  • Anisimova says win over Swiatek is the most meaningful of her life

Anisimova says win over Swiatek is the most meaningful of her life

NEW YORK — Amanda Anisimova has won 199 matches over the course of her nine-year career on the Hologic WTA Tour, and she can safely say that this one rises above the rest.

“Today is definitely the most meaningful victory I’ve had in my life,” the 24-year-old said on Wednesday night.

She was, of course, referring to her 6-4, 6-3 upset of World No. 2 Iga Swiatek in a packed and raucous Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach her first-ever US Open semifinal.

The win was meaningful for so many reasons, not the least of which was getting revenge — and peace of mind — after Swiatek drubbed her 6-0, 6-0 in the Wimbledon final earlier this summer.

But it was extra special on this court, at this tournament, in front of these fans.

Ahead of this match, the world No. 9 focused on staying mindful and playing without fear She also worked to stay positive, something she felt was missing in the championship match at Wimbledon.

“I think that was the most important part of today, is really lifting myself up and trying to pump myself up with positive affirmations,” the New Jersey native said after the match. “I think that was something I was really lacking in the Wimbledon final. I wasn’t really showing much, or my attitude and my presence wasn’t really there. So I think that’s also something that I learned that I need to do better of.

“…I feel like I was really supporting myself, which in turn also helped me play better.”

The night before the match, Anisimova actually watched the Wimbledon final to get a better sense of what went wrong in that first meeting. She then followed that up with some highlights of successes (again, positive affirmations). In rewatching it, she noticed that “I was slow as hell.” She certainly wasn’t slow as hell on this day, and dictated play with her power — 23 winners to Swiatek’s 13 — and strong return game (four of nine break points converted).

She admitted she felt some stress out of the gate, after getting broken in the first game — “OK, here we go” —  but promptly broke back and felt the stress melt away as she got into a groove.

And as the match continued, she kept her foot on the gas, never letting up and never giving the six-time Grand Slam champion an inch.

“I think when I started the tournament, I was kind of going into the matches with a little bit of fear and maybe holding back a bit,” she said. “As I’ve been progressing and playing more and more, I told myself you can’t go into the match with any fear, especially if I’m playing against top players.

“It’s just not a negotiable for me, because if I want to win the match, I’m going to have to play really brave and strong tennis. Today I really came out there with not an ounce of fear.”

Anisimova will play Naomi Osaka, who defeated Karolina Muchova on Wednesday evening, on Thursday for a spot in the final. The American has won each of her two meetings against Osaka, though they haven’t played since the 2022 French Open.

Celtic pays out seven figure sum over Boys Club sex abuse claims

The lawsuit relates to historic sexual abuse at Celtic Boys Club

A lawsuit against Celtic from victims of historical sexual abuse has ended with settlements totalling more than £1million.

The combined payout has been shared by 24 former Celtic Boys Club players, with three further cases to be continued individually.

Settlement terms have not been disclosed, but Thompsons Solicitors confirmed it was a “seven figure sum”. The firm said one other case had been withdrawn.

Nine further cases against the Glasgow football club, also brought by alleged survivors of boys club abuse, remain ongoing.

The group claim had been brought by 28 former players.

At the Court of Session in Edinburgh, Ian Mackay KC, representing the players, asked judge Lord Arthurson for it to be brought to an end.

Mr Mackay said Celtic and lawyers for those seeking compensation wanted each pursuer to have a settlement based on their own needs.

He said the effect of the sexual assaults varied.

“Some individuals were the subject of serious sexual assaults have relatively minor psychological consequences,” he said.

“On the other hand, some individuals have been the victims of less serious sexual assaults but have enormous psychological consequences.”

It took over a year to assess the victims in Celtic Boys Club for settlements

Each victim was examined by psychologists and a report was submitted to Celtic for tailored compensation.

The abuse was carried out by convicted paedophiles James Torbett and Frank Cairney at the boys club, which was not officially linked to Celtic Football Club.

In 2022, Lord Arthurson gave permission for a number of former boys club players to sue Celtic FC.

He heard that the two entities were “intimately connected” – a claim denied by Celtic’s legal team at the time.

The survivors brought “group proceedings” against Celtic FC, in a procedure similar to an American “class action” legal case.

    ‘Suffering of many’

Laura Connor, a partner at Thompsons, said: “Our clients have acted with resolute dignity throughout.

“At long last, they have achieved success and can take this compensation as confirmation that Celtic boys club was indeed inextricably linked to Celtic Football Club.”

Celtic said it was “very sorry that these events took place at Celtic Boys Club”.

It said it took the abuse “extremely seriously because of the historic contacts between the two organisations”.

Lord Arthurson said the court acknowledged that the case involved “the suffering of many individuals and the related criminal conduct of others”.

However, he said the proceedings had to focus on “matters of fact and law” to reach a conclusion.

He thanked the lawyers for their work and brought the proceedings to an end.

  • Isack Hadjar reveals emotional first thoughts after scoring maiden F1 podium as he explains ‘most pleasing part’ from Zandvoort

Isack Hadjar reveals emotional first thoughts after scoring maiden F1 podium as he explains ‘most pleasing part’ from Zandvoort

Isack Hadjar has explained how he instantly thought of “all the struggles and all the pain” across his motorsport career to date when he crossed the line to claim his first-ever F1 podium finish at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Hadjar was one of the stars of the weekend around the Zandvoort track, with the Racing Bulls rookie charging his way to fourth on the grid in Qualifying and brilliantly defending that position on race day.

A late retirement for McLaren driver Lando Norris then promoted Hadjar into the top-three positions, sparking huge celebrations from the Frenchman and his team as they reached the podium and began to process their achievement.

Speaking ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, having had a few days to reflect further on what unfolded, Hadjar revealed the emotional first thoughts that went through his mind when he put his hands on the P3 trophy.

“There was no word, I just went through in my mind all the struggles I’ve been facing in my career to get to F1,” he said. “That’s all I thought about really, all the struggles and all the pain. I’m just happy I never [gave] up.”

An example of that came early in the Zandvoort weekend when Hadjar was restricted to just one lap during second practice due to technical problems, leaving him on the back foot for Saturday’s track action.

However, the youngster immediately put that behind him, coming back fighting in Qualifying and doubling down on his impressive pace in the race – something he has since taken plenty of satisfaction from.

“This is the most pleasing part,” he stressed. “Even during the race I knew I was going to finish fourth. I thought, ‘I’m in control with fourth place, we’re doing an outstanding job’.

“So, first it was a win already to finish fourth on pure pace, beating Ferrari and Mercedes, and obviously the podium is a cherry on the cake. But the most important [thing] is what we’ve built, like the turnaround from Friday to Saturday – that’s what I remember.”

The only dramas for Hadjar came when he broke his trophy during the pit lane celebrations and later lost track of it while travelling between the Netherlands and Italy.

“Honestly, I don’t even know where my trophy is, my broken trophy,” he smiled. “The team is taking care of it, I guess. I left it in good hands, both parts.

“I don’t know what’s going on. I’ll get a new one, I know that, but I want my broken one… We don’t care about the new one because it’s not part of the Grand Prix history!”

Playing for more: Dragons inspired by Musa, boosted by travelling fans

Georgia dropped to 2-3 but still have a chance to qualify for the Round of 16 if Spain lose to Greece in the day’s final game.

    Turning Point

Bosnia and Herzegovina never trailed in the game and the lead was 24-20 early in the second quarter when the Dragons used a 9-2 spurt to open a 33-22 advantage. The cushion grew to 15 points at 56-41 when Georgia got back into the game and made it 65-60 late in the third quarter.

Georgia never managed to get all the way back, pulling within 73-71 with under 5 minutes to go. But John Roberson and Aleksandar Lazic both drained big three-pointers and Georgia were back down nine points – 80-71 – to decide the game.

    TCL Player of the Game

Jusuf Nurkic shined once again as Bosnia and Herzegovina’s main leader in collecting 15 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists.

John Roberson hit 4 three-pointers for 15 points and 5 assists, Kenan Kemanjas scored 13 points while Edin Atic compiled 11 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 blocks. Georgia’s three-headed attack of Kamar Baldwin, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Goga Bitadze combined for 53 points and 17 rebounds.

    Stats Don’t Lie

Bosnia and Herzegovina shot 50 percent from the floor and made 14 three-pointers at a 44 percent clip while dishing out 24 assists. Georgia made just 7 three-pointers though their percentage was solid at 35 percent. Georgia had only 4 bench points.

    Bottom Line

Bosnia and Herzegovina are Riga bound – the words Dragons fans have waited desperately to hear for decades. Their opponent in the Round of 16 remains to be seen. Georgia meanwhile will go home despite having beaten the reigning champions Spain in the opening game.

Wheaties Unveils Football MVP Jalen Hurts as the Newest Champion of the Iconic Orange Box

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Wheaties announced today that its newest legendary orange box will feature Philadelphia quarterback and champion Jalen Hurts. From being a hometown hero to Big Game stand-out, Hurts exemplifies what it means to be a Wheaties Champion, uplifting his team and strengthening his community through service, youth mentorship and support for Philadelphia schools.

“Wheaties was a staple in my childhood,” said Hurts. “To go from grabbing a bowl of Wheaties and following the icons on the box to now being featured myself is truly humbling and surreal.”

For more than 100 years, the iconic Wheaties box has featured prominent athletes on the cover, honoring what it means to be a Champion on and off the field — recognizing those who are the best at their sports, have broken barriers and made significant contributions to their communities and the world at large.

“Jalen is the true embodiment of a Wheaties Champion — paying forward the lessons he learned from mentors who guided his journey to uplift the next generation,” said Emilie Knox, Vice President and Business Unit Director for Wheaties. “That spirit of resilience and giving back is exactly why we’re so proud to feature him on the cover of this limited-edition box.”

Hurts’ football career has been defined by resilience, perseverance, and triumph. After standout college seasons, he went on to play professionally in Philadelphia in 2020. Defying early odds as a second-round draft pick, he rose to become the team’s starting quarterback, leading them to the Big Game in 2023 and then again in 2025, where he won his first professional championship and was honored for his outstanding performance. Hurts has had many impressive accomplishments throughout his professional career — from All-Pro quarterback to being named Bert Bell Professional Player of the Year in 2022.

Off the field, Hurts’ commitment to community has been just as powerful. He founded the Jalen Hurts Foundation to provide young people from all walks of life with the resources and support they need to maximize their full potential. Through the foundation, Hurts has donated $200,000 to improve classroom environments for thousands of students, including funding 300 air-conditioning units across Philadelphia schools. He regularly uplifts patients at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and champions opportunities for girls in sports and women in the sports industry – efforts that earned him the title of 2024 Philadelphia Citizen of the Year. At every step, Hurts’ leadership is defined by giving back and creating opportunities for the next generation.

Hurts’ limited-edition Wheaties Box will be available at retailers nationwide in November. Read more about The Jalen Hurts Foundation and head to wheaties.com for more about the new Wheaties Champion.

Shot put stars clash in Beijing ahead of World Championships showdown | PREVIEWS

On Sunday (7) Beijing hosts the final World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting before the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25. As such, the fields are a combination of athletes looking for a final tune-up before the big show, and those who are seeking some form of redemption after missing out on selection.

Sarah Mitton is seeking a bit of both. The two-time world indoor champion will head to Tokyo next week as one of the medal favourites in the shot put. But this weekend she may feel she has a point to prove after missing out on victory at last week’s Diamond League Final.

The Canadian was initially declared the champion, but her winning throw was later ruled to be a foul. Memories of that competition will no doubt be a motivating factor when she takes to the circle on Sunday in a competition that also includes Olympic silver medallist Maddison-Lee Wesche, Swedish record-holder Fanny Roos and China’s Zhang Linru.

There’s a strong Chinese presence in the women’s javelin. World U20 record-holder Yan Ziyi, who earlier this year extended her record to 65.89m, will line up against the two women who’ll be representing China in this discipline in Tokyo later this month: Dai Qianqian and Asian champion Su Lingdan.

One week before he takes to the startline for his first-round heat at the World Championships, USA’s Khaleb McRae will aim to produce a confidence-boosting run in Beijing. McRae, who has improved his PB to 43.91 this year, will take on compatriot Bryce Deadmon.

In the men’s 100m, Tokyo-bound trio Eloy Benitez of Puerto Rico, Andre de Grasse of Canada and Xie Zhenye of China will take on USA’s Brandon Hicklin. Meanwhile, the women’s 100m features Trinidad & Tobago’s national champion Leah Bertrand, USA’s Maia McCoy and Celera Barnes.

The men’s 110m hurdles looks set to be a showdown between US duo Freddie Crittenden and Eric Edwards. The women’s sprint hurdles line-up includes USA’s Rayniah Jones, Hungary’s Anna Toth and Germany’s Ricarda Lobe.

Elsewhere on the track, European silver medallist Louise Maraval takes on Tia-Adana Belle in the women’s 400m hurdles, while two-time Commonwealth champion Wycliffe Kinyamal faces Irish record-holder Mark English in the men’s 800m.

World silver medallist Ernest John Obiena leads a pole vault field that also includes Huang Bokai and Li Chenyang, the two men who have set Chinese records this year.

Will Williams, who’ll represent the USA in Tokyo later this month, takes on compatriot Cameron Crump in the men’s long jump.

US rhythmic gymnast Rin Keys relives shock of historic world medal in ball final

The moment when US rhythmic gymnast Rin Keys made history, the 16-year-old wasn’t watching.

First to compete in the ball final at the recent Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Keys had gotten her marks, a 29.050, and gone into the back of the competition halls.

She still had one more final that day – ribbon – and needed to relax, refuel and refocus.

“I just rested a little bit, got my mind back together and then warmed up again,” she told Olympics.com in an exclusive interview.

She wasn’t refreshing the scores. She wasn’t expecting the result.

“I didn’t really follow up with the scores because it’s not something that I can control,” Keys explained. “The only result I can control is my own.”

Instead, says Keys, it was her coaches and the US medical staff that broke the news.

At the end of the final, the young American found herself in second place. Her silver medal represents a first for the United States at the World Championships in rhythmic gymnastics.

“I was just taking a break, and then the coaches plus the medical staff looked at me and they were like… showing me the results and said, ‘You’re second,’” she recalled. “And I was like, wait, really?”

“They started coming up to me and congratulating me, and I was so lost. I was like, are you sure?”
