Arab nations call for peace, renewal of Arab Peace Initiative on final day of UN 2-state solution conference

DUBAI/LONDON: Arab nations issued a unified call to end the violence in Gaza and the West Bank on Wednesday, reiterating their strongest endorsement yet of the Arab Peace Initiative as the only viable framework for regional peace and stability.

“What we’re seeing today in Gaza, the withdrawal of stability and security in the region, is indeed the outcome of the ongoing occupation,” said a representative of the Arab League, delivering a statement on behalf of the organization’s secretary-general, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

“This is the price being paid by Palestinians, a price paid in blood.”

He described the toll as “an extremely high price that we are all paying for the system of apartheid and occupation to remain on this land,” adding that the League remains committed to the Arab Peace Initiative, which was initially adopted in Beirut, 23 years ago.

“This vision hasn’t, however, been reciprocated. Rather, it has been countered by arrogance and nationalism based on religious sectarian views that will lead the region to an unknown future,” he said.

The comments came at the conclusion of the “High-Level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution” at the UN headquarters in New York.

Oman echoed the sentiment, with its representative reaffirming that “comprehensive and lasting peace” must be grounded in the framework of international law, as outlined in the Arab Peace Initiative.

In a position similar to that adopted by other nations during the conference, the Omani representative accused Israel of unilaterally “eroding” the prospects for peace, in what he described as “defiance of the provisions of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.”

He continued: “The nature of the current Israeli government’s policies, as the most extreme in decades, further complicates the landscape and directly hampers all effort to relaunch the peace process.”

The Gulf Cooperation Council reiterated its position of support for a two-state solution to the decades-long conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, condemned the continuing Israeli aggression against Gaza, and demanded that it end.

The council’s representative said it also rejected Israeli settlement policies as a blatant violation, and called for full humanitarian access in Gaza and reconstruction of the territory to begin.

“True greatness is not based on power but on the ability to use power to serve justice,” he added. “It is time to turn this principle into (a) clear international position that recognizes (a) fully independent Palestinian state.”

The representative for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation joined the others in advocating for a two-state solution, and stressed the need for Israeli authorities to act in accordance with UN resolutions.

Israel is guilty of “systemic crimes including aggression, genocide, destruction, displacement, starvation and blockade on the Gaza Strip,” he added, in addition to “illegal policies of settlement expansion, annexation and ethnic cleansing.”

Moreover, Israel’s intention “to impose its so-called sovereignty over the West Bank, including the occupied city of Jerusalem … constitutes flagrant violations of international law and the relevant UN resolutions,” the representative said as he called for an end to all such actions.

The calls came as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the conflict in Gaza has reached “breaking point.” International pressure for a ceasefire agreement continues to mount but Israel has resisted calls to halt its military operations, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly moving ahead with plans to annex parts of Gaza if Hamas rejects a truce.

On Wednesday, sources said Israel had turned down the latest ceasefire proposal, citing its refusal to withdraw forces from key areas of the territory.

Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, described this week’s UN conference as “a political circus” against Israel.

“We’re seeing a detachment from reality, the spread of lies, and support for terrorism,” he wrote in a message posted on social media platform X.

The US special envoy to the Middle East, Steven Witkoff, was expected to arrive in Tel Aviv on Thursday for talks with Israeli officials. His visit comes as the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification warns that the “worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out” in Gaza.

Iran’s representative at the UN also spoke on the final day of the conference, condemning a “policy of appeasement” from the international community toward Israel, and calling for concrete action.

“In light of its continued defiance of the UN Charter, the Israeli regime must face targeted sanctions and suspension of its UN membership to protect the integrity and credibility of the organization,” the he said.

He further urged member states to press the Security Council to admit Palestine as a full member of the UN and insisted that “this process must not be obstructed by the United States.” Palestine currently has observer status at the UN.

A follow-up summit to this week’s conference is planned to take place during the UN General Assembly in September.

We’re reviewing images out of western Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, following reports of overnight drone and missile strikes killing six people and injuring dozens.

President Volodymyr Zelensky and Kyiv mayor Vitality Klitschko are among those sharing images from the scene.

We’re confident the material posted by Zelensky is from this morning. The images haven’t appeared publicly before and the weather matches. We’ve also geolocated the partially collapsed building seen in the video.

This image was posted on Telegram this morning by President Zelensky, and geolocated to a block in western Kyiv

We’re now turning our attention to a video posted by Klitschko – as well as images reportedly from Bucha on the Kyiv outskirts.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine has been taken by Russian forces. The town has been the focus of intense Russian attacks since February.

At least two open source-focused websites have reported Russian flags being flown there. The city is located on route to a larger industrial area of the Donbas and is seen as strategically important. We saw many images from there as a staging post for the Ukrainian army in their defence of nearby Bakhmut in 2023.

However, the presence of flags alone do not mean control has been taken.

We’ll continue to review images from Chasiv Yar and elsewhere in Ukraine.

Trump steps up Canada trade war after Carney’s Palestine pledge – US politics live | US news

Trump escalates trade war with Canada following Palestine stance

Good morning and welcome to our rolling coverage of US politics as Donald Trump intensified his trade war with Canada a day ahead of his 1 August deadline for a tariff agreement.

The president posted on his Truth Social platform:

Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!

Trump is set to impose a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods not covered by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement if the two countries do not reach an agreement by the deadline.

Canadian prime minister Mark Carney previously said tariff negotiations with Washington had been constructive, but the talks may not conclude by the deadline. Canada is the second-largest US trading partner after Mexico, and the largest buyer of US exports.

Carney followed France and Britain as he said on Wednesday that his country was planning to recognize Palestine at a meeting of the United Nations in September.

The Trump administration is pushing an initiative for millions of Americans to upload personal health data and medical records on new apps and systems run by private tech companies, promising easier to access health records and wellness monitoring.

Donald Trump is expected to deliver remarks on the initiative on Wednesday afternoon in the East Room. The event is expected to involve leaders from more than 60 companies, including major tech companies such as Google and Amazon, as well as prominent hospital systems like the Cleveland clinic.

The new system will focus on diabetes and weight management, conversational artificial intelligence that helps patients, and digital tools such as QR codes and apps that register patients for check-ins or track medications.

The initiative, spearheaded by an administration that has already freely shared highly personal data about Americans in ways that have tested legal bounds, could put patients’ desires for more convenience at their doctor’s office on a collision course with their expectations that their medical information be kept private.

“There are enormous ethical and legal concerns,” said Lawrence Gostin, a Georgetown University law professor who specializes in public health. “Patients across America should be very worried that their medical records are going to be used in ways that harm them and their families.”

  • Cambodia asks Thailand to release detained soldiers as truce holds

Cambodia asks Thailand to release detained soldiers as truce holds

(Reuters) – Cambodia accused Thailand on Thursday of detaining 20 of its soldiers and killing another in post-ceasefire incidents, as a fragile peace held for a third day along their disputed border.

Five days of intense clashes between the Southeast Asian neighbours that began last week killed at least 43 people, many of them civilians, and displaced more than 300,000, until a truce brokered in Malaysia on Monday halted the fighting.

Thailand has since accused Cambodian troops of violating the ceasefire multiple times, a charge denied by authorities in Phnom Penh, who instead allege that the Thai military has wrongfully detained a number of its soldiers.

“We appeal to the Thai side to promptly return all 20 of our forces, including other forces if any are under Thai control,” Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Thursday.

In a statement, senior Cambodian defence official Lieutenant General Rath Dararoth said one Cambodian soldier had died in Thai custody since the ceasefire and his body had been returned. He did not provide further details.

Thailand currently has custody of 20 Cambodian soldiers who had surrendered, including two who are under medical treatment, Thai Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri told reporters.

“We are investigating them to verify the facts. After this is finished, they will be released,” Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said, stressing the Thai military had not violated the ceasefire agreement.

As per talks between military commanders held after Monday’s truce announcement, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to facilitate the return of wounded soldiers and bodies of those deceased, besides refraining from reinforcing troops along the border.

Cambodia took military attaches and diplomats to a border checkpoint on Wednesday to verify the ceasefire as both sides exchanged accusations of violating the truce.

For decades, Thailand and Cambodia have wrangled over undemarcated points along their 817-km (508-mile) land border, with ownership of the ancient Hindu temples Ta Moan Thom and the 11th century Preah Vihear central to the disputes.

The recent truce followed a push by Malaysia and calls by U.S. President Donald Trump’s to leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, warning them that trade deals would not be concluded if the fighting continued.

Both countries face a tariff of 36% on goods sent to the U.S., their biggest export market.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, said early on Thursday that trade deals had been made with both countries ahead of the August 1 tariff deadline.
