‘I’m trying not to get ahead of myself’

Van Niekerk revealed he moved back to South Africa from the United States this year, and is not putting too much pressure on his outdoor season.

“Honestly, just a lot about health and finishing races,” he said when asked about his goals.

“So far I’ve been finishing every race. Step by step. Trying to improve and not get too far ahead of myself.”

And when asked about Saturday’s third-place finish, he added: “It was comfortable. It was more a mental battle than anything else, but I’m satisfied.”

  • Everything you need to know about the VNL Women’s Finals

Egonu, who was also the MVP of last year’s VNL, was the top Italian scorer in the Preliminary Phase with 171 points, good enough to place her in 10th place in the tournament’s table. Ranking sixth among the tournament’s top defenders with 120 digs, De Gennaro is another individual standout for the defending champions heading into the Finals.

The United States, which won three straight VNL titles in 2018, 2019 and 2021, were the last team to book their tickets to Łódź, ranking eighth in the Preliminary Phase with seven wins and five losses. The Americans are going through massive changes in 2025 as they not only have just three players who won silver at last year’s Paris Olympics – setter Jordyn Poulter, outside hitter Avery Skinner and middle blocker Dana Rettke – in their roster, but also have a new head coach in Erik Sullivan.

One of the new faces in the team, outside hitter Sarah Franklin was the top American scorer in the Preliminary Phase, with 135 points registered. Skinner only appeared in three matches in the VNL 2025 so far, but was in excellent form, producing 61 points in those encounters.

“There’s been a lot of ups and downs, which comes with the first year after the Olympics and the beginning of the quad,” Skinner said. “We have a lot of veterans who are not with the team now, but it’s been a good opportunity to get some younger girls to play. So, it was about learning and evolving each week, and I think we’ve done that. It’s important for us to be in the Finals, and our goal is to keep working on our team.”

Qatar confirms 2036 Olympic Games host city bid | Olympics News

Qatar signaled its interest as an Olympic Games host with established infrastructure from 2022 FIFA World Cup a key selling point.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) said it was taking part in “ongoing discussions” with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the election process for the host city of the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the organisation said in a media release on its website.

The country, which hosted football’s World Cup in 2022 and the Asian Cup in 2024, is the latest to join the race to stage the 2036 Games after confirmed bids from Indonesia, Turkiye, India and Chile.

Other Asian countries considering a bid include Saudi Arabia and South Korea. Egypt, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Denmark and Canada have also shown interest.

“We currently have 95% of the required sports infrastructure in place to host the Games, and we have a comprehensive national plan to ensure 100% readiness of all facilities,” Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, the president of QOC, told the state-run Qatar News Agency on Tuesday.

“This plan is rooted in a long-term vision aimed at building a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable legacy.”

Qatar’s capital Doha is set to host the Asian Games in 2030, having staged the event in 2006.

A successful bid would make Qatar the first country in the Middle East to host the Olympics amid the region’s growing influence over major sporting events. Saudi Arabia is set to hold the football World Cup in 2034.

  • Ravi Shastri claims Ashes is NOT Australia’s biggest rivalry and singles out one England star for turning India series in their favour

Ravi Shastri claims Ashes is NOT Australia’s biggest rivalry and singles out one England star for turning India series in their favour

Ravi Shastri reckons that despite its 143-year history, the Ashes is no longer Australia’s biggest cricket rivalry.

England v Australia stretches back to 1882-83, but world cricket’s oldest series has now been surpassed by India v Australia, Shastri told The Overlap and Betfair’s Stick to Cricket show, citing the record attendance of 373,691 at last winter’s Boxing Day Test in Melbourne as evidence.

‘I would say, in the years I played, the biggest rivalry is India v Pakistan. The interest it generates from the outside is massive,’ said the former India head coach.

‘Having said that, in the last 10 years, India v Australia has taken off. In cricketing terms, India v Australia has produced some series.

‘This year, you’ve got record crowds into the MCG for Boxing Day. The largest number of people that came in since Don Bradman’s team in 1936.

‘Now, I think that The Ashes will get a lot of people, but to upstage that you have to have a great series and probably the best crowd ever.’

Shastri insisted the Border-Gavaskar series against India is now the biggest for Australia

Shastri insisted the Border-Gavaskar series against India is now the biggest for Australia

That could be possible, with Cricket Australia reporting 50,000 ticket sales to English fans alone within the first 24 hours of general purchase last month.

It coincides with a feeling that this England side under Ben Stokes is the best equipped to win down under since the 3-1 victory in 2010-11.

Fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood should be fit, improving England’s firepower, and Shastri reckons they could also benefit from including Liam Dawson ahead of Shoaib Bashir.

A fractured finger for Somerset off-spinner Bashir, 21, has led to the recall of veteran Dawson this week, following an eight-year absence at Test level.

But Shastri, a former spinner himself, said: ‘You will need a spinner to do a controlling job, more than anything else. Someone who can keep it tight on a hot day, and hopefully give you some runs as well.

‘Australia will be hard (for Bashir). You might need a spinner to give you more with the bat. Dawson’s a good choice there.’

As for the here and now, Shastri has praised Ben Stokes’ influence in England opening up a 2-1 lead when, on the balance of play, the scoreline could be drastically different.

‘If India had seized their moments it could have been 3-0 but England have shown a lot of character, first at Leeds, then again on the final day at Lord’s, where the captain put his hands up, bowled those long spells, put his neck on the line and pulled it off. It is set up beautifully,’ the 63-year-old said.

‘If you saw the two captains, Shubman Gill was having an outstanding series and Stokes was getting there.

‘You could almost sense at Edgbaston, he was preserving himself, wanting enough in the tank to go to Lord’s at full pelt.’

The fourth Test of five begins in Manchester on Wednesday, although forecast rain could disrupt its start.

  • Head-to-head record before huge semi-final clash

Head-to-head record before huge semi-final clash

Germany vs Spain at EURO 2025: When was the last time these two met?

Wednesday’s semi-final is the second time these sides have met in a major tournament in under a year.

It was only last August, at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, that they locked horns in a bid for a place on the podium.

There proved very little to separate them, with Giulia Gwinn’s second-half penalty the difference in a 1-0 victory to secure a bronze medal.

As she has done so many times before, Berger was pivotal between the sticks for her nation. On this occasion, she stood tall to palm away Alexia Putellas’ penalty with seconds left on the clock to ensure the win.

In the history of the European Championships, their last and only meeting in the finals came in 2022, when the pair were drawn together in Group B.

Germany ran out victors once more, with goals from Klara Bühl and Alexandra Popp securing three points for the eventual finalists.

  • Five talking points as Lions beat First Nations & Pasifika XV

Five talking points as Lions beat First Nations & Pasifika XV

The British & Irish Lions maintained their perfect record in Australia with a scrappy 24-19 victory over First Nations & Pasifika XV at Marvel Stadium.

First Nations & Pasifika XV were excellent in bringing the Lions to the precipice of their first loss Down Under, in a game that will provide plenty of food for thought.

Here are the five things we learnt from a physical battle in Melbourne.

    CLASSY OWEN FARRELL

As if it ever needed reminding, Owen Farrell underlined why he has long been considered one of the best players in the world.

Farrell captained the Lions and delivered a brilliant display from inside centre, where he dovetailed nicely with fly-half Fin Smith.

He produced some really clever and delicate touches, including the kick that led to Jamie Osborne’s first try, and the pass that released Duhan van der Merwe in for the decisive score.

Rock-solid in defence, Farrell was quietly very impressive and will be knocking at the door for a Test spot this weekend.

    DARCY GRAHAM INJURY

Many believed Darcy Graham was unlucky not to be called into the initial squad when it was announced on May 8, before a call-up last week saw him realise his dream of becoming a Lion.

It’s heart-breaking then that injury meant he was substituted with 17 minutes gone, having scored a try with 11 played.

Graham is Scotland’s second all-time try scorer, and an incredibly popular member of the group, and it was notable that Finn Russell made the effort to come and console Graham as he sat looking on from the bench.

To extent of Graham’s injury will be learnt in the coming days but if he is ruled out of the rest of the Tour, Andy Farrell might need re-examine his depth chart.

    ATTACK STRUGGLES

For the most part, the Lions have been clinical with the ball throughout the Tour. Today, they looked slightly disjointed.

In the first half, the Lions scored only 2.0 points per visit to their opposition’s 22, compared to 4.7 for FNP.

It is understandable in part because of the number of new players who have been brought into the group as injury cover. The Lions could not make it click throughout the 80 minutes, and were dragged into a dogfight by the FNP.

    FNP AT THE BREAKDOWN

FNP targeted the Lions’ breakdown throughout the game, constantly attacking the ball when out of possession.

Charlie Gamble, who was a constant thorn in the Lions’ side when he represented the Waratahs earlier in the Tour, was excellent again at the ruck.

Stan Sport named the flanker Player of the Match, as his efforts at slowing the tourists’ ball down helped keep his side in the game when it could have gone away from them early in the second half.

It would not be a massive surprise if Gamble earned a call-up from Australia head coach Joe Schmidt, given the performances he’s put in over the Tour.

FNP dominated the Lions physically for large parts of the game, and it all started from their efforts in the breakdown, which gave them a chance to grab a late win.

    LIONS HOLD ON

Despite a scrappy performance from the Lions against a brilliant opposition, they managed to get over the line.

Ben White was effective again in challenging conditions for a scrum-half as FNP constantly tried to pilfer possession.

Jamie Osborne also showed his class, bagging a brace and defended well as the Lions kept their opposition at bay late on.

Being able to win when you’re not at your best is a skill in itself and, although the Lions would rather dominate, they’ll take a disjointed victory against an opposition who gave it their all.

Although the Tourists weren’t at their best in Melbourne, they have kept their perfect record in Australia alive for now.

Clean sport education at Canoe Slalom Worlds in Foix

ITA Education Ambassador Thais Cevada delivered an interactive clean sport presentation for the ICF Development Camp athletes and support personnel, followed by two engaging days at the clean sport education booth filled with games, activities and information.

Athletes learned how to check their medications using Global DRO, better understand supplement risks and even simulate a doping control process. The Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) game was especially popular among non-English-speaking participants, making complex topics more accessible and fun. Through scenario-based games, visitors also learnt how to report suspicious behaviours and got familiar with the REVEAL platform.

As one Italian coach said, “In-person education is so good for us – we refresh our knowledge and always understand something new about Clean Sport.” A Greek athlete added, “I wish every education were fun as this one. Is much better to learn how to keep safe in sport while having a good time.”
