Aryna Sabalenka reacts as a man proposes to his partner during her US Open match: ‘I looked at my boyfriend and…’

Sporting arenas are no strangers to proposals, and the US Open was no different. During the third-round match between Aryna Sabalenka and Leylah Fernandez, a man proposed to his partner in the stands. The visuals were shown on the big screen during the game, much to the jubilation of the rest of the supporters. The man went down on his knees, taking the ring out of his pocket as he asked his partner for marriage.

The girl was visibly shocked as she placed her hands on her face. Tears of joy soon rolled out. The proposal was immediately accepted, and the duo came close for an embrace.

As soon as the couple got close to each other, the entire crowd started cheering and applauding, and the duo could not stop blushing. The sweet moment even drew a reaction from Sabalenka following the conclusion of her US Open match, which she ended up winning.

Speaking to reporters after the close of the tie, Sabalenka said, “I think it’s the first time that someone proposed during my match, and it was a very sweet moment, but I was just trying not to start like smiling because it’s super cute, and I believe they are super happy right now. I was just trying to keep focusing on my game,” said Sabalenka.

“It was a great moment. And as I said on court, I wish them a happy marriage,” she added.

    ‘Got some ideas’

During the same press conference, a reporter asked Sabalenka whether she thinks the proposal would give others some ideas on how to bring out the big surprise for their partner.

It was then that Sabalenka came up with a brilliant answer, saying she hopes that her boyfriend took some notes. “I looked at my boyfriend. No pressure.”

Speaking of Sabalenka, she is currently dating Georgios Frangulis. While talking with People about her partner, she had revealed, “There was a really tough period where I was really happy to have him by my side, always cheering me up, always making sure that we are doing some fun stuff.”

“But I make sure I kind of forget about tennis and focus on the good things and enjoy my life. Even when things are going wrong in my career. So yeah, he was my biggest support, and yeah, really happy to have him by my side,” she added.

Sabalenka progressed to the fourth round of the US Open after winning 6-3, 7-6 against Fernandez on Friday.

Interestingly, the Dutch have named Shariz Ahmad and Tim Pringle in the squad as the spinners are expected to play an important role in Asian conditions. However, the Scott Edwards-led side will miss all-rounders Bas de Leede and Roelof van der Merwe.

Sabalenka bests Fernandez to reach US Open fourth round

Aryna Sabalenka found herself in a familiar spot Friday night – facing multiple break points in her opening service game, just as she had in the second round earlier this week.

This time, the World No. 1 held firm, saving three break points to take an early lead in a match she never trailed.

Sabalenka defeated No. 31 seed Leylah Fernandez for the first time in her career, winning 6-3, 7-6 (2) in 1 hour and 39 minutes before a packed crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

US Open: Draws | Scores | Order of Play

With the victory, she advanced to the fourth round of the US Open for the fifth consecutive year and avenged her loss to Fernandez in the 2021 semifinals.

“It was definitely an exciting match,” Sabalenka said after the match. “Last time we met, it was a great battle. She played an incredible match, and I wanted this revenge badly, so I’m super happy with the win. She’s a great player, a great competitor and always brings you the fight on court.”

  • Sadam Ali Ponders Another Championship Run at 154

Sadam Ali Ponders Another Championship Run at 154

For most fighters, the goal is to become a world champion. That objective gives them a reason to push themselves in training camp, run the extra miles and stray away from unhealthy food choices.

But despite doing all the right things, for most, reaching the top of the sport isn’t realistic. Yet for Sadam Ali, all of his hard work paid off in the form of the WBO 154-pound title. His 2017 win over Miguel Cotto may have placed him on the map, but his time on top was short-lived.

Things haven’t exactly gone right for Ali since that night in New York’s Madison Square Garden. After losing his belt to Jaime Munguia in May 2018, he grabbed just one more win before a third-round stoppage defeat by Anthony Young in 2019.

That appeared to be the end for the Brooklyn native. But a funny thing happened. The itch came back.

Although it’s been six years since he was last seen in a ring, the 36-year-old returns this coming weekend in Detroit, Michigan, at Wayne State Fieldhouse against Cody Wilson.

Ali (27-3, 14 KOs) says he isn’t hurting for money. He still drives around in luxury vehicles and rocks designer clothes. He knows what it feels like to be a champion.

So why exactly is he coming back? His answer is obvious and simple.

“I’m a fighter,” Ali told The Ring. “This is what I do.”

Wilson, a 31-year-old journeyman, views this as his Super Bowl, but Ali knows how the script is supposed to play out. The question is, what may happen next?

As he looks around the junior middleweight division, he notices things are completely different. Cotto rode off into the sunset a while ago, Munguia campaigns at super middleweight and all of the beltholders are fairly new to the championship scene.

At home, when he walks by his trophy case, he stops and smiles at the WBO title he once held.

Dust, however, is collecting on his hardware and it’s a bit lonely. Ali, while noncommittal about chasing another belt, isn’t ruling out a run.

“I’ve done it before. Anything is possible,” he said. “I’m open to almost anything.”

He doesn’t want to be dismissive of his next opponent. Before he gets caught up in thinking about more gold, he wants to keep Wilson front of mind.

“First things first, I have to win and look good,” Ali said. “We’ll see what happens from there.”
