  • Roebuck excited to be back in the WSL

Under the leadership of Natalia Arroyo, Aston Villa Women is a project that Ellie Roebuck could not turn down. The goalkeeper is the club’s newest recruit putting pen-to-paper on a two-year deal following her departure from FC Barcelona. Speaking with VillaTV on her first day at Bodymoor Heath, Roebuck said: “I’m really excited, it’s a project that I’m looking forward to being involved with. “Ready to get going now, just keep moving forward, meet the girls and hit the ground running. “I looked at the way they finished the season last year and it was really positive, exciting and hopefully we can look to build on that again this year.” After a season playing in Liga F in Spain, the 25-year-old is looking forward to returning to Women’s Super League football. “It’s an unbelievable league, super competitive and I’ve been watching from afar so it will be nice to get back, be involved and hopefully help this club move forward,” she shared. Roebuck is up for the fight of competing for that starting goalkeeper spot as she reveals her personal aspirations for the upcoming campaign. She said: “As a goalkeeper it’s always difficult as there’s one place and everyone’s fighting for that. “But I’m excited to work with the other goalkeepers and hopefully we can all help push and challenge each other. “Of course, I have my own individual aspirations, I want to be playing football, and I want to contribute on the pitch to help the team. “So, from that point of view I’m looking forward to working hard and showing what I can do.” Roebuck is also looking forward to building a strong bond with the goalkeeper union as she believes they can push each other to their best. “I’ve been pretty lucky as I’ve always had good goalkeeper unions and good relationships with goalkeepers I have worked with and I’m sure that will be no different here,” she shared. “But it’s about challenging each other, pushing each other and that will only benefit the team in the long run.” This move will reunite Roebuck with past and present England teammates, and she reveals the conversations she had with them ahead of signing. The keeper said: “I spoke to Rach (Daly) and I spoke to Missy (Kearns) and both of them have really high praise. “So, it’s a project I am looking forward to getting onboard with, it’s nice to have some familiar faces as well to help me integrate within the group.” After a year plying her trade with Spanish giants Barcelona, Roebuck is keen to bring that experience to Villa. “I loved my year in Spain, I think it helped develop me both on the pitch and off the pitch as a person. “I played with some unbelievable players, but I like to think now that I can use that experience and bring that to not only help me but to help the team. “I’ve spoken with the coach (Natalia Arroyo) and I got really positive vibes from that so I’m excited to start working with her,” she added. “I think we both share playing styles and hopefully I can help contribute to that.” Gracing Villa Park as a Villan is also a thought that excites the new addition. Roebuck said: “It’s an amazing, traditional, English football stadium with all the heritage and history so I’m super excited. “It’s always been a good atmosphere when I’ve played there before and when I’ve come to watch the men’s games.”

  • Nike and Sabrina Ionescu Innovate for All Hoopers With the Sabrina 3 Signature Collection — NIKE, Inc.

Nike and Sabrina Ionescu Innovate for All Hoopers With the Sabrina 3 Signature Collection — NIKE, Inc.

Nike is introducing the Sabrina 3, the new go-to sneaker for hoopers around the world who are constantly sharpening their skills to master every facet of the game.

Lightweight, responsive and secure, the latest entry in Sabrina Ionescu’s signature footwear lineage provides the consistent performance and dependability athletes have come to know, love and expect in a Sabrina basketball shoe — allowing them to focus on the game and perform at their peak.

The Sabrina 3 builds off the success of Sabrina’s first two signature sneakers, offering a consistent yet refined feel for hoopers everywhere in a silhouette that champions quality craftsmanship and tells a deeper story about Sabrina herself.

“I know every single basketball player who puts on the Sabrina 3 will continue to see and feel the work that we’ve put in to create the best performance shoe that we can,” says Sabrina. “This shoe represents so much of me, from the vertical Swoosh that we’ve had since the Sabrina 1 to the design touches personal to me. I hope it inspires all hoopers, especially young girls, helping them continue to break down barriers and believe in themselves.”

Inspired by textile weaving and embroidery that nod to Sabrina’s Romanian roots, her new signature silhouette is a work of art that’s as dependable and consistent as its predecessors.

Mesh pleats throughout the upper serve dual purposes: defining the standout style of the new silhouette while housing cables that span the midfoot — providing enhanced containment, strength and support.

This innovative system of containment pairs with the beloved combination of a forefoot Air Zoom unit and Cushlon 3.0 midsole familiar to fans of Sabrina’s footwear, reprising the comfortable ride and consistent court feel from her first two signature silhouettes.

The vertical, off-axis Swoosh that represents the glass ceilings Sabrina continues to shatter returns on the medial side of the sneaker, while a new traction pattern with a concentric “S” design celebrates Sabrina more than ever.

“The Sabrina 3 builds on the consistency we’ve established with Sabrina’s first two signature silhouettes while evolving the look and feel of the shoe to match her needs on the court and further reflect her personal story and style,” says Ben Nethongkome, the lead designer for Sabrina’s footwear. “The Sabrina 1 and 2 made her signature line a go-to choice for hoopers around the world, and we wanted to keep that standout performance and consistency while helping make Sabrina, and the athletes who wear her shoe, even faster, stronger and more confident in every step.”

The Sabrina 3 pairs seamlessly with Sabrina’s third signature collection of Dri-FIT apparel, which includes a unisex pant; hoodie; full-zip sweatshirt; and reversible short and top; as well as T-shirts for women, men and kids.

All of the hooper’s essentials from Sabrina’s apparel collection are built to her exact specifications, whether she’s refining her game, on the go or recharging at home — making each piece a seamless addition to every athlete’s wardrobe.

Further, every aspect of Sabrina’s signature footwear and apparel nod to Nike’s unparalleled commitment to growing the women’s game, supporting athletes from the EYBL to the WNBA, and fostering basketball culture around the world.

The Sabrina 3 also recalls Nike’s commitment to creating the future of basketball footwear, with best-in-class silhouettes along the spectrum of feel that accentuate the way athletes use their athleticism as their competitive advantage.

Nike complements these footwear innovations with colorway stories, materials and finishes that channel the creative and confident energy that the next generation of hoopers bring to the court.

By creating the best for the best, then delivering it to those who love the game the most, Nike is championing the players at the heart of basketball, powering the future of the game and fueling basketball culture — serving Sabrina and other elite hoopers alongside the next generation of athletes and fans.

The Nike Sabrina 3 and accompanying apparel collection will be available July 24 at nike.com and select retail locations.

Nike also pairs these footwear innovations with colorway stories, materials and finishes that match the bold and confident energy that the next generation of hoopers brings to the court.

This is possible only because of Nike’s commitment to listening to the voices of athletes — girls, boys, women and men, from the EYBL to the highest levels of the game — to inform the brand’s basketball footwear innovation and design.

“The Nike Basketball footwear we debuted during the SNKRS Showcase further demonstrates our unparalleled commitment to the sport, its athletes and culture,” says Jarrett Mann, Senior Director, Men’s Basketball Footwear. “We look forward to raising the bar and advancing our basketball dominance by continuing to bring forward the best innovation, storytelling and athletes in the game.”

The participants were chosen following an online part of the project that launched in February.

The photographer workshop, in collaboration with Sony, will see 11 young professionals learn from some of the world’s best athletics photographers and news agencies in Tokyo, to sharpen their visual storytelling skills covering athletics.

The TV commentator programme will involve aspiring broadcasters being mentored by seasoned commentators, gaining hands-on experience and insight into live athletics production during the championships.

This multifaceted Media Academy underlines World Athletics’ commitment to fostering high-quality global coverage of the sport by investing directly in the next generation of athletics media professionals. In total, 27 participants – 14 women and 13 men – from 19 countries across all continental areas are represented. • Archer return, Gill on a roll – talking points ahead of England-India third Test

Archer return, Gill on a roll – talking points ahead of England-India third Test

England are heading to Lord’s for the third Rothesay Test hoping to move on quickly from their heavy defeat at Edgbaston.

Here, the PA news agency looks at some of the key areas for discussion ahead of the game.

    Will Archer hit the spot?

It has been over four years since Jofra Archer last donned his England whites but his mystique has barely dimmed during that lengthy break. His memorable spell at Lord’s on debut, where he felled Australia’s Steve Smith with a blood-curdling bouncer, remains the high watermark and if can summon anything similar it will lend a whole new dimension to a home line-up that has struggled for cutting edge.

    Where there’s a Gill, there’s a way

New India captain Shubman Gill has enjoyed a barely believable scoring sequence since taking over from Rohit Sharma, banging out 585 runs in four innings so far against England. He has looked remarkably untroubled throughout and seems well placed to have a crack at Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 974 in a single series. He has never played at the home of cricket before but England know they will have to work hard or get lucky if they are to keep him off the famous honours board.

    Tough at the top

England hoped to have put any worries over their top three to bed after Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope both hit form against Zimbabwe and made strong contributions at Headingley. But the pair managed just 43 in four innings in the second Test against India, with Ben Duckett adding just 25. Now the tourists are preparing to recall star seamer Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested in Birmingham, and pair him with Akash Deep, who took a career-best 10-wicket haul. Facing the new ball is about to get even trickier for the top order.

Can the Wizard work his magic?

    • 32 wickets at 12.90
    • Best figures of six for 19
    • 340 runs at 42.50
    • Best score of 137no

Chris Woakes has not been at his best so far and, at 36, will need a decent showing here to dampen down questions over his future. He could hardly hope for a better venue to produce a response, given his remarkable record at HQ. In seven games at Lord’s he boasts 32 wickets at a world-class average of 12.90, as well as a batting average of 42.50. On his favourite ground, Woakes needs to roll back the years.

    Bashir under the microscope

England remain committed to spinner Shoaib Bashir, repeating their mantra that he is a ‘work in progress’ with a ‘high ceiling’. Eight wickets at 59.50 from 120 overs represents a modest return so far, but he has been hampered by their preference for bowling first. He has varied his speeds and developed a new ‘carrom ball’ but could do with showing his tinkering can be a force against top players. If there is turn at the back end of the game, the 21-year-old must make the most of it, for his own confidence as much as that of the selectors.

  • ‘Zero visibility’ – Isack Hadjar explains Kimi Antonelli crash as Liam Lawson rues missed opportunity for Racing Bulls at Silverstone

‘Zero visibility’ – Isack Hadjar explains Kimi Antonelli crash as Liam Lawson rues missed opportunity for Racing Bulls at Silverstone

Racing Bulls had a day to forget at the British Grand Prix, with both Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar crashing out on a day where many of their midfield rivals scored big points.

Lawson was the first to exit the race after he collided with Esteban Ocon’s Haas on the opening lap, in what the stewards deemed a racing incident. While Ocon was able to continue, the New Zealander was forced into immediate retirement.

Hadjar had avoided much of the opening lap chaos by pitting at the end of the Formation Lap for slick tyres, along with George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Ollie Bearman and Gabriel Bortoleto – a move that was soon proven to be the wrong strategy call.

When the race came back together after a Safety Car period, Hadjar found himself behind the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli but, just as the Safety Car peeled off the track and racing resumed, the rookie barreled into the back of the Mercedes, retiring immediately.

“Racing in these tough conditions means that it’s always a little bit of a gamble out there,” Hadjar explained following his collision. “At the start of the race, I was following Charles [Leclerc] and it seemed we had a good pace; we were on the same strategy, but it wasn’t the right one.

“During the laps we spent behind the Safety Car, I couldn’t see much due to the heavy rain and the tyre temperature dropped.

“After the restart, I wish I could have maybe had a bit more margin, but when I saw the red light of the back of Kimi’s car, it was already too late as there was just zero visibility. Thankfully, I’m okay.”

The incident also sent Antonelli into retirement as well, with both drivers emerging unscathed from what could have been a nasty crash.

Lawson was also fortunately uninjured from his collision, and was left rueing what he believed was a missed opportunity for the team at Silverstone.

“It is a shame, I think we would have had a very good car today and obviously in a race like this, anything can happen,” he said.

“It’s just an opportunity that we’ve now missed out on, and I wasn’t really trying to be aggressive, I had a really good start, a path sort of opened up for us and I just wanted to survive the first lap.”

Following the British Grand Prix and their double DNF, Racing Bulls have dropped from sixth to seventh in the standings, overtaken by Kick Sauber, and are now on equal points with Aston Martin, who scored with both cars.
