REIGNING Caribbean Premier League (CPL) champs St Lucia Kings came to the party on home soil on August 26 when they got a four-wicket victory over Guyana Amazon Warriors in a high-scoring affair at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, Beausejour, St Lucia.

In what was a meeting between last year’s finalists, the Kings put on a royal display as a classy innings of 73 off 35 balls by young talent Ackeem Auguste saw the hosts chase down Guyana’s 203-run target with 11 balls to spare.

Towards the end of the first innings, it appeared as though the Amazon Warriors had seized all the momentum as a punishing innings from Romario Shepherd (73 not out off 34) saw them score 107 runs off the last six overs to end on 202 for six. The carnage started in the 15th over as Shepherd hit seamer Oshane Thomas (one for 63) for three sixes in an over which also had three no-balls and cost the Kings 33 runs. Keon Gaston (two for 57) also came in for rough treatment at the death as he bowled six wides in the 17th over, which went for a whopping 27 runs.

With their team stuttering at 78 for five at one stage, Shepherd and Iftikhar Ahmed (33 off 27) gave the innings much-needed impetus with their 102-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

At the halfway stage, Shepherd said he felt a score of 200 was par on the batting surface.

In their response, the Kings proved that statement to be true as the 21-year-old Auguste and New Zealand’s Tim Seifert (37 off 24) took their team to a splendid 86 for one at the end of the power play after the loss of Johnson Charles (13) in the second over. Auguste made his intentions clear when he hit Warriors captain Imran Tahir (one for 46) for a six and three successive fours to end the power play.

Auguste didn’t let up there as he brought up his fifty off just 19 balls and continued to dominate the 87-run stand with Seifert. The Kiwi batsman was dismissed by Tahir in the tenth over as the Kings still had work to do, needing 92 off the last ten overs.

New batsman Roston Chase (12) was the next man to be dismissed, while Auguste followed soon after as the Kings still required 63 off the last 44 balls. The-in form Tim David (25 off 12) wasted no time as he cracked two fours and a six in his cameo, with Aaron Jones chipping in with 16 off 12 as the St Lucian franchise cruised to 203 for six to get their second win of the season.

Jediah Blades and Gudakesh Motie led the Warriors attack with two wickets apiece.

    Summarised Scores:

GUYANA AMAZON WARRIORS: 202/6 from 20 overs (Romario Shepherd 73 not out, Iftikhar Ahmed 33, Ben McDermott 30; Keon Gaston 2/57, David Wiese 1/30) vs ST LUCIA KINGS: 203/6 from 18.1 overs (Ackeem Auguste 73, Tim Seifert 37, Tim David 25; Gudakesh Motie 2/32, Jediah Blades 2/35). Kings won by four wickets.

Rising tennis star Alexandra Eala falls to Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in second round match at Flushing Meadows

Alexandra Eala’s run at the 2025 US Open came to a premature close on Wednesday (27 August), as the talented 20-year-old suffered a straight sets defeat 4-6, 3-6 at the hands of Spanish tennis player Cristina Bucsa.

The second round match lasted one hour and 22 minutes, with both players seizing on key opportunities to dazzle the crowd in a thrilling encounter between two unseeded players in the women’s singles bracket.

As disappointing as the loss may be for Eala, she leaves Flushing Meadows with history in tow, after becoming the first player from the Philippines to win a Grand Slam match in the Open era, defeating 14th seed Clara Tauson in the first round on Sunday (25 August).

For now, she’ll rest and regroup, before continuing her upward grind towards the tennis stratosphere in the tournaments to come.

Chelsea close in on deal for Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho | Chelsea

Chelsea are close to an agreement to sign Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho in a deal likely to be worth between £35m and £40m.

Talks are yet to conclude but there is an expectation United will lower their £50m asking price and reach a compromise that will allow the winger to move to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are waiting to hear back from United and are confident the deal will go ahead. Garnacho has no future under Ruben Amorim but Chelsea regard the Argentinian as a top talent and believe they can get his career back on track.

It is understood Chelsea are confident they will not have to wait for the proposed sales of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson to go through before completing a move for Garnacho. Chelsea need to meet the terms of a Uefa settlement agreement stipulating they must have a “positive transfer balance” to register new players for the Champions League. The club are relaxed about the situation, however, with sources at Stamford Bridge stressing that suggestions they are under pressure to raise funds have been exaggerated.

The desire to bring in another winger means Garnacho is viewed as a bigger priority than the RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons, who has emerged as a target for Tottenham. Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea head coach, uses a system that depends heavily on players staying wide and stretching the play. Chelsea want four wingers and see Garnacho competing with Jamie Gittens for a spot on the left.

Garnacho fell out of favour last season and has faced questions over his attitude. Yet his talent is not in doubt – he played a crucial role in United beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final in 2024 – and Chelsea have done extensive background checks on his character. Chelsea believe that Garnacho will thrive in a different environment.

Maresca wants plenty of depth in attack and has signed Liam Delap, João Pedro, Gittens and Estêvão Willian. Chelsea hold an interest in Fermín López but Barcelona do not want to sell the attacking midfielder. López could be an alternative to Simons.

Chelsea are confident they will sell Nkunku and Jackson. Nkunku has interest from leading European sides, as does Jackson, a target for Aston Villa, Bayern Munich, Newcastle, Juventus and Napoli. Bayern are interested in a loan for Jackson, something Chelsea will only agree to if there is an obligation to buy.

Roma, Leizpig and teams in England are interested in the 19-year-old winger Tyrique George. Chelsea are still waiting for firm interest to materialise in Raheem Sterling. Fulham are a possible destination for Sterling.

Personal Touch Helps To Extend Ganassi’s Championship Magic

Alex Palou secured his fourth NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship Aug. 10 in the BITNILE.COM Grand Prix of Portland presented by askROI.

Palou officially receives his third consecutive Astor Challenge Cup trophy following Sunday’s Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix presented by WillScot at Nashville Superspeedway, airing at 2 p.m. ET on FOX, FOX One, FOX Deportes, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

The Spaniard enters the season finale with eight wins, the most in a single season since Sebastien Bourdais in 2007. Among those wins was a victory in the 109th Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, making Palou the first driver since Dario Franchitti to win the “500” and the championship in the same year, also with Ganassi in 2010.

Palou’s statistical dominance continues: six NTT P1 Awards, the most since Will Power’s same tally in 2017, and 12 podiums, the most in a single season since Scott Dixon achieved the same number during his 2008 title run. Only Alex Zanardi (15 in 1998) and Al Unser (15 in 1970) have topped that podium mark in the last half-century.

Joining Palou on the championship podium Sunday will be Chip Ganassi, team owner and architect of one of the greatest dynasties in modern motorsport. This year’s title marks the 17th championship for Ganassi, a number that ties his team with Team Penske for most in INDYCAR SERIES history. All 17 were earned within the past three decades.

“It’s very rewarding,” Ganassi said. “To have a driver like Alex (Palou) under your roof is special. You surround him with great people, the right engine, tires, chassis and race strategy, and you end up with a pretty good package.”

The season began with force, including five wins and a runner-up in the first six races, but even Ganassi admits he didn’t expect this level of dominance.

“We knew we had a strong team going in, but no one predicted a year like this,” Ganassi said. “I said at the start of the season we were just tapping into Alex’s talent. Unfortunately for everyone else, I don’t think he’s hit the ceiling yet.”

It’s clear Chip Ganassi Racing hasn’t hit its ceiling yet, either.

The rich winning legacy began with Jimmy Vasser’s title in 1996, continued with back-to-back championships by Zanardi in 1997 and 1998 and a fourth title in succession by Juan Pablo Montoya in 1999.

Six more came via Scott Dixon (2003, 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020) while Franchitti notched three straight (2009-11).

Palou’s era may be the most dominant yet, but Ganassi (photo, above) refuses to compare his drivers across generations.

“That’s like saying Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw, Tom Brady – who’s the best quarterback?” Ganassi said. “Different eras, different teams, different contexts. That’s the great thing about sports: We’ll never really know.”

What Ganassi does know is he likes winners. And no team has won like his in the last 17 years.

Since open-wheel unification in 2008, Chip Ganassi Racing has claimed 12 of 18 championships. In that same span, Team Penske has earned five and Andretti Global one.

Even when comparing across sports, the dominance stands out. Since Ganassi’s first title in 1996, only NASCAR’s Hendrick Motorsports (13 titles) comes close. Red Bull Racing leads Formula One with eight titles in that span. The New England Patriots and Los Angeles Lakers have six championships apiece, the New York Yankees five and the Detroit Red Wings four.

“I’m not blind to the fact that some of our strongest competitors are struggling,” Ganassi said. “That’s part of it. But we’ve stayed consistent.”

Ganassi attributes the sustained success to his team’s culture. But what does Ganassi do differently than others?

“I’d like to think in our team, we work a little harder at giving drivers what they need,” Ganassi said. “That might be something different for Palou than it is (Scott) Dixon, or different than Kyffin (Simpson).

“Different people need different things. We’re not etched in granite with every single thing we do on the team. We personalize, whether it’s the setups or the treatment of people. Everyone’s not the same. I’d like to think we do a good job of getting the most out of our people from top to bottom, from the drivers all the way through the organization.

“That’s what it’s all about. And it’s working.”

He also believes that culture built on superior communication and commitment sets his organization apart and that he creates an environment where his employees can do their best work.

That mindset he instilled in the organization was rooted in his early adult years and the relationships he’s made along the way.

“You spend a lot of your time in life, in your 20s and 30s, of learning, whether it’s in school or in college or whatever,” Ganassi said. “I had this architect friend of mine tell me one time: ‘You get to a point in life where you’re not emulating everyone else, you’re emulating yourself now. That’s who you become one day.’

“I’d like to think I’ve taken a lot from a lot of people. I took a lot from my father. I took a lot from great relationships I’ve had with people at Target. I’ve taken parts of Roger Penske. I learned a lot from Mario Andretti.

“I’ve been fortunate over the years to come in contact with a lot of great people. When you’re in contact with a lot of great people, those things rub off on you.

“I guess that’s a combination of all those is what makes up this championship team.”

Jack Draper pulls out of US Open before second round with arm injury | Jack Draper

Jack Draper has been forced to withdraw before his second‑round match at the US Open because of issues with the arm injury that has disrupted his progress this summer.

Draper, the fifth seed, had already missed seven weeks of competition because of bone stress and bone bruising on his left arm, and he had not competed since his second‑round defeat at Wimbledon last month.

In a statement on social media, Draper wrote: “Hi guys, I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US Open. I tried my very best to be here and give myself every chance to play but the discomfort in my arm has become too much and I have to do what is right and look after myself. Thank you for all the support it means so much to me. Until next year NYC.”

After withdrawing from the pre‑US Open tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati, Draper did not return to competition in any form until the US Open mixed doubles last week, reaching the semi-finals alongside Jessica Pegula. Draper then returned to singles competition on Monday with a difficult four-set win against Federico Agustín Gómez and he had been due to face Zizou Bergs on Thursday.

The past few weeks have marked a significant moment in Draper’s career for other reasons as he launched a lucrative partnership with Vuori in New York, becoming the new face of the American clothing brand after wearing Nike for more than a decade.

In the second half of his first-round singles match, Draper’s serve speeds fell significantly and he was clearly not comfortable fully attacking his forehand, which raised concerns about the condition of his arm. Draper also vomited multiple times during the match.

During his post-match press conference, however, Draper responded to questions about his arm by asserting repeatedly that he felt positive about its progress and he believed it would continue to improve throughout the tournament.

Despite feeling some residual pain, Draper said recent scans had made it clear that he was not compromised. “I think I have two days now again till Thursday,” Draper said.

“It’s getting better each time, each day, more recovery process. I think also competing, there’s more adrenaline that’s going to help me to – I don’t know, it’s about the load of what I’m doing. At the start, you’re kind of building up your load. The more times I’m playing two-and-a-half hours, three hours, that’s going to help my arm adapt to that new feeling. Today it responded amazing.”

After his first-round match, Draper trained on-site at Flushing Meadows on both Tuesday and Wednesday morning before deciding to withdraw from the tournament.

Afghanistan are gearing up for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 by participating in a T20I tri-series against Pakistan and the UAE, starting Friday in Sharjah. This tournament provides the Afghan team a perfect chance to refine their strategies and gain crucial insights on Pakistan, one of their Asia Cup opponents, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The selectors have maintained nearly the same squad for both events, with only Naveen-ul-Haq absent from the tri-series lineup. Abdollah Ahmadzai has been brought in to replace him in the 17-member squad. The 22-year-old fast bowler, who has taken 14 wickets in 10 T20s, is yet to make his international debut and has been named among the reserves for the Asia Cup.

This tri-series marks Afghanistan’s first white-ball matches since the Champions Trophy ended in February 2025, offering a vital opportunity for the team to regain their rhythm.

A notable inclusion is mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar, who is poised to debut in T20Is during the tri-series. Ghazanfar joins a strong spin squad led by captain Rashid Khan, alongside seasoned players Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Noor Ahmad.

The series also sees the return of opener Ibrahim Zadran, who last played T20Is in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Zadran was absent for Afghanistan’s last T20I series against Zimbabwe in December 2024. From that squad, left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote has been left out but is among the Asia Cup reserves.

The tri-series will start with a match between Afghanistan and Pakistan and follow a double round-robin format, where each team plays the others twice. The top two teams will compete in the final on September 7.

Should Afghanistan reach the final, they will have just one day of rest before starting their Asia Cup campaign against Hong Kong on September 9. The UAE’s first Asia Cup match is on September 10, while Pakistan begins their campaign on September 12.

Afghanistan squad for UAE tri-series: Rashid Khan (c), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Ibrahim Zadran, Darwish Rasooli, Sediqullah Atal, Azmatullah Omarzai, Karim Janat, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Mohammad Ishaq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, AM Ghazanfar, Noor Ahmad, Fareed Ahmad, Abdollah Ahmadzai and Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Afghanistan Name 17-Member Squad For Sharjah Tri-Series: Ibrahim Zadran, Mujeeb Return; Rashid Khan To Lead | Cricket News

The tournament offers the team critical match practice and a chance to gather insights on their Asia Cup opponents ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 Asia Cup, which begins in the UAE on September 9.

The 17-member squad largely mirrors Afghanistan’s Asia Cup roster, with Naveen-ul-Haq absent. In his place, 22-year-old pacer Abdollah Ahmadzai has been named. Ahmadzai, who has taken 14 wickets in 10 T20 matches, is yet to make his international debut and is among the reserves for the Asia Cup.

A key development for the tri-series is the potential T20I debut of mystery spinner AM Ghazanfar, who joins an already formidable spin unit consisting of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Noor Ahmad. With this combination, Afghanistan aims to leverage its spin strength on the Sharjah pitches.

The tri-series also marks the return of opener Ibrahim Zadran, who missed Afghanistan’s last T20I assignment in Zimbabwe in December 2024, while left-arm spinner Nangeyalia Kharote has been left out of the main squad but remains a reserve for the Asia Cup. Afghanistan will kick off the tri-series against Pakistan, followed by two encounters with the UAE in a double round-robin format. The top two teams will advance to the final on September 7, with a tight turnaround expected before Afghanistan’s Asia Cup opener against Hong Kong on September 9.

Alongside Rashid, Zadran, and Mujeeb, other key members of the squad include Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Darwish Rasooli, Sediqullah Atal, Azmatullah Omarzai, Karim Janat, Gulbadin Naib, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Mohammad Ishaq, Noor Ahmad, Fareed Ahmad, and Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Chelsea closing in on transfer for Man United’s Garnacho – sources

Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Alejandro Garnacho after stepping up talks with Manchester United over a £40 million ($54m) transfer for the Argentina forward, sources have told ESPN.

Garnacho, who has been told he can leave United this summer, has not featured in Ruben Amorim’s team since the end of last season and was omitted from the preseason tour to the United States in order to train with fellow unwanted teammates Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Antony.

    – Sources: Mainoo’s Utd future hanging in balance
    – Sources: United, Betis work to seal Antony deal
Sources: Chelsea weigh move for Barça’s Fermín

While Rashford completed a season-long loan move to Barcelona last month, United have been unable to offload any of their other outcasts and Garnacho rejected a move to Bayern Munich earlier this month after making it clear that he only wanted to leave Old Trafford for Chelsea.

The Stamford Bridge club had expressed an interest in signing Garnacho during the January transfer window, but a deal failed to materialise.

Chelsea had been keen to sign the 21-year-old earlier this summer, but sources have said that Enzo Maresca’s team were only prepared to pay £30 million ($40m) for Garnacho while United valued the player at £50 million ($67m).

Chelsea’s interest had stalled of late due to their attempts to advance outgoings in order to help comply with a UEFA sanction which has forced the club to balance books by offloading a number of players from last season’s Conference League-winning squad, most notably Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson.

Talks have now resumed between United and Chelsea over a deal worth between £35 million and £40 million, however, and while sources have said that no agreement has yet been reached, negotiations are progressing and that a transfer could be finalised before next Monday’s 7 p.m. BST transfer deadline.

Information from ESPN’s James Olley contributed to this report.

  • Olyslagers soars Oceanian record to clinch Diamond League crown on day one in Zurich | REPORTS

Olyslagers soars Oceanian record to clinch Diamond League crown on day one in Zurich | REPORTS

Australia’s two-time world indoor champion Nicola Olyslagers improved her own Oceanian record to 2.04m to win a thrilling high jump battle on the first day of the Wanda Diamond League Final in Zurich on Wednesday (27).

The record-breaking action took place on the Sechseläutenplatz as part of the two-day Weltklasse Zürich, where Diamond Trophies, prize money and wild card entries to the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 are up for grabs.

Ukraine’s world record-holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh had won the past three Diamond League women’s high jump titles and started as the world leader. While she still managed to match her previous world-leading mark, that 2.02m clearance wasn’t enough for the Olympic and world champion to clinch another crown this time and she settled for second place, while Great Britain’s Morgan Lake and Ukraine’s Yuliia Levchenko both cleared 2.00m – a national record for Lake, who placed third on countback.

Olyslagers entered the contest at 1.91m and cleared each height up to her winning mark on her first attempts. Mahuchikh needed two tries at 2.02m and after watching her rival soar clear at 2.04m, she decided to skip straight to 2.06m. Olyslagers was confirmed the champion when Mahuchikh’s three attempts were unsuccessful.

There was also a brilliant battle in the men’s pole vault and while Mondo Duplantis and Emmanouil Karalis may not have hit the heights they might have hoped for, they captivated the crowd with their rivalry up to attempting 6.10m.

Sweden’s Duplantis, who raised his world record to 6.29m in Budapest two weeks ago, opened his campaign at 5.50m and managed that, 5.80m, 5.90m and 6.00m on his first attempts. After clearing 5.65m and 5.90m first time, Olympic bronze medallist Karalis needed all three tries at 6.00m. He rattled the bar on his third attempt but it stayed up, keeping the contest alive.

Karalis was first to try 6.10m – a mark that would have added two centimetres to the Greek record he set at the start of the month – but he knocked off the bar, as did Duplantis, who clinched his fifth consecutive Diamond League crown when they both failed their next two tries. USA’s Sam Kendricks finished third on 5.80m.

Just two centimetres separated the top two in the men’s long jump and Simon Ehammer delighted the home crowd by soaring to the title.

The 2024 world indoor heptathlon champion regained the crown following his first Diamond League Final victory in 2023, leaping 8.32m in the third round. Italy’s world indoor champion Mattia Furlani responded with 8.30m in the fifth round but he was unable to go any farther with his final attempt. Australia’s Liam Adcock was just six centimetres behind that mark with 8.24m in the final round and finished third.

USA’s two-time world champion Joe Kovacs rebounded after missing out on a place for the World Championships in Tokyo by winning his fourth Diamond League title.

He led the contest with 22.10m from the second round and then improved to 22.46m from his fourth throw – just two centimetres off his season’s best – to beat his compatriot Payton Otterdahl, who threw 22.07m, and Jamaica’s Olympic bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell, who managed 21.87m.

Jessica Schilder secured her first Diamond Trophy, prevailing in a clash with Chase Jackson and Sarah Mitton.

Canada’s two-time world indoor champion Mitton was initially declared the winner, following a 20.67m throw – the third-best mark of her career – from the second round. But it was later judged to be a foul and Schilder moved up into top spot thanks to the 20.26m the Dutch 2022 world bronze medallist managed in the fourth round.

USA’s two-time world champion Jackson managed 20.08m from one of her two valid marks to place second, while Mitton was third with 19.99m in the final round.

USA’s Katie Moon kicked off the first day of finals by regaining a Diamond League title she first won in 2023. The two-time world champion cleared 4.82m on her first attempt and secured victory when her compatriot Sandi Morris was unable to make it over either 4.82m or 4.89m – Morris skipping straight to the higher bar after a single failure at 4.82m.

Moon also tried 4.89m once and then passed to 4.90m. Her competition came to an end when she knocked off the bar on both her attempts. It was a US top three, as Emily Grove equalled her PB to finish third on countback on 4.75m.

The competition continues on Thursday (28), when a further 26 Diamond League titles will be decided.
