Get to know Zubimendi with these 12 fun facts | Feature | News

Martin Zubimendi became our second summer signing when he swapped Real Sociedad for N5, but how much do you know about our latest new face?

The Spanish international has been a pillar of consistency throughout his career for both club and country, helping Spain to glory at Euro 2024, and while his rise has been well documented, here are some facts you might not know about the 26-year-old.

    Familiar upbringings

Martin Zubimendi will be working closely Mikel Arteta in the future, but it’s their past that is also linked. Both born in San Sebastian, Basque Country, the pair also share a similar route through to professional football, having played for youth team Antiguoko. The famed youth side is stacked with notable alumni, having also developed the likes of Bournemouth manager Andrei Iraola and Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso.

    Euro 2024 impact

When Rodri was substituted at half-time in the Euro 2024 final against England, many believed the Three Lions had the upper hand going into the second half. Rodri’s replacement was Zubimendi, who turned the tide in Spain’s favour. He completed 92% of his passes, made three recoveries and won all five of his duels as La Roja scored two second-half goals to win 2-1 in Berlin.

    Milestone moments

Having made his debut in April 2019 after coming through the academy ranks after leaving Antiguoko. It would take him almost three years to bag his first goal, which came in the Europa League against RB Leipzig. Having waited so long for his first professional strike, his second came along 17 days later, netting the winner in a 1-0 victory over Alaves in La Liga.

    Three Dozen

Martin will be donning the number 36 for us in the 2025/26 season, a number that’s close to the midfielder’s heart. Martin wore the jersey in 2019 when making his debut for Real Sociedad against Getafe. He went on to play in the no.36 jersey on 52 occasions before switching to number three and then four for the remainder of his Real Sociedad career.

    Arsenal connection

Martin will have some familiar faces when he meets his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. The midfielder has played club football alongside Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard at Real Sociedad. He has also featured with David Raya for the Spanish national team, alongside Merino.

    Merino Magic

While he is familiar with several players in our squad, one player who stands out is Mikel Merino. The pair have played 169 matches together for both club and country, amassing 11,229 minutes on the pitch at the same time. The duo linked up for two goals during their time at Real Sociedad, with Mikel setting up Martin for a 94th-minute equaliser against Alaves in 2024 and doing the same against Girona in 2022.

    Olympic Dreams

Not many players get the opportunity to represent their nations at the Olympic Games but that was the case for Martin at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. He featured five times during the competition, which saw Spain lose to Gabriel Martinelli’s Brazil in the final, meaning they picked up the silver medal.

    Hometown hero

Having made his debut the season prior, Martin would go on to have a hand in helping Real Sociedad claim a first major trophy since 1987 by winning the 2019-20 Copa del Rey. Martin played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Basque rivals Athletic Club in the final, starting the match next to Merino, who won player of the match, and former Gunner Nacho Monreal.

    Spanish Link

We’ve enjoyed great success with a host of Spanish stars over the years. A total of 16 players from the country have put on our colours, with seven Spaniards making over 100 appearances for the club: Cesc Fabregas, Manuel Almunia, Jose Antonio Reyes, Santi Cazorla, Nacho Monreal, Hector Bellerin and our manager, Mikel Arteta.

    Chess champ

Outside of football, Martin has a talent for chess, a game he’s played since he was a child. At 11 years old, Martin won the Gipuzkoa chess championships in the under-12 category. On his love of chess, Martin said: “It’s a game that requires you to have everything under control. In both sports, the midfield is crucial because it defines the style of play.”

    Breaking the lines

Breaking down low blocks can make the difference between winning and losing and in order to do that, a line-breaking pass is a must. During 2024/25, only three players produced more line-breaking passes in La Liga than Martin Zubimendi. His 238 line-breakers were only beaten by a trio of Real Madrid players in Luka Modric, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni.

    Basque Joiners

While Martin is making his way from San Sebastian, he’s not the only player hailing from the Basque Country to be joining the ranks. Kepa Arrizabalaga put pen to paper to become our first signing of the summer window and also hails from the region. Kepa was born in Ondarroa, approximately 60km from Martin in San Sebastian.

  • One year later, De Minaur gets his shot at Djokovic at Wimbledon

One year later, De Minaur gets his shot at Djokovic at Wimbledon

It will be an almighty challenge, given what Djokovic has produced on the lawns so far this fortnight.

He overwhelmed fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3 6-0 6-4 on Centre Court on Saturday – his 100th match victory at Wimbledon.

The more the 38-year-old wins, the more history he creates, and there are extraordinary milestones on the line for him at SW19 this year, where he is targeting a seventh consecutive final.

A tournament victory would see him equal Roger Federer’s men’s record of eight singles titles, earn an all-time record 25th major title, and become the oldest Grand Slam singles champion in Open-era history.

Despite overlapping for many years on tour, Djokovic and De Mianur have only played three times. Djokovic leads the head-to-head 2-1, and in their only Grand Slam meeting, Djokovic dropped just five games in a Rod Laver Arena masterclass in 2023.

He is, however, wary of how this match-up could unfold on grass.

“It’s gonna be a great challenge,” Djokovic told Stan Sport.

“I think Alex is a player who has been improving so much [in the] last couple of years. He’s already now an established top-10 player, and on grass particularly I think it suits him very well.

  • Martin Zubimendi: Arsenal sign Sociedad midfielder in £60m deal

Martin Zubimendi: Arsenal sign Sociedad midfielder in £60m deal

For Arsenal, the beginning of the end of Zubimendi’s signing began in the scorching heat of Spain’s south coast as long ago as last June.

In truth, though, the journey culminating in the midfielder’s arrival at Emirates Stadium was spawned well in advance of that covert visit to Andalusia last summer.

Mikel Arteta had watched Zubimendi extensively. He was taken by his ability to execute the full passing repertoire with precision and timing.

A controller of matches, Zubimendi became an obsession for the Arsenal head coach.

With that in mind, a delegation from the Emirates, including then sporting director Edu and his number two Jason Ayto, flew to Marbella for a meeting with counterparts from Real Sociedad.

To greet them in Spain was Roberto Alabe, the La Liga club’s then sporting director, and president Jokin Aperribay.

For Edu and Ayto, the primary aim of their deployment was to strike a deal for Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, who was an immediate target for Arsenal.

    But then arrived the curveball.

Arsenal’s recruitment heads explained that, while they wanted to sign Merino before the 2024-25 season, they also had designs on midfield partner Zubimendi.

But here was the catch – they wanted to sign Zubimendi in the summer of 2025. Their finances last summer would not allow them to do both.

There was the added complication of Liverpool’s interest in the 26-year-old.

Recently appointed Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes had entered into negotiations with Sociedad over a move Zubimendi to the point where the Anfield club believed they were close to tying up the deal.

However, sources have since indicated that, while the midfielder was attracted by a move to Merseyside last summer, he was apprehensive that the decision was too rushed, particularly in the middle of a European Championship summer.

Zubimendi: “I set my sights on Arsenal” | Interview | News

After completing his move, our new midfielder Martin Zubimendi revealed he cannot wait to get down to business in our red and white.

The Euro 2024 winner joins from Real Sociedad where he spent 15 years, coming through their famed academy to become a leading light in the middle of the park.

While leaving his hometown of San Sebastian wasn’t an easy decision, Martin was left in no doubt that his future was set for north London.

“Once I made the decision to leave, I set my sights on Arsenal because I think their style of play is a good fit for me,” our new midfielder said in his first interview.

“It’s a young, highly motivated and ambitious team. They have shown their potential recently, and I believe the best is yet to come. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. Andrea [Berta] and Mikel [Arteta] took excellent care of me, leaving me with no doubts whatsoever.

“This is a huge moment in my career. It’s the move I was looking for; one I wanted to make. Of course, it’s a big change, but I’m ready to get started.”

Zubimendi’s path to success follows similarities to Arteta. The pair turned out for the same youth team, Antiguoko, before both representing Real Sociedad.

He said: “We have a lot in common. We come from the same city and played for the same teams. We’ll have something to talk about off the pitch, I’m happy about that.”

When Martin heads to the Sobha Realty Training Centre, he will be greeted by a few familiar faces. One of whom is Martin Odegaard, and while they only played together for three months, our captain made a lasting impression on our new number 36.

He said: “Apart from how hard Martin works on the pitch, I was surprised by how much he works off the pitch at the gym.

“He is 100% focused on his fitness. As for Real, it’s difficult when you’re on loan, but Martin experienced all that.”

Zubimendi also featured alongside Mikel Merino during his time at the Reale Arena, making 169 appearances together. As well as also knowing David Raya from the Spanish national team, Martin hopes this will help him hit the ground running in N5.

“I’m happy to be here with them. I’ve played many games alongside Merino over the years.

“It’s important because it will make the transition much easier for me, and I’m sure they’ll be a great help.”

Martin Zubimendi signs for Arsenal | News

We’re delighted to announce that Spain international Martin Zubimendi has joined us on a long-term contract.

The 26-year-old arrives from Real Sociedad, for whom he made 236 appearances in all competitions at first-team level after graduating from the club’s academy. In April 2021, Martin helped Sociedad win the delayed 2019/20 Copa del Rey against intercity rivals Athletic Club, alongside current Gunner Mikel Merino.

He was then ever-present in 2022/23 as Real Sociedad secured their highest league finish in recent history, ending the season in fourth place to secure Champions League football for only the third time, and the first in 10 years.

A Spnaish international, Martin started all five games in the 2020 Olympic Games as they claimed silver in Tokyo and has gone on to make 19 senior appearances for La Roja, winning the 2023 UEFA Nations League as well as helping his country defeat England 2-1 to win Euro 2024, coming on as a half-time substitute.

Martin said: “This is a huge moment in my career. It’s the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are.

“I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.”

Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, added: “We are so happy to bring Martin to Arsenal and have a lot of pride in finalising this transfer. Martin was a key target for us and we all know that he is a perfect fit for our squad with the high quality he has.

“We welcome Martin and his family to the club. We look forward to him settling in with his teammates and are very excited to see him playing in an Arsenal shirt.”

Mikel Arteta added: “Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team. He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.

“The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club.”

Martin will wear the number 36 shirt and will join up with his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre when the team report for pre-season.

Everyone at Arsenal welcomes Martin to the club.

The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.

  • Ian Rush Pays Emotional Tribute to Jota Amid Heartbreaking Double Loss

Ian Rush Pays Emotional Tribute to Jota Amid Heartbreaking Double Loss

Club Legend Ian Rush Reflects on Tragedy

Liverpool icon Ian Rush has expressed his deep sorrow following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva. The pair were killed in a car accident in the early hours of Thursday morning, leaving the football world in mourning. Rush, Liverpool’s all-time leading goalscorer, spoke emotionally about the loss, comparing the grief to past tragedies that have tested the unity of the club.

Despite being invited to Jota’s funeral in Gondomar, Portugal, Rush was unable to attend due to the passing of his own brother, Gerald. He admitted that juggling his own family loss while processing the death of Jota had been overwhelming. “It hasn’t really hit home yet,” he said. “Diogo was a great player—probably the best finisher at the club—and more importantly, a wonderful person.”

    Mourning a Team-Mate and Friend

The Liverpool squad flew to Portugal to pay their respects in person, with players and staff attending Jota’s funeral. The sight of so many current and former Reds gathered in Gondomar captured the strength of Liverpool’s sense of family—an ethos long spoken about by players past and present.

Rush, reflecting on the emotional toll, added: “At Liverpool, we’ve always seen ourselves as one big family. When one of us goes, we rally around. That’s what we’ve always done, and that’s what we’ll do now.”

He drew parallels with the unity shown in the aftermath of Hillsborough—an enduring moment in the club’s history—and highlighted how the Liverpool community instinctively comes together in the face of grief. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re a player or a supporter—we all stick together,” he said.

    Jota’s Legacy Beyond the Pitch

Jota’s impact at Liverpool was clear, not just in his goals and performances but in the way he carried himself. Rush was unequivocal in his praise: “He always gave 100 percent. He could change a game whether he started or came off the bench. He never craved headlines, and that was just as true off the pitch.”

Described as a “real gent” by those who knew him, Jota was someone who earned respect quietly. His work ethic, humility, and professionalism left a mark on the dressing room, making his death all the more difficult for those preparing to return for pre-season.

“It’s hard to just get back to training and act like everything is normal,” Rush said. “Footballers are human too. For some, it’ll take time for the full weight of this tragedy to be felt.”

Pain Shared Across the Liverpool Family

As the days go on, the Liverpool squad—alongside staff, fans, and club legends—will try to process the loss of a team-mate, a brother, and a friend. Rush believes that while grief often comes in waves, the bond between those in the Liverpool family will be the difference in helping people heal.

“You try to move on, but it’s not easy,” he concluded. “Diogo will never be forgotten. He truly embodied everything Liverpool stands for.”

This tragedy has shaken Liverpool to its core, but in the spirit of solidarity that defines the club, the memory of Diogo Jota will continue to inspire those who wear the shirt he once wore with pride.

    Looks proper wet, doesn’t it?

It’s only stage two but I fear the fever dream I had shall not come to pass: Visma using Vingegaard as a stalking horse against Pogacar as Yates sits quietly a minute or so behind in the GC ranking before getting a stomp on up the mountains to win it all. After his thrilling heroics in Italy, he deserves a second grand tour win.

However, this year looks set to be an absolute corker, with Visma redefining super domestique riders to topple Pogacar’s crown.

  • Boya takes Silverstone win after rain and Red Flag

Boya takes Silverstone win after rain and Red Flag

Mari Boya earned his first Feature Race victory in FIA Formula 3, keeping control of things at the front through a torrential downpour that resulted in the race being shortened by a Red Flag.

The Campos Racing driver finished ahead of Théophile Nael, who wound up second for Van Amersfoort Racing and Noel Léon for PREMA Racing in third.

    AS IT HAPPENED

Pre-race rain split strategies on the grid with some taking Wet Pirelli tyres and others fitted with Hard slick tyres and as the formation lap started, the rain intensified.

Those on the wets got the best start but Nikola Tsolov, Ugo Ugochukwu and Rafael Câmara each tumbled down the order with the track too wet for their slick tyres.

It left Boya to take the lead ahead of Nael and Léon in the top three, with Sprint winner Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak and Laurens van Hoepen following in fourth and fifth.

Despite a spin on the opening lap, Alessandro Giusti proved how much of an advantage those on Wets had, as he moved back up to P16 with a pass on Ugochukwu and Tsolov on Lap 2.

Laptimes were 10 seconds slower for those on Hards versus those on the Wets.

Van Hoepen moved up to fourth with a dive to the inside at Vale, while Boya began to stretch his advantage to beyond two seconds by the start of Lap 5.

Christian Ho and James Wharton moved themselves up to seventh with moves on Inthraphuvasak, dropping the Campos driver down to eighth.

Boya surged into the lead on the Wet tyres while those on Hards fell back down the order

Charlie Wurz was the first of those to have started on dries to bail on their Hard tyres, and he pitted on Lap 7 to fit the Wets. Martinius Stenshorne followed suit a lap later, as the laptime deficit between Wets and Hards remained at seven-seconds per lap.

Tsolov and Câmara remained on track and with a dive to the inside entering Vale, the Championship leader passed the Campos driver for P17 on Lap 9.

Câmara, Tsolov and Ugochukwu were into the pitlane on Lap 10 to finally fit the Wet tyres with the rain intensifying.

Louis Sharp spun off the road at the final corner despite running on Wets, and the Rodin Motorsport driver’s stoppage brought out the Safety Car on Lap 11 as rain continued to hit harder.

While the Safety Car remained on the track, van Hoepen was handed a five-second time penalty for a false start. The Dutch driver was running in fifth.

With the rain remaining heavy, the Red Flag was out on Lap 14, and the race was not resumed.

It meant Boya was a Feature Race winner for the first time ahead of Nael and Léon, with Roman Bilinski finished fourth for Rodin. Van Hoepen was P5 on the road but once his penalty was applied, he dropped down to P7.

This promoted Ho up to P5 and Wharton to sixth, with Santiago Ramos, Bruno del Pino and Inthraphuvasak completing the top 10.

KEY QUOTE – Mari Boya, Campos Racing

Also really proud to join the Aston Martin family. All the races with them have been really good, so I’m really excited to keep working. It’s still really open in the Championship, so let’s go for everything and gracias to Campos Racing!”

    THE CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS

‘I feel privileged to be here and witness that innings’: Varun Aaron hails Shubman Gills historic century in Edgbaston test

New Delhi [India], July 6 (ANI): Former Indian cricketer Varun Aaron praised Indian test skipper Shubman Gill’s historic century in the second innings of the 2nd test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

At a venue where India is yet to register its maiden Test win, Gill led from the front following his memorable 269(387) in the first innings and then topped it up with a flamboyant 161(162) in his second turn to rescript the history books on the fourth day.

Speaking on ‘Match Centre Live’, JioHotstar expert Varun Aaron said, “I honestly feel privileged to be here and witness that innings. I can’t recall him giving the English bowlers even a single chance. The way he shifted gears — hitting sixes at will — without slogging, just pure cricket shots, was something special. Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. It reminded me of the previous Indian number four — almost a carbon copy of that genius. I don’t think he could’ve dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Sure, he’d have liked to win at Headingley, but now he’s hopefully set up a fantastic victory here tomorrow.”

With a whopping 430 runs across both innings, Gill has the second-highest aggregate of runs in a single Test, behind England’s Graham Gooch, who had an output of 456 runs after scoring 333 and 123 against India at Lord’s back in 1990.

Gill became the second batter to register 150-plus scores in both innings of a Test after Allan Border (150* & 153) against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980. Gill’s outing is also the first instance of a 250-plus and 150-plus score in a Test by a batter.

The 25-year-old is only the second Indian, after Gavaskar, to hit a double century and a century in the same Test. He has outdone ex-skipper and legendary batter Virat (243 and 50) to have the highest aggregate by an Indian captain in a Test match.

Gill is the second Asian batter with 350-plus aggregate in a Test outside the subcontinent after Pakistan’s Hanif Mohammad (354: 17 and 337) at Bridgetown in 1958. (ANI)
