  • China get the job done against Colombia and advance

Despite the defeat, Colombia had the match’s top scorer in outside hitter Ana Karina Olaya, who left the court with 21 points (19 kills, one block, one ace). Outside hitter Laura Pascua, with 14 points (12 kills, two aces), and opposite Dayana Segovia, with 12 (ten kills, two blocks), also had solid shifts.

“We feel better today because our first game wasn’t good,” setter María Alejandra Marín commented. “I think we have a really good team and that we could do better than we did against the Dominican Republic. We’re enjoying here and now we need to focus on our last match against Mexico. We have an opportunity to win that match and we want to do it.”

Colombia’s errors were too much for them to endure as the South Americans gave up 28 points to China’s 11. The Asians were better in kills (56 to 50) and blocks (12 to seven), while the South Americans had the most aces (three to two).

The clarification was issued after speculation intensified that Shan could be replaced by Saud as Test captain, while Rizwan’s position as ODI captain was also reported to be in jeopardy.

  • Everton sign Tyler Dibling from Saints as Bournemouth close on Chelsea’s Disasi | Transfer window

Everton sign Tyler Dibling from Saints as Bournemouth close on Chelsea’s Disasi | Transfer window

Everton have confirmed the signing of Tyler Dibling from Southampton in a deal worth up to £42m. It is thought the Merseyside club will pay an initial £35m for the forward, who has signed a four-year contract, and Saints have inserted a 20% sell-on fee.

Dibling impressed in the Premier League last season despite Southampton enduring a dismal campaign that ended in relegation. The England Under-21 winger joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 but returned to Southampton a month later after struggling to settle. “I think I’ve come to Everton at the perfect time and hopefully I can be here for many years,” Dibling said.

The 19-year-old forward considers Jack Grealish, another of David Moyes’s eight summer recruits, one of his inspirations. “I think the manager is perfect for me,” Dibling said. “He’s helped so many players before who were in my position. I’ve spoken to him and I know he’s going to be good for me. There are so many players here to learn from, real quality players like Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye.”

Dibling was tracked by several clubsincluding RB Leipzig, Tottenham and Aston Villa, after his breakthrough at Southampton, for whom he made his debut aged 17. He represented Saints’ under-21s at the age of 15 and sparked widespread attention after scoring a near-identical hat-trick against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Bournemouth are close to signing Axel Disasi from Chelsea. The 27-year-old is expected to join on loan and become the third defender brought in after the club made almost £145m from the sale of two centre-halves and a left-back.

Disasi’s starts at Chelsea last season came largely in the Conference League and League Cup before he joined Aston Villa on loan in the winter window. He is able to play at centre-back or right-back and has made 44 Premier League appearances since joining Chelsea from Monaco two years ago.

Bournemouth have sold Illia Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez to Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Liverpool respectively this summer, and brought in Bafodé Diakité and Adrien Truffert as replacements.

Chelsea have also agreed for Carney Chukwuemeka and Aarón Anselmino to join Borussia Dortmund as they continue their push to clear out fringe players. Chukwuemeka went on loan to Dortmund last February and the midfielder’s return is due to be on a permanent deal. Anselmino, a 20-year-old Argentinian defender, is poised to move on loan.

Leeds have signed the Leicester full-back James Justin in a deal worth about £10m. Justin, who has been capped once by England, joined Leicester from Luton in 2019.

Lakshya Sen loses to top seed Shi Yu Qi in opener

India’s Lakshya Sen bowed out of the BWF World Championships 2025 badminton tournament after a first-round defeat to world No.1 Shi Yu Qi in Paris on Monday.

Competing at the Adidas Arena, the same venue used for the Paris 2024 Olympics badminton events, world No. 21 Lakshya Sen fought hard but lost the contest 21-17, 21-19 in 54 minutes.

Lakshya, a bronze medallist at the 2021 edition in Huelva, produced a spirited fight in the opening game, trading blows with the top seed in a series of long rallies.

A 52-shot exchange underlined the intensity of the contest but Shi Yu Qi’s precision in attack made the difference as he claimed the opener after 26 minutes.

The second game followed a similar script with the Indian badminton player staying on Shi Yu Qi’s coattails in the early exchanges.

However, Shi Yu Qi upped the ante to bag two straight points from 19-all and sealed the contest. This was Sen’s fourth loss against Shi Yu Qi in five meetings.

The 24-year-old Lakshya Sen has endured a challenging 2025 BWF World Tour season, managing just one semi-final run at the Macau Open and an All England quarter-final.

The Paris 2024 semi-finalist has also suffered two second-round and six opening-round exits this season.

Former badminton world champion PV Sindhu will open her women’s singles campaign on Tuesday against Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova. World No.34 HS Prannoy, a bronze medallist in 2023, will also begin on the same day.

In doubles, top seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty received a bye into the second round and will start their campaign later in the week.

India has won at least one medal at every edition of the Badminton World Championships since 2011.

Gravesend man on cusp of completing running challenge for mum

Ellenor An image of Amol Randhawa, who is running the length of England in 13 days in honour of his mother who died. Amol is wearing a navy t-shirt and shorts, and can be seen running on a path in a park.Ellenor

Amol is due to finish his challenge on Wednesday, 13 days after setting off

A man who is running the length of England in memory of his late mother has spoken of the “emotional rollercoaster” he has faced during the challenge.

Amol Randhawa from Gravesend, in Kent, is aiming to run 554 miles (891 km) in 13 days and to raise £40,000 for the hospice which cared for his mother in her final days.

The 30-year-old – who is running about 43 miles (70km) each day – will finish in Lands End, Cornwall, on Wednesday, having started in Berwick-upon-Tweed, in Northumberland, on 15 August.

Mr Randhawa said it was a “mental challenge” as he had battled through injury, but the “hardest thing” was not being able to see his wife and daughter.

Mr Randhawa was just 10 when his mother died from cancer.

His run has already raised more than £18,000 for the Ellenor hospice in Gravesend.

“They do such an amazing job in the local community, so I just want them to continue being able to do that,” he said.

The Gravesend-based charity serves around 270,000 people in North Kent and Bexley, and cared for Mr Randhawa’s mother, 20 years ago, at what was then the Lions Hospice in Northfleet.

While there is no greater motivation, Mr Randhawa said it had been tough going.

“It’s just been an emotional rollercoaster… some days I have highs, then other times it’s just so low.”

He described the “mental challenge” of battling through injuries and being “five km into a day’s run with another 65 km to go, and your ankle is already sore, or your knees are already sore. It’s such a mental fight,” he said.

His friend, and physiotherapist, Rolandas Mizgeris, has accompanied him on the journey but he said a surprise visit from his wife and daughter a few days earlier than planned also gave him a boost.

“I think that’s been the hardest thing, not being able to see the two of them – especially when you have low points,” Mr Randhawa said.

He also said he had struggled with his mother’s loss more since becoming a father himself.

He said: “The thought of [my mother] watching us grow up, knowing that her remaining time with us was limited is devastating,” he said.

  • Film Study: New additions need to help Nuggets’ defense

Film Study: New additions need to help Nuggets’ defense

NBA TV analyzes Denver’s roster after it added Jonas Valančiūnas in a trade with Sacramento.

    • Download the NBA App
    • 2025 Free Agent Tracker
    • Every reported deal for all 30 teams

The Denver Nuggets have ranked no lower than seventh offensively over the last nine seasons, thanks largely to having a player (Nikola Jokić) who’s both the most efficient high-volume scorer in NBA history* and one of the best passers we’ve ever seen.

    * Among the 84 players who’ve averaged 20 points or more in at least 100 career games, Jokić has the highest true shooting percentage (63.8%).

Last season was actually the Nuggets’ best offensive season in that stretch, with Denver scoring 5.2 more points per 100 possessions than the league average. Jokić averaged a career-high 29.6 points and a career-high 10.2 assists, while also registering his second-best true shooting percentage (66.3%) in his 10 seasons in the league.

But the other end of the floor was an issue. Denver’s defense fell off, ranking 21st and allowing 1.4 more points per 100 possessions than the league average, its worst mark in the last seven years.

Nuggets’ record and efficiency, last five seasons

Season W L OffRtg Rank DefRtg Rank NetRtg Rank
    2020-21 47 25 116.3 6 111.5 11 +4.9 6
    2021-22 48 34 113.8 6 111.5 15 +2.3 11
    2022-23 53 29 116.8 5 113.5 15 +3.3 6
    2023-24 57 25 117.8 5 112.3 8 +5.3 4
    2024-25 50 32 118.9 4 115.1 21 +3.9 9

OffRtg = Points scored per 100 possessions
DefRtg = Points allowed per 100 possessions
NetRtg = Point differential per 100 possessions

You don’t want to be in the bottom 10. Over the last 22 years, only three teams have reached the Finals (and all three lost in the Finals) after ranking in the bottom 10 on either end of the floor.

    1. Career highs on offense, a step back on defense

Jokić has led the league in on-off differential in each of the last four seasons, with the Nuggets being an amazing 20 points per 100 possessions better with him on the floor than they’ve been with him off it during that span. But the defensive drop-off was mostly about the three-time Kia MVP’s minutes on the floor, in which the Nuggets allowed 4.5 more points per 100 possessions in 2024-25 than they did in ’23-24.

    Nuggets DefRtg, Jokić on/off floor

    Season On floor Off floor
    2023-24 110.6 112.8
    2024-25 115.1 113.4
    Diff. 4.5 0.6

One issue is that opponents shot 70% at the rim when Jokić was on the court, which is his worst rim protection mark in his career. That was a worse rim-protection mark than that of Karl-Anthony Towns last season.

He’s not the quickest nor the bounciest help defender, so if Jokić doesn’t have a good angle on an opposing driver, he’s not a great deterrent.

    2. Pick-and-roll defense ain’t what it used to be

The Nuggets had further issues when Jokić was at the point of attack. According to Second Spectrum tracking, Denver allowed 1.02 points per chance when he was the screener’s defender in a pick-and-roll last season. That mark ranked 68th among 78 players who defended at least 500 screens and was up from 0.93 points per chance (13th of 90) in 2023-24.

That’s a huge drop-off when it comes to defending the most important action in basketball. Jokić was the screener’s defender on 45.8 ball-screens per 100 possessions, the fourth-highest rate in the league. So how he defends the pick-and-roll, as well as how the Nuggets defend behind him, is critical to their success.

First, he has to be better at containing the ball …

    DeMar DeRozan drive vs. Denver

Jokić’s willingness to commit to stopping a drive depends partially on his trusting his teammates to rotate to his man. Since he prefers to be up at the level of the screen on pick-and-rolls (rather than in “drop” coverage), the Nuggets’ weak-side defenders have a more important job than they would on most other teams.

Protecting the paint against a rolling big man when your own center is out on the perimeter is not easy, and the Nuggets just weren’t as good at it last season as they were in the past …

    Myles Turner dunk vs. Denver

    Alperen Sengun dunk vs. Denver

According to Synergy tracking, the Nuggets ranked last in roll-man efficiency (1.20 points per possession) last season, their third straight year in the bottom five.

    3. Hoping for better help from new additions

The Nuggets have made some offseason changes, replacing Michael Porter Jr. and Russell Westbrook (second and fifth on the team, respectively, in total minutes last season) with Cam Johnson and Bruce Brown. They also acquired Jonas Valančiūnas to back up Jokić.

The Denver defense was at its worst (116.2 points allowed per 100 possessions) with Westbrook on the floor last season. Their starting lineup allowed 114.4 per 100 in its 426 minutes, but allowed just 105.6 per 100 in 123 minutes with the other four starters on the floor without Porter.

Brown and Johnson should be defensive upgrades. According to Second Spectrum, no player was the “tagger” on more screens last season than Porter. As Brown takes over that job, Johnson’s ability to help in the paint and recover out to his man will be worth watching …

    Cam Johnson block vs. Chicago

Brown will be on the ball more often, so his screen navigation will be critical regarding keeping the Nuggets out of rotation …

Bruce Brown screen navigation vs. the Lakers

Despite the defensive drop-off in the regular season, the Nuggets took the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games in the Western Conference semifinals. Though the Thunder could be even better this season, Jokić gives Denver a huge matchup advantage against every team in the league.

But the best player in the world can still be better, especially when it comes to defending the pick-and-roll. And if his teammates are better behind him, the Nuggets should finish higher in the Western Conference and be a tougher out in the postseason.

  • Vargas on fire as Türkiye sweep Bulgaria and qualify

The other match of the day in Nakhon Ratchasima had Canada overcoming Spain 3-2 (22-25, 28-26, 24-26, 25-15, 15-10) in a dramatic five-set battle. The results have shaped the pool scenario, as Turkish, with six points, and Canadians, with five, move to the next round, while Spain, with one, and Bulgaria, with zero, can no longer advance.

Despite being taken off at the start of the third set, star opposite Melissa Vargas was the match’s top scorer with 20 points (19 kills, one block) registered. A key player in their third-set comeback, outside hitter Ebrar Karakurt contributed another 13 (ten kills, two blocks, one ace).

“I didn’t start the match well, but I realized the team needed me in the third set,” Karakurt remarked. “We didn’t start the third set well, but I was able to reset mentally and help the team. It was good that we managed to come back and win 3-0. Qualifying was our goal, but we have one more match in the pool, and we want to win it and finish strong. The tournament will get tougher in the elimination rounds, and I hope we can keep showing great attitude and winning.”
