenson falling to 49th.

Lee Westwood had an up-and-down season with a few flashes of brilliance. Although he finished 46th in the standings, his ceiling was higher than Poulter’s and Stenson’s. Westwood finished T10 in Virginia and had a strong Open Championship performance where he finished T34.

Sam Horsfield finished 39th in the standings with his best finish of the season coming in Adelaide (T7).

Previous Team Championship matches: Majesticks GC defeated Iron Heads GC in 2022, however Kevin Na was the only Iron Heads player who’s currently on the roster in 2025. Na was defeated by Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson won his singles and Ian Poulter and Sam Horsfield won their foursomes match. This will be the first time that Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson will be paired together for foursomes at the Team Championship.

Reason for optimism: There’s no denying that the Majesticks had a poor season, but match play has historically been a strength for Poulter, Stenson and Westwood. Poulter has represented Europe in seven Ryder Cups (2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2021), with an overall record of 15-8-2, including an unbeaten 6-0-1 in singles matches. He was part of five winning European teams, earning the nickname “The Postman” for his ability to deliver under pressure. Westwood has a great deal of match play experience and holds the record for the most matches played for Team Europe (47), surpassing Nick Faldo in 2021. Stenson holed the winning putt for Team Europe in his Ryder Cup debut in 2006 at The K Club. He competed in five Ryder Cups (2006, 2008, 2014, 2016, 2018) and formed a formidable duo with England’s Justin Rose.

  • PFA Awards 2025: Mariona Caldentey and Olivia Smith win PFA player of the year awards

PFA Awards 2025: Mariona Caldentey and Olivia Smith win PFA player of the year awards

The Spain midfielder said “there is nothing better than when your opponents recognise your job” after picking up her first PFA award.

Caldentey told BBC Sport: “As a footballer, you want to win the trophies with the team and then when you are successful, this happens.

“It feels nice but I want to win trophies with the club.”

Arsenal team-mate Alessia Russo, Manchester City pair Mary Fowler and Yui Hasegawa, Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert and Manchester United’s Phallon Tullis-Joyce were also on the shortlist.

Spain international Caldentey was named the WSL player of the year in May, an award that was voted for by supporters.

Arsenal finished second in the WSL, behind champions Chelsea, but beat Barcelona 1-0 in the Champions League final with Caldentey playing the whole match.

Canada forward Smith said it “means the world to her” to become the first foreign player to win the award.

She told BBC Sport: “This genuinely means the world to me, knowing that no other foreigner has won this award.

“Whenever I go home it’s so cool to see the girls that are inspired by me, and being a role model they look up to is massive for me and a huge privilege. I want this to help other girls and boys.”

Smith, 21, became the most expensive signing in women’s football history when she completed a £1m move to the Gunners from Liverpool in July.

Smith made her international debut at 15 and joined Liverpool from Portuguese side Sporting a year ago for a club-record fee of just over £200,000.

She scored nine goals in 20 matches in the WSL before agreeing a move to Arsenal in July.

Also in the running for the PFA young player of the year award were Chelsea trio Aggie Beever-Jones, Maika Hamano and Weikie Kaptein; Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton, who won the accolade in 2024; and Manchester City’s Fowler.

Luka Magic is back: Doncic puts up 28 & 10 in Slovenia’s first win

    The official EuroBasket app

LJUBLJANA (Slovenia) – Any fears that Slovenia fans might have had about a Luka Doncic injury were laid to rest on Tuesday night as the superstar scored 28 points in his team’s 93-81 win over Great Britain – their first in preparation for FIBA EuroBasket 2025.

Doncic hit 21 points in the first half – with 20 of those coming in his first 10 minutes on court as he moved freely and shot the ball exceptionally – including a flawless 10-for-10 start from the foul line.

He ended up finishing 7-of-17 from the field and 12-for-14 from the stripe, whilst adding 10 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and a block.

Who will be the next EuroBasket scoring champion?

His performance at the Stozice Arena certainly alleviated the worries of Slovenian fans, as Doncic came out in the middle of the third quarter against Latvia in Riga on Saturday with a knee injury.

However, Doncic’s injury wasn’t as severe as initially thought, and his showing against the Brits – who fell to 0-4 in their preparation for EuroBasket – proved that.

The fans also saw a complete team performance from Slovenia in the win, as they moved the ball beautifully and attacked the basket at will, ending up with 26 makes from the free throw line.

Despite their overall performances so far in the lead-up to EuroBasket, Slovenia will head to Katowice full of confidence.

They face Serbia in their final tune-up before they face Belgium, France, Iceland, Israel, and hosts Poland in Group D action.
