US Open 2025 results: Emma Raducanu beats Ena Shibahara to earn first New York win since 2021 title triumph

Having secured the first completed victory of this year’s tournament at 12:15 local time, Raducanu headed back to the practice courts at about 14:00.

New coach Francisco Roig, who agreed to join Raducanu’s team earlier this month, worked on her forehand returns from the baseline in a light-hearted session lasting about half an hour.

Roig has become a vocal presence in her courtside box – although there was little guidance or input needed against world number 130 Shibahara.

But, with the match taking place on a noisy Louis Armstrong Stadium, Raducanu said it would not have mattered even if the Spaniard was trying to deliver instructions.

“You don’t really hear it unless you’re kind of lip-reading,” she added.

“I probably don’t take in much of what he’s saying, but when I feel like I really need it, I will go over.

“For the most part, especially when you’re in a match like today, I felt like I had most things under control on my side of the court.”

Despite only working with each other for a few weeks, the pair appear to have already gelled.

Lengthy car journeys to the Cincinnati Open, with Roig taking driving duties, strengthened their bond, and he has since started teaching Raducanu some Spanish.

“If anyone asks if I can say something in Spanish, I just bosh out some verb conjugations,” she joked.

“It’s not exactly the best conversation starter but I’m getting there.”

Chiropractor Jerome Poupel, a Frenchman based in London, provides another voice in Raducanu’s new-look team – as well as a quirky back story.

Poupel has previously worked with ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard and racing legend AP McCoy, as well as treating horses.

“I don’t really know what he does with horses – I don’t ask questions! It just seems to work on them,” Raducanu said.

“I am a horse on my horoscope so I don’t know if that has any correlation.”

  • Porsche driver Ayhancan Güven in contention for DTM title after two victories

Porsche driver Ayhancan Güven in contention for DTM title after two victories

Changeable conditions with heavy rainfall at the start of the hour-long race made for a drying track and turbulent action at the Sachsenring on Saturday. Thomas Preining tackled the race on the undulating 3.671-kilometre track from eighth place on the grid, with Ayhancan Güven starting from ninth place. Both Manthey EMA drivers fought their way forward position by position in their 911 GT3 R, powered by 4.2-litre boxer rear engines producing up to 416 kW (565 PS). Once again, the duo benefited from perfectly timed pit stops and switched from rain tyres to slicks at a particularly favourable moment.

After a safety car deployment in the final stages of the race, Preining even moved up to first place, but came under pressure from Jordan Pepper at the start of the final lap. There was contact between the two title contenders, which Güven was quick to take advantage of: he exploited the gap that had opened up, moved up from third place to the front and drove home to victory. Preining finished fourth.

Ayhancan Güven rounds out the weekend with his fourth win of the season

On Sunday, Manthey EMA drivers Thomas Preining and Ayhancan Güven lined up in second and third place. They traded positions on the opening lap and held that order until the first pit stop window. A quicker tyre change saw Preining rejoin ahead of Jack Aitken in the lead, but cold tyres meant he had to let the Briton back through. On lap 20, while braking into Turn 1, contact occurred between the two. Aitken spun into the gravel, and Preining was dealt a penalty requiring three slow passes through the penalty zone. This dropped the Austrian well down the order, and he eventually finished the twelfth race of the season in eleventh place.

Once again, Güven was the beneficiary, taking the lead and holding it comfortably even after the second mandatory pit stop. His double victory at the Sachsenring lifts him to third in the drivers’ standings, just five points adrift of leader Lucas Auer. Preining sits in fifth place, a further ten points back.

‟We witnessed two spectacular races at the Sachsenring this weekend, both crowned by victories for Ayhancan Güven in the Porsche 911 GT3 R. On Saturday, a drying track clearly highlighted the drivers’ skills, and Sunday’s race also made for thrilling motorsport. The DTM is more exciting than ever,” summarises Sebastian Golz, Project Manager 911 GT3 R.

In the third Porsche 911 GT3 R, Morris Schuring initially crossed the line in eighth place on Saturday. Still, a five-second penalty for a collision relegated the young Dutchman from the Manthey Junior Team to 17th. The 20-year-old enjoyed a livelier outing on Sunday: after some hard-fought battles for position, he concluded race twelve of the season in eighth place.

    Comments after the race

    Ayhancan Güven (Manthey EMA, Porsche 911 GT3 R #90):
‟Two victories at the Sachsenring – simply unbelievable and definitely a highlight of my season! This track is one of my favourites. The strategy, the pit stops, and the superb Porsche just worked perfectly. I am so proud of the entire team. After a difficult race weekend at the Norisring and a rather average result at the Nürburgring, I was able to win races again and earn a heap of points. That also gives the team a real boost. The fantastic support from the many fans in the stands is incredible; they really support us wonderfully.”

Thomas Preining (Manthey EMA, Porsche 911 GT3 R #91): ‟It was an interesting weekend. I was in contention for victory in both races, but finishing fourth and eleventh wasn’t what I had in mind. On Saturday, I threw it away in tricky conditions with a mistake in the final corner, running just a few centimetres onto the wet. On Sunday, I was right behind the leading Ferrari after the first pit stop, but never got the chance to attack. When he made a small mistake in the third sector, I was close enough on the start-finish straight to try an overtaking move. He didn’t have to leave me space, as it was his corner – but it would have been better for both of us. Very bitter. I should have won twice. As a result, I didn’t score many points, which is frustrating. But nothing is lost yet. I’m still within striking distance of the championship leader; there are four races to go, and we won’t be carrying any extra weight into the Red Bull Ring.”

Morris Schuring (Manthey Junior Team, Porsche 911 GT3 R #92): ‟On Sunday, a podium finish was within reach for me – unfortunately, I had to drive through a penalty zone once. It’s a shame, but it was a good day nonetheless because I’m very pleased with my progress. I think a podium finish isn’t far off.”

  • Kiplimo in a class of his own in Buenos Aires | REPORTS

Kiplimo in a class of his own in Buenos Aires | REPORTS

Uganda’s world half marathon record-holder Jacob Kiplimo was a convincing winner of the 21K de Buenos Aires – a World Athletics Label road race – in the Argentinean capital on Sunday (24).

The two-time world cross-country champion clocked a course record of 58:29 while Kenya’s Veronica Loleo won the women’s race in 1:06:58.

Held in windy conditions and in temperatures of about 8C, the men’s field set out at 2:44/km pace. The first 5km was covered in 13:42 with Kiplimo and Kenya’s Emmanuel Wafula following the pacemaker. About 19 minutes into the race, Kiplimo and Walufa overtook the pacemaker, but the Kenyan was only able to latch on to Kiplimo for just a couple more kilometres.

Having built up a clear lead at 9km, Kiplimo went through 10km in 27:25, nine seconds ahead of Wafula. Pacemaker Bereket Nega Batebo clocked 27:59 at 10km, leading Kenyan trio Vincent Nyamongo Nyageo, Isaac Kipkemoi and Solomon Kirwa plus Ethiopia’s Seifu Tura (28:14).

Kiplimo maintained his relentless pace and covered the third km section in 13:38, reaching 15km in 41:03, at which point the 2021 Olympic bronze medallist had a 55-second lead over Wafula.

Despite the challenging wind in the closing stages, Kiplimo still managed to take 36 seconds off the course record, winning in 58:29. A fading Wafula was reeled in by his pursuers with little more than a kilometre to go. Tura prevailed in a sprint finish over Nyamongo, both athletes finishing inside 60 minutes.

Kiplimo, who holds three of the five fastest ever times for the distance topped by his monster WR of 56:42 set last February in Barcelona commented:

“I felt great throughout, but the wind affected me,” said Kiplimo, who set his world record of 56:42 earlier this year. “My main target for today was to simply enjoy the experience, and I did that. As a fan of Lionel Messi, I was eager to come to Buenos Aires.

“My build-up for the Chicago Marathon is going very well,” he added. “I have heard there will be a world record pace there; I plan to run more conservatively but I would like to be close to the world record in the end.”

In the women’s race, world half marathon bronze medallist Catherine Amanangole, fellow Kenyan Veronica Loleo and Ethiopia’s Ftaw Zeray went through the opening 5km in a swift 15:17 but the pace dropped leading up to 10km, reached in 31:18.

As was the case in the men’s race, the pace dropped further in the closing stages, ruling out an attack on the course record, but Loleo held on to win in 1:06:58 ahead of Zeray (1:07:07) and Amanangole.

See Eze’s reaction to a video message from Henry! | Video | News

After completing his move to us, Eberechi Eze received a very special message from our all-time leading goalscorer, Thierry Henry – a player the England winger used to watch from the Emirates Stadium stands.

The French legend was chatting to another of our iconic players in Ian Wright, and upon hearing that Wrighty was due to meet Ebere following his signing, Thierry wanted him to pass on a personal message for our new No. 10, welcoming him to the club.

“First and foremost, welcome to the Arsenal,” Thierry told Ebere. “You don’t understand how happy we all are.

“We all know how much you wanted to play for The Arsenal, and wear the cannon at the Emirates. There you go – it’s not a dream anymore, it’s not a utopia. That has become reality.

Make sure that you make it count.

“Remember, when I first arrived at the Arsenal, they told me that it is a club that has class, it’s a family club, and you got to fight no matter what. All the very best, I’m so happy. Come on The Arsenal!

After viewing the footage, Ebere was taken aback. “He’s got a statue outside, bro. You know what? When you use words, you can ruin something.

“I’m telling you, this for me, it’s the feeling. I can try and explain it, but it’s the feeling, man. This is powerful.”

Eze on using his Emirates seat to fuel his dream | Video | News

When he walked out at Emirates Stadium for the first time as a Gunner ahead of our game against Leeds United, Ebere Eze could be forgiven for taking a lingering look at a certain spot of our home.

Despite achieving plenty in the game already in his career, the England winger and boyhood Gooner has always held a strong desire to play for the team he and his family supported growing up, and emulate the players that he idolised from the stands.

He played four times on our turf during his time with Crystal Palace, and scored on his last visit back in April when the sides played out a 2-2 draw. However, he confessed that on all those occasions, he was aiming to catch the eye of our decision makers, and fulfil a dream come true.

“I thought about coming back from the moment I understood other clubs and what it meant to become a pro,” he revealed to Ian Wright after signing for us. “I’ve always thought: ‘Arsenal is where it’s at, that’s what I want to achieve, what I want to get to.’

“I’ve been on trial for four years, if I’m being honest. Every time I came to Arsenal, I looked at the seat that I used to sit on when I used to come to games with my brothers, and I’ve said every single time: ‘this is it – it’s time, this is an opportunity.’ I’m not going to say I knew it was going to happen, but that’s the feeling.

“As a player, I have a level of belief in myself. I’ve been playing how I’ve been playing, I’ve been developing this and that, and I had the heart that if it’s meant to be, it will happen, and I believe it will. But if it doesn’t, I’m at peace because I know I’m giving everything. So for it to happen now and to be in this position, there is a bit more energy inside the tank.

Ebere also revealed to Wrighty about his conversations with Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta, and is encouraged that they will help him take his game to the next level as he aims to keep his career moving on the same upward trajectory.

He admits that playing alongside Three Lions teammates Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Myles Lewis-Skelly will help him bed into the squad quickly, but also help him achieve his aim of improving by playing with world-class players week in, week out.

On his early encounter with Mikel, he said: “I can see his energy, I can see the level of passion that he has. That’s everything I need, I know that, I can see that. Andrea Berta as well, I know they’re going to make me better.

“There were talks about position, but as long as I’m on the pitch and given the opportunity to play and express myself in that environment, then it doesn’t matter where I’m playing. Of course, he has ideas and things that he wants, but for me, I’m free.

“It definitely makes it easier to settle into an environment if you know you’ve got guys that will be honest with you, will help you and put an arm around you when you need it. So, for me, it’s the perfect environment and a step on from where I’ve been.

“I’m only going to get better, I’m only going to improve, I’m only going to work harder, so, for me, it feels like the perfect environment to do everything that I’ve dreamed of.”

2025 has certainly been an incredible year for Ebere. In March, he scored his first England goal at Wembley, April saw him net there during Palace’s FA Cup semi-final win against Aston Villa and May saw him immortalise himself in the club’s history by bagging the only goal of the final as they beat Manchester City to clinch their first ever major honour.

Only a few weeks ago he helped the Eagles add the Community Shield to their honours board. Having lifted silverware in recent months, he is desperate to keep adding to his medal haul in north London, and make the same supporters he used to sit in the stands with experience the same joy that he’s had recently.

“I just want to win, I want to win whatever’s there,” he smiled. “I feel like I’ve got a taste for it now, and to contribute, to give whatever I can to help the team win. I’m on it. That’s my mentality.

“I’ve seen what it means, I’ve seen what you can do, not just to your teammates and the staff but I can see what you can do to people when you win, when you bring that type of joy to the place. So to be part of that, that’s my aim.”

  • South Africa 66-6 Brazil: Debutants defeated in Women’s Rugby World Cup

South Africa 66-6 Brazil: Debutants defeated in Women’s Rugby World Cup

“We are here to show Brazil have more than just soccer.”

Fly-half Raquel Kochhann may not have achieved her initial dream of playing football for her country, but she did get the chance to show her kicking skills on the world stage.

Brazil were 12-0 down to South Africa on their Women’s Rugby World Cup debut when a penalty was awarded.

From just outside the 22, and at a slight angle, it was that awkward kick that you should get, but it was far from a gimme.

It was never in doubt and Kochhann’s historic strike sailed through with ease, as did a penalty in the second half.

Those were the only scores registered by Brazil as they fell to a heavy opening 66-6 defeat, but afterwards the players stressed the significance of becoming the first South American team to make the Women’s World Cup.

“We are so excited to be here to show the world Brazilian rugby,” said Kochhann.

“I am really sure we are inspiring young girls and players in Brazil to see a future by seeing us play at the highest level possible.”

Brazil’s World Cup debut was much anticipated because of their sevens flair, but it was their toughness and bravery in defence that stood out.

A large portion of the squad come from tough favelas, and have had to fight harder than most to reach the global stage.

Kochhann, who won her seventh XVs cap in Northampton, is a sevens specialist and has been to three Olympic Games, overcoming breast cancer to feature in Paris last year.

The lowest-ranked team at the tournament in 25th, Brazil had only played 16 Tests of XV-a-side rugby prior to the tournament. They only celebrated their first win in 2023 over Portugal.

Even when the Brazil national anthem ended in Northampton, the players continued to sing full of emotion.

“We screamed to everyone that we are warriors and are ready,” Kochhann added.

“It is really important that we had a load of Brazilians here and those supporting us in Brazil. This energy is important to show people are looking out and caring about us.

“It shows rugby matters, I love this energy. I am super excited to see how our team grows.

Bianca Silva’s excellent early try-saving tackle on Ayanda Malinga typified that warrior mindset – one of 168 tackles her team made in the game.

Springbok number eight Aseza Hele bagged a hat-trick and was one player Brazil could simply not stop because of her brutal power.

But excellent scramble defence meant South Africa only scored their fourth try right on half-time, before they accelerated clear in the second half.

C Palace 1-1 Nottm Forest (Aug 24, 2025) Game Analysis

Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest held each other to a 1-1 draw in a game that was billed as the “battle of the boardrooms” after the controversy over their European football status this season.

Ismaïla Sarr opened the scoring for Palace in the first half, but Callum Hudson-Odoi levelled in the secind period.

The game was staged in the backfrop of off-field drama. Forest replaced Palace in the Europa League after the latter were deemed to have breached UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules.

There was also drama surrounding the Forest dugout, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo reportedly having fallen out of favour with owner Evangelos Marinakis.

When asked before the game if his comments that the pair are “not as close” could be perceived as him trying to engineer a departure from the club, Nuno told Sky Sports: “That is nonsense. That does not make any kind of sense.

“The state is that we are focused on the game, that is more important. We have to make sure the players are ready to play, because this game is going to be very tough.”

Asked if he wanted to continue in his role, the Forest boss added: “Of course. Of course.”
