Bojana Popović joins Denmark women’s national team as assistant coach
Bojana Popović will join the coaching staff of the Denmark women’s national handball team as assistant coach, linking up with Helle Thomsen, the new coach of the Scandinavian side.
A legendary former player and with plenty of experience as a coach over the last five years, Popović will start her role on 1 September , ahead of the team’s gathering in Frederikshavn on 15 September, as Denmark prepare for the 2025 IHF Women’s World Championship, hosted by Germany and the Netherlands, between 26 November and 14 December.
Popović, a four-time Player of the Year in Denmark and a six-time winner of the Champions League with Slagelse DH, Viborg HK and Buducnost, featured for eight years for Danish clubs, starting her stint in Slagelse in 2002, before moving to Viborg in 2007, where she stayed until 2010.
“I have had good contact with Bojana for several years, and it will be fantastic to have her commitment and temperament on our team. Coming from Eastern Europe, she brings a passion for handball that will complement and energize our Scandinavian culture. Bojana is very talented, and I am looking forward to working closely with her,” said Denmark’s new coach, Helle Thomsen, for the official website of the Danish Handball Federation (DanskHåndbold).
Popović was part of the Montenegro team which secured the silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the only medal won in history by the nation in the competition. She was also part of the Yugoslavia team which won the bronze medal at the 2001 IHF Women’s World Championship.
After retiring, in 2016, Popović worked her way on the ladder, becoming the head coach of the Montenegro women’s national team, a position she held between 2021 and 2024, finishing seventh at the 2023 IHF Women’s World Championship and leading her side to a bronze medal at the EHF EURO 2022.
Popović, a former left back known for her penchant of scoring, is also the current head coach of Budućnost Podgorica, the Montenegrin powerhouse which she has been leading since 2020.
“It is a great honour and privilege to become part of the Danish national team’s coaching staff. I am aware of the responsibility and the high expectations, but I believe in the quality and experience within Denmark that give us every reason to aim even higher. My task will be to support Helle Thomsen and the entire team to reach new levels. I believe in hard work, discipline, and unity, and together with the players and fans, we can continue to write history,” said Popović.
The first test for Helle Thomsen and Bojana Popović will be the 2025 IHF Women’s World Championship. Denmark will feature in Group A, in Rotterdam, where they face Croatia, Japan and Romania.
Denmark have finished third, winning the bronze medal, at the last two editions of the IHF Women’s World Championship, in 2021 and 2023, and ended second at the last two editions of the EHF EURO, in 2022 and 2024, under Jesper Jensen’s guidance. The Scandinavian powerhouse also finished third at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, finishing on the podium in the past five major international competitions.

Valtteri Bottas believes ‘the sky’s the limit’ for Cadillac as he reflects on expectations for 2026
Valtteri Bottas is confident that “the sky’s the limit” for Cadillac as the team prepare for their debut in 2026, though the Finn has also acknowledged that he and the squad need to be “realistic on the targets” for the start of their maiden campaign.
It was confirmed this week that Bottas and Sergio Perez will both return to the grid to form the American outfit’s line-up next season and, in a bonus episode of the F1 Nation podcast, Bottas spoke of his excitement at joining the new project.
“I signed a while ago but for me, once we had the announcement in New York, that’s really when it hit me,” he explained. “It’s almost the same feeling as when I started, like I’m an F1 driver again, so it feels great. I feel like a kid.
“It’s a really exciting, interesting project for me. Obviously, they’ve got a great structure already. They have big plans for the future and, for me, being part of something that you can really start from a blank page, a new Formula 1 team, there’s so much input that I can put into it.
“I know there’s a lot of work to do, but I think it’s really exciting starting something new and being part of it.”
Bottas believes that his extensive experience in the sport – having raced for Williams, Mercedes and Kick Sauber across 12 seasons, during which time he collected 10 victories with the Silver Arrows – will be beneficial to Cadillac as they find their feet.
However, the 36-year-old says that he is also being pragmatic about the possibility of the new team facing some challenges when they first hit the grid in 2026.
“We need to be realistic,” Bottas conceded. “I need to be realistic on the targets. The main thing is, first of all, to be there at the first test in January, to finish the first race, and then we kind of go from there so, mentally almost kind of preparing for the worst, that it’s going to be a difficult start, but you never know.
“It is a new regulation change again in Formula 1 with the power units and with the cars, so there can be opportunities, but we will take it step by step. By working hard and then eventually seeing the fruit, that’s going to be the thing that keeps me going.
“The sky’s the limit for the team. There’s obviously a target to make progress as quickly as possible. The team is going to be here to stay for a long time in F1, so I’m not going to set a result target or anything, but we want to see progress and we want to be successful.
“As I said, the starting point could be tricky, but there’s only a way up from there and that’s exciting. They’re serious. They’re not here to finish last. And that is really encouraging and good to see.”

Diamond League Final: Georgia Hunter Bell, Dina Asher-Smith and Max Burgin impress in Zurich
Great Britain’s Georgia Hunter Bell, Dina Asher-Smith and Max Burgin produced impressive performances at the Diamond League Final as they finalised their preparations for next month’s World Championships.
The trio, each named in the British squad for Tokyo earlier this week, achieved second-place finishes in Zurich with just 16 days until the action gets under way in Tokyo on 13 September.
Having last week chosen to target the 800m in pursuit of another global podium, Olympic 1500m bronze medallist Hunter Bell ran a personal best one minute 55.96 seconds in that event as she finished runner-up in a thrilling finish against Switzerland’s Audrey Werro (1:55.91).
That time moved Hunter Bell, whose decision to switch to the 800m could see her line up alongside training partner and Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson in the world final, above Dame Kelly Holmes to third on the British all-time list.
“It would be amazing [to make the world podium],” Hunter Bell told BBC World Service Sport.
“I don’t think two [British] athletes have been on the podium together since maybe Sebastian Coe, Steve Cram or Steve Ovett, so if me and Keely could do that, it would be pretty special.”

Champions League draw: Alexander-Arnold primed for swift Liverpool reunion | Champions League
Trent Alexander-Arnold will make a swift return to Anfield after Liverpool were drawn to host Real Madrid in this season’s Champions League.
The right-back will face his old teammates months after his controversial move to the Bernabéu, which drew vocal disapproval from sections of the Liverpool support.
It was one of several high-profile reunions produced in a league phase draw that also pits Kevin De Bruyne, now with Napoli, against Manchester City. The Napoli manager, Antonio Conte, will also meet his former club Chelsea. Arsenal will prime themselves for the latest appearance of Harry Kane, a long-time nemesis while at Spurs, in Bayern Munich colours at the Emirates.
The sprawling draw, which paired each of the 36 contenders with eight opponents, offered England’s six representatives a mixed bag. Liverpool will also host Real’s city neighbours, Atlético, as well as softer-looking tasks against PSV Eindhoven and the Azeri champions, Qarabag. They will travel to Inter, Eintracht Frankfurt, Marseille and Galatasaray.

Photograph: Thomas Coex/AFP/Getty Images Manchester City will renew acquaintances with Real Madrid, who they have faced 10 times in the past five and a half years. Madrid most recently defeated them 6-3 on aggregate in the playoff round in February and will host this season’s tie at the Bernabéu. City will also visit newcomers Bodø/Glimt, Villarreal and Monaco; Pep Guardiola’s side will host Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Galatasaray along with Napoli.
Arsenal will hope to avenge their quarter-final defeat against Kane and Bayern of 2023-24. Atlético, Olympiakos and the Kazakh debutants Kairat Almaty will also visit north London; last season’s Premier League runners-up will travel to Inter, Club Brugge, Slavia Prague and Athletic Bilbao.
Chelsea face a relatively tough-looking path through the league phase. They will meet Barcelona, Benfica, Ajax and the Cypriot side Pafos at Stamford Bridge, playing away ties against Bayern, Atalanta, Napoli and Qarabag. The theme of reunions persists for Tottenham, who will travel to Bodø/Glimt after defeating the Norwegians in the Europa League semi-finals in May.
Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich knocked Arsenal out in 2023-24. Photograph: David Klein/Reuters Spurs also face the reigning champions, Paris Saint-Germain, who edged them out on penalties in the Super Cup a fortnight ago, at the Parc des Princes. Their assignments on the road include Frankfurt, another opponent from 2024-25, and Monaco. Thomas Frank’s team host Dortmund, Villarreal, Slavia Prague and Copenhagen.
There will be few easy games for Newcastle, particularly if they find themselves shorn of Alexander Isak before the competition begins. St James’ Park will play host to Barcelona, Benfica, PSV and Athletic Bilbao; their fans will await trips to PSG, Bayer Leverkusen, Marseille and Union Saint-Gilloise.
Other noteworthy clashes include a rerun of the 2021 final between PSG and Bayern, along with an epic trip to the Kazakh capital for Real Madrid when they face Kairat Almaty.
The first set of games will take place between 16 and 18 September; five subsequent rounds are scheduled before mid-December, with two more lined up for January. The order of the fixtures, along with dates and kick-off times, will be released on Saturday.

Venus and Fernandez take Armstrong by storm, advance to second round
NEW YORK — “Venus, she’s a legend. She’s an icon. Growing up, when I first started playing tennis, people asked me, ‘Who did you watch when you were growing up?’ I always said Justine Henin and the Williams sisters.”
Leylah Fernandez said that matter of factly, on the rooftop of the player clubhouse at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio during a casual conversation in early August.
Less than a month later, in a scene she likely would not have predicted, she was sharing a court with her idol on Louis Armstrong Stadium in front of more than 14,000 rabid fans who were no doubt thrilled to have one more opportunity to see Venus play.
And the result was a good one for the American-Canadian pairing. The duo, which accepted a wild card into the US Open doubles draw on Tuesday, upset sixth-seeded Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez, 7-6 (4), 6-3, in their first-round matchup on an unseasonably windy day in Queens. (It was downright uncomfortable if you were dressed for summer, though the fired-up crowd hardly seemed to notice.)
Towering over her partner — a former US Open singles finalist and doubles quarterfinalist — and looking at times like a big sister, the 45-year-old Williams earned her first win in three New York tries after bowing out in the revamped mixed doubles tournament last week and losing to Karolina Muchova on Monday.
It looked bleak to start, with Williams and Fernandez falling behind 5-2 in the first set, but they rallied to even it at 5. And with the thunderous crowd firmly in their corner, they eked out the tiebreak to take the first set and grab firm control of the match.
The next set was far less dramatic, as the unseeded pair jumped out to a 4-1 lead and comfortably closed it out.
“I’m used to being the big sister,” Williams told reporters after the match, “so I’m kind of asking her what she wants. It’s important for her to feel comfortable. Theoretically I have more experience, but she’s been playing a lot more matches, so maybe that makes us neck and neck in terms of how we can compete.
“But I think we just had to see what happened, because you never know what’s going to happen in a match and you have to adjust. Once we got down, I feel like we just put our foot on the gas.”
It was a full circle moment for the 22-year-old Fernandez, who remembers practicing with Venus outside of Lexington, Kentucky back in 2020. She was new to the Hologic WTA Tour at the time and didn’t know many players, and the gesture was a meaningful one.
“I thought I was going to be very intimidated, but she was super nice and welcoming,” Fernandez recalled during the Cincinnati Open.
She certainly appeared nice and welcoming again on Thursday, as the two embraced after securing the win.
This was Williams’ first doubles victory in Queens in 11 years, though she’s certainly no stranger to doubles success at this venue. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion won the doubles tournament here in 1999, alongside her sister Serena, and the pair won it a second time in 2009.
Williams and Fernandez will play Eri Hozumi and Ulrikke Eikeri in the second round on Saturday.
