TAMPERE (Finland) – Rokas Jokubaitis flexed his muscles with a double-double to guide Lithuania to a 94-67 victory over Montenegro and improve to 2-0 in Tampere.

The win also saw Lithuania set a tournament assists record with a collective effort of 35 for the most in a single game since the data was first collected in 1995.

    Turning Point

Jonas Valanciunas reached his milestone of 500 points at FIBA EuroBasket with 3:36 to play in the first quarter with a three-pointer. In reality, his accuracy from the field throughout the first half was pivotal in Lithuania’s second win in Group B. He hit three triples in a dominant first 20 minutes, where Lithuania led 47-28.

From there, Lithuania’s lead peaked at 32 points, as Montenegro was unable to threaten their counterparts despite promising spells in the second half.

    TCL Player of the Game

Lithuania’s floor general, Jokubaitis, dazzled with a stunning double-double of 21 points and 12 assists, also shooting 56 percent from the floor to lead his side to a 2-0 start in Tampere.

Valanciunas scored 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting and added 5 rebounds to his tally, all of which came in a ruthless first-half assault by him and by Lithuania. Nikola Vucevic led Montenegro with an 20-point, 10-rebound double-double.

    Stats Don’t Lie

Lithuania struggled from three-point land in their opening game against Great Britain, making only two from their 19 attempts. Against Montenegro, they had no such trouble, as they went 5-for-10 in the first half, ending on 9-for-22.

Montenegro connected on only one of their triples from 12 attempts in the first half, and shot 14 percent overall.

    Bottom Line

Lithuania will face Germany on Saturday in what could be a pivotal matchup between the two unbeaten sides in Group B. Montenegro will face the hosts, Finland on the same day, still seeking its first victory.

    They Said

“Again, we had good energy, perfect effort, speed, everything was good, and we got a record for assists. I’m happy, it was a good victory,” – Rimas Kurtinaitis, Lithuania head coach.

“Not much to say. One more very bad game for us, 26 turnovers. They scored 94 points, a little bit embarrassing for us.

“I’m still believing we can play better basketball than these two games. This is the worst basketball Montenegro has ever played in the history.” – Bosko Radovic, Montenegro head coach.

“Yeah, we know what kind of [team] Lithuania is, but it is what it is. Tomorrow we have one more big game for us against the home team, so we need to take a rest, prepare as much as we can for tomorrow’s game, and get onto the court with a lot more energy, a lot more focus if we want to win the game,” – Djordje Jovanovic, Montenegro.

Jessica Gadirova set for first international competition since 2023

Olympic pommel horse champion Rhys McClenaghan: “[Surgery] was the only choice.”

History-making Irish gymnast Rhys McClenaghan may be out of competition at the moment, as he recovers from recent shoulder surgery, but that hasn’t slowed him down.

“At no time have I been off gymnastics. I’ve continued to train,” he said, according to a recent interview with the Belfast Telegraph.

McClenaghan, the first Irish gymnast to win both world and Olympic titles, underwent shoulder surgery earlier this summer. He says the operation was unavoidable after years of wear and tear in training.

“Carrying my body weight around all day on the pommel, pushing my body to the limit…it eventually caught up with me,” he said. “The recovery time is quite long, but it was the only choice.”

While he is likely to miss October’s World Championships, McClenaghan is far from done with his sport.

After the successful operation, he said, “I’ve been struggling with this injury for a while now, so I’m delighted that everything went to plan with the operation and I can make my way back to maintaining my spot as the best in the world at what I do.

“This is the reality of sport, and I love all of the challenges it throws my way. Champion mindset.”

India’s Dilbag Singh bags silver medal

India added two more medals to its tally at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 on Friday, with Dilbag Singh claiming silver in the men’s 94kg and Vanshita Verma bagging bronze in the women’s 86kg in Ahmedabad.

Dilbag Singh came agonisingly close to gold in the 94kg final at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.

The Indian weightlifter registered 153kg in snatch and followed it up with 189kg in clean and jerk for a total of 342kg as he finished just one kilogramme behind Malaysia’s Mohamad Syahmi, who secured gold with 343kg (150kg snatch+193kg clean and jerk).

Australia’s Oliver Saxton completed the podium with 336kg (150kg+186kg).

Dilbag opened the snatch at 148kg, then improved to 153kg on his second attempt. He tried to lift 156kg on his third but missed. His 153kg snatch had placed him on top of the standings by three kg after the first half of the weightlifting competition.

In the clean and jerk, Dilbag started at 182kg, then went up to 186kg. He saved his best for the final round, completing 189kg to finish with a total of 342kg.

In the women’s 86kg division, Vanshita Verma clinched bronze with a total of 222kg. She cleared 95kg in snatch and 127kg in clean and jerk, edging Nigeria’s Brenda Uchenna (221kg) by a kilogram.

Australia’s Eileen Cikamatana dominated the field for gold with 255kg (110kg+145kg), while 17-year-old Litia Nacagilevu of New Zealand impressed with 235kg (107kg+128kg) to take silver.

Vanshita started her snatch with a lift of 89kg and successfully hoisted 92kg on the second attempt. On her final try, she managed 95kg to finish strongly.

In the clean and jerk, Vanshita began with 122kg. She then improved to 126kg on her second lift. On her final attempt, Vanshita lifted 127kg.

The 30th edition of the championships features over 300 lifters from 31 nations.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Mirabai Chanu had kicked off India’s campaign with a gold in the women’s 48kg, securing qualification for the next year’s Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 will conclude on Saturday.

NBA birthdays: Players born on June 13

With over 5,000 players in NBA history, at least one player was born on every day of the calendar year – including four leap day ballers. Our day-by-day breakdown of the players born on each day of the year continues.

Below are the most notable NBA players born on June 13.

    Sarunas Marciulionis (1964)

Marciulionis was the 127th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors. While he played his first two seasons overseas, this southpaw became a stud once he came to the NBA. The Lithuanian was one of the best bench players in the league through his first four seasons in Golden State, averaging 14.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game in that span. Marciulionis finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting in 1992, closing his playing career with one-year stints in Seattle, Sacramento and Denver before officially retiring in 1997.

That was only the start for Marciulionis, as he helped spearhead the revival of the Lithuanian National Team after its separation from Russia, leading them to medals in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. The guard-forward also helped found the Lithuanian Basketball League and the North European Basketball League. All of those contributions earned Marciulionis a Hall of Fame induction in 2014, and he’s one of the primary reasons Lithuanian basketball is so relevant today.

    Hassan Whiteside (1989)

“Count Blockula” was one of the best defensive centers throughout his 10-year career. The big man was selected 33rd overall in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings but didn’t really break out until he rejoined the NBA after a two-year stint overseas. Whiteside signed with the Miami Heat in 2014, finishing 14th in Defensive Player of the Year voting in his return to the league. The following season, Whiteside finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting and made All-Defensive Second Team, leading the league with 3.7 blocks per game.

Whiteside followed that up with another league-leading season, averaging a league-best 14.1 rebounds while finishing fifth in DPOY voting in 2016-17. He led the league with 2.9 bpg in his one season with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2019-20 and then had short stints with the Kings and Utah Jazz before playing his final game in 2022. Whiteside is still playing in Puerto Rico, but the big man averaged 12.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks throughout his 10-year NBA career.

Ruben Amorim says temperament makes him feel he ‘wants to quit’ United some days | Manchester United

Ruben Amorim admitted his temperament makes him feel some days that he “wants to quit” and others that he would like to be Manchester United’s head coach for 20 years, as he said he would continue to give emotional post-match interviews.

Amorim said after United’s Carabao Cup defeat at Grimsby on Wednesday that “something has to change” and that “my players spoke really loud about what they want”, causing uncertainty about his future.

Asked about this on Friday, he was defiant. “Guys, to be really honest, every time that we have in the future one defeat like that, I’m going to be like that,” Amorim said. “I’m going to say that sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players.

“This is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that. In that moment I was so frustrated and annoyed. And I know you have a lot of experienced people talking about the way I should perform with the media, to be more constant, to be more calm: I’m not going to be like that.”

Amorim was asked whether it is understandable that his post-Grimsby reaction caused uncertainty regarding whether he will resign. “If you are in one way, if you have this kind of behaviour, you have to understand that you have things that are good [from] that type of behaviour, that you have the other side of the coin. So I understand that.

“And again, sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years. Sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don’t want to be with them. So, again, I need to improve on that. It’s going to be hard.”

As the Guardian reported this week, Kobbie Mainoo wishes to leave. But Amorim said he valued the midfielder. “I want Kobbie to stay,” he said. “”He needs to fight for his place, and we need Kobbie. So that is not going to change. I understand that the players that are not playing at this moment are disappointed. You have to fight during the week [in training].”

  • McLaren’s Lando Norris sets the pace again in Free Practice 2 as session disrupted by two red flags

McLaren’s Lando Norris sets the pace again in Free Practice 2 as session disrupted by two red flags

Lando Norris set the pace again in Free Practice 2 for the Dutch Grand Prix, with the session interrupted by two red flags.

The McLaren driver, who trails team mate Oscar Piastri by nine points in the Drivers’ Championship, completed a clean sweep of fastest times on Friday while the session ended early for Lance Stroll and Alex Albon after crashes.

With conditions dry but the threat of rain looming, drivers immediately headed out on to the Zandvoort Circuit for crucial running, with Liam Lawson leading the train of cars out of the pit lane.

Fastest in FP1, Norris continued his impressive Friday running by initially moving to the top of the times on a 1m 12.615s with the medium tyre, before being usurped by Spaniards Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso as drops of rain began to fall.

On his next flying lap, Norris became the first driver to dip below the 1m 12s mark, posting a 1m 11.294s as Stroll slotted into second, his Aston Martin team mate Alonso complaining over the radio after being held up by Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes.

The Kick Saubers of Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg moved into second and third respectively with the soft Pirelli tyre, with home hero Max Verstappen posting the fourth fastest time, less than three-tenths slower than Norris on the medium rubber.

Approaching the 10-minute mark, Haas’ Oliver Bearman jumped to the top of the leaderboard with a 1m 11.113s just before a red flag was deployed after a heavy crash for Stroll at the banked Turn 3.

With the Canadian reporting he was okay over the radio and the wreckage of his Aston Martin recovered, proceedings resumed with 39 minutes of the one-hour session remaining as several drivers ventured out, including Isack Hadjar.

The Racing Bulls driver had not left the pit lane due to a technical issue prior to the red flag, but was forced to come to a stop on his out-lap, with his car quickly recovered under a Virtual Safety Car.

Hulkenberg moved to the top of the standings just past the halfway point on a 1m 11.080s with the help of soft tyres, as Lewis Hamilton suffered his second 360-degree spin of Friday on the exit of Turn 9, having set the fastest opening sector.

Lap times soon began to plummet as the sun broke through the clouds, Alonso posting a 1m 09.977s before Norris lowered the benchmark further to a 1m 09.890s, both drivers on a set of soft tyres.

A second red flag was soon called with 21 minutes remaining, Albon having gone off at Turn 1 and after damaging his front wing against the barrier, the Williams became beached in the gravel.

The session resumed with 16 minutes remaining and as the threat of rain had diminished, drivers focused on race simulations with the order remaining as before the stoppage.

It left Norris fastest, 0.087s clear of Alonso with Piastri third, the McLaren driver under investigation for a pit lane incident with George Russell as the pair made minor contact.

The Mercedes driver finished fourth from Verstappen, who was sixth-tenths away from Norris, as Hamilton, the second Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Franco Colapinto (Alpine) and Hulkenberg completed the top 10.

Bearman finished 11th ahead of Antonelli, the Mercedes driver making up for lost time after crashing early on in FP1.

Bortoleto led Lawson, Esteban Ocon (Haas) and Sainz (Williams), with Albon, Stroll, Pierre Gasly’s Alpine and the time-less Hadjar completing the order.

Teams will have one more free practice session on Saturday ahead of the crucial Qualifying session for the Dutch Grand Prix.

  • 10 players who could be selected to All-Star team for 1st time in 2026

10 players who could be selected to All-Star team for 1st time in 2026

New York’s Mikal Bridges (left) and OG Anunoby could fill a pair of projected East All-Star openings next season.

    • Download the NBA App

Given the way NBA players become All-Stars – that is, the selection process, not simply the level of their performances – we shouldn’t be surprised some worthy players have fallen through the cracks.

Three separate constituencies, using distinct criteria, put together the rosters each season. Starters are selected by the votes of fans, the players and the media. They are generally pretty obvious choices, 10 players from a field of maybe 12 or 13 strong candidates.

The East and West rosters are fleshed out, though, by the conference coaches, who tend to factor in the W-L record of potential All-Stars’ teams. It’s an arbitrary filter, frankly, because great individual players can find themselves stranded on shabby teams. But the coaches’ focus on winning often rewards second fiddles on teams above .500.

Then there are the commissioner’s choices when injuries arise. Sometimes the boss goes with someone who had the next-highest vote total from the staters’ ballot. Sometimes, though, he does not.

For as much as the All-Star Game gets treated as the Fans’ Game, there often are surprise picks and players making their debuts. Last year, there were five first-timers – Victor Wembanyama, Evan Mobley, Cade Cunningham, Jalen Williams and Alperen Sengun. It’s rare when there isn’t at least one or two.

Here is a list of 10 individuals who might dip their toes in this February. We’re running back three from last year’s list, along with seven others who seem capable of taking the big step by midseason.

Please note that we’re going by general All-Star worthiness, without adjusting for the possible USA-International format being talked about for the 2026 game. That could suppress the number of domestic stars and inflate the number of foreign-borns, compared to the tradition of 12 East and 12 West representatives:

    1. Chet Holmgren, Oklahoma City Thunder

Check out the top plays and moments of Chet Holmgren from the 2025 NBA Finals.

No one is anticipating Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to drop off any Western Conference roster, but there’s plenty of precedent for Oklahoma City – as defending champs and continued top contender – to add a third All-Star. He was in the running a year ago but didn’t make it, less due to his performance than to the glut of bigs vying for the same spots. It might take some combination of injuries to thin the frontcourt herd, which includes Wembanyama, Sengun, Nikola Jokić, Anthony Davis and Jaren Jackson Jr.

2 & 3. OG Anunoby or Mikal Bridges, New York Knicks

These were the other two nominees from last year’s list who didn’t make it to All-Star Sunday. There are spots in the East to be had, with Boston’s Jayson Tatum, Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton and Damian Lillard, an All-Star with Milwaukee last year, all absent this season. The trick for both two-way Knicks is to shine enough behind Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, then not split consideration with each other.

    4. Franz Wagner, Orlando Magic

Teammate Paolo Banchero broke through as an All-Star in 2024, and Wagner could do the same this season. He scores enough – 24.5 ppg last season – but needs to hike his accuracy after hitting 29.5% of his 3-pointers (including 7-of-37 in the first round vs. Boston). The versatile 6-foot-10 wing just turned 24 this week, and both Orlando and he are poised for big improvement.

    5. Ivica Zubac, LA Clippers

That logjam of centers and power forwards cited above as a hurdle for Holmgren applies to Zubac as well. The 7-footer from Bosnia and Herzegovina has been a prorated double-double machine for most of his NBA career, but it was in his ninth season that he played enough minutes in enough games to hit those numbers (16.8 ppg, 12.6 rpg) for real. He led the league in both offensive and defensive rebounds, and was an All-Defensive second-teamer.

    6. Jamal Murray, Denver Nuggets

It might surprise some that Murray isn’t anywhere close to the gold standard for 20-point scorers who haven’t sniffed All-Star appreciation. Actually, CJ McCollum has 10 such seasons to Murray’s four, while never earning an invitation. But Murray is a renowned playoff riser, owns a championship ring and has a teammate, Jokić, who has been Denver’s solo All-Star all seven times he’s gone. If the Nuggets’ offseason remodeling pays off, Murray might thrive enough to join the Joker.

    7. Jaden McDaniels, Minnesota Timberwolves

McDaniels and Wolves star Anthony Edwards have grown up together, linked since arriving in Minnesota as rookies in 2020. McDaniels doesn’t have Ant’s exuberant personality, but he has been asserting himself more in coach Chris Finch’s offense. And he still is a willing cover for anyone, at any spot, on the court. That’s exactly whom conference coaches like to vote for at All-Star time, if the Wolves’ record gives them the green light.

    8. Norman Powell, Miami Heat

Powell is a guy whose star has been on the rise for a while. After two seasons picking up Kia Sixth Man votes, he started every game he played last season and cracked the 20 ppg level. With his offseason trade to Miami, Powell can thrive in some old Dwyane Wade action while flexing his 41.9% 3-point shooting over the past four seasons. At 32, though, Powell is closing in on Nat (Sweetwater) Clifton, who at 34 became the oldest first-time All-Star.

9 & 10. Amen Thompson (Houston Rockets) or Ausar Thompson (Detroit Pistons)

You know about his All-Defensive chops. But the Rockets rising star also rocked the rim last season.

The athletic ability of these twins is off the charts, so if either develops a more reliable offensive package, he could accompany an All-Star teammate – Şengün or Cunningham, respectively – as his team’s second choice. Amen already played on All-Star Sunday via the roundabout mini-tournament last year that included a Rising Stars unit. But we’re talking about the big game – one that twins Dick and Tom Van Arsdale reached together in 1970 and 1971.

Others to watch: Jalen Johnson, Hawks; Myles Turner, Milwaukee; Coby White, Bulls; Derrick White, Celtics.

1-500: Valanciunas hits FIBA EuroBasket scoring milestone

    The official EuroBasket app

TAMPERE (Finland) – Lithuania’s Jonas Valanciunas hit the milestone of 500 points at FIBA EuroBasket in what is his sixth appearance at the tournament.

The 33-year-old has now scored more than 500 points in FIBA EuroBasket competitions since making his debut in 2011 in Lithuania – averaging 12.4 points per game before this summer’s edition.

Here’s a look back at his road to the new milestone.

    1st points

Lithuania vs Poland, September 2 – FIBA EuroBasket 2011

While Valanciunas made his international debut against Great Britain in Lithuania’s opening game at FIBA EuroBasket 2011, his first points would come in the following game with a seven-point cameo in a 97-77 victory over Poland in Panevezys.

    100 points

Lithuania vs Latvia, September 6 – FIBA EuroBasket 2013

After averaging 8.4 points per game at his first EuroBasket, Valanciunas would hit the triple-figure milestone and bag his first double-double in the third game of the 2013 edition in Slovenia with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance in a 67-59 victory over Latvia. Lithuania went on to reach the Final, but lost out to Tony Parker and the mighty France.

    200 points

Lithuania vs Belgium, September 7 – FIBA EuroBasket 2015

While Lithuania suffered a heartbreakingly close loss against Belgium in Riga, Valanciunas would move beyond 200 points with a game-high 25 points, along with 12 rebounds. The minor setback would not deter Lithuania’s progress in the competition, as Valanciunas would erupt for 26 in the Quarter-Final win over Italy, en route to the Final, this time coming up short against Spain.

    300 points

Lithuania vs Israel, September 2 – FIBA EuroBasket 2017

In the second game of the 2017 edition, Valanciunas would add 11 points in Lithuania’s 88-73 success over Israel. The big man later scored 27 points against Germany to conclude the Group Phase, but the journey was cut short thanks to Slovenia in the Round of 16. Valanciunas concluded with a double-double tournament average of 15.8 points and 12 rebounds per game.

    400 points

Lithuania vs France, September 3 – FIBA EuroBasket 2022

Valanciunas went past the 400-point mark with a team-high 15 points in a narrow loss to France in the Group Phase. A EuroBasket career-best performance against Germany followed, as he exploded for 34 points, before the Baltic giants exited in the Round of 16 for the second consecutive tournament.

    500 points

Lithuania vs Montenegro, August 29 – FIBA EuroBasket 2025

Valanciunas scored 18 points against Great Britain in the first game of his sixth appearance at a EuroBasket tournament, and then reached the 500-point mark against Montenegro in Lithuania’s second game with 12 points coming in the opening quarter alone including back-to-back threes.
