  • Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard injuries give Mikel Arteta cause for concern

Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard injuries give Mikel Arteta cause for concern

Mikel Arteta fears Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard are both braced for a period on the sidelines after they sustained injuries in Arsenal’s thumping 5-0 win over Leeds at the Emirates.

Viktor Gyokeres bagged a brace on his home debut for Arsenal, while Jurrien Timber also scored twice after new signing Eberechi Eze was unveiled in the moments before kick-off at a euphoric Emirates.

But Saka, who himself hit the target in first-half stoppage time, was replaced in the 53rd minute with a hamstring injury.

The England international was ruled out for three-and-half months last season after he was forced to have surgery on his right hamstring.

Saka pulled up before going down and clutching his left hamstring when the second half was just six minutes old. He hobbled off before he exchanged a guarded message with Arteta behind the veil of his left hand.

Odegaard fell awkwardly on his right shoulder early on and never fully recovered. Kai Havertz is also facing a spell out with a knee injury – the extent of how long the Germany international will be sidelined for remains unclear at this stage.

And Arteta said: “Those are the negatives of the day. Martin felt something in his shoulder when he landed. We don’t know. We’ll have to scan him tomorrow and understand a bit better.

“And Bukayo, while he was running with the ball, carrying the ball, wrestling with the defender, he felt something in his hamstring while he was sprinting. That’s never a good sign.

“We’ll have to wait and speak to the doctors. But he’s had these injuries before. And he knows exactly the feeling of that.

“We are two weeks in and we have already lost Kai, Martin and Bukayo. So it tells you how well-equipped you have to be in this league to manage and to maintain the level that we want.”

As well as Eze, Arteta could have a ready-made replacement in teenager Max Dowman who became the club’s second youngest player to represent Arsenal with a fine second-half cameo.

Dowman, aged 15 years and 234 days, earned his side a penalty in stoppage time which Gyokeres duly converted, and Arteta added: “This is what we see every single day in training.

“There is a kid here that has zero hesitation. He’s so convinced that he can go in at 15 and deliver that, which I’ve never witnessed in my life. And for us, it brings joy, it brings emotion and something else that makes our jobs so great.”

Newly-promoted Leeds were brought back down to earth following their 1-0 win against Everton at Elland Road on Monday.

Manager Daniel Farke said: “It is fair to say Arsenal deserved to win. I am not sure it was a 5-0 because they had five shots on target.

“But long story short, when a team like Arsenal is on it, and a team – which has probably been the best in Europe for the past few years in terms of consistency – then it is always difficult for a newly-promoted side. We have to accept they were better today.”

Afghanistan unveil Rashid-led 17-strong squad for Asia Cup

Kabul: Afghanistan have announced their Asia Cup squad, mixed with seasoned campaigners and emerging players, all set to be led by their star player Rashid Khan.

Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman and Allah Ghazanfar, who both missed the Champions Trophy earlier this year, have returned to the national setup to form a formidable spin-bowling attack along with Noor Ahmed, Mohammad Nabi and the skipper Rashid.

Ibrahim Zadran, who made his comeback earlier this year in the Champions Trophy, has returned to the mix, with Hazratullah Zazai making way.

The pace attack will be led by left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Faroogi, with Naveen-ul-Haq and Farid Ahmad Malik also forming part of the mix.

The squad also contains three travelling reserves in the form of Wafiullah Tarakhail, Nangyal Kharote, and Abdullah Ahmadzai.

Afghanistan are placed alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka in Group B, while India, Oman, Pakistan and the UAE are in Group A.

Afghanistan’s campaign begins against Hong Kong in the opening match of the tournament, in Abu Dhabi on September 9.

Afghanistan have not played any T20I in 2025. They have played just three T20ls in the last 12 months, against Zimbabwe in Harare in December 2024, in a series they won 2-1.

Prior to the Asia Cup, Afghanistan will also face the hosts UAE and Pakistan in a T20I Tri-Nation Series, starting this Friday in Sharjah, which will feature most of the 22-member preliminary squad, previously announced by the ACB.

  • PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi makes bold claim on India vs Pakistan cricketing ties ahead of Asia Cup 2025; ‘No more begging…’

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi makes bold claim on India vs Pakistan cricketing ties ahead of Asia Cup 2025; ‘No more begging…’

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi has ignited the India vs Pakistan debate ahead of Asia Cup 2025 with a “no more begging” remark. Pakistan are scheduled to play India on September 14 in the continental showpiece in Dubai followed by another clash in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 in Colombo in October.

The cricketing ties of India and Pakistan have been in turmoil for the last decade due to the political indifferences between the two countries with no bilateral series since 2012. Things got worse following the Pahalgam terror attack, to which India retaliated with Operation Sindoor.

In fact, both the cricketing boards signed an agreement earlier this year to play at neutral venues till 2027 in International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asia Cricket Council (ACC) events.

Naqvi’s comments on future cricketing negotiations with their neighbours came in after Indian ministry’s reaffirmation of playing Pakistan only in multi-nation tournaments. “I think we are very clear that whenever talks are held, it will be on an equal footing with India, and there will be no more begging for negotiations,” Naqvi told reporters in Lahore.

“That time has passed, and whatever will happen will be on the basis of equality,” added Naqvi.

India vs Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025

Meanwhile, this will be the first time India will playing Pakistan in a cricket match post Operation Sindoor. Earlier, India were scheduled to play Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) twice but the Men in Blue pulled out in protest.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led side could possibly face Pakistan in two more games at the Asia Cup 2025 – the Super Four stage and potentially in the summit clash on September 28. Both India and Pakistan have announced their squads for the Asia Cup 2025. For the unknown, Pakistan have dropped star duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

Australia wins toss, elects to bat in final ODI against South Africa

MACKAY, Australia (AP) — Australia captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and elected to bat against high-flying South Africa in the third and final one-day cricket international on Sunday.

South Africa has already sealed its fifth successive bilateral ODI series win against Australia with two big victories at Cairns and Mackay, beating the home team by 84 runs and 98 runs respectively.

Temba Bavuma was back to lead the Proteas after missing the game on Friday due to workload management. Matthew Breetzke, who became the first men’s players to hit four successive scores of 50-plus in his first four ODIs, was left out of the top-order and made way for Bavuma.

South Africa also rested player of the second match Lungi Ngidi, who took a five-wicket haul, and Nandre Burger as Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka replaced the duo in the playing XI.

The home team, looking to avoid a whitewash, didn’t tinker with its struggling top-order batting line-up, but included Sean Abbott and Cooper Connolly in place of rested Josh Hazlewood and Aaron Hardie.
