Trump says he’ll be at Ryder Cup and he thinks captain Keegan Bradley should play

ATLANTA — President Donald Trump says he will be at the opening round of the high-charged Ryder Cup next month in New York, and he thinks U.S. captain Keegan Bradley should be playing.

Trump posted on his social media site Saturday night he would be there on Friday, Sept. 26, for the start of three-day matches between the United States and Europe. He said he was invited by the PGA Tour, which does not run the event.

A PGA of America spokesperson did not immediately return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Already the most raucous event in golf, this Ryder Cup has more anticipation than usual because of the venue — the Black course at Bethpage State Park on New York’s Long Island, a public course with a reputation for having the rowdiest fans.

Given his passion for golf, it was expected Trump would make a presence at some point during the Ryder Cup. He met with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Tiger Woods earlier this year to try without success to solve the divide created by the breakaway, Saudi-funded LIV Golf. The PGA Tour announced this week it would return to Trump National Doral in Florida next year for the first time in nearly a decade.

The added wrinkle to this Ryder Cup is Bradley, who is debating whether to become the first captain to play in the matches since Arnold Palmer in 1963.

Bradley, 39, is the youngest American captain since Palmer was 34. Whether he should play and maintain captain duties has been the subject of much debate, and Bradley has added to the intrigue by winning twice in the last year.

He shot 63 on Saturday — a few hours before Trump’s post on Truth Social — to get into fourth place with a chance to win the season-ending FedEx Cup.

“Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team — As Captain!!! He is an AMAZING guy. It will be a great Ryder Cup,” Trump wrote.

Trump, who attended the Super Bowl in February and most recently the final of the FIFA Club World Cup in New Jersey, is friendly with several prominent golfers. Bryson DeChambeau, who qualified for the U.S. team, has played golf with Trump and was the only golfer Trump appointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition.

Bradley’s decision on whether to play will come Wednesday when he announces his six captain’s picks.

  • Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti extends lead in the overall standings

Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti extends lead in the overall standings

Race 12, Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland, Round 6, Sachsenring (DEU).

The closing stages of the twelfth race of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland season proved turbulent: Just a few hundred metres from the finish, Robert de Haan looked certain of victory. But on the penultimate lap, the Dutchman, who had started from pole, was struck by a puncture. Although he managed to keep his Proton Huber Competition Porsche 911 GT3 Cup under control with a split-second reaction, he had to crawl to the finish line at reduced speed. De Haan was ultimately classified 23rd.

‟I really didn’t expect that,” admitted Alessandro Ghiretti. After an unsuccessful overtaking attempt right after the start, the Porsche Junior had to settle for second place. ‟My plan was to attack Robert in the final two laps, but of course I don’t know if it would have worked,” said the Frenchman. This marked the second one-two victory within 24 hours for the French Schumacher CLRT team. Flynt Schuring, winner of Saturday’s race, finished second this time behind teammate Ghiretti. ‟I was able to get past Kas Haverkort right off the line. After that, it was a quiet race for me,” said the 19-year-old Dutchman from the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Talent Pool.

Huub van Eijndhoven also overtook his compatriot Haverkort in the opening stages, and the GP Elite teammates went on to cross the line in that order. ‟I struggled with understeering, so it was hard work to keep Kas behind me,” said the Dutchman. With two third-place finishes this weekend, the 25-year-old has moved up to third in the overall standings. Porsche Junior Ghiretti, meanwhile, extended his lead over de Haan to 34 points.

The ProAm and Rookie classifications also saw a major shake-up in the closing stages of the 23-lap race. Sören Spreng (GP Elite) led the ProAm category for much of the distance, but after damaging the front spoiler of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, the German had no choice but to give way to his rivals. In the end, it was once again Michael Schrey who prevailed. The Osnabrück native celebrated his seventh ProAm victory of the season. ‟I think I managed my tyres better than some of my colleagues, which allowed me to make a few overtaking moves in the final laps,” reflected the Team Bonk Motorsport driver. Michael Essmann (Team75 Bernhard) and Ahmad Alshehab of Team [a-workx] by Porsche Paderborn completed the ProAm podium.

Among the Rookies, Sacha Norden initially looked set for a certain victory. However, a trip into the gravel trap shortly before the finish cost the Dutchman the lead in the class. Instead, his Proton Huber Competition teammate Joseph Warhurst claimed the top step of the Rookie podium for the second time this weekend. ‟That was important, now I’m back in the title fight,” said the Briton with a smile. He now sits just one point behind championship leader Norden, who finished second. Third place among the Rookies went to Brazilian Matheus Ferreira (Target).

‟Congratulations to Schumacher CLRT: As a newcomer to the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland, the team delivered a perfect performance at its maiden Sachsenring appearance with two double victories. Big praise also goes to Flynt Schuring, a driver from our Talent Pool: one victory and one second place – that’s really impressive,” commented Thorsten Rückert, Project Manager of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland.

Semi-finals in three weeks in Styria

The teams contesting the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland will travel from Saxony to Austria: From 12 to 14 September 2025, the Red Bull Ring near Spielberg will host the seventh and penultimate round of the one-make cup featuring the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

  • USA beat Argentina and make it to the Round of 16

The day started in Nakhon Ratchasima with a five-set battle, which saw Czechia come from behind to beat Slovenia 3-2 (22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-13) and claim their first victory in the tournament. With two rounds completed, the Americans have six points and are guaranteed in the Round of 16. Argentina, with three, Czechia, with two, and Slovenia, with one, fight for the other spot in the elimination rounds.

Olympic medalist middle blockers Dana Rettke and Chiaka Ogbogu led the way for the Americans, with the former tallying 15 points (11 kills, three blocks, one ace) and the latter registering 14 (eight kills, five blocks, one ace). Outside hitters Sarah Franklin and Avery Skinner were also pivotal, with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

“It feels awesome to have qualified, we’re super excited,” Franklin reacted. “The second set didn’t go as we expected, but we as a team just wanted to do better in the things that didn’t go well, and I thought we did a great job with it in sets three and four.”

  • Lee Zii Jia “not aiming at targets” in return to court after major injury

Lee Zii Jia “not aiming at targets” in return to court after major injury

Lee Zii Jia says he considered skipping season

Such was the extent of his injury, Lee mentioned that he was mentally stressed and thinks he may have suffered a little bit of depression.

“Actually, I [did] think of [it],” he says when Olympics.com asks if he considered sitting out the entire season, like some athletes do in other sports to rest, reset, and come back from injury.

But, it being the first time in his career that the 27-year-old has faced such a challenge, he decided against it. “The main thing is I managed to play injury-free (in training),” he explains. “So that’s why I came out to play this tournament.”

France has not always been Lee’s happy place. Except for his bronze medal here last summer at the Olympic Games, Lee has generally struggled in French tournaments.

“I think it’s either always first round or second round,” Lee says of his early exits in previous competitions. “I really have a tough one every time in France, except for the Olympics. That was the best result I got.”

So, with no expectations or targets coming into this tournament, what else can Lee take from this experience?

At the very least, a chance to assess how he stacks up against the field — and figure out what he can take going forward for the rest of the season. “I think I’m at the middle point of how to deal with all this,” he says.

And even though he has no expectations, surprises could lie in store.

“Men’s singles has become more competitive,” the Malaysian says. “It’s not like the generation of Lin Dan and [Lee] Chong Wei when they won almost all the big tournaments.

“For me, everyone has the chance to win any tournament if they are 100 per cent ready.”

Know East Bengal schedule and where to watch live streaming

Kolkata football giants East Bengal FC will be in action in the AFC Women’s Champions League 2025 preliminary stage, starting from Monday.

The Moshal Girls qualified for the continental competition by winning the 2024-25 Indian Women’s League and the AWCL campaign marks their maiden outing in any AFC football competition.

East Bengal have been drawn in Group E alongside hosts Phnom Penh Crown FC and Hong Kong China’s Kitchee SC in the preliminary stage.

The preliminary phase of the 2025-26 AFC Women’s Champions League features 19 teams, split into five groups – four pools of four teams each and one of three.

After single round-robin matches, the five group winners and the best-ranked runners-up across pools will progress to the group stage, joining six automatic qualifiers from the highest-ranked AFC member associations.

Already assured of main draw spots are Melbourne City FC (Australia), Suwon FC Women (Republic of Korea), Tokyo Verdy Beleza (Japan), defending champions Wuhan Jiangda Women’s FC (People’s Republic of China), Ho Chi Minh City Women’s FC (Vietnam) and Bam Khatoon FC (Islamic Republic of Iran).

Each group in the preliminary stage will be hosted at a centralised venue. East Bengal’s Group E will be conducted at the National Sports Complex of Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

East Bengal will play both their preliminary matches in Phnom Penh, starting against Phnom Penh Crown FC on August 25 before meeting Kitchee SC on August 31.

Should East Bengal qualify for the AWCL 2025-26 group stage, they will enter a separate draw scheduled in Kuala Lumpur on September 11.

  • Nuno Espirito Santo: Nottingham Forest boss says quit talk ‘absurd’ – but he may still leave

Nuno Espirito Santo: Nottingham Forest boss says quit talk ‘absurd’ – but he may still leave

While the Forest hierarchy may be divided, the fans showed at Selhurst Park they remain behind the manager.

Nuno took to the pitch at full-time and clapped and gave a thumbs-up to fans, who responded with chants of ‘Nuno, Nuno, Nuno’.

Then he turned and walked away – and it remains to be seen whether it will be for the final time.

Before the game, Forest fans told the BBC of their concern for the future of the manager who had taken them to their highest Premier League position since the mid-1990s when they finished seventh last season.

Fans Lynne and Lisa, speaking to the BBC’s Aaron Paul as they waited for the away players to arrive at Selhurst Park, remain hopeful Nuno will stay.

“It came out the blue on Friday, hopefully it will all get resolved,” they said.

The do not blame Marinakis, though, as they added: “We like his passion. He’s spending a lot of money, we can’t ask for more.”

The Forest performance at Palace perhaps indicated an uncertainty among the players, lacking the verve and fluency seen in their 3-1 opening-game win over Brentford.

Forest did not have a shot on target until the 57th minute, when Hudson-Odoi’s shot beat Palace keeper Dean Henderson at the near post.

Sympathy for Nuno had been in short supply from the home crowd before that equaliser.

“You’re getting sacked in the morning,” mocked some Eagles fans.

But, referring to Palace’s demotion from the Europa League to the Uefa Conference League for breaching multi-ownership rules, Forest fans responded with, “Europa League, you’re having a laugh”.

Forest, who took that Europa League spot on their league placing, finished much the stronger side and almost snatched victory in added time.

Striker Igor Jesus struck the post, while Hutchinson lifted a shot over the bar after an impressive late cameo.

It meant Forest missed the chance of successive wins to start a top-flight season for the first time since 1987-88 under Brian Clough, but stretched their unbeaten Premier League run against Palace to 11 games.
